Wow! The creen comes alive with sexual tension.
Not since Tracey and Hepburn, Bogie and Bacall,
Grant and Hepburn (the other one :) )…

Actually, my wife and I really liked that movie too. Good soundtrack. Still- I have to admit that it’s easy to make fun of.

I always thought that if I ever were to do a semi-serious riffing project with friends, this would be the movie I’d start with. It definitely deserves a full treatment.

Although Nintendo itself hated the film, the creator of Super Mario brothers (can’t think of his name), thought the movie was okay.

I’ve been waiting years for this movie to get the riffing treatment. This movie and the 1999 Godzilla film with Broderick. These movies were not kind to the fans.

What was on the soundtrack to Super Mario Bros? I used to love the cheesy tv show. “Swing your arms from side to side…”

I’ll admit, I’m also one of those few who actually really enjoyed this movie, cheesy and confused though it is. I honestly thought the direction they took with the setting, backstory, and characters was actually pretty interesting, all things considered, and I actually didn’t care that they strayed so much from the source material. Nevertheless, the riffing here was great, and I actually would like to see a full riffing of the movie in the future.

I avoided this movie when it came out, despite the cast, because I thought it was a really dumb idea. I am vindicated. Ouch. Clue really was an amazing anomaly, wasn’t it?

Not just the awful Super Mario Bros. Movie, the SUPER awful Super Mario Bros. Movie.
I wish they riffed Street Fighter The Movie, they could come up with sweet references to Future War and Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

God, this reminds me how dissapointing the movie was for me. I, five years old boy, spent the entire night asking “what the has this to do with Mario?” Ah, awful, awful memories…

If only this would get the full riff treatment.

I’m so glad I didn’t see this when it first came out. I rented this a few years ago and thought it was okay, with the expectation that it had little resemblance to the game series. This deserves the riffing. Maybe you had to ingest a real “shroom” to thoroughly enjoy this movie.

From what I understand, the director wanted the movie to be a dark, sci-fi experiment but the producers wanted a cartoonish children’s film. I went through more re-writes than anyone could keep track of and all major actors hated the experience. You ended up with an incoherent mess where the names of the characters and enemies from the game were almost randomly placed on the various people and things in the movie(that dominatrix lady was named “Big Birtha” after a big red fish that spits smaller fish at you).

It’s clear that the Rifftrax team remembers their days playing Nintendo during their breaks from brainstorming riffs in the writing room. They made a lot of great little references to the Super Mario series: “Get used to it Princess. We’ll be doing this a lot over the years.”, “He makes Wart look like a cool villain.”, and “Toad: The Super Mario Bros. 2 character your sister played as because she felt sorry for him.”.

I wonder if they chose not to do the whole thing because they figured it would be hard to find in a video rental store(if you can find a video rental store that’s still in business these days).

Oh, and John Johnson (son of John) from the 2010 Comicon panel (as seen on Rifftrax’s Maniac dvd) must be happy, finally.

    Poor, poor Dennis Hopper. RIP
I have never said “What the Hell?!” more for any movie than this one. I thought Hoskins and Leguizamo were good choices for Mario and Luigi and Hopper is always great, but… What the HELL? Why do the goombas have TINY heads? Mario is a last name? Why jump boots? “Hilarious and Exciting cross between Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, and Star Wars”? What the HELL?!?!

If you really want to know everything about this movie, there’s one place to go: smbmovie.com

They have interviews and articles that are fascinating. A fantastic site devoted to a wretched move.

  22. This was the first movie I was allowed to see without a grown-up at the theater up the street from my house (I was 8) so it has a special place in my heart. Soundtrack is great. A good riffing would only enhance my cheesy affection for it.
