Spacesuits in Movies

Diane Tedeschi at Air & Space magazine has an article about spacesuits in movies, that includes several references to MSTed movies.

Thanks to Bob for the heads up.

  1. Spacesuits are just naturally hilarious.

But oddly enough, NO reference to MST3K itself which has kept all these films in the public eye. With “local stations” now a thing of the past, and SYFY equally as irrelevant, MST3K is the only place to see Moon Zero Two, 12 to the Moon and First Spaceship on Venus. All “spacesuit films” of one note or another.

I just appreciate any reference to Moon Zero Two, one of my favorite MST films, with respectable science and effects for a scifi movie. Plus, if we fight, we fight MY way…

Well, actually, there kinda was. It was more of an indirect reference:

I derive no pleasure from watching such films merely to laugh at the subpar acting, inane stories, risible dialogue, and atrocious special effects; in one article, I likened this to laughing at handicapped people.

So, you should not laugh at people who do things poorly; you should just call them “handicapped.”

At the Kennedy Space center there is a display of prototype spacesuits designed over the years. Some of them clearly inspired many a movie suit. There was even one that I thought was a costume from Armageddon!

That article repeats the old tale about Kubrick having everything from 2001 destroyed. One of the spacesuits in fact is still in existence, and had been seen in the Kubrick exhibit touring Europe. (Finally coming to the U.S. this year!) Dave Bowman’s helmet and bits of the other suits are in the hands of private collectors.

Call me crazy, but I think there would be no Star Wars without Moon Zero Two. Moon Zero Two has the space bar and Han Solo type character a few years before Star Wars.
