Old School “Manos” Game Coming

This has been on Tumblr for a couple of weeks now. Matt Silverman of Mashable.com has the story.

Oh and while we’re on the subject of miscellany, yes, we know that a visual on “The Daily Show” last week used the phrase “Mystery Finance Theater 2012.” But it was such a glancing reference (Jon Stewart didn’t even say it) they we didn’t think it worthy of its own item. It’s kind of like how, about 10-15 times a year, some movie critic will invoke the show, as in: “This movie is so bad it would be worthy of Mystery Science Theater 3000.” It’s become such a lazy cliche there’s really no point in mentioning it every time somebody does it.

That’s awesome! I’d like to play that Manos game. Mike sure is a lot more useful in the game than he was in the movie.

Too bad the airplane battle and the Robot Monster cameo ended up on the editing room floor of the original Manos movie.

Hey wait a minute, The Giant Claw was never a MST3k experiment!

It should be. Hint hint, CT or Rifftrax.

    Huh?

But this is the good thing. Furthers the legacy of the brand name, possibly turning people on to something they’ve never heard of.

I wish film critics would reference the show more often. Doesn’t reek of laziness to me.

Oh Sampo, don’t be grumpy. Not everyone understands the point of the show enough to cherish it in the same way. Any time someone mentions MST3k it’s a good thing. Obviously it’s never going to be on the air again, but people who search it out will find Riff Trax and CT and maybe find new nostalgia in those as well.

    Keep riffing ALIVE!!!

Cool to see the Giant Claw and Ro-Man. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tor Johnson somewhere.

I’m always looking for enjoyably bad movies and “I can’t believe MST3K didn’t do this one” comes up so often that it does become kind of meaningless. This is mostly Internet reviewers, not proper critics. Another one that needs to be retired: “If I could give this zero stars I would”.

This is going to be an iPhone/iPad game? I hope they give it an option to play with a bluetooth gamepad. Old school 2D action/platform games are impossible to play on touchscreen devices otherwise. Well, at least extremely user unfriendly.

What are the references other then Manos people can identify in that YouTube clip? I see The Giant Claw, Hobgoblins, Robot Monster and maybe screaming skulls and crawling hands.

I hope the game doesn’t go for a “good” Torgo storyline with all the additions introduced. In the film Torgo was just as bad as his boss. He just lacked people skills.

On what day did they do the “Mystery Finance Theater 3000” joke? Will it re-air?

There was a two page article in EW a few weeks ago about movie riffing and how it was a “trend” now. Joel was interviewed, MST3K and CT were mentioned, as well as a bunch of comedians, but strangely, no mention of RT.

@13 They only repeat new episodes a few times the day after they premiere. They were putting full episodes of Daily, Colbert, South Park etc up on their website, but Viacom’s pulled them in an attempt to stop piracy – on the 7/16 show Stewart joked how pointless this is by saying he woke up to find his kid watching Dark Knight Rises.

On a side note, I wonder if Doug Herzog chewed them out for even vaguely referencing the show, given the rumors he as MTV Networks head has forbidden Colbert from having any of the Brains on his show. Sad, really.

CDM-seriously? That would make the Comedy Central Anniversary Retrospective(or whatever the hell they called it) that aired years back make more sense, but not any more right(as in there was NO reference to the show that used to fill 2 fricken hours of their air at a time). What the hell happened?

@ #4 Cameron Gouda: All Sampo was saying is that they can’t make a news listing on this site every time someone merely mentions MST3K in passing. It’s impractical.

Technically the reference was “Mystery Finance Theater 2012” (in reference to Mitt Romney), but who’s counting.

One of those articles hinted at bonus/secret levels and alternate endings. If so, please, please, PLEASE let the “best” ending involve Mike/Hal trying to sneak out of the theater at the “MANOS” premiere, only to be confronted at the exit by J&TB…

CROW: “Sorry pal, but since WE had to sit through the whole thing…”

TOM: “Some of us more than once…”

Yeah, I know the background Tom Servo is likely the only direct reference we’ll see, but we can always believe that there’s that one awesome ending in there somewhere in which Sophie lives, even if we have no clue how to access it.

  22. My favorite part is that it’s an old-school, 8-bit platformer pastiche- and the hero is a normal-looking guy with a gun. No jumping on enemies, no baseball bats or kung fu kicks, no spaceman blasters. Straight up gunplay.

Also, the fireplace boss looks like pure genius.

What’s remarkable about the joke from The Daily Show is:

    1) It’s on the network which carried MST3K in it’s heyday and the show literally helped build the network. Great to see it mentioned in it’s first network home again.
    2) The Daily Show is a well respected, intelligently written show with a fairly massive following, so a mention there is a lot more prominent than some barely know blog or online magazine article seen by a much smaller audience. I know people in other countries who watch The Daily Show.
    3) Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl thought it was worth sharing it on Facebook.

To anyone curious, this is what the Daily Show’s MST3k reference looked like: http://i.imgur.com/crTD8.jpg

iPhone game, eh? Wonder if they’ll reference this scene:

Michael: Hey, Torgo, where’s the phone? Yes, Alexander Graham Bell, you know, telephone?
Torgo: There is none, sir. The Master doesn’t approve of such devices.
Margaret: Then… then where is the nearest phone?
Torgo: The nearest phone is at the crossroads. That’s ten miles.
Margaret: Ten miles? Might as well be ten THOUSAND miles!

    Howdy,

I just saw a mention and game footage of the Manos video game (and MST3K) on video game podcast http://www.youtube.com/dtoid. 7-23-12 episode. Game footage starts at 4:23 in. (NSFW- some bad language.)

    Who would have thunk it???

I like how they incorporated other old B-movie monsters into the Manos video game, including the Giant Claw and Robot Monster.

When you beat this game do you become the mASter? And when you loose do they put your player on the altar and slap and group you to death with the chicks from the Torgo toga party, then cut off you hand and burn it?
