The show itself was great. The sound quality was problematic on occasion making jokes hard to hear, but the movie itself is so riffable and the CT crew did a great job with it.

Meeting the performers after the show was a dream come true. Joel is every bit as nice and affable as I hoped.

The intro on the other hand, was awful. Elvis, Frank and the warm-up guy did a bit that combined Sweet home Alabama with “you might be a redneck” jokes. These were offensive, kind of childish, and not very funny cracks about Southerners. As this is a Michigan crowd it really didn’t feel like this was well tailored to the audience at all, and it seemed like just a chance for Frank to go off politically or for them to practice up on a bit that they intend to use closer to the south. Michigan is far enough from the south that we don’t have any hate or really any feelings towards Southerners, and as a consequence it really didn’t play well with the audience. I don’t think I heard a single laugh through the entire thing. I think Frank’s political stuff generally falls flat and is actually both a hindrance to the show and to his career prospects. It’s ok to be outrageous if you make it funny, he simply isn’t making it funny. To prevent the awkward pall that fell over the show, I’d recommend they cut this bit in the future.

Sadly, I was not able to make it over to Ann Arbor to see either show, as much as I would have liked to. I wish they would come to an area that didn’t require three hours of driving to get to. Especially considering I’m near one of the largest metro areas in the state, after that giant mass that is the Detroit metro area.

While I enjoyed Rattlers, the Doll Squad was much better. To open for the Doll Squad, Gruber riffed Henrik Ibsen’s the Dollhouse as performed by Mary Jo and Trace. It was very funny. Josh performed the MST3K theme (Season One Version) in the style of Elvis Costello and Frank performed a short piece where he corresponded with his younger self.

As to the film itself, it was very funny. Compared to Rattlers it was much faster paced with more stuff happening that led to many hilarious jokes. This was also their 100th performance.

During the autograph signing after the show, I had Joel sign my VHS copy of Pod People. He said he hadn’t seen it in a while and said he needed to watch it soon. He then recommended High School Big Shot. All 5 were extremely nice and friendly.

All in all a great experience which I would gladly go to again.

Both shows were great. I’ve seen Rattlers a couple times live and they have definitely honed the jokes into a masterpiece. One of the best they do. The Doll Squad was great too. The sound issues were all with the film itself. They even made a few jokes about it, like “too bad the sound guy is afraid of women” during a shot when you literally could not hear anything the characters were saying. Also, the foley guy picked the oddest times to impose his presence, like micing the typewriters and the crackling of fireplaces.

I thought the warmups were great. Gruber expanded on his lip synching to some songs by making it an audience particpation bit. Good stuff. I didn’t have a problem with the you might be a redneck bit, although it did seem very much like a work in progress.

Once again Ann Arbor came out in force. I was talking to someone in the box office before the show who wasn’t sure if the theater would fill up, but by showtime of each movie the place looked pretty packed to me.

Great stuff once again CTers. Can’t wait to see you again.

Has anyone seen that Joel is going to be featured on Jerry Seinfeld’s new web series “Comics in Cars Getting Coffee”? Here’s a preview with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance……..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Pe7J-8qIPY&feature=player_embedded

This was my first CT live show. And, just to start this comment off with some straight-up old-fashioned flamebait material, though I liked the Rifftrax live shows I’ve seen, the Titans really know how to pull off a live act. There, I’ve said it, and I’d say it again if I had to.

I was at the Doll Squad show. Though Angel’s Revenge, which I consider to be somewhat in a similar vein, isn’t quite one of my favorite MST3K episodes, The Doll Squad was just firing on all cylinders. A goofy, entirely ridiculous movie with laughable special effect (singular; I swear that was the same explosion they overlaid on the screen every time), an evil plan so ill-conceived that I was having flashbacks to The Wild World of Batwoman after I thought about it, and an amusing lack of emotion and acting talent all around. There were enough parts where the audience was simply cracking up over the movie itself (re: the aforementioned explosions) that you could tell early on this was going to be a classic.

And I simply want to believe Mary Jo legitimately screwed up the joke on the name of the production company. Given the first part of the joke (about the name being so hard to say), her completely flubbing the next line by accident is just too appropriate and exquisite to not be real.

Makes me want to hit up more CT shows. Shame they don’t tour anywhere really near central Kentucky. Lucky for me I was back up in Michigan visiting family for the holiday…

  8. I have been surfing online more than 3 hours today, yet I by no means discovered any interesting article like yours. It’s beautiful value sufficient for me. In my opinion, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you probably did, the net might be much more useful than ever before.
