EW Piece on Movie HecklingEntertainment Weekly, apparently picking up on the New York Times piece earlier this month, had a piece about movie heckling in last week’s issue. A condensed version has now reached the web.

No mention of Rifftrax at all, even with the big Manos show coming up next month? To use internet terminology: EPIC FAIL, EW!!!

Another monumental piece of investigative journalism from Entertainment Weekly. They’d better start working on their Pulitzer acceptance speech.

Finally getting around to reporting on late 80’s television…..weak.

@Zee: Yeah, I was wondering why the hell there was no mention of RiffTrax in the article. The editors at EW must really love the Joel years. But then again, this is Entertainment Weekly, where BATTLESHIP gets a B+ and O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? gets an F. It’s a crazy, kooked-up place where anything can happen!
But yeah, it’s an honor to get name dropped on the official fan site of my favorite show. Thanks again, Sampo!

I had a subscription to EW back in the 90s. I wrote them a letter correcting one of their articles and they printed my letter, but it was edited & full of errors.

This isn’t the first article about movie riffing or MST3K to completely ignore Rifftrax. That seems to be the rule, rather than the exception. Very annoying.

Incredible, the lack of Rifftrax is disturbing. Even more disturbing, the comments are even more moronic than the article!
Look at this guy, just look at him:
“KREMZEEK! |
people need to shut the f _ _ k up during movies. they’re never funny and nobody paid to hear their stupid s _ _ t. whenever some idiot tries to impress his moron friends or his girl by doing that crap, i always tell them to STFU and dare them to do something about it if they don’t like it and ,cowards that they are ,they never do. people’s yacking doesn’t enhance the moviegoing experience and anyone who thinks it does is the a _ _ hole who does it. if you want to talk a bunch of bull_ _ _ t,stay your _ ss home and let the rest of us enjoy the movies we came to se.”
The stupid is so strong that it burns!

Someone there should have more of a clue, EW had a story about Manos in the June 10th, 2005 issue with quotes from Mike Nelson (who as we know is part of RT, not CT).

I just checked and yes, indeed, O Brother received an F rating from Owen Gleiberman. That guy also does reviews on NY1 (the local all news channel here in NYC) and he’s really pretentious and awful.
@Neptune Man: that doesn’t surprise me, internet commenters are the worst people in the world. Except us of course.

Despite the theater seats in our favorite show, MST-type joking has always seemed to me what you do at home with your friends, while people yelling at actual movie screens seems more Rocky Horror-ish to me, and really should be reserved for special screenings. However, with the amount of money 20th Century Fox has made out of such an unlikely property over the last 30 years, it’s no wonder people keep trying to make lightning strike twice.

I have to sympathize with the quote above, from the foul-mouthed dissenter – if you paid to see a movie, then he’s right – no one wants to hear it. But I’ve been to a lot of late-night showings of bad movies (Elvira, Phantasm 2, the new Spiderman) and with the right audience, a guy like that, even having paid for his ticket, might have gotten himself booed by a majority of hecklers. I was lucky in Spiderman – the theater was sparsely populated (July 4, at night, when everyone else is seeing fireworks) and only my friend had to hear any of it. The screaming babies and toddlers in the theatre with us just wouldn’t have understood.
I think I’d be able to locate my lost love for Rocky Horror if the heckling of that was more spontaneous instead of having audiences who’ve “got the lines down.” I attempted this at the famed 8th St. Playhouse way back and when and got some good laughs in between the audience’s rehearsed lines (which sound more like chants or cheers than heckling).

Now, in the latest EW, MST3K comes in at #3 on their list of the top 25 cult shows of the last 25 years. And Mike gets mentioned this time! #3, that’s pretty good! They even mentioned KTMA by name, thus making it the only show on their list that had it’s origins on UHF! It seems like every time a list like this is compiled, MST keeps ascending higher and higher. And that’s a really good thing; it goes to show that MST keeps growing, and like all good humor, there’s more than enough timeless material to make up for any topical material. That, and everything old is new again. I mean, Dallas is back on tv, for example.
On a side note, I’m so glad that MST is so readily available, through Netflix, Amazon or DVD, and that it’s a healthy mixture of every era (minus KTMA, of course). This way, new fans will never be subjected to the horrible flame wars. To them, there’s always been every cast member! No such thing as a replacement in their world!
