I usually don’t read these kind of reviews–the ones by people with no published track record of any kind and take them seriously. I wonder if these anyone-can-put-it-on-the-net reviews should be put on here as links. Andrea Speed, in particular, seems intelligent and articulate but as a reviewer no better than most posting stuff here.

I do like what she said here, because it pretty much sums up what makes a great MST or CT ep for me:
“But what I’m waiting for is a movie so gloriously drunk on its own incompetence – and yet, in complete denial about it – that the CT crew can’t help but hit it out of the park.”

Not that I agree with her regarding “Legacy.” I haven’t seen it yet.

These two differents reviews just show how the same product can be seen in two differents ways. They are only interesting but nothing I would use to make a DVD purchase. I am going to buy CT movies no matter what if they are good or bad.

    BAAAAAAA!!!

So YOU’RE the one to blame for Rifftrax still being around!

If this is the film I think it is, it’s a remake of an equally awful film called THE GHASTLY ONES. Same director even (Andy Milligan–for whom $30,000 was a lush budget). I think the only real changes are the time period (the 30’s instead of the early 1900’s), and the cast.

Hey Jesus — maybe the fact that Rifftrax is funny and inventive, while CT is stale and boring is the reason it’s still around? Or maybe you’re a troll who should bugger off?

Wow, Jesus. I must say that i haven’t seen anyone else catch as much as flack on these comment boards than you do. Congrats.

Also, Lump516, i think a good handful of Andy Milligan movies have a plot somewhat like that.

OH NO! Can anyone say Joel vs. Mike ? Not again! Isn’t any inception of the M.S.T.3.K. crew a good thing for all of us? Better to have a few new thing’s still popping up from time to time( C.T. , Film Crew , Rifftrax etc.) than nothing at all , right?

I agree with arch hall 3rd’s sentiments. While I prefer Film Crew and Rifftrax slightly over CT, any way you cut it, they’re both projects from MST alum (win) and both, deliver laughs from folks who clearly have passion for their work (win).

In the last few months, I and some friends have enjoyed many rifftrax. While there were plenty of groans (especially in the case of of the Wicker Man, a movie I dare say is as insane as Manos), many guffaws, and maybe a few snorts, I don’t recall hearing “BAAAAA.”

  11. I downloaded the Rifftrax short “Drugs are like that awhile ago, and I think it’s incredibly good. The other day I downloaded the Rifftrax for Halloween and it’s not hard to sync at all. Also very good. I’m sold on the concept. Unfortunately, they don’t riff on a lot of movies I’d ever want to sit through, much less buy/rent. New big-budget bad movies just don’t hold the charm for me as old zero-budget bad movies. They’re just garbage from crook who could have done better with a minimal of effort, but don’t make that effort because they openly hate their audience and want to swipe their money.

  13. Re: Lump516’s comment: this LEGACY OF BLOOD is not the Milligan film. Milligan’s is also known as LEGACY OF HORROR, and was made in 1978, years after the film CT is riffing.

Yes, the director is not Milligan. As I noted in another thread, he directed a handful of movies and is best known to b movie fanatics for writing the delightful Acid Eaters…

  16. Yes, what Castle Monster said .

We don’t need a war here — apparently, Mike and Joel are both okay with what each other is doing, and we should be as well.

Not “The Legacy of the CUTE PUPPIES”? I wonder if that one would be MSTable, if it exists ;-)

  18. Meadows says:

Rifftrax and CT both have their pleasures, and I enjoy both. I do agree with Castle Monster that I think the riffing format just plain works best with z-grade schlock that no one has ever heard of than with big-budget Hollywood blockbusters. To me, watching an obscure movie like “Doomsday Machine” get riffed is far more interesting and enjoyable than watching, say, “Jurassic Park”. Because I wonder, “who made this thing??? And WHY??” To me, the bizarre quality of the “bad” movies MST3K and CT dig up just adds to the charm of the show.

Hollywood blockbusters are bad in a different way, and frankly I find them run-of-the-mill and boring. But they ARE slick, and I think that actually takes away from the experience a bit. I dunno…maybe it just makes it seem too easy.

In other words, for MST3K/CT to make something like “Manos” or “Oozing Skull” watchable (that is, something I would sit and watch for 90 minutes as opposed to turning off after 5) is a more remarkable accomplishment than riffing on “The Matrix”, which one can zone out and enjoy anyway, minus the riffing.

  20. Well, that wasn’t too bad. Maybe a tic below The Oozing Skull and a tic above The Doomsday Machine.

Yeesh, Legacy of Blood is one of the worst things I’ve seen MST or the alums tackle. Manos was horrid and Glitter was self-absorbed fantasy, but at least all of them had likable characters and a hint of plot. John Carradine got bit parts in some pretty bad lemons back then.

As for Rifftrax and CT, I like them both. Both have their strengths and weaknesses: the people on CT seems to only now be realizing there are other people in the room when they crack jokes, while the guys at Rifftrax play off each other with great ease. Meanwhile, I wish Rifftrax would aim their scorn at truly bad modern films and the occasional silly film — it’s not like Harry Potter or Indiana Jones needed commentary to keep them funny or fresh. And I’m pretending iRiffs doesn’t exist.

Seriously, I wish them all the best. If we can’t have a true MST3k reunion, this is a great 2nd best.

    *sigh*

I love both CT and Film Crew but have never bought a “Rifftrack” because it’s just damn inconvenient. If Mike & crew were making Rifftrax dvd’s I’d be there. That’s the ONLY reason I’m not into Rifftrax. CT are doing just as good a job riffing movies now as they were when they were on MST and I’m sure Mike, Kevin and Bill are doing the same. Stop with the unfair comparisons based on favoritism. It’s just stupidity.

“Jesus Thinks You’re A Jerk” can like whatever he wants.

I wish CT could pick a movie with a little better sound to it. If you can’t understand the muffled voices, the riffs are sometimes useless. Legacy was like a movie that was picked up out of someones trash.

I never tire of Trace doing the Charles Nelson Reilly giggle.

Kenotic, you just expressed what has bothered me about CT; I’ve bought all four dvds, and found them moderately enjoyable, with a few outstanding riffs, but there’s such a joylessness about it – it’s as if they’re riffing in a vacuum. Whatever people might think of Rifftrax (and I love the shorts, the movies not always), it’s lots of fun to hear them make each other laugh, comment on each other’s remarks, etc (which also worked in the Film Crew eps). This is also what made MST work so well, I think – they always came across as a bunch of friends getting together & having a good time. If CT could get to that point, with a little more interaction, maybe even a coffee break or something where they could discuss the movie they’re riffing, well, I’d enjoy it more.

“…the people on CT seems to only now be realizing there are other people in the room when they crack jokes…”

Totally. While I like CT, it has a very scripted, very sterile feel that just doesn’t set the mood for comedy. The show desperately needs some warmth.

As for our CT riffers’ stiffness–the mentioned lack of easy play, or should I say playfulness, between the players–I think this will pass with time. They may be veterans but it’s only their fourth ep. I expect by the tenth they will be soaring…

  27. In defense of my own journalistic integrity, CT actually sends me copies of the movies with the express intention of being reviewed. Take that for what it’s worth.
