I didn’t have Comedy Central when Mike took over so I missed it for a while. I was able to catch the MST Hour during some of that time but I only remember seeing Joel episodes then. I didn’t see Mike until Revenge of the Creature on Scifi. At first I mumbled to myself “who is this guy?” and I was upset that Joel was gone, but the ep was so funny (still one of my faves) that it only took a few minutes for me to adjust. Once I realized that Mike had been with the show all along, that made it much easier too. Truly, I love them both and I don’t think I could pick a fave.

Until Sci-Fi, I’d have listed all my favorite Mike moments as the characters he used to do on the Joel era: Jack Perkins, Morrisey, Torgo, Michael Feinstein, Hugh Beaumont Of The Apocalpyse. At first, I actually thought Mike was kind of wasted in a role that didn’t allow him to transform himself into different people.
I think my “turning point” was in whichever episode where he helped blow up Bobo’s planet. Something about that particular moment, when he forgets what he’s doing and asks the cult if they’ve tried a socket wrench on the A-Bomb, makes me laugh every time. It’s all good after that, and I really started to appreciate the chemistry of Mike and Bill.

“I think my “turning point” was in whichever episode where he helped blow up Bobo’s planet.”
================================
Yeah, but did you still feel that way when
he blew up a couple of more planets (granted
they were pretty much all accidents).
Well, At least the planets weren’t blown up to
help the Vogons put in an interstellar highway.

As I recall, there wasn’t much choice. I was too addicted to ever abandon the show, and anyway I “knew” that since the bots were still there it would be all right.
I will offer two tragicomic self-parodying host segment moments that resonate:
1, Mike’s brutally cruel portrayal of his younger self as the oblivious simpleton working at the dairy in “Time Chasers” (The bots: “He likes *Journey*? We’ve gotta help him!)
2. The covert impersonation of Rick Wakeman at the keyboard doing “Six Wives of Henry VII”, complete with wig. (Episode name not in memory bank)
And also:
3. As James Lipton (ENNIMB)
4. As Brad Roberts.
I thank you.

I must admit I was a little cool to Mike at first — the last segment of Brain that wouldn’t die felt sort of flat. But Beginning of the End sealed the deal —
(to a nauseous Crow) — some warm pork? Sorry, sorry!
Guys, this is SO not Illinois!
Man, I miss phone numbers like that.
Old Hickory!
I knew everything would be okay. In fact I laugh out loud much more to a Mike segment than a Joel.

There was a brief what-the-hell!?! moment, but it passed quickly.

One of my faves was the Turkey Day segment in which Mike, as a sauced-up Jack Perkins, gives Mr. B. Natural a big sloppy smooch.
“Well, I guess I’ll just go with my instincts.”

When I started watching MST3K, like many others, Mike was the host. So he never had to win me over. Some of my fave Mike moments:
Hobgoblins= Mike’s plot to fool Pearl with cardboard cutouts.
The Brain that Wouldn’t Die= Mike does not bring Tom into the theater.
Time Chasers= Mike playing Eddie. Great Stuff.
There are many more…these are the ones that popped into my head immediately!

I moved out to go to college and had no cable right around the time Mike took over so I held on to my belief that Joel was far superior well until the DVD box sets came out. So not only did I not take to Mike, but I was horrified one night when I saw him with a monkey in ancient Rome, Crow had a different voice and Dr. Forrester and TV’s Frank were nowhere to be seen!! Though in my defense I was drunk and tired, perhaps if I was sober and actually gave it a chance I would have come around  .
The Episode that won me over, not only to Mike but to Bill Corbett and Mary Jo as well was the host segments to Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, where they do their Public Pearl pledge. When Pearl and Brain Guy sing their Loving Lovers Love duet I couldn’t breath I laughed so hard. I am so glad my completest streak kicked in and I bought box set 4 and 5 otherwise I would have missed out on some comedy gems! (and I do find Mike as funny as Joel!!)
