Nice to see RT going back to their MST roots and riffing a cheesy old B&W.

BTW, how big are the VOD files?

Bought this yesterday…..What a awful movie…reminds me of ‘Rock Climbing’ and ‘Sand storm’ type MST movies. One of my favorite Rifftrax so far….Thanks guys! :-D

The size of the file depends on the quality you choose. It can be a few hundred MB if you choose a .wmv or a couple or more GB if you choose the high-quality .mpg

I got a few seconds into the preview, saw Jackie Coogan in the title card, stopped watching, and bought it. Not only does Coogan mean fashion, Coogan also means quality riffing material.

In the ACEG, wasn’t this mentioned as a “repeat offender”, whose owners had repeatedly asked for it to be used on MST3K, only for the Brains to deem it too bad even for the show to bother with? If so, this somehow seems even more appropriate than all the Rifftrax of Plan 9. Keep ’em coming!

It’s great to see the Riffers finally tackle one of my all-time favorite bad movies!

This one is a delerium dream.

.mpg – high quality download — 2 GB

  9. Kevin Spacey in the Mr. Magoo Story!

Horrible movie, good riffing but now I’m a little afraid what I’ll do if I run into a flamenco guitar player on the street and have a blunt object in my hand. I hold Rifftrax responsible for whatever happens!

This movie is bad on a lot of levels, but the music is brutal. It almost makes me want to send a letter of apology to Albert Glasser. Almost. Thoroughly enjoyed the riff, though.

That little Rifftrax logo on the cover is pretty nifty.

I remember Mary Jo saying in the Amazing Colossal Episode Guide that they passed on this one during Season 7,I believe and I can see why,but glad that Mike and the boys are doing it.Having said that, the music is brutal as said by #10 snowdog above..The music is worse than Chinese water torture. It’s like,’When will it end?” or “Would you please STOP with the fricking guitar playing for a couple of minutes?? Ughhh!!” Still,a perfect(depending on how you look at it,I suppose)movie for Rifftrax to do.If only I could get through that music…Turn it off! Turn it off! Turn it off!!

Ed Wood actually lifted the entire musical soundtrack for his second feature film, Jailbait. So yes, I’ve got that horrible guitar/piano soundtrack on TWO movies in my collection.

And for those worried about downloading: the stream function works great. So no need to download ever if you don’t want to. I’m not even going to download this one or Frankenstein’s Island unless I need for a trip, etc….

Can’t wait to watch this as it was always in my lists of most want to see riffed…the guitar is brutal, but hey, Third Man anybody?

P.S. Frankenstein’s Island was one of their best yet. An instant very MST-like classic.

I only read about this film for the first time a few months ago, and I immediately knew it was a must-see even if unriffed.

I think a double-feature with Frankenstein Island will be in order in the near future.

Dear Rifftrax; Thank you for not abandoning these classically bad movies. These old movies and your riffing are in my opinion your best work. Please continue to release these funny movies and I’ll continue to buy your dvds. AL

This one was perfect!! I know nothing of film making, but even I wouldn’t put overly dramatically annoying music over EVERYTHING and I wouldn’t pad my movie with endless walking scenes. I’d either write more for the characters to say OR I’d just submit it as a short film. Great job guys!!

My stomach was sore by the time this was over b/c I laughed so hard through practically the whole thing. I had to pause it close to the end b/c I was laughing so hard my eyes teared up and I couldn’t see and figured I was missing more jokes. So not only is this one very entertaining in a terrible way but it also gives you a good work out.

@ 21 Man, such that it is.

Myself and a movie-buff friend of mine are both into MST3k/Rifftrax and old cheesy monster movies, and when I first read about this one it looked so ridiculously bad that it was a prime target for us.

We also watched “The Giant Claw” sans riffing . . . classic. ; b

  25. losingmydignity says:

Yeah, the Giant Claw would be great and, most of all, From Hell It Came which is sort of the creme de la creame of bad 50’s movies.

  26. Raptorial Talon says:

I was actually surprised at how decent “Giant Claw” was in some ways. I mean sure, the monster is of course some of the worst cheese ever filmed in that era, and the technobabble for it is atrocious, but other than that the film is really very much par for the course by 50’s monster-flick standards.

I had originally been under the impression that the whole thing was under-produced and shoddily executed compared to similar films of the era . . . not that it wouldn’t still be a great Riffable experience, of course.

I watched Mesa of Lost Women and Jaillbait, that damn guitar will be buried in my memory for years and years. But the Spider Chick was cool. I hope the Rifftrax guy will do a giant monster movie, the already mentiones Giant Claw, The Monster that Challenged the World, King Kong vs Godzilla, the Black Scorpion…wait!

  28. JeremyR says:

The only thing wrong with The Giant Claw is the special effects, and that happened because they didn’t have enough money to hire a model maker like Ray Harryhausen, so they went with a puppet maker from Mexico (or something like that, it was on TCM). The acting is pretty good and Mara Corday is gorgeous.

Even the technobabble makes sense, sort of. They were talking about mesons, which I don’t think has ever been used in a movie that I’ve seen.

This though, is a Z-grade movie. If I can’t watch all of it unriffed, I can’t enjoy a riffed version.

And let me add my constant (and constantly ignored) request for DivX files. As I’ve said over and over, not everyone owns an iOS device. They used to include them, but stopped.

“Even the technobabble makes sense, sort of.”

No. No it does not. ; )

An “antimatter shield” would detonate in spectacular, nuclear-fireball fashion the instant it came into contact with our atmosphere (or any other substantial source of matter). There’s no beating around the bush on that one.

I mean, sure, most 50’s “science will beat the monster” flicks have pretty bad science, but Giant Claw is one of the most silly-terrible “explanations” I’ve seen . . . though I will grant I was impressed by their willingness to mention mesons and other aspects of particle physics. That is indeed rare.

#30 It’s just a movie. If you want “serious SCIENCE!” read a book on air conditioning repairing, or something.

You’ll note I was comparing it to other films of its genre and era, which, as I stated, I enjoy watching overall. This one was *particularly* bad compared to many such films (which I watch even though they have very low standards – that’s why they’re fun to mock).

Thank Jeebus for this. That Frankenstein Island semiliquid substance left a really awful taste in my mouth and this classic is working like an antiseptic charm. Thank you, Rifftrax, for making me laugh about spiders, again.

Okay, I have to say that I was one of those people who always says, “I’ll wait for the DVDs.” But I have to admit, I’m rethinking that stance, particularly from a space issue. If I burn these VOD movies to a DVD, then get one of those DVD cases that holds like 6 DVDs, make a nice little cover and print it out, then voila, I’ve saved a ton of space.

But part of my hesitation is I’m not super great with computers. So here’s a couple of questions: These VOD titles, they can be burned to a DVD, and then watched on any DVD player, right? And if so, is it easy to do? I read the FAQ on the Rifftrax site but there was a lot of stuff I didn’t quite follow.

After seeing how many great looking titles are VOD, I need to start getting them so I can watch them!!!

@darkknight – I can help you if you’re a Mac user. If not then I’m sure there are Windows savvy people on here instead.

But as a basic answer to your question: yes, you can burn VOD to a DVD and watch in a player (assuming the dvd player isn’t 15+ years old).

I use Toast. I download the .iso file of the movie (one of the choices you get when you buy a VOD from Rifftrax). You take the TS file and drop it in Toast and… perfect DVD in under 5 minutes.

I watched some of this movie last night. So far, it’s not terrible, certainly not as horrible as The Beast of Yucca Flats.

  37. Hot damn diggety! I downloaded a copy of the original version of Mesa Of Lost Women from the public domain archive at archive.org, and I included it in my Imaginary Encore Season 11 Episode List over at Club MST3K; I remember, as I watched it for the first time in many years, thinking what a shame it was that this stinkburger wasn’t featured on MST3K. As I recall, Ed Wood’s wife(?) Delores Fuller has a bit part, and the cheesy faux flamenco guitar soundtrack is also used in Jail Bait, Ed Wood’s attempt at film noir from 1954.

I like to refer to Mesa Of Lost Women as one of the best Ed Wood movies that wasn’t actually made by Ed Wood.

@ Dr. Carlo Lombardi: I’m a PC. Hey, that would make for a great commercial! It sounds like I need a special program other than just downloading the file and then transferring it to a blank DVD. I’ll have to study up on those. Thanks for the info!

  39. Dr. Carlo Lombardi says:

@darkknight – Yes, you are correct… sort of. It depends on your DVD player.

If you take a file you download and just drag it to a disc then it will be a data disc and not playable on most DVD players. Disclaimer: Some DVD players can read data files (avi, mp4, etc.) and some can read if they are encoded to divx. If your DVD player has a USB port then it might be able to read data discs (Phillips brand mainly).

How hard is it to burn for PC? Not too sure as I’m a Mac fanatic but I did a search over on cnet.com and found a free PC DVD burning program called “Burn4Free DVD Burning” after a few second of searching. They’re also known as download.com and all files are checked and scanned. I’d say take my word for it, but always research someone’s advice first as I might be a Russian scammer (in reality I’m a pudgy nightclub DJ in Ohio, which may actually be worse). I will say this, if you do download a free burner program go thru a safe site like cnet.

If you have any issues or questions feel free to ask as I’m always on the Rifftrax postings.
