Weekend Discussion Thread: Sleeping Pill Episodes

This one’s going to be a little different. Which episodes put you to sleep and why?
Here’s my list and I have to say I got a little drowsy just compiling it.
For this, I picked one from each season.

• 103- MAD MONSTER (with short: COMMANDO CODY PT 2)–I think it’s just the bad print, the dark, gray scenes and the slow pace. I’m usually snoring by the second host segment.
• 209- THE HELLCATS–I’m not sure why this one puts me out. Maybe it’s the dull sameness of the movie.
• 303- POD PEOPLE–It one may surprise some people, but this is my all-time No. 1 sleeping pill. I don’t think I’ve ever made it all the way through without falling asleep. The host segments are terrific, but the movie, ugh. Maybe it’s the new age music and all the fog, but I’m snoring in no time.
• 413- MANHUNT IN SPACE (with short: GENERAL HOSPITAL PT 1)–The short’s pretty sleepy all by itself, and the movie is just gray and dull, with endless takeoffs and landings and long conversations. Zzzz…
• 508- OPERATION DOUBLE 007–I think this may have more to do with the fact that I can’t follow the plot. My mind wanders and the next thing I’m curled up on the couch.
• 624- SAMSON VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMEN–This one starts well, and of course the segments, with Frank’s departure, are memorable. But the movie just drags.
• 705- ESCAPE 2000–Another movie i can’t make head or tail of, and soon I’m in dreamland. And believe me, you don’t want this movie playing while you’re half asleep…
• 807- TERROR FROM THE YEAR 5000–Talky, gray and tiresome.
• 908- THE TOUCH OF SATAN–Another movie with a very leisurely pace. Just doesn’t hold my interest.
• 1009- HAMLET–I like this episode more than a lot of people do, but the static filming and the dark, blank sets make my eyes droop.

I need a cup of coffee. What are yours?

Most of seasons 1 and 2. The worst may be Ring of Terror. So thin a story, yet with so large of cul-de-sacs. Plus the riffing was still in its formative stages. Awful! And by tacking a short onto the end, never has one seemed so long. I would’ve preferred seeing Frank and Forrester goof around for the last 15 minutes.

And if you guys think The Horrors of Spider Island is bad, try watching the non-MST3K version. It feels like it goes on for several hours.

oh, yeah, poppin an episode in before bedtime is what i do, so not to knock any episode in particular, but they all are perfect for falling asleep. I love them all equally…well the one’s i’ve seen. Kinda just started really getting into the MST3K, honestly. Wish i could be more episodes than the ones offered on dvd, but for now i have volumes 1-6 to get and that’s many nights of being lulled to sleep by wise ass robots. Ah….

    City Lights !!??
    The Charlie Chaplin movie?
Would it even be fare to riff a silent movie? :???:

By the way, I forgot to ask when the episode of the week was Teenage Stangler. In that one, Mike and bots, mostly Servo, kept saying “That’s me!” in a sing-song voice whenever the dective’s name, Anderson, was mentioned. The hell?

…hmmmm…..nope-can’t think of a single episode that puts me to sleep, now the un-msted versions would be plenty! But I’m honestly glued to the screen from start to finish waiting for that next great riff!!

I agree with BSBrian (105). Perhaps it’s a sign of middle age, but for me MST3K has been much more of a cure for depression than a sleep aid. The transition from late night to morning schedual did cause me to recalibrate my comic sensibilities, but eventually I came to look forward to my Saturday morning appointment. I do think that black and white eps are best for late night, and the color eps work at any hour. A cost-effective remedy when compared to therapy and considerably more useful.

Stickboy #104. This is a reference to the Danny Kaye musical biopic of Hans Christian Anderson.

    singin’:

    I’m Hans Christian Anderson!
    Anderson! That’s Me!

My wife has tried to watch Hamlet three times, and has fallen asleep everytime…

Coleman Francis tends to put me to sleep: The Beast of Yucca Flats and Red Zone Cuba.

    Thanks, I’m not a medium, I’m a petite.

Of course, finding out this way isn’t as funny as stumbing upon it my accident. But I don’t think I’d ever see an advertisement or blurb for a musical about the life of Hans Christian Anderson and say, “Now that’s what I’m in the mood for.”

true, at first blush it wouldn’t seem like a must-see, but it is a pretty good movie, once you take into account the innocent, 1950’s, family-oriented-musical context.

Beautiful visuals and the songs are very pleasing. Even though I haven’t seen the film in decades, I still find myself singing Thumbelina, Copenhagen and Inchworm.

Touch Of Satan has to be the most boring movie they ever did on MST3K. It’s unremarkable in every way yet not the kind of over-the-top bad that makes for an entertaining bad film. Dull premise based on silly superstition plus snail-like pacing makes this the dullest episode ever for me. Even Starfighters had more action and that movie had NO action!

Never had an episode put me to sleep, but thats probably because I don’t lay on a couch when watching tv. I sit on the floor indian style.
    Always.

I use my couch as a table.

If you just mean boring as hell episodes, I would have to say indestructible Man, Gunslinger, City Limits, and all KTMA episodes, as well as 90% of season one.

I do like The Corpse Vanished and the Hi Keeba movie, though. Oh, and Robot Monster is funny too, but I still think it needs re-riffed.

Any of the Hercules movies. Especially SAAAAAAAAAANNNNNDDDDDDSTOOOOOOOOOOOORMMMMMMM.

Almost all of the Japanese movies. Once they start riffing over and over about “upsetting shorts” I’m off to snoozeville.

Hamlet. It’s hard enough to sit through Shakespeare to begin with (sorry) but black and white dubbed German Shakespeare with sparse sets and zero action… even the riffing is lackluster. It was like they were afraid to make too much fun of it because even bad Shakespeare is still Shakespeare.

Red Zone Cuba. Everyone in the movie looks like they were injected with horse tranquilizers before filming began. The pace is sloooooooow and- once you actually do fall asleep- the theme song will give you nightmares.

Future War. I know it’s in the new set but the ridiculous plot and the endless fight scenes bore the poopie out of me.

By the way, on the occasion that my partner’s away and I have to sleep alone I ALWAYS put MST on to fall asleep to. It’s strangely comforting.

Sampo, this is a brilliant idea for a weekend discussion! I know I’m repeating whats already been said, but I thought I was the only one who was like this with MST. It’s not that we find the material boring, its the fact that this show has a strange comfort level. Its the equivalent of being in a room with four or five other people when you’ve had a long day, and the conversations those people have somehow relax you. Its more of a compliment to the show, not an insult. I also think that watching the show late at night (particularly during its heyday in the CC era) conditioned viewers to fall asleep with the show still on.

Okay, now my personal favs that act as a Horse Pill:

-102 Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy
    -105 Corpse Vanishes
    -208 Lost Continent
    -211 First Spaceship on Venus
    -all Gamera movies (5)
    -306 Time of the Apes
    -310 & 318 Fugitive Alien I & II
    -320 Unearthly
    -323 Castle of Fu Manchu
    -403 City Limits
    -508 Operation Double 007
    -510 The Painted Hills
-517 Beginning of the End (This one REALLY in particular!!)
    -518 Atomic Brain
    -524 12 to the Moon
    -605 Colossus & the Headhunters
    -606 Creeping Terror
-703 Deathstalker (my fav of Season 7, but I’ve viewed it so much its relaxing.)

For Sci-Fi, I’ve only seen most eps a small number of times, so I don’t have the same sleep factor involved. I guess “The Incredibly Strange…”, “Space Mutiny” and “Jack Frost” would best qualify in this category, since I’ve watched these more often than any other during that time.

MANOS THE HANDS OF IT did not hold my interest at all despite this being a classic episode. I think it was the quality of film, the sub-par riffing and the mediocre dull music that made me fall asleep. Admittedly the music during the credits was more like a sedative.
