Suddenly I have the urge to go to Safeway and buy a lifetime supply of powdered milk!

Rainy day in San Fran, thankfully no downpour while waiting in the long line outside. Luckily, I got an aisle seat in the third row, right in front of the music stands and monitors. After the slideshow of performers from this year (and years past) and the live organ music usual at the Castro Theatre, festival organizers David Owen, Cole Stratton, & Janet Varney came on stage to open the 11th SFSF. They highlighted this first weekend’s many shows starring members of tonight’s talent pool (many of which I will be attending – 7 over the next three days, many more in the weeks to come). Then showed a clip reel from the latest Rifftrax title, Captain America, a movie I enjoyed last summer but am looking forward to seeing riffed nonetheless. It got a lot of laughs from the nearly full house.
David then came back up to introduce our riffers, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. After some banter (they never mentioned the absent Mike Nelson) the show began:
• Jobs in Cosmetology (Kevin & Bill)
• Walking To School (w/ Cole Stratton & Janet Varney)
• Magical Disappearing Money (w/ David Cross)
• What Is Nothing? (w/ Bruce McCulloch)
• What Makes Things Float? (Kevin & Bill)
• Patriotism (w/ Eugene Mirman)
• Safety – Harm Hides At Home (w/ Paul F. Tompkins)
Sound levels were a bit wonky during the first couple of shorts but were eventually sorted out. In comparison to the previous two live “Shorts Shows” I’ve seen here this may have been the best so far in bringing each guest comedians sensibilities to the Rifftrax format. The scripts are, for the most part, the same as the studio versions with Mike, but there are new, of-the-moment riffs thrown in that made them fresh (Sandusky, Italian ships sinking, etc.). It also was nice that hosts Kevin & Bill chat for a few minutes with each guest when they come up, giving them a chance to be funny and to plug their upcoming shows. For me the standouts were PFT and David Cross, but the whole event (about 2 hours) was a great opening for the festival.
(note: Friday night will be Bill’s “CineMadness” show w/ guest Kevin – I plan on posting a review of that here also)

Oh let there be a DVD or some way of seeing this… the idea of two former Brains and a former Kid In The Hall riffing together makes me tingly.

I was there last night and Finnias has given a great round up. I will only add that I laughed my ass off.
Finnias Jones and anybody else in he SF area going to either Friday night’s CineMadness show or the “Thrilling Adventure Hour” on Saturday, PLEASE come up and say hi. I love to put names with faces.

Had the pleasure of meeting “Finnias Jones” at last night’s “Cinemadness” show. It was in a small theater and it was about half full due to a cold pounding rain that I think kept a lot of people away. The show was fun, including readings and songs with the general topic of movies. Paul & Storm played their new single about George Lucas, Bill and Kevin sang a couple of RiffTones songs, Kevin read from “A Year a the Movies,” there was a little improv with audience members which got pretty blue had people (me) roaring, Lots of fun.

Here’s my take, reposted from A Special Thing.com:
CineMadness with Bill Corbett and Joseph Scrimshaw
and special guest Kevin Murphy
10:30pm The Eureka Theatre
The Eureka is a small room, and was only about half full, but the crowd was enthusiastic. This was a variety show of funny talks about personal memories of how movies affect ones life, interspersed with improv skits with audience members, and a few songs.
Star Wars was a recurring theme. The other guests were Paul & Storm who sang their song “Thanksgiving” which pleads with George Lucas to stop messing with the SW legacy, and Josh Cagan who gave a hilarious recollection of staying up all night with friends to see The Phantom Menace at its 4AM New York premiere. Kevin Murphy played ukelele (!) as the group played Monty Python’s “Galaxy Song” (from The Meaning of Life). Bill sang lead on the Rifftones classics “Plans 1 Through 9” and “Sparkly Vampires.”
And on a personal note, as a MSTie, it was a big deal for me to finally meet Chris “Sampo” Cornell, head honcho of Satellite News, the MST3K fan website where I have been been active for many years. He was in town for the weekend just to see the Rifftrax related shows and to visit SF for the first time. Had a nice chat with him and friend Cheryl. A shame the weather was so dreadful.

A few days late, I know, but I just want to add that Night of the Shorts was awesome. I got to meet Kevin, and he signed my copy of “A Year at the Movies” as a birthday present for a friend of mine.
