I thought this was a really fascinating interview. It delved pretty deeply into a not often covered topic.

All I saw was a video of the intro of the show…no link to any interview…..I am confused.

Read the last line, where Joel says, “I am the creative lead for media for an upstart aerospace company called Cannae, which has invented a new type of satellite engine called the Q Drive.”

Here’s the link to the company’s site:

Talk about an invention exchange. Whoa!

Yeah, a really fascinating read. It’s really kind of neat how well everything worked out, considering they were making a lot of it up as they went along.

Fascinating read, Joel is one cool cat. I’m glad that a giant spider invasion of savings at Menard’s helped in building the look of the show.

Wonder if we’ll ever get those pre-production drawings?

Good stuff! I never get tired of hearing cast/crew talk about the birth/early days of the show.

I also never tire of hearing about the making of MST3K. However, after 20 years of obsessively reading anything about the show I can find, it’s rare to find new info. So I really dug this interview, which had some fresh nuggets- for instance, I had never heard mention of Harlan Tarbell the Mystery Scientist.

The ‘night on freak mountain’ SNL sketch Joel mentions is available to watch on netflix. The Zappa episode is interesting and a little tense as Zappa was totally drugs-free at the time, and the SNL cast was most certainly not!

I always have loved the Gizmonic Institute buildings and sets, both in their Season 1 and later forms. To me it was like they had this whole other world that we never really saw, but would have loved to.
