I wish that theater would do a MST3k marathon. That would be worth the drive, but I’m not going to drive 3 hours to watch one episode, as much as I’d like to watch MST in a theater.

I’ll always wonder why the comedy central and sci fi [now sy fy] never tried to rerun the show? Why not rebroadcast it? It’s already in the can so no production costs. There are only three main cost factors copyright payments for the film rights holder and BBI with the third being advertising. Why not do a special for the 20th anniversity. That was a missed opportunity. MST3k fan base is as big or or even bigger when it was still on the air. I know that it will never be back on tv regulary but how about something more fequent than never. Thanksgiving and MST3K have a long history together why not do a once a year marathon on the hoiday. This may introduce new fans to the show and bring back causual fans. [read that as more money for dvd sales and more money for charging advertisers on the re-broadcast]. Bottom line is I’d rather watch an bunch of MST3K than sharktopus or freakosaurus or any of the other low budget, under written, no talent cast crap that passes for entertainment on SY FY or the unfunny comedy on CC.

Keep in mind too we’re talking about a two-hour block of programming. The “MST3K Hour” where they tried to break the eps into two pieces didn’t really work all that well — it broke up the flow of the episodes.

When Comedy Central was just getting started having a two-hour show was great. Now that they’re more established having to clear two hours out of the schedule may be seen as ‘not so great’.

It’s one of the things that has always made MST3K unique but at the same time it’s one of the things that limits it’s being sold into syndication.

P.S. — I’d love for them to do this sort of thing in my area. In fact, I’d love to see something like a monthly showing.

Comedy Central has pretended MST3K was never on their channel for about 15 years now. I don’t think they like the show there and would probably claim South Park jump started the existence of their network rather than MST3K.

SyFy/Sci-Fi would be the network I suspect would give the program another shot on the air since it appeared a bit more amicable in rerunning the show after they canned it, but even then I suspect not.

If re-runs ever get back on cable tv, it will probably be on some other unrelated network specialized in running old syndicated repeats.

I’m guessing that there are probably all kinds of fees and royalties to be paid to the original film makers as well if they want to show reruns.

I am stuck working on this night, so unless I can find a way to get out of work, I can’t go to this. And I have gone to most of them. I am bummed, as I had even purchased the 2 disc Manos that Shout! put out, even though I already had the movie. Le sigh.

I’m with you, Zee. I’d make a roadtrip from NY to Philly for a marathon. I even have a friend who lives nearby with a spare bedroom.

    @ #5 pablum:

I agree with you completely. MST3K was The Comedy Channel/Comedy Central’s flagship show for six seasons. Season Seven was a slap in Best Brains’ faces. The only reason it was canceled was the new powers that be at CC wanted to go in a different direction (South Park) and the new Prez of the network did not like the show.

The right people will get it.

Nobody here may have lots of love for the modern SyFy Channel, but the Sci-Fi Channel did give us three more seasons. For that I thank them.

I’m sure rights issues are a big factor in bringing the original show back on the air. As for time slots, it seems every other day a network is running an all-day marathon of some show or other (like, for example, USA Network does with “NCIS”), so clearing two hours once a week might not be too much of a problem. Personally, if the cost could be managed, I could see MST show up on AntennaTV, which specializes in older shows. Or, if they didn’t care about a backlash from ultra-serious film afficiandos, even TCM.

As for the Colonial, I’m considering going to this one, but I’m not sure. It’s a long drive at night, but it’s a great venue.

Only a 2358 mile drive for me. Plenty of time to recreate the driving scenes and talk about losing pounds of butter!
