Our pals at the MST3k.com site mention — sort of in passing — that two new single titles are coming from Shout! Factory, episode 908- THE TOUCH OF SATAN and 518- THE ATOMIC BRAIN. And they’re right! They should be available Oct. 16.
Update: Shout officials confirm that “Atomic Brain” will DEFINITELY have a stinger, unlike the Rhino release.
Finally the Atomic Brain-it better have the Stinger – that is the whole reason for me to get this, the anal completest that I am :) Actually it is part of the show so it should be there, that is not anal at all ! :)
Joels Hair
Joels Knees
Anal complexional man that I am !!
Oh lord give me some therapy
This is where the fish lives!
You see? That’s why I hate cats!
a couple good ones! I wish they’d do Riding With Death..
They should stop with the Rhino re-releases and release some unreleased episodes. A couple single episode discs in between the 4-disc sets would be nice…and would probably make more sense…
Not exactly two of the strongest episodes of the show for my taste, both have slow, dismal, dull movies, Atomic Brain is nearly unwatchable even with the jokes, but I’m always glad to see as many MST3K episodes in print as possible. If I didn’t already own them I’d still buy them now that they are back in print.
I gotta agree w/comment 5. STOP w/the Rhino re-releases and release some UNRELEASED episodes! I’m pretty sure if you are on this website, you already own the original box sets that have these episodes included in them.
There are people who passed on old box sets for one reason or other, and then when they finally went to get them they were out of print or perhaps their old one was lost/damaged and would like to get it again.
I don’t begrudge this as long as it doesn’t take away from releasing the previously unreleased stuff.
I’ll hold off on The Atomic Brain until someone can confirm they finally put the stinger back in. Then I’ll probably take the plunge for a re-purchase. That’s one Rhino glitch that’s always really bothered me.
Personally I think their release plan makes perfect sense. They have the rights to the Rhino catalog of episodes so they do internet only sales of limited inexpensive pressings with no features, which would require additional money and clearance and payouts.
These are great for newer fans who didn’t get the chance to pick through all the boxsets that have come and gone, but also perfect for longer standing fans who didn’t buy certain boxsets because they contained episodes or eras they weren’t crazy about. Perhaps those who weren’t interested in a shorts disc skipped volumes 2,3,6 – I did because we had the shorts volumes on VHS plus with an overabundance of Rifftrax shorts available I now prefer to only watch these shorts in the context of their episodes. With the addition of “The Atomic Brain” three of these episodes will have been re-released, people are going to wish they bought them when the day comes that the Rhino copies have long disappeared and these too are out of print.
The Manos re-release represents a different side of the market, special editions of essential episodes that don’t belong in a new boxset or limited format. I do think the Jam Handy program seems hastily combined with it when instead it could have contributed to a more thematic boxset. For the Shorts people they could have actually created an unnumbered boxset for very low cost containing volumes 1,2 and 3 (which was only available as an “Essentials” bonus for a limited time), and “Mr B’s Lost Shorts” packaged with things like the Jam Handy feature since there would be more room on the discs than with episodes. Along with saving money from not having to pay rights for any films they could also even get away with using single layer discs for some of them, and with the money saved they could either offer them cheaper and more “gift-able” or perhaps with Steve Vance artwork showing characters from each volumes shorts versus the Bots, or a mini-doc with the cast talking about their history with the shorts, or maybe just a “Coily” statue… but I seem to be drifting. Safe to say I’d re-buy the Shorts like that, much like I will be buying the new Manos despite my Rhino single copy because of the new features; so either way they bring in the double dip portion of their audience.
In the end new boxsets should be the place to premiere unreleased episodes. Considering the singles will cost you anywhere from $15-20 I don’t see why anyone would have a problem dropping $40 on a boxset when you get 4 shows PLUS extras, even if you don’t like a particular episode – and lets be fair, it is an internet shopping fact that you can find all of the Shout! sets for way under retail price still new or maybe only slightly used at many major online retailers.
The quality of the relaunched volumes sets a precedent that would be compromised if ‘never before released’ episodes were singled out and released as bare bones editions. They have proven that they listen to what people have been asking for since they kicked off their singles titles with two of the shortest production run/available episodes (excluding “Colossal Man”) and now even a complete Atomic Brain is on the way. These are re-releases that repair or improve upon long standing Rhino issues, we’re likely to see a much better print of “The Dead Talk Back” sooner than later.
So I say trust Shout! Factory completely and consider this: so far 22 new MST3K DVDs will have been released in 2011, with 2 more singles possible in December keeping with their every other month release pattern. 22-24 episodes including the Master Ninja’s and 7 Sandy Franks to add to the collection that already included more than half of the entire run of the series.
Looks like another reason to not release new episodes as singles is because at this rate they are going to run out of episodes for boxsets!
Are their any other titles from Rhino that lacked a stinger that Shout has relessed? Or for that matter any shout factory titles that are a better film quality than the rhino relesses? My goal is to put them all in a binder and i like that the labels match,
Thanks
Technically, in order to be complete, shouldn’t the episodes also include “Turn Down Your Lights (where applicable)” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000, Show 424, Reel 1” where applicable? From what I’ve seen, most episodes with Lights lack the title card, and I haven’t seen a single Reel card.
An anthology of Reel cards would be acceptable, but clearing the rights for all of the screenshots… I wish they would’ve been included from the outset.
I like the fact that Shout is re-releasing some of the singles. It allowed me to get Red Zone Cuba and Beginning of the End on DVD. And since it doesn’t seem to be interfering with the release of the box sets, I say keep it up Shout!
#7 “I’m pretty sure if you are on this website, you already own the original box sets that have these episodes included in them.”
I’m on this website and the Gamera Box Set was my first one. So I like these re-releases. I’d like to see Shout! Factory re-release all the Rhino Box Sets in Shout! Factory style packaging.
I wish I could trade my non-sticker version back in for a stingered one. There are several parts of my body I’d like to do similar but Shout! doesn’t carry those..
What was the stinger anyway? I didn’t even realize the stinger was missing.
Manos has the Reel One part and the Gamera set does have the Turn Down Your Lights
Since I was ramen noodles-and-dirt poor (not that I’m rolling in it now) when the Rhino box sets were coming out, I only have four of them. I’d love to have them re-issued by Shout! Factory. Their quality is far superior to the old Rhino releases, and the package design is much more attractive.
Also love the single-disk releases, especially the later Sci-Fi episodes that I have seen. As much as I love Manos, a third release is a bit much – it was released by Rhino as a single, then as a part of MST3K: The Essentials and now Shout! is doing their (probably far superior) take on it. I’m on the fence about buying the latest version – the only reason I’d buy it would be because of the added content.
Hoping Shout! can do a Select version of 1003 – Merlin’s Shop at some point. The Rhino disc was SO DARK, that I’d happily shell out for a bare-bones disc done properly.
I don’t know what the stinger REALLY is, but I’d like to think it might be:
Gigolo’s wiggly Popeye face when he gets stabbed,
Maria gently falling to her death,
or Mrs. March negotiating the stairs (with oboe accompaniment).
@ #12: I asked Brian Ward on the Shout! forum a while back if he could start including Turn Down Your Lights… on the DVDs. He said it wasn’t on there before because it wasn’t on the master tapes provided to him, but that he would try to include it from now on. He was as good as his word, it is on the Gamera DVD set.
I’ll keep buying all titles I can. The nature of the show means rights issues can lock episodes for an unmeasurable length of time. The Godzilla episode on VOL X may never be released again. On the side topic of quality. Please strive to give us the best picture and sound with the most complete version possible. I would like to see some outakes. I know they most extra footage is just camera shot set up and retakes of muffed lines and may not be funny or even interesting but there has got to be something you show that has some value. I’d like it even if it is just one of the cast smiling at the camera for a few second. Every second more of the show is pure gold to me.
Have to admit it always bothered me that the Rhino version lacked the stinger (but I probably won’t buy the single re-release only for that!).
The stinger is a shot of Anita screaming. I like your suggestion of the Popeye moment better, CPE.
vol. 3 is the only set I don’t have so here’s my plan. buy atomic brain and the unearthly, courtesy of the shout singles, and I’ll only need sidehackers, which maybe shout will deem re-releaseable some time down the road. don’t really care if I have the shorts collection
So, do the Shout re-Rhino’s have the new sound-bite “Adventures of Crow & Servo” menus, or just the recycled old ones?
(I wouldn’t know, since I still have all my old Rhino boxes.) :)
Go to the store.
Buy canned peaches and dishwashing liquid.
I hope pre-orders are coming soon…
Maybe now we can get Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and maybe Dead Talk Back with a better “Master”
The Master would approve wouldnt he ???
I’ll only buy Atomic Brain just for the stinger and complete bumpers.
I need to say something about their release Unearthly btw: I really don’t like how Shout Factory didn’t include the MST bumpers for that episode like Rhino previously did just because “it was a shout select title”. I’m not trying to bash them, but that’s just my personal opnion.
I just got TISCWSLABMUZ, and decided that I liked my own self-dubbed version better. Especially the audio, which is so flat in the rerelease.

>So, do the Shout re-Rhino’s have the new sound-bite “Adventures of Crow & Servo” menus, or just the recycled old ones?
Neither. Its just a static menu. These are barebones releases.
After purchasing Shout Factory’s Beginning of the End MST3K reissue I’ve had my doubts about the quality of these. There were several visual errors on the Shout Factory version not found on the Rhino version. It did include the bumpers Rhino left out, but that was the only thing that could be considered better about it.
I only started buying MST3K DVD’s about the time Shout acquired the license, so these Rhino re-releases are great for me! Don’t paint all MSTies with the same brush people. Oh, and finally I can get Touch of Satan, which in my opinion is one of the funniest episodes.
Peanut farmers have a rough life.
Two good ones.
The Touch of Satan has always reminded me of when I was a teen, a friend and I were at school reading all the scribblings on an old table (an no, we did not vandilize it ourselves).
One scribbling read “Santan Rulz!” Hilarious.
Well, you had to be there….
I’d love to see more volume 9 episodes rereleased. That volume was hardly in stores, more eps deserve another chance. ISCWSLABMUZ is out, any chance for the other three? Or two, assuming only one episode was the cause for the fast OOP.
I sure hope he said “peanuts”.
