Update: Vol. XXI/Gamera Vs. MST3K Set Reviews

Ian Jane of Rockshockpop.com is the first to offer a really detailed, extensive review of the upcoming “Gamera Vs. MST3K” set.

Our pal Bruce Westbrook has a review

Over at DVDVerdict, Judge Erich Asperschlager calls it “tons of fun”…

Kevin Pytle at wtf-film.com calls the set’s arrival “one of the more phenomenal home video developments of the year.”

Noel Murray of The AV Club says “These Gamera shows hold up.”
“They find a way to keep the laughs coming” says an unsigned Popculturereport.info review.

“This is a stellar set” says James McCormick at Criterioncast.com.

John Sinnot at DVD Talk says “These episodes are some of the best TV ever.”
An unsigned review at geeksofdoom.com says this set “emerges as the best collection of the show Shout! has issued to date.”

Rod Lott at the Oklahoma Gazette calls it “another great set from Shout! Factory.”

R.L. Shaffer at dvd.ign.com says the set is “well worth a spin.”

An unsigned review at Schlockmania.com calls it: “a winner for MST3K fanatics and kaiju eiga enthusiasts alike.’

The set came in as number 6 on Entertainment Weekly’s “must list.”

Andrea Speed at cxpulp.com (?) calls it “a stellar set.”

New: Nick Lyons at DVDCorner calls it “a fantastic DVD set that is a must own.”

I will update this post with more reviews as they come in.

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of reviews, Nick Lyons at DVD Corner has a review of the “Hamlet” re-release–and he likes it!

Also new: In addition, Nick Lyons has reviewed “Shorts To-Go” and “Old Tyme Shorts Roundup.”

Amazon is really getting crappy on their pre-orders. I pre-ordered the two newest Rifftrax shorts DVDs from them and it was two weeks after they were released for them to be delivered…and that was AFTER the estimated delivery time. I doubt I’ll be pre-ordering anything from them again any time soon.

Apparently Amazon’s ears were burning because I got a ship notification this evening! So anyone else who chose Super Saver shipping, your sets might have shipped today too.

    @ Chief?McCloud!:

I got a recent shipment from Shout! and it had the 2011 catalog. The date for XXII is indeed 12/6/11.

    @ jayk359:

I would take that thing right on back and swap it. Don’t hesitate either! I’ve been in your spot before where I got a box set and there were dents on the box or something like that. They understand swaping for the same item when you are in some way dissatisfied (either it doesn’t work or there is some sort of damage to the packaging).

    Best of luck.

@jayk359 #50… you might try the trick I used on my 20th Ann. set tin. Put a little bit of pressure on the lip of the door right where it goes over the little nub on the side that holds it shut and just SLIGHTLY bent the metal in a tiny bit so that when it goes over the side there is more friction/pressure holding it shut. Do it just slightly and bend it without it even being noticeable. With my 20th set the door was fine at first, but after opening it a couple of times it felt too loose. This fixed it so it shuts noticeably tighter. I just looked at my XXI set tin box and it looks like the side itself is a little flimsy on this one, so you could do the opposite as well, slightly bending the side out a bit right where the cover snaps over it. Again the key is to flex it out just slightly without actually putting any noticeable bends or dents in it. It’s not hard if you use caution and good judgment when doing it.

Anyway one nice improvement in this tin box over the 20th Ann. set is that they actually made it large enough to get the cardboard DVD slipcase out without damaging it. That is a nice touch. I just got this set in the mail today and I’ve already made it through two episodes. The Gamera MST documentary short is really nice. It’s great to hear the guys talking about what Gamera meant to the development of the show.

at comment above, the doc. was really nice, but was anyone wondering why Kevin Murphy was absent? I mean they had J. Elvis, who was in the KTMA years when they did the first run of Gamera movies, but no Kevin Murphy. I was waiting for him to pop up. and waiting…and waiting.

Seems they had 3 Cinematic Titans and he who shall not be named aka Jim Mallon. ;-)
Mike was head writer and also played the big guy himself (Gamera of course).

Put on Gamera last night, and fell asleep during the invention exchange, but it isn’t their fault. It was just really late for me to start an episode, but it’s a nice way to go to sleep that I haven’t experienced in quite a while.

I got mine a couple days ago from Amazon.
BUT, they shipped it in a bubble wrap lined envelope in stead of a box. Not smart. I was VERY lucky it wasn’t dented. If it had been I would have definitely returned.

I will order from somewhere else next time.

That aside, I love it! Cool tin box and cool MST3K’ed movies!

And Shakespeare keeps referring to HamNET in the episode.

Kali, Hamnet was Shakespeare’s real life son who died in 1596 at age 11. There has been a lot of speculation that the writing of Hamlet was in part influenced by his son’s death. So “HamNET” is not a mistake in the TZ episode you’re referring to.

The Gamera box is great! After all five episodes, I felt overdosed, but then had to go back and watch Guiron again – it’s the one I remember best from the 4:30 Movie in the ’70’s. BTW, Hamlet is a great episode – in general, I give the highest marks to the Sci-Fi episodes, especially, once Pearl and crew are settled at the castle (and Bill Corbett is settled with the voice). Given that, the Gamera praise should be regarded as higher than it appears!

My own review of the set is up at http://www.facebook.com/notes/fourth-day-universe/we-love-you-cornjob/10150277597201544

The verdict: I loved it! Almost as much as the burning love Kenny had for Tibby!

Even with using the sometimes slower free shipping option at Amazon I still had my Gamera set just 2 days after release date and at the low, low price of $39.99 for what is an awesome 5-disc collector set.

    How would you snuff Gaos?

Even though I preordered this through Amazon, I still didn’t get it until Tuesday the 9th. Don’t know why I bothered ordering it early.

Anways this is a very nice set, the tin is cool and the extras look great.

But as I was putting it on my shelf with my other MST3K boxes I was reminded of something. I seem to recall we had a chat with somebody from Shout! a while back and I brought up the idea of putting the original episode#s on the spines of the DVDs for easy reordering outside of the boxes. I thought the idea was well received by the rep who was here, but I haven’t seen it happen yet.

Jay @ 67….yeah, ya know, I was reflecting on the same thing as I gazed at the otherwise superb job done by Shout with this new release. Why…………and, oh Why is it so difficult for them to add a very simple addition as the episode numbers????
As I considered this question, it occured to me, there m u s t be something in their reasoning that tells them “oh no…the episode numbers?…oh no, we can’t have THAT”
So,…what IS that? WHAT is their reasoning that the episode numbers displayed is not a good thing?
    Any thought-anybody?
