Weekend Discussion Thread: What You’d Like to See on DVD

Alert reader Scott writes:

What do MSTies think of the Rhino and Shout! DVDs in general? What did Rhino do better and vice and versa? What would they like to see as future Shout!
extras?
For me, I’m not a big fan of the stock Shout! DVD covers…I wish they would
get rid of Roman numerals already and mention the episode numbers. “The
Making of MST3K” would make for a great extra.

And while we’re at it: What movie (never mind the rights issues) would you most like to see in an upcoming set?

My thoughts: Even though some of the same people were at both places, it seems pretty clear to me that Shout “gets” MST3K more than Rhino did, especially at the end. The figurines alone show that. I don’t have a problem with the Roman numerals, and I think relying too heavily on the episode numbers might be too confusing for the casual buyer.

As for extras, I would love to see all the TV specials and I really enjoy the introductions by the cast members. The interviews with cast members can be hit and miss, but they’re at their best when Shout is able to coax backstage info about the movie of the movie out of them.

As for an episode I’d like to see, no question: 610- THE VIOLENT YEARS.

What are YOUR thoughts?

As far as I’m concerned, I am happier with how Shout! is doing the box sets than I am with how Rhino did them. Here are my points:

    DESIGN:

Rhino, I felt was doing waaaay too much time and effort on packaging the box sets and that at the end of the day just jacked up the price. Really, I could do without a fancy box set case, just give me the episodes at an affordable price — I mean, figure the amount of royalties and payouts they have to do to get some of these episodes commercially released.. I’d be content with a cheap graphic layout on the box set and disc design. Shout! has the better idea there, reusing the same format for each box set. Nothing that spectacular. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of those Rhino box sets were well done and very creative, but I don’t think it was the best way to focus the value of the set.

    EXTRAS:

I’m sorry, but Rhino’s extras really sucked. They were pathetic when compared to the stuff Shout! offers. Touting the movies “original trailer” as an extra is kind of weak. The worst of them all was the MST3K Jukebox extras they were doing. Of all the archival footage you could possibly grab and that’s what you choose? Clips of songs from various episodes?

Shout! has done a much better job with cast and crew interviews (both MST3K and the actual movies, although the one for Master Ninja was a bit of a stretch), Convention panels, the MST3K Hour segments for various episodes, the Turkey Day variant of Night of the Blood Beast. Shout! gets it when it comes to the stuff that people are looking for. Also the mini-documentaries they make for various movies (Such as the Beast of Yucca Flats, Santa Claus etc. etc.) are an interesting addition to the films.

I think the only good special feature Rhino ever did was the Assignment Venezuela short that was on the MST3K CD-Rom game.

    MOVIE SELECTION:

There just came a point where the selection of movies that Rhino was providing was… Tepid at best.. Shout! has been able to change things up and get a lot of those long sought after episodes. The fact that Rhino goofed on three particular rights issues (The Colossal Man, World of the Prehistoric Women ((or whatever)) and Godzilla VS Megalon) is just unprofessional. In the case of the Godzilla episode… I’m glad I was one of the few who snatched up a copy before it disappeared.

Then there were the muck up with Killer Shrews… Someone mentioned the Dead Talk Back and wanting a “proper release” of it. I doubt there will be, I think the flaws in the DVD were actually caused by a flaw in the master (much like one of the episodes that was in one of the recent Shout! releases… I forget the episode, but at least Shout! had the courtesy to put a notice on the DVD to tell you, instead of waiting for people to complain)

The flaws in video are not really a big issue with me. At the end of the day, as much as I’d like official DVD releases of MST3K episodes to be the best possible quality, lets face it, any commercial release is going to look WAY better than the Tape-Trade bootlegs that are out there. I’m sorry, but no matter how many flaws the Beta Master tapes of these episodes might have, your VHS copies will look like ass in comparison (that’s my kind way of asking people to just stop complaining).

    SHORTS DISCS:

I never liked them. Now when I say I don’t like them, it’s not that I didn’t like the shorts. They are funny. However, I thought that for a box set, they could have made the effort to find a fourth episode to put on the DVD’s.

The only sort of collections of shorts I would actually like to see released by Shout! would be a compilation of all the serials on one disc, each chapter played back to back. Undersea Kingdom, The Phantom Creeps, Commander Cody, etc. Because it would be nice to have them all collected together on one disc. If I’m not mistaken all of these serials are now public domain, so I don’t see why this would be a problem.

SHOUT! LACKING CHAPTER SELECTION/EPISODE LISTING/CAST OF MOVIES ETC.

This is something I hear people griping about all the time, and frankly I don’t really see the point in having these things. Firstly, Shout! has said that they didn’t include chapter selections because it’s a cost saving measure. Which, I’m going to have to side with. If you’re going to be paying a lot of money for the rights to the movies to each episodes, I’d cut whatever unnecessary costs as possible… And frankly, I fail to see the need for chapter selections. Now that Shout! has made a point to make the chapter breaks between host/movie segments I don’t see a problem anymore. Anyone who STILL gripes about this is, in my opinion, just too lazy to hit the chapter skip button on their remote.

The lack of episode numbers and cast and crew credits for the movies on the Shout! packaging is another nitpick I think is unnecessary. I mean really, we live in the internet age. And I’m not talking about the internet of the 1990’s where you actually had to hunt for information. You have Wikipedia, IMDB, the MST3K WIKI, and all sorts of other resources. If you’re that curious to know this information then just get off your duff and look it up. It’ll take you three seconds.

    EPISODES I’D LIKE TO SEE:

A lot more Season 1 and Season 7. It’s good that Shout! Is doing more Season 1 episodes, but I’d also like to see more of the short and sweet seventh season.

Specifically, I would kill for an official release of the Incredible Melting Man, my favorite bad sci-fi movie of all time (Seriously, watch the uncut version, it is hilarious). I’d also like to see Diabolik and Squirm too if that’s not asking too much, Santa.

The soon-to be released Gamera set makes me hope that Shout! actually works at getting those other “Don’t Hold Your Breath” episodes collected together in a box set. Which if I’m not mistaken are the Godzilla movies and the Universal Monster movies that appeared in the early Sci-Fi episodes.

But what I think Shout! should do is go through the MST3K catalog one more time and confirm what episodes haven’t been released that feature a movie that is now in the public domain and push those out, then focus the profits generated on those to work on getting the movies that will cost money to get out.

    EXTRAS I’D LIKE TO SEE:

When they start releasing episodes that were remakes of KTMA episodes (and I’m hoping they’re doing this with Gamera) is include the KTMA host segments. I’m not really interested in seeing the different riffing, but it would be a nice feature to add (Maybe offer it as an option like with the Turkey Day alternates for Night of the Blood Beast).

The various MST3K specials done for the Comedy Network would be cool also.

  2. Matty-O says:

I’m pretty pleased with how Shout! is handling their DVDs for MST3K. Sure, Rhino’s was more playful with the spiffy pop-up book sliders and such they did with their packaging, but there’s something to be said for the greater functionality of Shout’s approach with the thin-cases.

Of the episodes released, the only ones left that I’m really looking forward to are…
    .
    Puma Man
Day the Earth Froze (or is that one out and I’m spacing it?)
    It Lives By Night
    Agent for H.A.R.M.
    .
Also, I’d love to see an all Gamera set, though licensing could be a bitch on that. Beyond that, I’m just enjoying re-watching a lot of the goodness I forgot over the years. It’s all good, baby (though some are better than others).

  3. Matty-O says:

Oh! Supplemental thought! In the coming DVD sets, it would be cool if they included one of the “Clowns in the Sky” music CDs; but only one per set. Maybe have them remastered to make it worth the expense.

  4. Zee says:

    I prefer Shout’s bland-yet-uniform packaging over Rhino’s hideous, slapdash,what-the-frak-am-I-looking-at monstrosities.

One DVD extra I would like is a collection of those original commercials the brains would make for specific episodes, from about season 3 – season 7. They would make at least 2 per episode- one saying “This week on MST3k…” and another saying “Up next on Mst3k…” These were like like bonus little 30 second host segments. Fond memories include Joel showing off his guns in the HERCULES AGAINST THE MOONMEN ad and Crow being covered up by a giant comedy central logo in the SANTA CLAUS one.

I also like when they have interviews/introductions with/by the BRAINS. This might be kind of a lame suggestion, but I wouldn’t mind more new material with the cast ‘in character’ (kind of like in the ‘getting rid of your MMMM vs. MMMM DVD bit on the GIANT GILA MONSTER disc…).

I wish that when they get a MSTied movie actor they’d ask them about ALL the mst movies they were in- for example, Greydon Clark talked about FINAL JUSTICE but not ANGEL’S REVENGE, Bill McKinney talked about MASTER NINJA but not FINAL JUSTICE…

Oh, and I hope when they do the GAMERA box set they include some footage from the original KTMA Gamera episodes (maybe a featurette with clips & interviews with Joel, Trace, and Josh called ‘MST3k vs. Gamera: Round One’
    ?)
Episodes I most would like on DVD:
-All of the Bert I. Gordon movies.
-201 Rocketship XM (just for historical purposes)
    -306 Time of the Apes
    -307 Daddy-O
    -310 Fugitive Alien
-318 Star Force: Fugitive Alien II
    -412 Hercules Against the Moonmen
-416 Fire Maidens of Outer Space (With Timmy figure, please!)
    -508 Operation Double 007
    -610 The Violent Years
-611 The Last of the Wild Horses (a very important episode and I can’t imagine the rights to the movie would be too expensive)
    -614 San Francisco International
-624 Samson vs. the Vampire Women
-704 The Incredible Melting Man (one of my favorite eps ever and I love the Hollywood-skewering host segments)
    -806 The Undead
    -814 Riding With Death
    -903 Puma-Man
-913 The Quest of the Delta Knights (Great episode plus the novelty of Pearl in the theater)
    -1013 Diabolik

without a doubt Daddy-O needs to be released. We’re at 20 volumes and this classic episode (one of the all time greats) hasn’t seen the light of mass retail COME ON!!!! The Violent Years would be excellent (classic Ed Wood fair, and fights with The Sinister Urge as my favorite of his they did), DeathStalker: arguably the greatest episode in a Season of nothing but stellar episodes. But aside from Daddy-O the one they really need to get out there: OUTLAW!!! Big buttery slabs of Fabio, the last Invention Exchange, Cabot (ad nauseum), Jack Palance, a female American Gladiator, all the greats and the good. Let’s get this out people. Hail and scream it from the mountaintops. CABOT!!!CABOT!!!! CABOT!!!!!

I’d most like to see “Daddy-O” released on a future set.
As far as special features go, it’s the main reason I pick up the sets. Any and all interviews/intros/convention footage should continue. For a future special feature, I’d like to see more Turkey Day footage.
And subtitles would be a welcome inclusion. The recent release of “MST3K: The Movie” on dvd has subtitles, and the way they did them is a good example.

There has been a lot of love in this thread for the shorts discs that Rhino did. Personally I’d like to see an invention exchange disc. That segment had a lot of gold over the years and I could stand to watch those back to back.

Otherwise these have been mentinoed before so just consider my doing it again as extra votes:
    Promos and bumpers!
Turn down your lights (where applicable)
Episode numbers (Again it doesn’t have to be big, just somewhere on the disc. For those of us who organize our shelves by episode number this would be a major convience.)

I’m really happy with Shout’s progress on their releases in general. I’ll be perfectly honest, towards the end I got really bitter at Rhino about the sets (volume 9, original volume 10, see below) that I missed out on because they got pulled so quickly. As long as Shout keeps releasing, I’ll keep buying.

I know this idea isn’t popular amongst the haves, but as a have-not I’d really like to see a re-release of Women of the Prehistoric Planet, Wild Rebels, Sinister Urge, and Godzilla VS Megalon. It won’t stop those mooks on eBay from trying to sell their original volume 9 and 10 sets for hundreds of dollars a pop (not unlike the people who are still trying to get a hundred bucks for their 1st print non-anamorphic release of The Movie), but at least I won’t have to covet them anymore.

  9. Re: The Dead Talk Back glitches

I had a pretty fancy VCR back in the day when this episode aired and recorded it and later transferred it to dvd. The picture is pretty darned good for a dub, which is why I didn’t snatch up the Rhino set when it came out. But I have seen screenshots of the glitches online and I can state with some certainty that the glitches do not exist in my dub.

Josh #158> The haves (like me) won’t care either way so long as re-releases are singles. Shout to their credit (as it is costing them potential sales) by doing Beggining of the End and Incredible Strange Creatures… as singles. If they only cared about the bottom line they wouldn’t have done that. Those who need them can buy them as oppossed to sticking them in a new box set or even doing them as singles but with new extras which “force” the haves into buying them a second time. As a “have” I wouldn’t even mind if they did a box set of all re-releases. Just don’t make be re-buy something.

If the issue is audio glitches, those may be on the master. The audio does flub a little at a couple points during the movie. But how many of these old movies do not have occasional audio flubs?

Late to the party, but I’ve enjoyed that nearly every Shout! disc has some kind of extra feature on it. Even when the extra covers a subject that I don’t entirely care about, I appreciate that they went to the trouble to do it.

Minor, nit-picky point directed at Shout!: The opening menu animations are fun to watch, but please remember that Crow has legs. I know they don’t exist on your computer model, and that’s fine (I don’t care if I see them, and I know they’re more work to animate), but it’s weird to watch Crow glide around the screen like he’s using Tom’s hoverskirt.

I would like the 4 disc sets to stop and see either single disc releases or 2 disc releases like Rhino’s The Essentials. It seems that with all of these 4 disc sets, for me only one of the episodes is a must have, two are OK, and the last I don’t care so much about so I haven’t bought any of them. The Essentials, on the other hand, was a must buy as it had two must have episodes. I have all the episodes from old tapes in varying quality and would pay to upgrade particular episodes but I want to be able to choose those episodes.

    @ Gorn Captain,

A full Criterion treatment of the movie would be fantastic. Somehow I imagine the folks at the Criterion Collection probably despise our little cow-town puppet show, though. They’d probably do a 2-disc This Island Earth Blu-Ray extravaganza and only derisively mention MST3k as a footnote in the included 30-page booklet.

#163 Zee> That is a great idea!! I typically thoroughly enjoy commentary tracks. It never occurred to me to do it for host segments but there has to be stories to tell. The only downside is that given the short nature of the typical host segment the stories may be longer than the segment. So how do you tell them?

I always loved the Rhino releases. I felt like they kind of always got a bum rap. That said, I prefer the way Shout! handles the releases. From the packaging, menus, extras; there just seems to be more of an effort to ‘get it right’. I *LOVE* the boxes from Shout! and the Roman numerals were an inspired idea to set themselves apart from the Rhino sets.

One consistent name I have always heard mentioned with Rhino (at least in the DVD era) and Shout! is Jordan Fields. The guy deserves and immense amount of kudos for pulling the releases together. Brian Ward is the public face of all of the Shout! releases but the fact that Jordan Fields ventured to Shout! and is in charge of MST3K makes me rest easy.

The extras thus far have been really good on most of the Shout! releases. Some things I would really love to see on future releases are as follows…

    – Bloopers (Episode specific)
    – Promos (Filmed for CC & SciFi)
    – Turkey Day Bumpers (1992-1996)
    – This is MST3K (Comedy Central Documentary, 1992)
    – Making of MST3K (SciFi Documentary, 1996)

I made a wishlist that I posted at Shout! in 2008 of 15 Episodes that I wanted most to see. Of those 15, 9 will have been released once XXI comes out. Of the remaining from that list there is one that still would make me most happy:

309 – The Amazing Colossal Man

The one and only thing I think Rhino did better than Shout was that they included the episode numbers in the episode descriptions on the packaging, which is incredibly helpful. I’m someone who has been watching the show for twenty years, owns every official DVD release, and has every other unreleased episode on DVD as well, but you know I don’t have every single episodes number and specific place in the series memorized. Sometimes I may feel like checking out an episode that I don’t watch very often, but also want to watch one from a specific era (do I want to watch an early Joel, a late Joel, a Comedy Central Mike, a Sci-Fi Mike, etc.) and it’s nice to just have the simple and easily provided info right there on the box.

Also the last three or four months I’ve been going through and watching the entire series in order from the start, and having the episode numbers right there on the Rhino packaging has been very helpful in that. It’s a very simple thing that I’m pretty surprised Shout hasn’t done.

Over all Rhino did a lot of things right, and Shout has continued doing those things right as well as improving on a lot of other things. I don’t mind the generic slipcase covers, and I like that they’ve kept the numbering system going from the Rhino sets (I also have no problem reading the Roman numerals. I guess I paid attention in the fourth grade after all). I actually prefer Shouts standardized cover design to the generic and meaningless (and usually poorly done) designs Rhino used to come up with that often had nothing at all to do with Mystery Science Theater 3000.

If a full recording was ever made, it would be great to see the LIVE shows that were done. That would be an AWESOME extra!

As a fellow MSTie, and an active consumer of the DVD sets (both Rhino and Shout!), I think that the current numeral system works fine. I want to make sure that I don’t accidently re-buy the same episode(s), simply because it was a single-disc, then included in a set, then another differently named/themed set, or vice-versa. The fact that the majority of them have been released in packs of 4 or so is GREAT. Keep ’em comin’!!!

All extras (docs, TV specials, stage shows, collectable figurines, etc.) are all more than welcome. Pretty much, I think every MSTie basically wants these 3 things in an MST3K DVD:

    1. The best quality in master-to-DVD tranfer possible.
    2. As many extras and bonuses as humanly (or robotically) possible.

    And, of course:

    3. ALL OF THE EPISODES. PERIOD.

Come what may, I have absolutely NO plan to stop collecting these, EVER. I love this show, and I am in full support of whatever preserves it for years to come.

@Sharktopus, why are you talking about Criterion in that way as if they are snobs? Look at their catalog and you’ll see that they have a long history of releasing any and all kinds of films and seem to be incredibly open minded in their selections. I think it’s pretty obvious that the many of the MST3000 crew were huge film nuts themselves, and they even made many references to a lot of films that Criterion has actually released. There is no reason to think that Mystery Science Theater 3000 wouldn’t have a lot of appeal to the people at Criterion, and I’d actually go so far as to say that I would not have been surprised at all if Criterion announced they were releasing Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie. Delighted and happy, but not surprised that it was the kind of film they would want to put out. In fact it is right up their alley. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than a few MST3000 fans on the Criterion staff. Not everyone who appreciates the kinds of films Criterion releases ONLY appreciates those kinds of films. I own probably a couple dozen Criterion DVDs and if I could afford it I would own almost every one they’ve ever released, yet I’m just as likely to pop in my Criterion DVD of “The 400 Blows” or “Masculin Feminin” as I am to pop in a Jackie Chan action movie or an episode of MST3000. I’ve found that more often than not the most serious film fans are way more open minded and broad in their love of all kinds of film than the “average” person is, and I think the perfect example of this is just how incredibly diverse the Criterion catalog actually is.

I would love to see more themed sets like the (fingers crossed) upcoming Gamera collection. Rights issue would make Godzilla hard to do, but you could do a cool sets on biker flicks, Cold War paranoia movies, Beverly Garland films, dark juvenile delinquent cautionary tales.* I tend to watch in themed bundles anyway, which really emphasizes the stories behind these films — how and why they were made, presented, viewed, and ultimately ridiculed.

My dream DVD would be Daddy-O with a feature-length documentary on Dick Contino (including an interview with James Ellroy).

    * That might be a good thread for the future… create your own themed DVD set.

I enjoy Criterion as well, and have bought a number of their DVDs. Even though they tend to be overpriced and often packed full of painfully dull bonus features, you can never beat their attention to detail and quality.

That said, there is a virulent streak of MST3k-hate that runs through the film scholar community, and I can’t help but assume there are a few haters at Criterion. But then, they have given the full Criterion Collection treatment to two Michael Bay movies and Robocop, so I really shouldn’t be surprised by anything they do anymore.

For me this one is a tie between Time of the Apes and Daddy-O. Two big thumbs up from me to Shout for not screwing anything up (like Rhino did with Killer Shrews) and most of all for getting the rights to the Gamera films!

I’d like to see the KTMA episodes coming out, even if only one a year to start. For some of them the rights can’t be that hard to get. I know they aren’t a fan of them but most of the long time MST3K fans I’m sure would love to get these. Especially the ones that haven’t been available at all.

Yeah, pretty much anything that comes out is gravy. I’d like to see The Mole People. For some reason, I love that one.
“Is the first stage of grief pure, unbridled joy?” I’ve used that so often.

“If we each move one rock per day…” always pops into my mind when someone at a staff meeting wants everything we go over broken down and spoon fed to them.

But whatever Shout! can get, I’m happy.

For extras, I’d like to see more promos, bumpers and commercials.

I’d also like to see the Best Brains video releases {Tom Servo host segments, Play MSTie for Me…} get re-released.

Also, on a side note, when is that Gamera set supposed to come out??

The 3 I most want on DVD:

    Puma Man
    Time of the Apes
    Quest of the Delta Knights

I loved the actual DVD art on the Rhinos, very creative. Shout factory is pretty boring for DVD artwork. The extras are lighyears better on Shout than Rhino. Shout DVD menus are way better than Rhino. I am just really glad that both companies decided to bring these to DVD.

Well, not that anyone will be still checking this thread at this point, but reading through every entry and the frequent mentions of episode numbering on the packaging and what not, I had an idea to throw out:

As an extra on one (or more) of the discs in a set (and staying true to the spirit of the thread, i.e. no obstacles to it being done), would anyone else be interested in seeing, season by season, a gathering together of The Amazing Colossal Episode Guide entry, Daddy-O’s Drive-In Dirt entries, and Sampo’s episode descriptions/recollections, for each episode?

For example, for Season One you would click on Episode 101, “The Crawling Hand”, and scroll down the stuff mentioned above, all in one place? I don’t know, just an idea- I enjoy reading all that information periodically, and doing that would just make it a little easier to do all in one shot.

If this idea has previously appeared in another thread or forum, my apologies.

    My big 4:

    Puma Man
    Gorgo
    Magic Sword
    Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

Eh, let’s throw Neptune Men in there too as we always need more Hitler building blowing up.

It is a minor point but I do appreciate the slim cases Shout uses. About once a month, I have a MST3K movie night with a couple friends and it makes it easier for me just to bring two or three episodes rather than hauling around two entire sets for the two shows we plan to watch. Yes, I could transfer the Rhino DVDs to carrying cases, but it is just easier to already have everything in its proper place.

    I would love to see:
Rocketship XM (“Houston, Lloyd’s making moves on the babe.”)
Horror of Party Beach (“Anyone want a hotdog?”)
    Riding with Death (“Turkey”)

-and so many more! But those spring to mind first. Any and all that you can put out are so much appreciated by my family. My 16 year old son watches them and loves them. He doesn’t get many of the jokes but he laughs all the same. It also gives us an opportunity to bond over old favorites like Sanford and Son (he now understands “I’m coming, Elizabeth!”) Goofy, I know, but that’s why we love MST3K. Any extras you want to put on there are fine with me, there are already a lot of good ideas on this board. Thanks for asking, by the way, which movies we’d like to see put out there.

I would agree with alot of the other people on the episode numbers being mentioned on the dvd set somewhere. I also think that the slim cases are much better than the fold out cases. As for me i prefer a Mike J. Nelson set.

    Track of the Moon Beast
    It Lives by Night
    Diabolik
    Return of the Creature

I hate the Shout! posters, and don’t really care for the figurines, but like or love everything else that Shout! does regarding MST3K. The slimcases are especially great; when I want to take over an episode to a friend’s house for crowd viewing, I don’t have to drag along the other unwanted eps. Rhino’s best contributions were clearly the Shorts compilations and MST3K Jukeboxes, but they deserve an ovation for just releasing the eps at all.

My dream box set right now would consist of Agent for HARM (my second favorite ep), Samson vs the Vampire Women, The Day the Earth Froze, and Deathstalker.
