Did they ever say that they were going to release key episodes for the 20th anniversary set? I think what happened is they couldn’t call it Volume 13 and therefore had to come up with another name for the set and since this year is the 20th anniversary, it was convenient to call it such. I’m curious as to what future sets will be officially named.. 21st Anniversary collection? The Hamdinger collection? The Absurd Hero collection?

The higher price is likely due to the inclusion of First Spaceship on Venus and the fancy packaging. I would expect further releases to be slightly cheaper, unless they go all out.

I really don’t understand all the disquiet over this release.

First of all, it’s was doubtful from the first that all of the “key” episodes would be in one set. I’m sure SF is familiar with the show-biz addage “Always leave them wanting more,” and they weren’t about to shoot their clip on one set. They’re going to spread things out so that we’ll keep coming back.

Second, I’m looking forward to the coverage of the reunion panel. I couldn’t make it to this one, and I have yet to locate any tape of the last I one they did in NYC back in June of 2001 (though at least I did attend that one). That alone would make this a good buy.

And third, I don’t understand the disparaging of “First Spaceship on Venus”. The riffing is good, the movie has a wonderfully goofy design to it (though lack of letterboxing damages the visuals), and it has two classic host segnents (“Oh, Sweet Mother of Mine” and Klack Foods). Besides, my copy is incomplete and I’ve been relying on YouTube for the missing part.

Well, that’s my take on it, anyway. I’ll certainly be picking it up.

Actually, Pearl first appearance was in show 607 “Bloodlust” (released on VHS, but not on DVD, so far as I know). You also missed show 113 “Black Scorpion” (last in-person appearance of Larry Ehrhardt).

The unabeefer in 133 said “@ Happy (#126… doesn’t seem so happy to me)

I started watching the show just before season 2, back when ComCen was The Comedy Channel (and actually played things like Alien From LA UNriffed)… While I love Joel and the “Joel-Era”, I will admit that yes, I do prefer Mike, but ONLY because it’s more my style of humour. It’s not because I am young (which I am not), and it’s not because I haven’t seen Joel (which I have), and it’s not because I forgot how funny Joel is (which I haven’t, and he is)…
But you consistantly lump “Mike” into “SciFi”… there were about as many episodes with Mike on ComCen as there were on SciFi. I think I may be alone in loving the Mike/ComCen era best, but that doesn’t mean I even remotely dislike Joel or even the later SciFi stuff.
Also, why only focus on the amount of Mike and Joel episodes?? There are other people on the show. Trace as Dr. F/Crow, Bill as Crow/Observer, Josh as Tom/Dr E, Frank as Frank, Mary Jo as Pearl (both season 7 AND SciFi), Kevin as Tom/Bobo… hell, the voices of Gypsy and Magic Voice were done by different people in different eras, and ya know what…
They didn’t all change at the same time. By simply focusing on Joel/Mike, you really are excluding EVERYONE else that rotated characters on the show.
Try finding only 4 episodes that you consider “key” that will correctly have at least one of EVERYBODY in their respective roles. That should keep you busy.
On a note of agreement, I would actually LOVE to see more Joel episodes… just stop claiming that all the Mike fans haven’t seen any, or simply don’t like, the Joel-Era episodes. I love them ALL.
    IN RESPONSE :
Joel and Mike are the hosts, that is how I look at it, perhaps even more than just me..sets consist of 2 Joels and 2 Mikes, thats how we see it. I dont lump Mike into scifi. When I mean Mike, I mean just Mike &/or scifi – I know Mike did CC eps. There are key episodes with ‘the supporting cast’ with both Joel and Mike as hosts
    101 has Joel,Trace,Josh
    201 has Joel , Frank,Trace,Kevin
512/513 -released has the Joel-Mike transition
    624 – Frank leaves
701 -Pearl’s debut along with Mike and Trace
706- last CC with the same crew
801 -Mike,Kevin as Bobo, and in a few more eps Brain Guy debuts
1001 – Joel & Frank return for an episode
    1013 the end
I dont think magic voice changes count as key & Jim stopped Gypsy, I didnt even notice it for the longest time..
So you see there is a key episode with everyone you mentioned, and depending on rights, where most of these appear to be public domain or likely according to Travis.
So put that in your pipe and smoke it and that line about doesnt look so happy..oh yuk yuk what an original line..
And as for people whining and complaining, I beg to differ, we are aimply stating that these episodes while overall is a good set, does NOT exemplify what a 20th Anniversary overhyped set one would think or associate with the show , except for Laserblast. When Laserblast was the big rumor a lot of said, “oh theyre getting the key episodes(or wishing) & we had every right to be. Instead of 101 or 201 we get 211 which the MST3K doesnt even like!
We get to scifi shows , why 1004 over 1001, could it be rights issues ?
Underwhelmed is a good word. Its not whining, its more of an observation that this set isnt really what a 20th anniversary set is – 3 random episodes. That is how I and others feel
    Deal with it..

Absolutely not sir, in my house it well established that the favorite era is “Mike and the Mads” as we call it. I definitely love Joel’s work and I don’t think any of these releases will ever match the anticipation of going to back home on break from college and watching all the new eps my mom was kind enough to tape for me, Having said that though, Mike is more to my taste and I love Bill’s take on Crow. Not everyone who prefers the later episodes is young or ignorant of Joel. He’s getting my money for CT now so we can have both concurrently with Mike doing Rifftrax.

Cant we all just get along?

To the person who wanted all episodes to be commercially released (What i’m not gonna go back and look up your name)Theres this one movie they did you may have heard of it is called space travelers. Not only is it an unpopular episode among fans, but is also (arguably) one of the best sci fi movies ever, and its owned by sony.

In other words NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.

Bloodlust has been released on DVD. It was in Rhino volume 1. And I don’t think that episode should count as Pearls first appearance because she is never referred to as “Pearl”. Only as Dr. Forrester’s Mother.

    to Unabeefer and robwillsey:

Count me in the club that prefers cc-era Mike & the Mads over any other era of MST3K. I do prefer Joel as a host to Mike, but the show was never better than it was when Mike and Trace and Kevin and Frank were rolling from 519-624.

Also suprised to see mostly disdain for First Spaceship on Venus. Sure it’s not one of Joel’s best, but any clean commercial DVD copy of an early season ep is an occasion for celebration. I mean Werewolf is a better episode, but pristine fan copies are easily available.

And as trivial as it may be, I do think that if Shout hadn’t chosen to call this one the “20th Anniversary Set”, I wouldn’t probably be at all disappointed in the episode selection. Don’t act like it’s not just the 13th MST3K boxset, cause other than the extra’s, it’s not any better than the average Rhino set. Esp. when they’re charging more than Rhino for the sets. If getting 211 on their was the cause for the higher price, then that’s a serious miscalculation on Shout’s part. I don’t think even the biggest Joel fans were clammoring for that one to be released.

Now THAT’S how you do a 3 Mike/1 Joel box set release. 2 very strong Mike eps, 1 Joel classic (and fairly landmark due to the rights issues that kept it off the air for most of the CC run), and 1 Mike filler ep.

I think that the anti-complainer crowd is the one overreacting and putting words in peoples mouths. I don’t recall anyone saying that they weren’t going to buy it because of the episode selection. Everyone is going to buy it just as they would have bought it if it was being called “Volume 13” and released by Rhino, because it’s great to get any new DVDs. But that doesn’t change the fact that Shout Factory has been treating this as a big deal, and teasing about how it was going to be bigger and better than what we’ve gotten in the past from Rhino. And then they announce a set that is really no different from one that you could expect coming from Rhino as “Volume 13”. I wasn’t disappointed by the episode selection as I will be happy to have all four of the episodes. I was just confused as to why they though this was a good set of episodes to put in the “Special 20th Anniversary Collection”. Remember that it was Shout Factory that portrayed the set as something big and special. You can’t blame people for being confused as to why the thing they’ve been told will be so special seems to be just another set of random episodes like those we’ve gotten before. The expectations for something special that people have had weren’t irrational, they were based on what Shout Factory was saying.

As far as I can see this set will fit along nicely with the other 12 box sets from Rhino. I’m greatly looking forward to it.

That said, I find the quotes that Crash Corrigan posted in #107 above to be really bizarre.

“Says he owns all the Rhino sets and is disappointed with them”

“as far as we’re concerned, it will be the first set done right”

Why the shots at Rhino out of nowhere? Were other fans “disappointed” by the Rhino sets (I wasn’t and I don’t follow the fandom closely enough to know if that’s a popular sentiment)? What really makes this 13th set so much different that it’ll be “the first set done right”?

I’m looking forward to getting four more episodes on DVD and I’m pre-ordering the set. I just find some of those communications from the spokesman to be odd…

I, too, am happy with whatever episodes get released, ’cause eventually, I’d like to have every (possible) one. I think you kind of have to mix the good episodes with the not-as-good episodes in yer boxed sets. If every boxed set coming out has amazing, ground breaking or classic episodes, what will the boxed sets look like 5 or 6 years down the road?

Woulda been nice to have the 10th anniversary episode (Soultaker) here, though.

Here’s hoping maybe the Oscar specials they did are obtainable for future sets.

    Okay, cards on the table.

#169 seems to sum up the problem: ‘I was just confused as to why they though this was a good set of episodes to put in the “Special 20th Anniversary Collection”.’

As I understand it, the “Special” in the collection title refers to the packaging and extras, the “20th Anniversary” refers to the obvious, and the episode selection is based primarily on the availability of rights.

But in the interest of fairness, I put it to anyone posting here: List ONE unreleased episode which Shout! Factory CAN LEGALLY DISTRIBUTE which would have been a better choice. Please provide proof that SF does indeed have the right to distribute the movie in the episode.

For what it’s worth, I love both Joel and Mike. I love both Trace and Bill. The only character on the show that I actively dislike is Pearl as I feel she was the antithesis of MST3K’s mood/personality.

While I like every episode on this set and will definitely be buying it, I’m baffled by the non-Laserblast choices.

Venus is a 2-star episode. And it really is ridiculous to have 1 Joel episode on the 20th anniversary set, particularly when he’s never been more available for press and promotion for all things MST-related.

Laserblast makes perfect sense as it’s clearly a landmark episode: last CC and Dr. F. show.

    Werewolf is hilarious.

Future War is another OK, 2-2.5 star episode.

It just seems so obvious that the right mix should be 2 Joels, 1 CC Mike and 1 Sci-Fi Mike…but, maybe I’m being ridiculous.

Regardless, I will buy this set along with every other set released in the future.

It’s the best show of all time and we’re nitpicking. But, I think that’s OK.

Future Wars opens with this absolutely fabulous line by a former street walker turned nun. “Four days ago a fire fell from the sky, and it brought a man who would change my life for ever, but also came a pack of dinosaur-like creatures in various ages shapes, sizes, and it’s masters. For all the questions I had about the heavens, all it brought was hell on earth.” Later the same bewildered nun says, “How does an alien bred human know quotes from the bible?” I love this movie.

  27. “Please provide proof that SF does indeed have the right to distribute the movie in the episode.”

It’s pretty silly to suggest that anyone need provide “proof” of this — no one other than SF has proof (and, besides, they wouldn’t have “proof” unless they were actually going to release the movies). The whole idea of Rhino soliciting advice about what to release was to then see if they could get rights (and even that landscape changes constantly).

It’s a good question to ask those who are critical of this release what they’d rather see, and most have indeed offered other suggestions. But I still say this is a very poor choice for a set labeled “20Th Anniversary” which is very likely to attract folks who have never bought any set before.

I’m happy for any releases and will buy them all — but a more even handed mix here would have been much much better for everyone concerned. But sales will tell the tale.

    The TRUE storyline essentials:

101 – The Crawling Eye (First CC/First Joel, Trace, Josh ep.)
104 – Women of the Prehistoric Planet (This, not 113, is Josh’s last ep. – RELEASED)
    201 – Rocketship X-M (Kevin and Frank’s first ep.)
    512 – Mitchell (Joel’s last ep. – RELEASED)
    513 – The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (Mike’s first ep. – RELEASED)
624 – Samson vs. the Vampire Women (Frank’s last ep.)
    706 – Laserblast (Last CC/Last Trace ep. – RELEASED)
801 – Revenge of the Creature (First SF/First Bill ep.)
1001 – Soultaker (Return of Joel, Frank ep.)
1013 – Diabolik (Last for all)

Mary Jo’s beginning is tricky to pinpoint.

That’s 10 “key” episodes, three of which had been released, with “Laserblast” making it four. Of the other six, only two are listed by travis as likely/possible, those being 624 and 1001. I think we all knew that 801 and 1013 were long shots.

What that leaves for this set would be:

    624
    706
    1001
Then a toss up between 101/201

Either way, that set would be a very poor representation of the shows history.

I have loved the show since I first saw “The Crawling Hand”, am partial to the Joel eps, and am thrilled when we get any MST3K product, period. I love Mike AND Joel, but Joel was my first…so to speak.

Having said that, I think I just figured out why I prefer Joel’s eps, followed by Mike and the Mads, as someone above put it (Mike @ CC)…it’s Trace! I like the Sci-Fi ones fine, but there’s something about Trace as Crow and, of course, Dr. F, that I adore. Bill’s great, Mary Jo is a riot, Kevin is awesome, but dammit, I LOVE Trace. And his on-screen chemistry with Frank was wonderful to behold. Maybe being a chick has something to do with this, I dunno. Funny, funny dude.

Oh, well. I am psyched about the new set, lack of Joel and Trace notwithstanding (I know, 2 w/Trace, but still…)

    @Mike (#177)
Thank you for proving my point. All of the great ideas of the “definitive” episodes are useless if the rights aren’t available, which is why I asked. Quite frankly, given the way MST3k treats movies (not to say that they don’t deserve it…), it’s almost a miracle that any have been released.

As for appropriateness to a 20th Anniversary set, that first presumes that there is a choice, and second that the set will only be distinguished by the selection of episodes. But remember that “20th Anniversary” means “20 years” not “representative of the history” or “fan’s favorites”. It would be wonderful if it were possible, but all of the complaining posts have not even acknowledged the possibility that SF may not have been able to get rights to any other episodes anyway.

I do enjoy reading others’ list of their favorites or what they expected. It’s fun to think “what if”. Heck, when I first heard that they were going to do a special edition, my first reaction was “what if they somehow got the rights to some Sandy Frank movies…”

What bothers me is that some people here are implying that SF picked these episodes above others — hence assuming that SF had been able to obtain rights to better choices. I’m betting that’s not the case.

The most ironic part in my mind is that each poster has their own opinions about which episodes belong/don’t belong in this set. If you add them all up, all 4 episodes do pretty well…

wow….quite a bit of pointless back and forth.

My humble opinion, for what its worth:

I quote the words of this site’s own Sampo in reference to quality of the episodes listed in the new Shout Factory set: ” For every MSTie least favorite episode, that episode is another’s favorite of all time.” Personally, i loved Future War, as its one of my top 10 best. And First spaceship of Venus….eh…not especially exciting, but there is always a weak episode in every set. At least it wasn’t Red Zone Cuba as a single disc, which, to me is one of the most boring movies, and quite a chore of an episode to get through. I’ll agree that the choice of episodes doesn’t constitute a 20th anniversary set, but what would? I think that the reunion reel is the real sweetener, which i think, to me, is worth putting in a weak episode(211).

But that’s just the thoughts of one humble MSTie, take them as you will….

Of these four, my favorite is First Spaceship on Venus, followed by Laserblast. Werewolf and Future War are both hard for me to get through, mostly because the movies are so dreary and boring in comparison to the first two.

As long as all the episodes are eventually released (or as many as possible, anyway), I don’t much care in which order they come. I just hope the over-emphasis on the Sci-Fi era episodes by so many people doesn’t prevent the earlier episodes from being released eventually.

  45. Cornjob says:

I know there are often problems getting rights to episodes, but that is usually only a matter of money. There are only a certain number of episodes that are off limits for any other reason. Many of the episodes seen as beyond reach could be had if they were willing to throw enough money into getting them. Of course no one expects them to do that for every release, but would it have killed them to put a little more money into it just once? To make the “20th Anniversary Collection” they were promoting truly special and worthy of the name?

If Shout Factory announced this set as “Our first MST3K release featuring special 20th anniversary gifts and extras!” I don’t think anyone would have had any problems with the episode list.

My first impression with SF’s “promise” to make this first release “bigger and better” than anything Rhino every put out, was that they were getting themselves in over their heads. Well, after this first stab at pleasing MST3K fan-dom, I’m being proven right.

    First, the good:

    1) It’s four more episodes on DVD! (And four fewer that I have to worry about tape quality.)
    2) A new direction in terms of extras. (Would Rhino even consider adding a Crow figure?)
    3) Metallic outer packaging is an intriguing change from Rhino’s glossy, easily fraying outer box shell.

    The not-so-good:

    1) Episode choices left much to be desired. Where Rhino generally had a decent balance of episodes (half Joel/half Mike, and/or half CC/half SciFi), these choices lean heavily towards the Mike camp. Certainly nothing against Mike, but it was many of the Joel eps that got me hooked to the show, and ones I really want seen going to DVD first.
    2) SF let this announcement get overhyped. Marketing this as a “20th Anniversary Edition” was a horrible idea, since such a tag implies that this will include episodes many fans consider “unusual”. The reps at Shout! should have stated that because they were still new to the MST market, that the episodes included MAY not be what people were expecting. Furthermore, the fact that two episodes leaked were refused by a Shout! rep, then later confirmed that they were, doesn’t look good on their part.

Granted, this is a small victory for Shout! Most of the people on this post (myself included) will probably get the box set, and are grateful that the company is at least making efforts to producing a better product than Rhino. The proof in the pudding, for me, will come in the second set produced: release date, episode & extras content, packaging etc. should give fans a better indication of seriously they take this.

Most of the time, when I see an episode list or when someone mentions the title of any specific episode, I don’t even stop and think about if it’s a Mike or a Joel episode. I simply read the title and laugh and think “Oh god, it’s that d*mn movie about the women wrestlers…” and laugh for about an hour or more before even trying to figure out who wore a jumpsuit.

I’ll laugh about host segments and songs, but more often than not, it doesn’t make a difference in the least which guy sat with robots. If the movie sucks to high hell, and the jokes were hillarious, it’s a great time and I will giggle uncontrollably just from reading the title.

That’s pretty much what happened to me with this list.

I love “First Spaceship On Venus” and always took the episode guide comments to imply that it was just a horribly painful MOVIE, not necessarily that they hated the EPISODE. Usually, the worse the movie, the better the episode.

I read the title “Future War” and thought “Wait, is that the nun and the dinosaurs?! I hate that movie!! YES!!!” It’s by far not my favourite episode, but the movie blows chunks, and that implies the episode is good.

“Laserblast” … I just remember the movie starting with a “ROXY?!?” throwback to “Eegah!” Can’t go wrong there.

…and I REALLY have NO recollection of “Werewolf”… but I have seen it near the top of the most requested lists.

I think this is a perfect collection… but then again, I love bad movies.

Making a good four disc set is as elusive as I am.

I agree that Soultaker would have been a great episode for this set.

I think what happened there was that Werewolf was already outed, and it contravenes human rights laws to distribute two Joe Estevez movies in the same package.

You don’t recall Werewolf? Then you’re in for a treat. It is a very funny episode. I’ve been wanting this one to come out on dvd for a long tome.
