Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Desert Island Episode

So, you’re off to a desert island. It’s not some Tom-Hanks-hollering-at-a-coconut-head situation here. You’ll have a DVD player and electricity. But out of your complete collection of every MST3K episode (let’s assume you have one), you can only bring one.

What would it be? It would not only have to be a great episode but it would have to be one that would be good on repeat viewings.

Mine may surprise you: It’s episode 610- THE VIOLENT YEARS
(with short: “YOUNG MAN’S FANCY”)

To me, it just has everything an MST3K episode should have. Every single host segment is great (though the “Star is Born” thing Tom does is probably the least funny), the short is weird, the movie was written by Ed Wood and features the classic “lady violating the poor defenseless guy” scene, and the riffing is top-notch throughout. They are just firing on all cylinders.

That’s mine. What’s yours?

This topic is certain to demonstrate the truth of what has come to be known as “Sampo’s Theorem” which states: “For every MSTie who believes a given episode is the worst thing they ever did, there is another who believes it is their finest hour.”

Oh, and I will allow honorable mentions, but only one. Mine would be episode 416- FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE.

I’m always having to defend this with my friends, but my favorite one, and therefore the one I would bring, is “Horror Of Party Beach”. I mean, you’ve got great running gags; horrible soundtrack (movie composition), and yet, the band ‘The Del-Aires’ is listenable (actually likeable); The monster is ridiculous-looking–and if it weren’t for the fact that it’s early right now and people around me are [ticking] me the [heck] off right now, I could think of another 80 or so things i like about the movie…

  4. K10 – Cosmic Princess. I’d be lost without it.

As a backup: 613 – The Sinister Urge w/ Keeping Clean and Neat.

The one I watch most often, and thus my desert island choice, is The Dead Talk Back ( as you might guess from my handle ).

It’s a sweet spot for me… goofy movie trying hard but failing, great riffs, the grateful dead host segment guitar etc. The short ( Selling Wizard ) is also a pleasure ( You, Minut Bol!).

And it contains my single favorite riff, even now I am giggling quietly to myself just thinking about it.

to quote Churchill : Jim Kelly is a fine athlete and a great patriot, but he will neva, neva, wear a Superbowl ring.

    Mine would be:
“The Day the Earth Froze” with “Jack Frost” as honorable mention. My wife and I watch them as a “Russo-Finnish” double feature (hint, hint Shout! Factory… hint, hint), about once every couple of months, just watch’em yesterday as a matter-of-fact.

Favorite “mildy-dirty” riff from Day the Earth Froze: as the witch is walking off screen J&TB’s are making it sound as if our heros are flirting with her and one says: “Hey, that is cold!”

    Gets me every time!!

Another vote here for 422 – The Day The Earth Froze.

Runner up would be 315 – Teenage Caveman, partly because it has 2 great shorts, “Aquatic Wizards” and “Catching Trouble”.

    @Rhindle the Red……..

going old school! K-10 Cosmic Princess!
My favorite KTMA is K-12 Fugitive Alien. If anybody is wondering why most MISTIES ( and MST3K alum’s ) say that KTMA’s are terrible we mean it. Because comparing a KTMA ep. to an episode from season 2 through 10 is like comparing a fine filet of steak to dog doo doo ( this has nothing to do with the deserted isle )

I’d have to go with 317-Viking Women vs. the Sea Serpent, with the great Home Ec short.

For the runner up, I’d take Boggy Creek II. Hard choices…

  11. Nick says:

First off, it’s pretty amazing that out of 120 posts there are almost no two choices alike. That’s a testament to one of the best shows to ever hit the air waves.

Back on topic…yeah, this is a tougie. I’m pretty partial the The Sinister Urge; it’s an Ed Wood flick, a great short (“Why couldn’t Mamie Van Doren star in this?”), and awesome host segments. I watch it quite a bit and it never gets dull. Second place would be Operation Double 007. The “I Know” host segment is probably my favorite of all time.

Without a doubt my fav would have to be Girl in Gold Boots. Just the best riffs… “My shisters a dancer on the shunset shtrip”… “so long, Yakboy!” “I’m an icky elf.” …and of course, the zinger… “Oh god, I wish I had my pretty mind back!”

    First Choice: Cave Dwellers.
“Who is this gentle stranger with pecs like melons and knees of fringe?”

The zippy jingle-esque theme music has embedded itself in my consciousness and will not leave.

It’s scary how I never tire of The Dead Talk Back. That episode speaks to me, somehow.

truxartis and Jeff McM, I thank you for mentioning Bride of the Monster with the brilliant short, Hired: Part I. I do own 95% of the total collection and nothing has beaten that masterpiece. You’re the 2nd and 3rd people I’ve ever heard who mention that as their favorite. It’s the best TV episode of any show ever written for me.

If I could only watch one MST episode it would be 422 The Day the Earth Froze. Everything about that episode just works; the material, jokes, skits. Very funny stuff.

    Here’s my top 10

    1. Day the Earth Froze
    2. Pod People
    3. Cave Dwellers
    4. Human Duplicators
    5. Hercules and the Captive Women
    6. Girls Town
    7. Kitten with a Whip
    8. Eegah
    9. Gamera vs. Zigra
    10. Daddy-O

Hobgoblins would be #1, if they didn’t blow the stinger (it should have been Larraine Newman’s odd little dance when her boyfriend shows up).

I Accuse My Parents was the episode that cemented my fandom, but then Space Mutiny came along.

    So, Space Mutiny.

Unless it’s The Day The Earth Froze.

“Incredible Melting Man” is my #1. Right from the start…”Round guy with surfboard international.” All the way through “Ah-ajka” and winding down with “I’m Ted Nelson…BLAM! BLAM BLAM!” It was perfection.

Gotta also give props to 801-Revenge of the Creature. Clint Eastwood can thank John Agar for showing him how to act. Listen to Agar’s laugh with the monkey…PRICELESS!

I’m diggin’ “Giant Spider Invasion” for two reasons:

As a Wisconsin resident who is actually from Minnesota, I can’t get enough Wisconsonite insults.

    “Woooo Packers!”

The mention of the late, lamented Gobbler is also boss.

Also, the DVD contains a Video Jukebox with several of the Brains hits, giving you a little piece of several other eps. (Especially “The Canada Song”)

  26. I made uh R-ruh! says:

    To Bartcow:

DUDE! I have always felt the same about the stinger for “Hobgoblins”!

It is one of my all-time favorites, one I’ve actually seen without the pain-relieving effects of the guys. That took effort, I assure you.

Their shred on this movie had me laughing until I was weeping and gasping, especially when the band takes the stage at the “strip club.” ICED CHICKEN? KID SNICKERS?

Don’t park in the alley, or you’ll get towedddddd!

FISHPICKER! That’s our one song…g’night, everybody!

I’m laughing already and will be digging this one out of my collection tonight.

I agree with you on what the stinger should have been–either her goofy dance or the scene where Road Rash holds up the “HIT” sign.

  27. Glyn says:

My pick would be “I Accuse My Parents”.
    This episode has everything!
It has action, suspense, intrigue, drunk parents, a cool chick and a loser!
Not to mention the burger guy trying hopelessly to convert our loser hero into a bible thumper!
Besides, I bought all my friends a copy for Christmas, so you know it’s good.
And yes they were all purchased, not burned!
    So there.

I was wondering if someone else would pick ‘Monster-A-Go-Go.’ *waves at Brendon* That is, absolutely, my all-time favorite episode.

Narrator: There is one terrifying word in the world of nuclear physics–
    Tom: “Oops.”

It’s picking an honorable mention that’d be difficult for me. But if I really, really had to choose…I think ‘Werewolf.’

Mike: The Uzbekistani Tracy and Hepburn.

Like said above, its great that almost every post here is different. You’d think it’d be a handful of episodes (Manos again and again) but everyone has their own favorite.

Fugitive Alien 2 is fantastic, I dunno what it is, but its spectacular.

If we’re going to talk about KTMA favorites for some reason their take on Gamera V. Guiron has always tickled me.

I have to go with RIDING WITH DEATH as my top episode…turkeys!

MITCHELL is a close 2nd and my fave ep to show to friends who have never seen the show before.

SIDEHACKERS is #3 because love pads the film.

After watching this show almost every night for the past 15 years, this is tough. However, I’d choose the following shows after watching them over and over and over and over again (sorry Pee Wee): 12 to the Moon, Danger, Death Ray, Starfighters, and Attack of the Blood Beast. I’d also add The Deadly Mantis because I actually like the movie and would want to be able to enjoy it on that level as well. How utilitarian of me!

Except for Mighty Jack, any of the Sandy Frank Films, especially Fugitive Alien (or FA II), I find myself singing “He tried to kill me with a forklift!” all the time…

A close second would have to be The Day the Earth Froze — it’s how I tap into my Scandi-hoovian roots. “She’s Swedish. I’m guessing her eyes are blue.”

  37. Wild Rebel says:

    Wild Rebels

Not just because it’s my favorite but because it was filmed where I grew up. So it would be like having a little bit of home with me.

    Runner up: Godzilla vs. Megalon

Besides the fact that it has one of the best riffs ever: “Yeah, it’s a pity we can’t kill you and get away with it.”

Every time I watch it I can yell out toward Japan….”#@&% you, Toho!!! I’m watching this episode!!!! They’re making fun of your precious overgrown lizard and you can’t stop me!!!! Kiss my a$$!!!”

    hey wild rebel,
i agree with you it (wild rebels) is definitely one of the best. sometimes as i’m walking past my husband i’ll suddenly hear the faint utter of “wild rebels, munchy crunchy rebels”. this especially happens when he’s making himself a bowl of cereal. also, i recently discovered that the singer of the band, the birdwatchers, is my really good friend’s cousin. (the birdwatchers are the band that play in the club where the frat boys get beat up) my friend recently found this out and we were, as you can imagine, stunned. he says at the next family reunion he’s going to stalk him.

how cruel, how very cruel is this ‘choosing’…
I had to go with my first response, which was ‘The Creeping Terror.’ ‘he has a MANIC interest in nature.’ ‘Morey Firestein- kosher game warden!’ ‘bobby???’ ‘SWIM! let the current take you away!’ ‘when a monster loves a car, very much…’ ‘well- if that don’t beat all…’ ‘This is Andy Warhol’s “Driving.”‘
runner-up is ‘Laserblast,’ which I recently saw for the first time. if it is possible to suffer internal organ damage from laughter, this episode caused it. ah, the Seventies, in all their horrid glory! ‘I’ve come to where the flavor is, but nothing’s happening’ ‘their tiny human butt-pods fell off centuries ago!’ ‘I believe this is “Mannix,” ‘ding-dong- dingdong ding dong” ‘you can actually WATCH her losing weight!’ ‘I know what you are thinking. did I fire six gorlocks, or only five?’ I am lucky enough to be seeing many of the episodes for the first time, so I’ll probably have some new choices!

  46. Patricko says:

What can I add to the previous 195? Final sacrifice and Day the Earth Froze rank right up there. Of course such gems as Space Mutiny and Laserblast and Danger! Death Ray all have their attractions.

One special favorite which I didn’t see featured by anyone else – perhaps because the pain was simply too great – comes in three syllables… Fu Man Chu!

Christopher Lee in his worse move role coupled with odd footage from “A Night to Remember” about the Titanic sinking go together to make an oddly compelling and insanely unlit movie favorite… Not that anything could really replace Final Sacrifice!
