Boy, am I ready to re-watch Episode 1101 today. So glad I didn’t jump the gun and click “Buy” yesterday when the episode was available for an almost-Birdemic-caliber price of $999,999.99!
And I have a silly question that’s been bothering me: If Kinga is Dr. Forrester’s daughter, who is her mother? Or was she grown in a lab with Forrester DNA?

I think this might be my all time favorite comment on this site.
But real talk: EricJ is the perfect troll. He probably believes everything he says, while simultaneously knowing that his opinions, and the incredibly obnoxious way they are presented as facts, are frustratingly acidic to anyone here who doesn’t have a hate boner for Mike or the dreaded “millenials”. He can both express his real feelings and bait people into giving him the exact sort of negative attention he craves with little effort. It would be impressive if it wasn’t the mark of a truly pathetic personality.
I am a bit surprised that someone who appears to love Joel so much, and seems to be chomping at the bit to decide if he needs to add another new host to the chip on his shoulder, didn’t bother to donate, or donate enough, so they could see the episodes early. It makes their attempts at “contribution” to this thread all the more grating and pitiful.
I am also unclear, EricJ, on whether you are actually planning to watch the episodes at all given your abject terror at the idea of binge watching, and the fact that Netflix has no protections in place to prevent someone from committing the terrible crime of watching more than one episode a week.

BTW, WIZARDS OF THE LOST KINGDOM was available as a RiffTrax B-movie early last year, but the guys at the site took it off a few days earlier because they claimed there were some “copyright issues”. And since WIZARDS OF THE LOST KINGDOM was a Roger Corman production, and we all know how finicky he is with leasing his copyrights to the MST3K crew, I presumed that was the case. But now that it looks like MST3K is doing it for Season 11 (if that’s what I’m ascertaining here, I didn’t get the VHX download package), it could’ve been because Joel told RiffTrax that they happened to be doing WOTLK for the new season, and RiffTrax took it down themselves so as to avoid overlap. Either way, I bought that RiffTrax the first day it came out, like I’ve done with all my MST3K video products since GODZILLA VS. MEGALON got taken off the shelf, so it’ll be fun to contrast and compare the old MST3K crew’s take on the movie with the new MST3K crew.

I wish everyone involved with the MST3K revival well.
I have to save my limited funds for Rifftrax (which is *not* targeted to twentysomethings).
I’ll watch whatever clips of the reboot I can.
I hope there is some explanation for Crow, Servo, and Gypsy being on the SOL, especially since Gypsy had become a successful businesswoman.
In the meantime, let’s try to get along here.

Can’t wait to get a second crack at that closing theme I love so much, played by a real orchestra?! Yes, I’ve never been so glad to be so wrong.
My next day off this week is tomorrow, so guess I’ll be binging new MST3K! Which is a thing I never thought I’d say since 1999. Holy crap.
Remember where you were in 1999 when you watched Diabolik? I remember being so sad. I think I’ve been sad ever since, actually. I was never fully on board as a trufan of the show until the Sci-Fi era (it was the first time I had cable myself), but once I found MST3K I went back and watched all the old episodes (I can remember renting VHS copies of Pod People and Mitchell and so on from Blockbuster) and found out everything I could about it and the show became a huge part of my life. And it has been ever since. I still laugh every time I hear “My sister’s ready to roll” and “The boiler room has a receptionist?!” And like others here, when they made the joke in 1101 about the scientist driving the freezer, I just about fell out of my chair.
Truthfully, I have been super depressed about life, the universe and everything recently, and today’s revelation of ALL THE SHOWS is exactly the pick-me-up I’ve been looking for. Thanks Joel, Jonah and everyone for making new MST3K for us! Thank you Joel, Mike, Kevin, Trace, Frank, Bill, Jim, the KTMA manager and the rest (what’s this ‘and the rest’ crap?) for giving me and all of us this thing that we call MST3K.

Personally, I thought the first episode was fantastic myself. It’s shocking at first to see MST3K with a bigger budget, multiple camera angles, HD quality, and Wil Wheaton cameos, but once Jonah and the Bots hit the theater, it felt like the show I know and love, and all my worries disappeared. 18 years suddenly felt like 18 minutes. REPTILICUS was prime material for the show, starting us out in comfortable, rubber-monster territory the same way REVENGE OF THE CREATURE started things out when they moved to Sci-Fi Channel. I mean, Peterson the dim-witted lab attendant…what can you say? It’s like someone said “Let’s put Ernest P. Worrell in the middle of a GODZILLA movie.”
Jonah Ray proves that the faith we put in him seeing him at the MST3K Reunion was not in vain, and Hampton and Baron made the Bots feel like the same characters we know and love while making them their own. Servo still knows how to fill out a dress, that’s for sure. As for Gypsy, it’s a HUGE difference having her voiced by an actual woman who makes no attempt to impersonate Jim Mallon at all and doesn’t play her as stereotypically dumb, but I like that, and I’m sure I’ll like it even more as the season goes along. I’m not one of those devout fanatics who demands these characters be exactly the same, and out of the characters, Gypsy’s the one who has the most room for some fleshing out and changing up, so I welcome it.
And I don’t think Patton and Felicia had much to do in the first episode, but again, I’m sure that’ll change in future episodes. I like what I see, though, and Felicia’s singing voice is top notch. And though the stream of riffs from the crew was a little too fast, I appreciate that they’re really going for it on their first time out; definitely better than when Joel and the Bots started out, where they barely got in one riff per minute. But all that matters is, they have the right stuff, they’re not worried about only making jokes appealing to the “millennials”, and it’s cool Tom’s hoverskirt is fully operational in the theater now. The fact he can get himself into the theater now instead of having to be carried blows my mind. (And that Pink Floyd reference? CLASSIC.)
Plus, I loved the music: the new full orchestra theme song with Har Mar Superstar, the snippets of old MST3K songs played in the commercial breaks (love the orchestra aesthetic, very TONIGHT SHOW-esque), and especially “Every Country Has a Monster”. Paul and Storm did a bang-up job on that song, and it’s hard to believe they brought rap music into the MST3K universe AND managed to pull it off! But that new version of the credit theme is especially astonishing; I’m not afraid to admit it gave me a huge lump in my throat.
So anyway, that’s my thoughts on it. I can now confidently say Joel knows what he’s doing, and I’m digging the hell out of it. It’s certainly gonna appeal to newer viewers as much as the fans, and I welcome the new generation of MSTies with open arms. Can’t wait to see the rest of the season on Friday.

Your post sort of contradicts itself, that doesn’t seem like good vibes at all. Having actually seen the first 2 episodes of the revival, it is the same formula it’s always been. General references mixed with current references all while keeping it clean (so far) which seems to be a concern for some. It’s nice to have an open mind. :)

I doubt Rifftrax would have removed it themselves, given that they don’t shy away from revisiting previously riffed material. Mike doesn’t strike me as concerned about what Joel would say.

Felicia Day said in an interview on io9 that she does know the answer, and that we’ll find out at some point. I’m okay with that.
Also, to answer another commenter, as far as I know nothing in the show is CG. Joel was very big on that.

In response to Lavendare (who said he had to save his money for Rifftrax since it didn’t appeal to millennials) — ahem I beg to differ. RT caters nothing more than to millennials, whereas the Return does nothing of the sort. It was refreshing to me that they returned (pun intended) to the MST3K roots, whereas RT has just denigrated into the “National Parks” sort of riffing that almost anyone can do (and I blame all the millennial writers, since Mike and company no longer write the actual riffs but just deliver them).
RT has become SO boring in the last couple of years the Return is a welcome change of pace. (And I LOVE Mike, Kevin and Bill — just not the writers they are using).

I agree, the revival is far more true to the actual MST3K aesthetic (even aside from the visual component, obviously) than RT is at this point. I enjoy both but if you’re looking for the real deal that carries the original appeal, this is it.

Love how the Mads’ Inventions all seem to be based on something from the previous episode. A riff in 1101 was directly related to the 1102 clock. A prop from Cry Wilderness was the invention in 1103.

Yeah, Mike/Kevin/Bill are all credited as writers on Rifftrax. Even when they were on MST3K, many of the riffs were written by people other than them.
I’ve gotta say that I’m not a fan of the ageism being evinced here either. I just turned 40, and LOVE the fact that people decades younger than myself respond to MST3K and Rifftrax, and are making their own contributions to its ongoing legacy. I don’t necessarily expect older people to stay 100% current with pop culture, but bear in mind that plenty of younger folks were willing to do the work to understand all the Boomer and Gen X references in the old show. Maybe it would behoove us older fans to see this as an intergenerational exchange, and maybe learn a thing or two from these youngsters.

There have been call backs to Mike episodes and Joel episodes, references to the obscure and to pop culture, and even old standbys like “serpentine!” They’re trying to have a little of something for everyone; the problem is that so many people want everything to be just for them.

You’re right that it would be better just to use good old-fashioned self-control and ignore him, but sometimes he sneaks up on me. I miss the name at the top of the post, I’m going along and it seems pretty reasonable at first, and then whoa, huge slam on

Connor Lastowska & Sean Thomason have also been the most frequently credited off-screen head writers, and some of Connor’s own spinoff solo riffs have had a distinct taste for Big Kitschy 80’s movies. (And that’s leaving Bridget & Mary Jo aside for another time…)
I’m not sure if that’s where RT’s sudden running obsession with personal-vendetta riffs against Shia LaBeouf and Nick Nolte are coming from (as opposed to the usual Things That Bug Mike), but our view of what humor needed to go after was crippled by our 00’s frustrations with the Bush Jr. era, and as most SNL watchers between elections will probably tell you, the New Kids after ’00 don’t seem to satirically know what’s “funny” unless they’re angry at something. Otherwise, it’s just a mystery of random jokes, pop-celeb/Internet-trend whines, and misdirected anger at…..something.

I was just teasing. If you have any close friends or relatives that use Netflix, and they don’t have it activated on too many devices, you could see if you could share an account with them. I’ve done that before with HBO Go and Hulu.

My suspicion is that Fuller House’s Netflix numbers are being goosed somewhat by viewers who are ironically riffing it with their friends, which tells me that Netflix was in the MST3K business before they were in the *MST3K business*, if you know what I mean.

Also, you can get one free month of Netflix when you activate a new account. If you used to have one and deactivated it, try setting up the free trial using a new email. A month of watching the new MST3K eps, yum.

Fuller House is (by all accounts) their most watched show by a fairly wide margin. If it helps keep things like MST3K and other actual good shows on the air, God bless ’em. Stay on Netflix for 20 seasons

SPOILER-FREE COMMENT ABOUT REST OF SEASON: In looking over the movies riffed past Reptilicus, I’m very happy to see quite a few that I’ve never seen, and some that I’ve never even heard of before. While everyone’s mileage will vary, of course, I think Joel and co. should be praised for casting a very wide net in film selection. One of the reasons why MST3K is one of only, what, three or four TV shows I love is that it helped form my very strange taste in movies. The fact that the new show can continue to give me experiences I’ve not had before really says something, I think, coming from someone who will gladly discourse on the merits of, say, Italian Jaws ripoffs (watch L’Ultimo Squalo! You will be glad you did!)

And what I’d tried to say before hitting the Quote button instead of a quickly-expiring Edit:
If you read the comments on the Angel’s Revenge thread, a few of the RT fans are getting a little loudly weary of the classic-MST3K self-cannibalization when there’s so much unexplored territory, but that brings up the difference with callbacks:
MK&B seem to depend on cult callbacks, and mentioning “Captain Santa!” every time Cameron Mitchell shows up in a movie, because pretty much all they have to go on by now is Cult of Cult. They may not be doing NEW movies, but they’re sure as heck going to make sure you know how to quote the OLD ones.
If producer Joel decides to cash in on a few “cult lines” he liked from watching the SciFi era at home, knows from secondhand experience that the fans quote them, and hedges his bets with having Jonah do a “Rowsdower!” callback, it’s more like a bit of safety net for bringing the franchise back. When it gets to be the same problem, it’ll be noticeable, but here, he seems to have a better grasp on the new material, and it’s just a marketing shoutout to cement a shaky link back to the old fans.
Oh, and Joel thought the bit was funny in Final Sacrifice, too. Yes.
