What do MSTies think of the Rhino and Shout! DVDs in general? What did Rhino do better and vice and versa? What would they like to see as future Shout!

For me, I’m not a big fan of the stock Shout! DVD covers…I wish they would
get rid of Roman numerals already and mention the episode numbers. “The
Making of MST3K” would make for a great extra.
And while we’re at it: What movie (never mind the rights issues) would you most like to see in an upcoming set?
My thoughts: Even though some of the same people were at both places, it seems pretty clear to me that Shout “gets” MST3K more than Rhino did, especially at the end. The figurines alone show that. I don’t have a problem with the Roman numerals, and I think relying too heavily on the episode numbers might be too confusing for the casual buyer.
As for extras, I would love to see all the TV specials and I really enjoy the introductions by the cast members. The interviews with cast members can be hit and miss, but they’re at their best when Shout is able to coax backstage info about the movie of the movie out of them.
As for an episode I’d like to see, no question: 610- THE VIOLENT YEARS.

I don’t really care for many of the video extras. but i really like the miniatures.
I’d like the whole crew in mini Dr F, TVs Frank, Mike, Joel, Pearl, Brainguy, Bobo, cambot, etc.
No. 1 on my wish list, without a doubt, is Pumaman! Squirm comes in a close second.
As for the Shout packages, I’m pretty happy — hey, any MST3K episodes, in any form, is great — but would it be too much to ask for chapters, pretty please?
It’s really just a formality now, since I prefer the sound quality of my old tapes & skyroniter’s dvds. I still get the factory releases for posterity though.

I mean truly, even after all these, there are still a lot of really good shows.
Which begs the question –
Why must it be four?
Why not five and six-disc sets?
Conversely, why not two and three-disc sets, yet releasing them much more frequently?
And really Shout Factory, at the rate you are releasing these, your fan base will have all died off before you have released even half of the remaining episodes. Your window for profit is shrinking yearly. It’s time you got cracking on a more frequent release schedule.
EVERY episode would be fabulous, but it’s never gonna happen. Then again, Goonies never say die…

There’s no way to improve on Shout’s sets, especially the 3D menus (my favorite is the Crawling Eye). One idea for Deadly Mantis: Crow, Tom and Gypsy are in the tunnel from the end, in the Hazmat suits. The mantis appears and eats Tom. Crow and Gypsy shoot the mantis, which makes it run away. The extras are great too; I think the #1 things I’d like to see are the Summer Blockbuster Reviews.
I doubt anyone cares what I have to say since I barely contribute on the forums, but I have to agree with Gary Bowden (post 34). I’ve always wanted to see Joel’s film “Statical Planets”, and I think that would be a terrific addition to a future set.
Also, chapter menus would be nice!
As for episodes, I think for Joel, my top two picks are Rocketship X-M and The Amazing Colossal Man. For Mike, I’ll go with Revenge of the Creature and Gorgo.
Joel Hodgson’s The TV Wheel would make a great extra feature for MST3K. Also, add Daddy-O to my list of desired episodes.
I’d like to echo the sentiment that the Shout Factory DVD releases are just about perfect. Aside from getting cast members or Larry Blamire to record introductions for every single episode (plus whatever MST3K hour wraps/promo clips/etc. are available), there’s not much else we can ask for.
As for what I’d like to see in future releases, my ultimate set would be:

I nominated ‘War of the Colossal Beast’ but I forgot that ‘The Amazing Colossal Man’ still isnt out.
(Even though I do have the rhino vhs).
Its essential that both come out on dvd.
Also I always forget to mention ‘LAST OF THE WILD HORSES’, with one of the best sets of host segments ever. That alone makes it a must-release, but it’s got funny riffing too.
…and I’d throw ‘King Dinosaur’ in there too, since it has Joey the lemur which directly relates to ‘Last of the Wild Horses’, so if you don’t know the original, it won’t make sense in ‘Last of the Wild Horses’ when the ‘nice’ TV’s Frank is doing the Joey the lemur song.

A big ditto to #55’s request for features on other crew members. Jef, Brad, Patrick, Beez…there’s gotta be some good stories there. And I’m all for more shorts discs, partly so I can watch Progress Island at will and partly just because I like the idea of the Commander Cody segments all quarantined on their own disc.

…although I wouldn’t be mad if Riding With Death were substituted for the latter and carried over the TV-show-compacted-into-a-“movie” motif from the Joel set.
Lastly, I hope I live to see the day that personal faves The Screaming Skull and The Thing That Wouldn’t Die are issued. Not as widely popular, I think, but I am evil and must have snacks.
The RHINO vs SHOUT! debate has been coming down the pike for a while. They both have many positive qualities and some negtive. The slim cases are better in my book than the gatefold covers. The mini posters are a waste of paper. The chapter skips have never been an issue for me because I have never used them for any reason. RHINO’s artwork was interesting but SHOUT! is so much more uniform in style.
RHINO seemed to get films that were public domain or still easy to licence.
SHOUT! has gone out of the way to bring the fans some REALLY hard to get titles. I have been surprised by a title or two on pretty much every SHOUT! set to date.
RHINO has a few out and out dud sets (I’m looking at you Vol. 11).
I liked the fact that SHOUT! did release the two out of print titles last month in limited edition for fans that missed the first run. If they continue, it’s great for fans that want to complete their collections and others don’t have to “double dip”.
EXTRAS & WHAT I’D LIKE TO SEE:
MST Scrapbook. I watched this about 6 months ago and there is a lot of stuff on there. Like the 20th Anniversary box documentary I think they would have to cut the contents of the tape over all four discs. Thus making it one boxset GIANT extra.
Finally, The summer and Oscar specials would be nice. Bumpers for episodes (the Comedy Channel one for ROBOT vs THE AZTEC MUMMY was cool). And cast intros are always entertaining. As soon as I buy a new set I watch the intros even if I don’t plan on watching the episode at that time. Oh yah, SHORTS Vol.3 needs an official (not special TV offer) release.
#112 Liked your all-Mike lineup, and agree about Riding With Death. That turkey needs to make its way to DVD soon.
And ditto on The Screaming Skull. It may have gotten tiresome at times, but I freely admit that the ending with the “ghost” running through the garden does give me some chills…
Unquestionably, I would love to see “San Francisco International,” “Riding With Death,” and “Being From Another Planet.” I know Shout! has the second movie available unriffed, but I recall they said on their forums that there was no plan to have the MST3K version released. Le sigh. Maybe that will change.
I enjoyed the Rhino cover art a lot more, although the volumes that had things that stick out (a button on one, another had a dial that changed pictures of MST3K cast) irked me. Aesthetically, I liked the fold outs on Rhino better than the individual boxes on Shout, and I don’t like the posters either. Aesthetics has never kept me from buying a set yet, though. The extras are great and I liked the figurines, even Gypsy that some fans really hated.
Theoretically it was nice that the early sets allowed one to watch the original, un-MSTed movie, though it’s not something I ever used.
I really like the current thin case design with the original Tom and Crow artwork, and matching disc art. Easier to use, takes less space, and nicer to look at. Though yeah, the cardboard the Shout cases sit in does look more generic.
First, The Mike Nelson: Destroyer of Worlds set from post #114 is an awesome idea. Mike’s Death Star-like habit is even an entry on tvtropesDOTorg. The Gumby short is one possible reason for Screaming Skull not having been released yet, so barring that how about this Mike set:

Of course they don’t have to be 4-disc sets, I’m more than willing to buy a 5-disc set (besides the upcoming Gamera collection).
Rhino was okay but I’m glad that Shout is now releasing these things. Chapter menus would be convenient but they’re not essential. The Steve Vance mini-posters are not bad, they’re certainly not a deal-breaker nor a deal-maker. If any new figurines are made (these extras I like but they shouldn’t be in EVERY set) Cambot should be the next one. I’d keep the Roman numerals on the box front but put the episode numbers on the individual disc cases. Regardless of which episodes appear on a set, I’m likely to buy it anyway, so that discussion is academic for me.
I really don’t like double sided discs so I really don’t want to see the non-mstied included. As far as which movies, anything at all would be fine by me. I suppose I have a sot spot for Bert Gordon’s films and the films Susan Hart controls now. But anything really.

At first I wasn’t too keen on the illustrations used on the Shout Factory covers, but they’ve grown on me. Some, like the recent Magic Voyage of Sinbad are quite good. While many of the Rhino cases were quite clever, they often didn’t reflect the episodes they contained very well. I think one of the Godzilla episodes used a picture of a T-Rex for example. It was just kind of half-assed. However you feel about the Shout Factory illustrations, their consistent design make for a much more cohesive group. The individual cases used by Shout are much more convenient too.
For extras, I too would love to see the Academy Awards specials. I’d also enjoy a few episodes with cast commentaries. The idea of KTMAs as bonus material sounds fantastic, but I don’t see how an entire episode could be considered a bonus, much less fit on a disc. Some of the KTMAs should defiantly be released one way or another.
What specific episodes do I crave? The Day The Earth Froze is at the top of my list, but I’ll be happy with anything that hasn’t seen official release yet (well, maybe not a collection of the serials). I think that Shout has been wise in re-releasing previously available shows as single disks, and keeping the fresh material in the sets. It would upset a lot of people if the Shout sets began including old Rhino episodes.
Finally, I really liked the idea of MST3K planet ball that Shout gave away to people who ordered directly from them. I’d love to see one of those as the special item in their next enhanced boxed set.
My problem with some of the Rhino covers was that the fiddly bits came off if you actually touched them. The Shout covers are OK but I wouldn’t mind actual pictures from the movies instead of Roman numerals.

There’s is nothing I would take AWAY from how Shout is releasing the sets. While the cardboard containers are a bit generic, it’s the stuff inside (acquiring great episodes, the slick slimcases, sweet extras, groovy posters, occasional figurines) that counts more. Chapter menus would be great but I tend to just press the fast forward button if I was want to see a specific host segment/scene.
While I liked Rhino, their artwork wasn’t MST3K specific. Yes, it tied into themes of the episodes but if it’s between seeing a singing fish plague on a wall over a television or seeing Crow and Servo go up against a werewolf, I’m going to choose Crow and Servo every time.
As for things I’d like to see: another vote for the specials, another vote for some KTMA footage (entire episodes would be silly but perhaps the KTMA Gamera host segments as easter eggs for the Gamera set?), Crow on “Talk Soup”, a special edition of “MST3K: TM” and as for episodes….

I’ll also agree with those who say that Shout seems to “get” MST a little better that Rhino. Rhino did a good job overall, but they did tend to repeat themselves (How many times did they put out the Design For Dreaming short?) and the extras on the Shout boxes have been really nice.

Though we have wandered off the path a bit– post #3 was the trailblazer for that questionable move– it was established that the rights issues would be ignored. There are episodes that are still not released because of the rights issues but due, again, to the criteria of this weekend’s discussion, we were ignoring the obvious 400-pound gorilla on the pink elephant’s back.
I’d also like them to release a new pair of boxer shorts in a future boxed set.
Ohhh, Mr. B(ob) up at post #108 has a great suggestion, Shout! needs to totally release Joel’s THE TV WHEEL as a special feature. I treasure my VHS dub copy (got it back in the tape trading days, as I lost my original copy that I taped off TV) and would love to see it remastered and in “decent” quality. Plus, it was a really funny show (“No one laughs in the house of 1000 mysteries! Oh no!”) with appearances by David Cross and Andy Kindler, if I recall correctly. Good good stuff, I remember that Comedy Central was hyping the beejezus out of the thing, as it aired directly after the “last” MST episode LASERBLAST. It aired once and was promptly never seen on TV again.

In addition to the guests on The TV Wheel” that were mentioned in post #134, there was Paul Feig, the creator of “Freaks and Geeks” which was, in my opinion, one of the best t.v. shows ever produced.
I’m little behind on my Shout collection. Have they finally decided to include a Chapter Menu on the disk?
It was the one standout feature of the Rhino editions.
As a matter of course, each original episode was segmented. And fans might enjoy revisiting some favorite segment without risking the repetitive stress injury that the Fast Forward button entails.
@ Ralph, Freaks & Geeks was a very special show, indeed. If there’s anyone here who hasn’t seen it yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? It featured Cinematic Titanic’s Dave (Gruber) Allen as a hippie guidance counselor, not to mention cameos by Joel and Trace. And, believe it or not, Seth Rogen’s actually kind of likable in it.
Add me to the list of people who want, nay DEMAND ‘Agent for H.A.R.M.”. (“I’m gonna open the HELL out of this door!”) And I really wish we’d seen “Shorts Vol. 3” on a wider release DVD. My VHS tape is near extinction (As are VHS players) Even though some shorts have been released with their respective episodes, there’s still some I miss being able to watch easily.
@135 & 137, oh yeah, Paul Feig WAS on THE TV WHEEL, good call. And FREAKS AND GEEKS is pretty much one of the best shows ever, next to MST of course. I checked it out initially because of the Trace and Joel cameos (Joel’s is especially hilarious as the shop owner who sells Sam a Persian Night Suit, but it’s actually just a jump suit. God, that episode is funny) but found out it was a really decent show, well written and acted (James Franco, Seth Rogen, & Jason Segel all got their starts on this one) with just enough heart and intelligence balanced with all the funny. Good, good stuff.
And, the DVD to Freaks and Geeks was released by. . . . SHOUT! FACTORY. Synergy!

Ep 405: BEING FROM ANOTHER PLANET: not one of my faves, BUT it does have Tragic Moments Figurines – my all-time favorite invention of the Mads’). Plus, Shout! has already licensed it (as TIMEWALKER) for non-MST DVD release.
Reissue set XIX w/o the Gypsy figure (the only reason I haven’t yet bought it).
Apart from that, the remaining Roger Corman/AIP & Bert I. Gordon pics, and Comedy Central promos.
And maybe more realistic or flexible ‘street dates’. Shout! has had a few problems with extra features (I’m including non-MST here as well) which couldn’t be corrected due to having to hit their ‘street date’.

I think subtitles would be hard to do. Think about it the whole show is comic timing, plus you’d have the people in the movie talking and Joel/Mike and the Bots talking at the same time. It would be a lot of work to keep up with the riffs, who said what when and how about when Tom breaks into song. Maybe the host segments could be subtitled…..
Oh by the way about Freaks and Geeks J.Elvis wrote one #15 NOSHING AND MOSHING and co wrote #2 BEERS AND WEIRS WITH JUDD APATOW. When we went to a Cinematic Titanic show I got Joel, Trace, J.Elvis and Gruber to sign the booklet. But what was real cool was Gruber said to me “Did you see the set that looks like a high school yearbook?” Then he said to this guy who had one “Can I show this guy (me) your yearbook?” Then he opened it and showed me J.Elvis’s high school picture inside. I don’t know if it had anyone else’s high school pictures like Joel’s or Trace I didn’t ask. But that’s the cool thing about Gruber, every time we’ve met him he seems like someone I’ve known my whole life. Also Mary Jo’s husband is real cool to talk with at the shows.

What they could try are two subtitle tracks: one for the movie itself, and one for the riffs. That way, you’d be able to choose which dialogue you’d want to follow.
That’s how Monty Python did a few of their releases (especially Holy Grail). You could choose the dialogue or, hilariously, snippets of a Shakespeare play which vaguely reflected what was being done on screen.
This is a VERY minor complaint, but I find it kind of odd that a lot of the Shout Factory special features are done in widescreen despite the actual episode being in standard ratio.
I really like the Ballyhoo Motion Pictures documentaries. And since Shout Factory took over, it seems like the Best Brains alumni have made a lot more appearances.
I’m hoping that the previously unreleased episodes keep coming, but I’m not holding my breath waiting on some, like the Godzilla movies.
The DVD guide for Satellite News is a set or two behind at the moment. Could anyone tell me what differences there are with the two Shout Factory re-releases and the original Rhino ones?

#148 Modern pro video gear is probably 16:9 widescreen by default these days. Is it even possible to shoot old fashioned 4:3 tv aspect ratio anymore?
If anyone has the connections to pull off a special edition of the MST movie it’s Criterion. Look at the set they did for Terry Gilliam’s movie Brazil. I’d settle for a workprint version of the movie before Gramercy made them cut and reshoot things, if that’s all that exists now.
I would definitely want “Tv Wheel” released. The evil magic/practical joke salesman and his monkey sidekick, (performed by Joel!) still crack me up.
