Super Bowl Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Favorite Sports-Related Riff or Bit

Alert reader “droid” writes:

Since the Packers will be playing the Steelers in this years Super Bowl, I thought it would be fun to pick your funniest sports riffs. Living in Wisconsin I’ll go with The Giant Spider Invasion on all the “Go Packers, whoooooo!!!” comments. That brings a smile every time.

I’m gonna go with Dr. F and Frank, dressed as ’70s relief pitchers Rollie Fingers and Tug McGraw, respectively, in episode 622- Angels’ Revenge. There’s just something so random about it.

What’s your pick?

There’s also the NFL graphics at the nbeginning of Time Chasers
    “buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-buh
    buh-buh-buh-buh-buh.”

And sort of sports related, the miniature golf putting green
in Space Mutiny where grandma made out with Biff Hardcheese.

I can’t for the life of me remember the ep, but there’s a POV shot from some guy on a ground and I think it’s Mike that goes: “Chuck Wepner vision.”

  5. #32 Nailed it for me.

“We have attached our egos to you!”

Encapsulates in one line why I hate the Sports Industrial Complex. But still, “Go Packers!”

Some of my favorite moments would include:
    The Packers WIN THE SUPERBOWL!!!
Cambot’s sidehacking riff in The Sidehackers
And the worlds worst sheriff who runs around town telling people that they are not rady for some football.

I always liked Crow’s Jackie Stewart imitation when they got giant slot cars. And someone mentioned the rather obscure “He runs like Natrone Means” quote that Mike makes in an earlier discussion. I went to college with Nate, so I got a kick out of the quote. Natrone Means was an epic running back for UNC and later in the pros. I think he was playing for SD when they went, and ultimately lost, the Super Bowl.

“Krankor blows up a tackler at the 50, and there’s no stopping him now.”
“Filmed in Chuck Weppner cam.” or any Chuck Weppner reference.
From The Creeping Terror: “There’s something huge in there.”
    Mike: “Boog Powell?”
Being a Bears fan living in Wisconsin, I can totally relate to the Packers riffs.

I watched The Deadly Mantis this past week and there was one that totally floored me.

There is a shot of an air craft carrier with the number 34 on it.

Crow – “The U.S.S. Walter Payton.”

  11. As has been mentioned, the Larry Czonka riffs in “Final Sacrifice” and the Packers! riffs in a couple of movies are perfect examples of M&TB relentlessly beating riffs into the ground in the later years.

One of my favorites (words might not be exact):
“They found the demon doll – they found Chucky!”
    “No, it’s just Keith Magnuson.”
    “Nooo, that’s worse!!!”

  12. Warren says:

A shot of the buoy in Devil Fish: Crow says something like “the 17th is a water hole surrounded by water on all sides” in a hushed, golf-announcer voice. I never liked golf but thanks to two close relatives who play golf I know a fair bit about it and really laughed because I understood that bit. Boggy Creek 2: When the ridiculously-conceived weight-detecting radar picks up “the creature”, I think they say it’s William “The Refrigerator” Perry or maybe some other big football player, not 100% sure so don’t quote me on it. Future War featured the Randy Johnson-model cyborg, of course. 20 years ago I was heavily into baseball cards but now sports are basically irrelevant to my life, though I still get a fair number of references.

    BILL BUCKNER!

And, of course, all the Packers references. I’m not much of a football fan, but when they made those jokes in “The Giant Spider Invasion,” I almost fell over laughing.

Honorable mention to the NFL graphics reference at the beginning of “Time Chasers.”

In the beginning of “Soultaker”, a guy walks out into the hallway and Tom riffs: “Good luck delivering the baby, I’ve got tickets to the game.” Or something like that.

  20. Ed from Mpls says:

The Godzilla vs. Megalon battle riff includes a number of announcing gems including an all-time favorite (maybe because I’m a pro-wrasslin fan too): “He’s got a tree! This isn’t the Godzilla we know!”

Also, as someone who lived in Green Bay for a time, I’ve always loved all the “Packers…. whooooo!” type bits — to the point that I do that any time someone is shown on screen cheering.

In “Sidehackers” better than a reference, the ESPN ticker pops up and shows some numbers from the motor cycle racing action, exactly like they were doing it on ESPN at that time. Absolutley classic !!!

In the Comedy Central finale, Laserblast, th main character sees the arm-encompassing laser, touches it gently, and then jumps back, to which Tom Servo says…
“Hey, Albert Belle DID cork his bat!”
…which, being from Cleveland and a huge Indians fan, made me burst out laughing on the spot.

To this day, whenever somebody tentatively touches something, I think that line (and, every once in a while, it slips out).

Couple of ones stand out for me. One, is when the people are leaving after the combat rod fight in Phantom Planet, Mike did the voice of the old Twins PA announcer: ‘The totals on the board are correct. Thank you for attending Pleated Skirt Day at Combat Rod Park(with an echo).’ Also in Colossus and the Headhunters, Colossus is fighting one of the headhunters when Crow exclaims, ‘And Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan has Wahoo McDaniels in a death lock!’ Love the baseball and pro wrestling refrences. There was also a mention of ‘Nick Bockwinkle’s belt buckle’ in Alien from L.A.

  25. CG says:

    Great topic!

I love all the ones mentioned (especially “Packerrrsssss!”) As a Bama football fan, I’ve always appreciated all the Boggy Creek football riffs involving Arkansas, a fellow member of the SEC. (Even if they didn’t belong to the SEC at the time of the movie.)

In the Rifftrax to “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” when Harry and Ron are approaching the Snake seal in the dungeon, somebody says, “Kenny ‘the Snake’ Stabler lives in there!” Kenny Stabler was a quarterback at Alabama in the 1960s, who later played for Oakland and became an Alabama football announcer.

From Boggy Creek II: ” I’m going..the cheerleaders plan has worked.”

Also, in Movie Megacheese the chapter on Bruce Willis where Mike mentions Minnesotans constantly firing off rambling incoherent letters about the incompetence of the Vikings coaching staff.

  27. PeaceTalk says:

Surprised this didn’t get brought up considering its Minnesota nature, but another sports reference aimed at Crenshaw during Boggy Creek II was Servo’s “Kent Hrbek, three months after retirement.” Hrbek was a legendary baseball player for the Twins who also hosts a regional outdoors show in the upper Midwest.

While watching Giant Spider Invasion in prep for the Super Bowl, I also caught “Greg Norman at The Masters” in reference to characters being out in a field in the middle of nowhere. It probably references Norman’s epic collapse in the final round of the ’96 Masters.

    And of course, “Packers!”

  28. MPSh says:

@127: I think it also referenced Norman’s penchant for wearing those goofy hats…

Wow. I can’t believe the variety of sports riffs! I’m not much of a sports fan, but I will mention the tennis host segment from 12 to the Moon, with Tom’s McEnroe-esque meltdown, and his odd “insult” to Gypsy the ref to “grow some hair!” Didn’t McEnroe actually say something to that effect?

Hope you all enjoy the Super Bowl…let me know who wins!

  30. Trilaan says:

Also from episode 622 Angels Revenge:

“Mike, it was pointless and silly of us to dress as 70’s relief pitchers. So to rectify that we’ve decided to dress as Bobby Riggs and Billie-Jean King because, Mike, we pride ourselves on being current and topical.”

  31. JC says:

I’m going to have to go with “Go Packers whooo!!!” and “Are you ready for some fooball???” even though those 2 are the most common riffs listed here. I’m not a big sports fan, but I have loved using the Packers line this whole week. It’s made my mom crack up everytime too!

Also, in “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die,” I remember the guy holding his wife’s head and running with it – “He’s at the 20, he’s at the 10, no one will catch him!”

  32. Kenneth Morgan says:

Tough to determine my favorite, but Cambot’s ESPN-style ticker during “Sidehackers” is high on my list. Nice to have Cambot actually do a rare riff.

Three bits that, so far as I know, haven’t been mentioned yet, to my surprise:
-Joel’s pre-game pep talk from “Lost Continent” (Beat ’em! beat ’em!! BEAT ‘EM!! BEAT ‘EM!!!).
-Mike & the ‘bots non-sensical discussion of the “big game” in the Turkey Day version of “Night of the Blood Beast” (“Game ‘o inches!”).
-Mike rushes the mound from “Incredible Melting Man” (“Hi-REEEAH!”).

@108 – This many posts to mention Sidehackers? :)

(Although my pick was the “New sports slang for Sidehacking”, from the early S2 glory days of Insane Servo Host-Seg Ad-Libbing:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B77pJqwN-D4
“And he’s going for a Butterscotch Floosh with a Frunky-Frunky-Frunky!”)

Did anyone mention: “Les Steckle begins training camp” from Red Zone Cuba? He was the Vikings coach that took over for the legendary Bud Grant, I believe. He was an ex-marine and ran a really tough camp. I think he lasted for about a year with the Vikes. …. Packers!!! Whooo!! Packers!!! (Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of Packers fans here.) … No smiley face, no smiley face, no smiley face…
