Weekend Discussion Thread: What Do We Do?

Alert reader Andrew has a bit of a change of pace:

Awhile ago you had a thread on what Msties find funny. Along that same line, I’d like to know what Msties do for a living. Are we computer-hacking photophobiacs who live in our parents’ basement, or are we other societal cornerstones like firefighters, police officers, professors, or clergy? What do we DO?

Interesting! Okay, don’t give out more info than you are comfortable with. And you don’t need to say WHERE you do it or give specific company names or anything.

Me: I’m an editor at a newspaper. Yes, they still exist. You?

Terrific thread! I always suspected we were fascinating. I’m an RN, several years working with HIV patients, now with hospice. Like the rest of us, I am thankful for a good laugh at the end of the day. MST/CT/RT always help me see life in a healthy balance. By the way, I am currently looking for someone to do. Maybe we could do a Personals thread sometime? I like pina coladas, gettin caught in the rain…

I’m an astrophysics major in college. I don’t have a paying job right now, but I used to be a janitor. Yep, a janitor (but I didn’t get a jumpsuit).

  4. I don’t live in my mother’s basement, I AM the mother with a basement full of kids. Fortunately, the kids aren’t too old to be down there.

I also babysit. If I were to get a real job (and someday I aim to do just that) I would be an elementary school substitute teacher.

Unemployed at the moment, my past lives included shoe dept manager for a now defunct department store chain, car salesman, taxi driver, and customer service person in a Office Space type situation. At this point I might become a slop cop like Mitchell, just so I can bring in a paycheck.

I work for a non-profit agency that provides vocational and transit assistance for people with disabilities. In English, we help people with disabilities find jobs, work those jobs (I personally assist two of our clients at their job sites), and learn to take the city bus to and from work. It doesn’t pay much, but I genuinely enjoy going to work every morning, so that’s something.

I also write, but seeing as how it’s mainly poems and short stories, I’ll probably never be doing it for a “living.”

  7. Currently unemployed and trying to find a job I won’t hate too much. My dream is to have one of those jobs where I wake up in the morning, throw on a housecoat, pour a cup of coffee, sit down at my computer, turn it on, AND I’M AT WORK! No commute, no suit and tie, no boss breathing down my neck.

I’d love to get something where I could employ my love of cartooning. If anyone is interested, I have a website featuring my cartoons linked to this response. Check it out if you get the chance.

    This thread is “ubsolutly fussinating.”

I used to be a musician for live theatre (rehearsal pianist, audition pianist, improv pianist, music director, the list goes on) in order to pay for tuition for my BS in psychology. Now I’m a doctoral student studying to become a professor in a psychology or education department specializing in methodology, statistics, and psychometrics.

I am an American Sign Language interpreter. I mainly work at a public high school interpreting for a group of Deaf students who are mainstreamed, where I also coach our Academic Bowl team (which is like “In The Know” but just for Deaf students). I also interpret for a video relay service, which means I interpret for Deaf people placing calls through videophones. If you work in customer service anywhere, you may know what that is!

Was an A/V geek (more of an A/V jerk) and a desk counter (counting how many desks were in a room in the morning, and how many were there in the evening) both for a university. Nuts to that! Now I am back in school for electrical engineering so that I can gain a career in modified shovel craft racing.

Currently (due to being a week away from turning 19) I am a freshman at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan. I hope to become a radio announcer (my personality on air will be a mix of Casey Kasem and Grant Hudson–he was an over-the-top news reporter at CKLW in the 70’s), or to launch my prototype Television/Radio network, S.T.R.N. It might happen!

I see I’m not the only professor! I’m a biology professor (Ph.D. in Genetics). I teach genetics and immunology to a lot of pre-med students, and I do research on crop genetics. As I mentioned in a much earlier thread, MST3K was a weekly ritual for me and my friends when we were in grad school, just a few years ago. It was a great stress-reliever for us.

Interesting to hear about what every does! Clearly MST3K fandom transcends all career groups!
