Weekend Discussion Thread: Musical Covers

Alert reader Ted writes:

What song on the show, either a Best Brains original or a flavorless musical missive in one of the films (I’m looking at YOU Dick Contino), do you think might benefit from a cover treatment by a popular band/artist? My thoughts are Green Day punking up “Toobular Boobular Joy” or Fiona Apple getting moody and broody covering “Yipes Stripes” from #514 Teenage Strangler.

I’d like to hear what Elvis Costello could do with “Sodium.”

What’s your pick?

Devo doing Torgo’s theme and the Gamera Song.

Rob Zombie or Alice Cooper covering Zombie Stomp. Ozzy Osbourne kinda beat them to it.

Glen Danzig doing an acoustic version of Planning Revenge on my Friends.

I was thinking of this myself, being a big Slayer fan.

88-back when I was in a band, I always wanted to cover “Clown In The Sky” for a set-ender, but no one, I repeat NO ONE would have got it, so..
A couple more from me-I wanna hear The Dead Milkmen cover the SOL “Fight Song” (“…we don’t care, don’t despair, we’re not wearing underwear…”). And either Burn Witch Burn or The Clancy Brothers do “Kathy oh Kathy My Wild Irish Lassie”.

Gary Numan could also do a nice album of MST covers including MST theme, MST credits music (Love theme), and Torgo’s theme, Trumpy’s magic show music, and many more.

Don’t forget, Pat Boone is still around and could bring a fair amount of authenticity to a lot of covers.

#107 – You have heard Pat’s “No More Mr. Nice Guy” album? Authenticity is not necissarily the word I’d use…

William Shatner, singing Sideburns from The Beatniks. It would be horrible but awesome at the same time.

Josh Grobin sings “If Chauffers Ruled The World”!!!!! God, this is getting addictive. I will end by saying the LAST thing I want to hear is the kids from Glee doing a medley of all of these songs. Well, then again…..

  13. Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

Surfin’ Bird by the Trashmen is a mash-up cover of two Rivingtons’ songs: The Bird’s the Word, featured in The Crawling Hand, and their earlier hit Papa Oom Mow Mow. So to assert that Surfin’ Bird is a cover of a song featured on MST3k would be correct, but the song on Family Guy is Surfin’ Bird by the Trashmen, NOT The Bird’s the Word by the Rivingtons.

A third try on Tubular Boobular…

Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke, with Disney animation goin’ on in the background.

For a younger generation, Nathan Lane, with the original Broadway cast.

For an even younger generation…Nyan Cat?

What’s that? They already did? WONDERFUL! :)

Well the Kinks could do “There’s a New World” from Catalina Caper. Wait, that’s already happened……

OK, then The Soft Boys and/or Robyn Hitchcock could do a medley of The Pants Song and Hike Up You Pants. I’d also like to hear De Dannan do My Wild Irish Ireland….

It’s OK if this topic was already done, it’s great to get some fresh ideas.

I LOVE the idea of Streisand and Diamond on “When Loving Lovers Love.” Dang near blew iced tea through my nostrils when I read that.

    1. The Monkees doing “Scuba Party” from Catalina Caper with appropriately crazy and goofy video.

    2. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band doing “Hear the Engines Roar Now” (a.k.a. “Idiot Control”) from Pod People.

    3. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons doing “Vicki” from Eegah!

    4. Patsy Cline doing “Where can He Be?” from I Accuse My Parents.

    5. Hank Williams, Jr. doing “Slam on Down the Road” from Riding With Death.

    6. The Beach Boys doing “Summer Love” from Horror of Party Beach.

    7. Duran Duran doing the dance club music from Space Mutiny.

    8. Madonna doing “I Slept With My Baby on the Dance Floor Last Night” from the Deadly Bees.

    “The Canada Song – Rush”

They’d probably be game for it. They did a song with the McKenzie brothers that had some hilarious bantering before the song proper.

There was already a funny punk cover of “Hooray for Santy Claus” by Sloppy Seconds. I’d like to Motorhead do a cover of “Whispering Christmas Warrior”

Oh, how about Combustible Edison covering the ‘Century 21 Calling’ song the kids in the short listen to as they ride the escalator? “We died, we’re in Heaven.”

As for ‘When I Held Your Brain In My Arms,’ the only possible choice is Cliff ‘Ukelele Ike’/ ‘Jiminy Cricket’ Edwards. He might even throw in a whistling chorus.

I think Trent Reznor/Nine Inch nails could do something interesting with the music from Manos and Incredibly Strange Creatures… .

    Great topic btw.

klisch #21> It’s an interesting suggestion having Styper do the Sandy Frank song. I’d love to hear the why you put those two names together on this one.

How about an 80’s guitar shredding type (think George Lynch or Yngwie J. Malmsteen) taking on the Torgo theme?

  29. Flying Saucers Over Oz says:

Going off-topic, the Torgo Theme has me convinced Torgo would make a splendid game show host. He could ask the questions, then the music would accompany the contestents struggling to think of the answer. Winners get a trip to Valley Lodge, a case of Sunkist (“Tastes so good even The Master would approve!”) and a Thighmaster.

  31. Since we’re having Sherman set the way-back machine for this experiment, how about the Beastie Boys doing “Master Ninja Theme Song”? To my ears the cast were channeling the Beasties for their take anyway. What about Bjork croon-warbling through “Sing Whenever I Sing Whenever I Sing” for something utterly sublime or insane, your pick?

The Dead Milkmen (circa 1985) could do a perfect cover of Clay & Lar’s Flesh Barn.

  33. Cornjob says:

As far as real life covers of MST songs go:

I’m sure I’ve got a thrash metal cover of Motorhead’s Ace of Spades by Sodom or Exodus somewhere in my music collection.

And it’s not exactly a cover, but Ministry sampled the Judge’s speech in The Violent Years in the song So What?

For that matter Rob Zombie sampled a line of dialogue from Amazing Colossal Man on an album called The Sinister Urge.

I am a fan of Mst3k. I just came back from G-Fest and I know that you guys always make fun of the Gamera movies and some over there don’t like mst3k. I made a film titled Of Gods and Giant Monsters whic is really Godzilla vs Gamera. The ending of the film was a tribute to mst3k and it got the biggest lauphe. i even used the Gamera song from the Gamera episode from mst3k, here is the link.

  36. Charles says:

Billy Idol doing Kiss Kicker ’99 would be a lot of fun, and it’d probably be recognizable.

Bryan Ferry could probably do a hilariously serious cover of “Eeny Meany Miny Moe” from I Was a Teenage Werewolf.

  37. Charles says:

Actually, Bryan Ferry doing a cover of any song they did, from an actual film or one of their originals, would be hilarious and glorious. Ferry’s done so many covers in so many styles that there’s no way anything could ever seem inappropriate for him these days. So he could do Sodium or Hike Your Pants Up, followed by Ace of Spades and You Better Run, and it wouldn’t seem totally insane, for him at least.
