I’d completely forgotten about the MST Hour wraps for “Gamera” and “Gamera Vs. Guiron” until reading their responses to the extras. Fortunately there is still time to include, so I will. As for the KTMA host segs (or any footage from KTMA), I was not able to include.
Here’s an update Vol. XXI: “MST3K Vs. Gamera” (as it will be called). As you already know it will contain all five Gamera episodes: 302- GAMERA, 304- GAMERA VS. BARUGON, 308- GAMERA VS. GAOS, 312- GAMERA VS. GUIRON and 316- GAMERA VS. ZIGRA. It will be in a tin box. The street date is Aug. 2
The extras will be:
* So Happy Together: A Look Back at MST3K and Gamera
* Gamera Vs. The Chiodo Brothers
* Gamera Obscura: A Brief History by August Ragone (author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters)
* Original Japanese Trailers
* 5 limited edition mini-posters by artist Steve Vance
I am not even thinking about what ISN’T included, because this is just so awesome. ALL the MST’ed Gamera movies?! I couldn’t ask for more :)

I’m with mst3ktemple – maybe the “Look Back” featurette will be chock full o’ KTMA goodness!
Maybe.

The Chiodo Brothers are responsible for Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Critters, and Critters 2 and some of the effects in Team America World Police (F-Yeah!) and Elf. Why they are fighting Gamera in the special features I have no clue, but I hope that maybe the “VS” implies a debate of sorts, possibly on term limits or even bond measures. Or maybe it’s a look at the special effects in the Gamera movies and of the big turtle himself. Yeah, that last one. I hope it’s that one.

YES! Glad we finally have a release date for this. I’ve been dying for more info since the suprise Turkey Day announcement. Beings I’m a die hard kaiju fan and and the Gamera installments are some of my favorite MST3K episodes (especially Gamera vs Guiron) this is by far my most anticipated MST3K set ever. I’m also psyched about the Gamera retrospective by August Ragone. I just wish we didn’t have to wait three more months, I was hoping that the release would be closer to early June or July. Oh well, all I ask is that the video and audio on the masters are still in great shape and don’t have any Lost Continent style defects to them. Ditto that the KTMA eps would’ve been fantastic extras. And if Gamera can happen, anything theoretically can, bring on Time of the Apes and Fugitive Alien won’t you?

I’m going to order this when it comes out. Just in case the set goes the way of the Rhino Godzilla…

..and because I love Gamera too, of course.
But not Kenny. No, not–Kenny.

Meh. I’ll only be buying this set so that I can continue to boast of owning every MST3K DVD. As I’ve stated before, the Gamera episodes all seem the same to me. After the first hour, I lose interest. All five together total 7 1/2 hours that blurs together into what is (in my opinion) one long, uninteresting episode. If you count “Gorgo” with them (as I do), then it turns into 9 hours of some of the most monotonous non-Season 1 MST3K out there.
But to each his own.

Five Gamera MST eps AND August Ragone?! This is gonna rule!

That Gamera toy is pretty nifty, but if you’re an action figure afficionado like myself (What? Don’t look at me like that. We obsess over a puppet show.), there’s also this super-poseable Gamera by Revoltech with interchangeable parts: http://www.amazon.com/Gamera-Revoltech-Poseable-Action-Figure/dp/B003DTLUF4
And when Revoltech says “super-poseable” they mean it. This thing’s more flexible than that Japanese guy in a rubber suit ever was.

A TIN box?!! Can you say Gamera figure?
This looks awesome! Especially eager to see the Chiodo Bros. featurette, since I like their movie “Killer Klowns from Outer Space.”

I suppose the MST Hour wraps could end up as an Easter Egg.

Again They can’t sell a Gamera Action figure because they don’t liscence the merchendising rights. Daiei owns the rights to the action figures and they aren’t going to sell them to shout.

YES!!!!! People, we have a release date!!!!!

Yeah, it was a miracle enough they were able to bypass Daiei and get these episodes back, I’m amazed some folks think Shout would risk riling them by including their own Gamera figure which would give them a possibly disputable reason in their eyes to attempt to block the set.

Hey, who does that guy think he is?

FRANK AND TRACE DOING THE GAMERA SONG. I would get this set just to see that, as well as all the GAMERA songs.

Oh man, I’m so excited about this! My first episode ever was a Gamera movie. Not sure which one…now I’ll know for sure.

Thanks for the update Jordan. This set is already amazing and I really appreciate adding the MST Hours segments. Once again Shout! proves they are fans and that they get “us.”

Owning all five Gamera experiments in one box set: $59.99 (estimated)
Having them distributed by a company that initially forgot to include the MST Hour wraps but slips them in at the last minute when reminded by the fans: Priceless!

Long-time reader, first time poster. I just wanted to say that the MST Hour clips have always been among my favorite extras, believe it or not, so I’m glad they’re going back and adding them! This set is sounding great

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM BALLYHOO MOTION PICTURES: The Chiodo Brothers featurette is subtitled… “A LOOK BACK AT MEN-IN-SUIT SPECIAL EFFECTS”. The subtitle just couldn’t fit on the box, or press release. It’s a lot of fun… with a few surprises. Hope you guys enjoy!!!!

We should send Shout Factory a thank you gift. A fruit basket, maybe some cookies, something nice.

I honestly never really thought I’d see these come out commercially. And what a date! My husband and I met partially because of MST3K and that’s our wedding anniversary. Perfect.

My hat is off to the good folks at Shout! Factory. I don’t care so much about the wraps, but seriously — this kind of responsiveness shows true class.

Why is anyone at all surprised that there aren’t going to be any KTMA versions included in this set? I mean does anyone out there seriously think that any KTMA episodes will ever be released on DVD? Even though I’m a big fan of those episodes, and I would be absolutely thrilled to see any of them get an official DVD release, I still think it’s probably more likely that Osama Bin Laden would win a Tony award next year than us ever seeing any KTMA episodes on DVD.
Anyway this set is going to be awesomer than awesome, and the release date is perfect. Whatever birthday money I might get this year at least I now know where it will be going.

this is back to back all-Joel sets then right?

Cannot wait for this set. Finally! Oh and in case anyone missed it. MST3K: The Movie is now available for streaming on Netflix. Just came across it last night. Super!

Thanks Jordan for hearing us and adding the MST Hour wraps. While not THE most important thing in the set, MSTies tend to be completists and we don’t like knowing there are crumbs we’re missing. Thanks again.

Glad the MST hour wraps will be there. As for KTMA, never say never. When Shout Factory finally runs out of releasable episodes, Season 0 is suddenly going to look a lot better. ;)

Oh just let it go with the KTMA stuff already. Always with the passive-aggressive “thanks but why didn’t you give us this too? And are you going to screw up the masters again?” whenever Shout announces a release. How about “Thanks Shout, good job everybody!” for once.

I wasn’t expecting full KTMA episodes on the set (or any set) but WAS expecting there to be footage of the KTMA episodes in the “MST3K vs. Gamera” featurette. Why were they ‘not able to include’ this? Doesn’t make sense to me, it can’t be a rights issue…. Hmmmm….
I’m not saying this ’cause it ruins the set or anything, it’s an awesome set. I’m just curious, is all.

Gotta love Shout Factory. Everything they do seems to be informed by the fans and that means so much.
The episode selection has been off the charts good (Master Ninja! Gamera! Santa Claus!) and the care that’s gone into each set and ensuring that the fans are happy is truly appreciated.
Hooray for Shout!

One thing that must be made clear. BBI do not actually own any of those KTMA episodes. WU-CW currently holds the copyrights.

I have a serious man crush for Shout!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!! Im 32, if I live to 90 ( which I seriously doubt ) we will never see KTMA eps out for release on DVD. Thats why my KTMA fan copy DVDs are in a fire proof box ( along with my Rhino & Shout MST3K DVDs ).

Sounds like Shout is really going the extra mile on this set and Gamera v. Guiron was the first MST episode I ever saw so I am going to have to get this. I already have all the episodes in digital format but I like to support quality and this set will no doubt be better than what I have. Plus it will give me something new to get autographed next time I see CT.

The good news about this set just keeps getting better. I’m looking forward to it.
Astute readers may notice that the message at top from Shout! is not from Brian Ward as has usually been the case on these MST3K DVD sets. Mr. Ward stated recently at the Shout! Factory forum that he had to step away from MST3K for a while and turn it over to others. Thanks to Jordan Fields from providing an update.
A while back I had asked about why the “Turn Down Your Lights Where Applicable” intro from the early seasons of the show never appears on the DVDs. Brian Ward had said it wasn’t on the masters he’d been getting, but that he would try and include it on future releases where it had been in those episodes originally. I hope that turns out to be true. I was always fond of that little tone-setting opening joke and I’d like to have it on some of the commercial DVD releases. Thanks!

The only real “complaint”…if you would even call it that, about two Joel sets in a row is that this could limit Shout’s ability to do 2 Joel/2 Mike eps per set from here on out. Personally, I don’t mind that, but I know quite a few MSTies love that format.
Keep in mind that I have absolutely no facts to back up my point. But it’s on my mind all the same.

Oh, I get it! Gamera! Turtles! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

#95 It’s not a “problem” to me. But I would like
more Mike episodes. For one, I like the SciFi Channel
idea of story lines (even though Mike et. al. apparently
didn’t) and it would be nice to have more of them to make
story lines more coherent. And I personally think 5 japanese
monster movies back-to-back is a bit much. Better to have spaced
them out over a few years.

@99..You like the story lines better? And all this time I thought it was the movie and the riffs? Isn’t that like buying a Playboy for the articles? Also, you don’t HAVE to watch one Japanese monster movie back to back,do you? Or you could just not buy the ox sets you don’t want, right?? :-))
