Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Costume Worn by a Bot

Mr. B(ob) suggests:

Favorite costume worn by one of the robot pals in an episode. My favorite costume on a robot is the monkey mask Tom Servo is wearing during the Sandy Frank song. It makes me laugh every time I see it, every single time!?

Oh, no contest: Tom Servo as the candy striper. (Honorable mention: Crow as Willie the Waffle.)

What’s your pick?

I’ve always loved Crow “enjoying his new active lifestyle” with his “Technoweave” toupee, calf implants and hinder implants from “Death Stalker and the Warriors from Hell”.

I also like Servo’s “leggy” toaster pastry body in “Devil Doll”. “Caution, my filling may be hot!”

I liked Tom dressed up like Rambo in Teenage Werewolf. When he goes into the duct work to catch the face hugger alien and Crow bets Mike a 20 he’ll start crying in 30 seconds or less!

Tough choice but I’m gonna have to go with Tom’s Mountie outfit.

It’s been mention before, but Crow as a Bellarian. He makes a lovely woman.

And for Tom, I think the Batman costume in Zombie Nightmare is adorable.

I am slightly shocked Servo’s granny from The Touch of Satan hasn’t been mentioned. (that I could see…) That’s MY fave.

Crow as Jack Elam. Absolutely hilarious. Tom’s Fez is a favorite of mine which randomly showed up in different episodes.

It’s hard to choose, because Servo was adorable in every single costume. The “Touch of Satan” grandma, the Mountie…the list goes on and on.

Not sure if this counts as a costume, but when Tom Servo wears the Howdy-Doody head…..well, that is just awesome in the good ol’ fashioned nightmare fuel kind of way. It is truely terrifying. Crows reaction is apt.

(What ep is that in? I know it’s a Mike ep, but the specifics escape me off the top of my head).

Crows costume from The Girl In Gold Boots. Now I know we only saw Mike wearing it on his head when it was tossed at him. But the mind reels just thinking about just how HOT Crow looked in it. Tom did say shake your peach cobbler baby. Let us not forget those gold boots OH MY MY MY THOSE GOLD BOOTS. I gotta go take a cold shower now.

This is a funny topic. So many choices.

I’m gonna go with Crow dressed as the Solarite from Phantom Planet. As Crow put it so eloquently, “This is a dam good costume!”.

Since I watched “Being From Another Planet” today, I’ll go with Tom and Crow wrapped in toilet paper, mimicking the “mummy” in the movie. For some reason Crow had curlers in his hair.

I’d like to leave one for every robot:

Tom: Dressed like Nastinka (sp?) from “Jack Frost” always makes me laugh, especially as he’s trying to get Mike and Crow to guess just who he’s trying to impersonate.

Crow: As Jack Elam from “The Girl in Lovers Lane”, I think he impersonated the lazy-eyed character actor as well as any robot with a bowling pin for a beak could!

Gypsy: Not too many choices for her, but I always loved how she wore Joel’s Master-inspired costume in the closing host segment of “Manos”, as she tries to mimic the music from the all-ladies fight scene Crow and Tom are recreating. It almost reminds me of a young daughter trying to get her dad’s attention by wearing his clothes. (I know, that sounds strange considering she’s a robot, but that’s what I thought when I first saw it!)

I thought this would be boring because for me their outfits are quite secondary, just something extra besides the riffing and skits.
But I have to admit from reading the replies that the many ones mentioned are pretty funny when I think back on them.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned the Skull that Crow dressed as in ‘The Screaming Skull’ when Mike clubbed his brains out. It was pretty cool looking.

Aso, I don’t know if surgical enhancements count, but there’s Crow with the tiny nose job from ‘Parts: The Clonus Horror’…and for another thing that would probably not qualify, Mike as a tiny robot was pretty cool too.
    “Dont push, don’t push!”

I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet: Servo dressed as a Brownie against Crow and Mike as Boy Scouts. And Servo in that ball gown (or whatever that was) he wore for Pearl’s really under-attended ball. For Crow: the scarf when he was “directing” “Earth vs. Soup” and his Mary Tyler Moore costume. Looked pretty good.

I’ve always loved it whenever Gypsy had her big red lips on.

I also loved the giant sized mentally challenged version of Tom Servo from “High School Bigshot”. I know it’s not really a costume, but I think it fits well enough into that category for the sake of the discussion.

For Crow I absolutely LOVE his Jack Elam costume from “The Girl in Lovers Lane”. It’s definitely the funniest get-up that crow ever got into, and I love how there really is no pay-off for the sketch except his wonderful costume. I die every time he comes on and just goes “I’m Jack Elam! ehhhhhhhh….”

People keep mentioning costumes for every bot BUT they keep forgetting one! So I’m going to put forth what I believe is the ONLY bit where you see — CAMBOT — in “costume” — the scopes bit in 203 – Jungle Goddess.

Love all the other suggestions so far — the Sir Thomas Neville Smythe Delta Maiden is definitely my favorite Servo costume, I’m going to second “Gypsy Rose ME” from 422 – The Day the Earth Froze, and my favorite Crow costume hasn’t been mentioned yet: From episode 803 – The Mole People: Crow as the Space Child — if only for the line “So does all-powerful have to mean over-budget?”

That was in The Violent Years and that would get my vote for Servo. “When you want to get ahead, get a head!”

As for Crow, I also have say his Jack Elam was incredibly funny.

For Servo, I go with the dictator outfit he wears when he is made ruler over Mike and Crow in the host segment of “Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders.” Those damn fire ants ruined everything. For Crow, most definitely the Bellarian getup from “Space Mutiny” takes the cake.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned robot Mike from Prince of Space. “I’m sorry Mike, we only take orders from Lester” is a great putdown from Crow.

  28. Trilaan says:

Crow as a the soup salesman, trying to listen in on their discussion of how to punish him for cheating. The costume, plus Mike’s totally enchanting response equals Gold. From The Wild Wild World of Batwoman episode.

Tom Servo as a squirrel during the table cloth re-enactment host segment from The Sword and the Dragon episode.

WHY is there no costume list in Ward E yet?

Definitely, the United Servo Academy Band (or whatever he, they, called it).

Honorable mention: The hillbilly look in “The Amazing Transparent Man” (I think). Don’t give Mikey the llama!!

Can’t in all honesty claim the Fabio look was any favorite. ‘bots really shouldn’t have muscles… :-)

I would have to say it was Crow dressed up as a screaming skull in, what else?.., THE SCREAMING SKULL. Seeing Mike go at him with a bat was one of the funnier skits in the SciFi (Yes, I said SciFi, Not SyFy) era.

Glad to see my weekend discussion topic suggestion is popular. Here are some of my other favorite robot pal costumes besides Tom’s monkey mask during the Sandy Frank song:
    * The fashion show costumes from Teenagers From Outer Space. They also still make me laugh out loud even after dozens of viewings.
    * Girl backup singer costumes from Pod People. That whole sketch slays me to this day. “Bees on pie, burning rubber tires!” The costumes add to the fun.
    * Candy Striper Tom is also a really good one as Sampo said at top.
    * The Gameradamerung costumes. A brief but hilarious sketch.
    * When Joel gives Tom and Crow monstrous arms during a monster movie or alternate muscular arms during a Hercules movie. Great comedy writing in both of those sketches enhanced by the puppet alterations.
    * Mangled Crow. The many times Crow ends up bashed, burned, cut up a bit, whatever, it’s always comedy gold.
    * United Servo Academy Tom(s)

The mask that Tom wore for re-enactment of the practical joke scene from Track of the Moon Beast. Aaaah.
You see Kathy Nolan borrowed the mask from the Indian Museum for some mood shots and she saw whats-his-name there and it was her bright idea to play a practical joke…… bird calls? That’s a talent!

So many good responses, so I’m gonna go with when they dressed up on Robot Holocaust, wearing the dead animals that littered the countryside, or as Crow put it, “Roadkill!” Yeah, the lines are better than the costumes, “Servo the Bloodletter, Servo the Chirping Hellbeast..” and when Joel says he felt like they were King Vitamin miscast in a Sonny and Cher video. Poor Geekor..

Everyone has said Crow as Jack Elam and a Bellarien (sic)
and Hot Crow in gold boots. Love them all.
Also love Crow’s ‘British’ teeth in Devil Doll.
BUT, I really would’ve liked to seen the skinny sociopathic janitor and wounded baby unicorn costumes they promised. :)

And then there are the jester costumes in Magic Voyage of Sinbad. Awesomely funny costumes and sketch. If I recall there’s jester’s wand that Crow carries with a mini version of himself. Fantastic.

  49. Sharktopus says:

Crow as Jack Elam is easily the funniest part of the otherwise ultra-depressing Girl In Lovers’ Lane. I kinda wish Crow hadn’t made a point of saying who he was – it was perfectly clear – and it would’ve made Joel and Tom’s apathy towards it that much funnier.

Best group costume – Crow and Tom as Dr F and Frank. Hilarious, especially Trace as Crow as Dr F. (And Trace as Dr F as Crow.) And Frank suffocating. And Tom’s adorable spitcurl… MST3k was so much more than just movie riffing, otherwise these character-based bits would never have worked.
