Weekend Discussion Threads: Joel/Mike Double Features

Alert reader Mike in Portland writes:

At our MST3K meetup group, we run a double feature each time, with one Joel episode and one Mike episode. We’ve done combos like Girls Town/Manos, and we just saw Godzilla vs. Megalon/Devil Fish. What episodes would go together well in a double feature? Remember, there must be one Joel episode and one Mike episode.

For me, I’d have to go with Bride of the Monster/The Violent Years. Plenty of Ed Wood to go around!

What’s your pick?

I ws thinking ’60s criminal sociopaths with “The Wild Rebels”/”Girl In Gold Boots”.

Also battle of the sequels with “War of the Colossal Beast”/”Revenge of the Creature”.

Finally, dangerous women on the loose with “Swamp Diamonds”/”Angels’ Revenge”.

I am enjoying this discussion- simple and compact. Keep ’em coming!

It’s easy enough (obviously so, from all the responses already) to think of a “Joel episode” and then thematically link a “Mike episode” to it. My first thought was of “Cold War agit-prop” with “Rocket Attack USA” and “Invasion USA,” but then I noticed someone else has already mentioned it.

I love these combos! The Ed Wood, Coleman Francis, Santa Claus and Joe Don Baker combos are truly inspired. I especially love the Joe Don Baker one because Mike refers to Joel’s exit, and I think it links the two episodes beautifully.

The League for Psychotic Children reminds you to surround yourself with annoying, shrill-voiced children. Thus, we are proud to present a double feature of Godzilla vs Megalon and Invasion of the Neptune Men.

Beast of Yucca Flats and The Unearthly (Tor Johnson double feature!! Time for Awesomeness)

For the downer portion Sidehackers and Girl in Gold Boots.

Catalina Caper and Village of the Giants (Jim Begg double feature.)

For rapidly physically deteriorating guys The Indestructable Man and the Incredible Melting Man.

One last Catalina Caper, for those feel good beach movies Catalina Caper and Alien from L.A. (or is it feel dull surprise???)

I’d go with two movies within the double features that have some strong connection (actors, themes, genre) between them such as:

    Mitchell and Final Justice

The Day the Earth Froze/The Magic Voyage of Sinbad and The Sword and the Dragon/Jack Frost (either way, pick your choice)

Warrior of the Lost World/Escape 2000

Probably been posted before, but some good double bills would be,

SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS/ Santa Claus – Christmas fun

THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE/ JACK FROST – movies from the top of the world

IT CONQUERED THE WORLD / BEGINNING OF THE END – Hello, I’m Peter Graves

THE BLACK SCORPION / BEGINNING OF THE END – Big bugs attack!

MOON ZERO TWO/ 12 TO THE MOON – Ah, when the moon was a destination

THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN/ VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS – I’m huge

UNTAMED YOUTH/ THE SINISTER URGE – Ah, the trials of the young.

EARTH VS. THE SPIDER/ THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION – “Giant” actually makes you appreciate how good “Earth” is.

    A good weekend’s entertainemnt.

Manos: The Hands of Fate/The Final Sacrifice (both deal with evil cults in outskirt/rural locations)

Godzilla vs. Megalon/Gorgo (both deal with giant lizards)

Godzilla vs/ Megalon/Prince of Space (both Japanese kids’ movies)

Mitchell/Final Justice (Do I need to say more?)

  19. Black Scorpion and Deadly Mantis. Big Bugs, one from Season One and one from the Sc-Fi years.

Warrior of the Lost World and Escape 2000. Post apocalypse fun.

Castle of Fu Manchu and Hamlet. If you can make it through this you are REALLY a hardcore MST fan!

Master Ninja I and San Francisco International. Failed TV pilots. Do a shot for every B-movie actor you can name for more fun.

Robot Holocaust and Werewolf. Try to decipher the bad accents of the hot chicks.

    My last suggestion will start with a short and a main feature. Neither main feature has a short so this should work nicely;

    J&TB- SPEECH: USING YOUR VOICE

    M&TB-SPEECH: PLATFORM POSTURE AND APPEARANCE

I like this pairing because the first speech short is about the voice while the other is about all else in public yapping.

    J&TB-THE MAGIC SWORD

M&TB-DEATHSTALKER AND THE WARRIORS FROM HELL

I like this pairing because they both involve reconstituted warriors. They more or else look like the same bunch.

  27. Brainchild @ 14 – Great Mamie Van Doren idea!

thedumpster @ 26 – That depressing pair may be too much. Sometimes I can’t even watch High School Bigshot!

Green Switch @ 36 – WOW! Probably two of my favorite episodes.

Failed shows spliced into a movie:

Master Ninja II and Riding With Death. Why Master Ninja II and not Master Ninja I? Because Master Ninja II has a string of Crypt Keeper puns performed by Crow during a fight in a cemetery.

How about a Peter graves one? It Conquered the World with Clonus.

In the real world: these were my four episodes from last night:

    Giant Gila Monster
    Terror from the year 5000
    Night of the Blood Beast
    Swamp Diamonds

All the pieces fit together nicely.

#413 Manhunt in Space and 820 Space Mutiny – Both deal with rebel rocketeers.

“Mighty Jack” / “The Wild Wild World of Batwoman” – for an evening of complete befuddlement and disorientation
“Cave Dwellers” / “Outlaw” – terrible Italian Conan ripoffs from the 80s
“Attack of the Giant Leeches” / “Boggy Creek II” – for a taste of the South

  33. As usual, I’m late to the party. Thanks for using this idea, Sampo. It’ll save us a lot of trouble, because we can just print out this discussion and have our list.

It’s a fun game to play, though, and we’ve enjoyed putting the combos together. Some of them are obvious – the two Santa movies at Christmas, for example. I think we also considered a Mamie Van Doren double feature.

One thing we’ve tried to avoid is having two movies that are too hard to get through. Castle of Fu Manchu / Hamlet is a great endurance test, but it might be a little much to get through. We might do something like pair Fu Manchu with another Harry Alan Towers movie, like Outlaw of Gor. Goes down a little easier.

Many of these are good ideas, but I think my favorite is Robot Holocaust / Werewolf – the battle of the indecipherable accents.

Oh, how about a Native American themed pairing of “Aztec Mummy” and “Werewolf”?

  35. rcfagnan says:

Or, to go the lycanthrope route, how about “Mad Monster” with either “I Was A Teenage Werewolf” (until that summer of passion when I became a man) or “Werewolf?” “Giant Leeches” with “Dr. Z” for that Floridian flavor? “Giant Gila Monster” and “Giant Spider Invasion”? Or, for that matter, “Monster A-Go-Go” and Giant Spider Invasion!” In my suggestions, I’ve tried to stick with eps that have been released to dvd/video to ensure that others can use them, but there have been some really good unreleased combos. I love the Ben Murphy double feature idea just ’cause being Ben Murphy has its advantages, such as being Ben Murphy.

  36. Joe Klemm says:

@ 25 Puma Man would probably be the better choice for a double feature with Warrior of the Lost World, as they both featue Donald Pleasence as the villain.

A few ideas of my own (which haven’t gotten mentioned yet):
-Robot Monster/Revenge of the Creature (bad movies in 3D!!!)
-The Crawling Hand/The Giant Spider Invasion (Sheriff Jonas Grumby)
-Lost Continent/Zombie Nightmare (Joker vs. Batman in the the battle of bad movies)
-Cave Dwellers/Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (Sequels to films trying to capitalize on the “barbarian” genre of the 1980’s)
-War of the Colossal Beast/Squirm (Mr. B Natural vs. Coily in a battle to see who’s the most evil “magical” character in a short)

Lost Continent & Herculese Against the Moon Men. Which is deeper hurting.
The Beast of Yucca Flats & Manos. Dubbing that makes Japanese movies look competent.
Prince of Space & Invasion of the Neptune Men. Are they really two different movies?
Giant Spider Invasion & Angel’s Revenge. Break out your Alan Hale action figure!!

  38. Definitely Cave Dwellers and Puma Man: Two movies where the sidekicks do far more work than the heroes.

  39. What if you base it on the host segments, for example:

Manos and Danger! Death Ray! – Torgo appears in each episode

Firemaidens from Outer Space and 12 to the Moon. Visitors to the SOL (Timmy and Nuveena) cause havoc.

Last of the Wild Horses and Time Chasers – Alternate universe stories mean new characters in the Theater: Frank and Clayton in Last of the Wild Horses and Mike’s older brother, Eddie, in Time Chasers.

Joe Klemm @ 86 – Great Alan Hale Jr. idea! Wish I had thought of that.

Matt @ 87 – rock climbing vs sandstorm! Good one!

One more for me, with no theme between the two episodes, they are simply great episodes (well, in my humble opinion):

    1. “Cave Dwellers”/”Quest of the Delta Knights”.
    2. “Godzilla vs. Megalon”/”Giant Spider Invasion”.
    3. “Manos: Hands of Fate”/”Skydivers”.
    4. “Eegah!”/”The Wild, Wild World of Batwoman”.

    Thanks for reading: See ya!
