Weekend Discussion Thread: Top 5 “Actual Songs from the Actual Movies”

Somebody using the screen name “king of grief” suggested a thread about favorite actual songs from the actual movies. Good idea, King! You can pick any musical moment you want, but I’m trying to stick to those moments where the movie grinds to halt so somebody can do a complete number. They can be your favorite for any reason.

(By the way, if you have a suggestion for a future weekend discussion thread, I’d love to hear it.)

Here’s mine, in episode order:
• “Cotton Picker” from episode 112- UNTAMED YOUTH. Eddie Cochran, baby. Wow!
• “Scuba Party” from episode 204- CATALINA CAPER. Little Richard, hopped up on goofballs though he may be, is still Little Richard.
• “Wait’ll I Get You Home” from episode 307- DADDY-O. Dick Contino romances Lou Reed from the Transformer album cover. Mwah!
• “”The House on Brownsville Road”” from episode 506- EEGAH! It’s a cabbage patch Elvis! Tequila!
• “Stratosphere Boogie” from episode 609- THE SKY DIVERS. Nashville guitar great Jimmy Bryant livens up this Coleman Francis turd with one of his best songs. George Herman Ruth on guitar!

Least favorite: “Where Can You Be?” from episode 507 – I ACCUSE MY PARENTS. After “Are You Happy in Your Work,” it just feels gratuitous.

What are yours?

I would like to add “It’s All That I Need You For” by The Birds. That song rocks.

And You can’t forget: “Hiro hito Gamera” (or whatever they’re singing) a.k.a. “Gamera is the Friend of All Children”!

Has anyone mentioned the repetitive music in the dance scene from “Creeping Terror”? Classic stuff.

I like the opening theme to Catlina Caper-“Never, ever say Goodbye” I guess it’s called.
I really enjoyed “Hooray for Santa (pronounced Santy) Claus”. The instrumental music from the Fugitive Alien flicks that becomes “He tried to Kill me with a forklift” as sung by Joel and the bots.

Awww, so I’m the only one who likes the Beau Brummels from Village of the Giants? Come on, “When It Comes To Your Love” and “Woman” were pretty good. I actually found “Woman” on a cassette tape called “The Best of the Beau Brummels” at a Big Lots. I’m not kidding. It’s one of my odder possessions.

    Also enjoyed:
“Fish Picker” from Hobgoblins. Bad 80’s music forever!

The opening theme from Operation Double 007. Hey, it was almost a James Bond theme. And I happen to like those.

That other song from Pod People. You know, the one where they’re driving along in the trailer and the guy singing sounds like Ringo Starr? I can’t tell what they’re singing, but it sure sounds catchy!

Gamera playing his own theme song on Zigra’s spine in Gamera vs. Zigra. Come on, you have to admit that was awesome.

  6. Wow, looks like I’ve got a hit on my hands! Many of my favorites (“Rock Candy Baby”, the music of Eegah) and guilty pleasures (“Hear the Engines Roll Now”, “Ha’ So, Don’t Run”) have already been duly noted, so I’m left to add “Losing My Baby/Dignity” from The Hellcats. There’s a soundtrack album (EP?) that should exist if it doesn’t already. (No takers on “Shine Your Love” from Angels’ Revenge? I’m not surprised.)

Speaking of which, has anyone ever come across a copy of “Yipe Stripes” on the RCA Victor label? I tried a Google search to no avail. It doesn’t seem plausible that they could get away with namechecking RCA even in such a barrel-scraper of a movie. (On a related note, I have Nipper and Chipper dolls posed in front of the speakers of our living room stereo…and they’re waiting to hear “Yipe Stripes”!)

Thank you, Sampo, for using my suggestion, and tanks to all youse guise for jumping in!

I loved Pigstinker (or whatever the name was) from Hobgoblins
Two of the danceable tracks from Gold Boots
Sargasim (opening credits to Dr. Z)
Background rock music to the bar-fight scene in Final Justice (“lookout! Hes got an inner tube!!”)

Songs that aren’t bad, from really bad movies:

Whatever that song from “Monster-A-Go Go” is, it ain’t bad for trashy, surfer rock. It’s about 10 years out of style, but oh well.

The Wiggle-Wobble song from the Del Airs. The MST guys were right, they weren’t bad and if they were playing at my beach party in the 60s I’d be impressed.

Without thinking too hard I’ll say, and I know I will have left some good ones out,
    These:

    1. “Deep Deep Down” by Ennio Morricone from Danger: Diabolik

    2. The opening, closing, and all the in-between music from # 424 – Manos The Hands of Fate.

    3. the “Buppa-duppa-dada” music from # 620 –
    Danger: Death Ray.

    4. “Wild Rebels” from # 207 – Wild Rebels.

    5. “Night Train to Mundo Fine” from # 619 – Red Zone Cuba

    My next 5 would have to include the odd & disturbing score from # 908 – The Touch of Satan;
    “She loves Me” by Ennio Morricone from # 508 – Operation Double 007;
and that particular piece of music from # 606 – The Creeping Terror which mike played while showing off his stereo system.

Oh, and the music from # 906a – Century 21 Calling.

My faves-‘Are You Happpy In Your Work’ from IAMP, the Jimmy Bryant performances from Skydivers, the opening theme to ‘Danger! Death Ray,'(by the Doodletown Pipers!) ‘Fish Picker’ from Hobgoblins, and ‘California Lady’ from Moon Beast.

Least fave-Any of the music from Eegah, except for the opening theme(I’m an Eegafied man!)

If we’re talking actual “good” songs, “Wish it Were Me” by the Platters would win, hands down.

Also, any of the songs from the Russo-Finnish movies where people would just start dancing were fun, especially the underwater dance party from Sinbad.

I actually like that song from “Wild Rebels” that’s playing in the scene where Steve Alaimo is dancing with that girl in the bar, the one where Joel and the ‘bots keep saying, “My lunch goes bllaaagh.” I think the name of the band is the Birdwatchers, I’m not sure what the actual song title is. I also agree with the several previous posters, some of the instrumental music in “Sky Divers” is great! And- The Birds with Ron Wood were an excellent band!

I also like the metal tune playing in the coked-out dude’s car in “Soultaker,” the tune where they keep saying “We’re gonna rock! We’re gonna rock!” (which Mike, or one of the ‘bots I can’t remember, comments on).

The Jimmy Bryant guitar work from “SKYDIVERS” is definitely the most virtuostic musical preformance from any of the movies. WAY out of place in a Coleman Francis film!!??

I play jazz sax and flute, and when i heard this particular clip i absolutely HAD TO LOOK UP THE CAST and learned about “Speedy West” a.k.a. Jimmy Bryant. His playing is so strong it catches your ear if you’ve ever played guitar, not many people can play like that.

Here’s the youtube link to the song people are referencing. The guitar work is really good, comparable to Les Paul and ‘country’ with a whole lot of jazz and swing influence.

    (skydivers – part 8/10)

Song starts at: 1:50 and goes til about 3:50

as a side effect of watching many MST3K episodes, i’ve become VERY familiar with Mr. Albert Glasser’s composition style.

I’d have to vote his film-scores as among the worst. Always brassy, jarring and un-subtle and somehow boring and predictable at the same time. Anti-hits inclide “War of the Colossal Beast”, “Beginning of the End”, “The Magic Sword” , “King Dinosaur” and many others

Yes, absolutely, I bought it as soon as that came into print not too long ago.

For more wonderful soundtracks by Morricone, Lalo Schifrin and others, some of them limited print runs, check out http://www.screenarchives.com. There’s a new ORIGINAL Outer Limits soundtrack CD that just became available that is 3-discs and 3 hours long.

I want to add my LEAST favorite—

“I’m on th’air” by Jim Stafford (also “Thank ya sam”-(You’re welcome dork), both from Riding With Death.
I did like the beginning theme music from Riding With Death, however.

I can’t stand “Rock Candy Baby” from Daddyo, and I also loathe the song along the same lines from I Was a Teenage Werewolf.

“Pigsticker” was definitely not good, and I have a hard time even watching Hobgoblins due to the slimy 80’s imagery and feel.

“Shine Shine Shine your Love” from Angels Revenge is as bad as it gets too.

I agree about the song from Wild Rebels where theyre dancing as being pretty good. I kinda wished the guys would have stopped belching so I could hear the song.

As for future discussions how about “Favorite cameo from an actor that actually went on to do good work”. Clint Eastwood in Revenge of the Creature being the most obvious example. Maybe a shorter title would work better though.

  22. Jeff Q says:

There are so very many great songs in these shows, it’s hard to choose favorites. But “Catalina Caper” gets my vote for most overall musically enjoyable:

“Never Steal Anything Wet” — One of those tunes you just can’t get out of your head, in a good way (at least for the first half-hour).

Little Richard, “Scuba Party” — ‘Nuff said about this already.

The Cascades, “There’s a New World Just Opening for Me” — There’s a concept that’s called “harmony” all right, Tom Servo, but it’s considerably more varied than you seem to think. This is like a stripped-down Association song, something a little shy of true psychedelia, but enjoyable enough. (That doesn’t make the MST commentary any less hilarious!)

Carol Connors, “The Book of Love” — Very catchy tune, fun teen-romance lyrics, and Carol makes for great eye candy performing it. (She wrote it, by the way.) This is my favorite of the bunch, so much so that I ripped it from the un-MSTied side of my Vol. 1 DVD and added it to my music collection. (Come and get me, RIAA!)

The incidental go-go music was fun, too. Not to mention the bonus of Tom’s fantastic “Creepy Girl” song! It’s a total music fest.

    S A N T A C L A U S, Hooray for Santy Claus!
Has always left a warm fuzzy place for me. The Hellcats and Sidhackers theme as well as the theme to Wild Rebels appeal to my rebelous side. I like the Cantalina Caper songs as well because they remind me of a poor man’s Frankie and Annette. The Haunting Torgo theme may not be the best music in the world but it has staying power. My My Michell. Face there are just to many gems to list.

And I would actually pay good money for a copy of “Are you happy in your work”.

Plus totally check out Arch Hall Jr’s CD’s!

“Are you happy in your work?” I sing this every day of my life. People want to confine me to a rubber room…

Also like Wild Rebels theme, and the song from the Beau Brummels in “Village of the Giants” plus the ditty in “I was a Teenage werewolf”, finally- the theme from Diabolik.

Other possible discussions for the weekends:

    1. Best Gypsy Moments- I know there would be a million with the other bots, but Gypsy moments are sometimes few and far between.

    2. Best Mike Nelson Impressions

    3. Most Stomach-Churning/Disgusting moments in the movies

    4. Best Villains and Best inventions (as stated previously but I like both of these).

Most songs from Zombie Nightmare. Hard rocking tunes which I like.

Most Italian movies had funky music.

Operation Double 007, Danger!! Death Ray and Danger: Diabolik all had good music.

My favorite from Diabolik is the scuba music when lifting the gold tank from the ocean. listening to it now, in fact!

Catalina Caper: “The Book of Love”

    Teenage Strangler: “Yipes Stripes”

Santa Claus: “Hooray for Santy Claus”

The Mitchell Theme (My My My My Mitchell)

Untamed Youth: the Calypso song Mamie Van Doren sings at the end (according to Wikipedia, because of that film, she was the first woman to sing a rock and roll song in a movie musical.)

The theme song from Girls Town, for some inexplicable reason.

    Anything by Dick Contino (Daddy-O)

  37. Dyne says:

Can never get to these until after the weekend, but are still fun.

    My favorites:
    Jimmy Bryant’s songs in Skydivers.
“Night Train to Mundo Fine” – My singing voice is a deep as John’s, so I can sing it pretty well.
“Scuba Party” – I like Little Richard’s voice, my parents can’t stand him.
The songs in I Accuse My Parents – The reason being Mary Beth Hughes’ voice more than the actual songs.
The soundtrack for Outlaw of Gor.

    As for Weekend Thread suggestions:
-Favorite names given to Dave Ryder on Space Mutiny
-Favorite riff involving making fun of the hero of the given film (ie: Arch Hall Jr. being a “cyst with teeth and hair”)
-Favorite dance number from an MSTed movie.
-Favorite running gag for any given episode (ie: Jimmy’s birthday being every day in I Accuse my Parents)
-Favorite Lord of the Rings references throughout the series.
-Favorite riff poking fun at a political figure.
-Favorite movie lines that are re-used as riffs in later episodes (“Watch out for snakes!”)
-Favorite major continuity errors pointed out by J/M+tB during the movies
-Favorite ways in which Dr. Forrester killed/maimed Frank.
-Favorite of Bobo’s moments of stupidity (that usually thwarted any of Pearl’s plans)
-Most mentally disturbing moments from the movies.
    -Favorite movie heroes.
    -Favorite movie villains.
-Favorite recurring actors in MSTed movies (Beverly Garland, anyone?).
-Favorite ways in which J/M+tB describe how a movie is breaking them. (“I want to hurt this movie but I can never hurt it the way it hurt me.)

I know it never really aired, but the theme song from “The Green Slime” (pilot) was really good in a bizarre, psuedo-psychedelic kind of way. If you want to hear it, here it is:

  40. Chemotheraputic says:

I guess I should note that “The Golden Turkey Album” features a lot of the songs being discussed here (including those marked with an asterisk below), and others that never got the MST3K treatment. It never got a CD release, but you can find the LP (or download an LP-rip) fairly easily.

    Personal Picks:

Worst: “She Left Me Lonely*” from “The Creeping Terror.” “Hooray For Santy Claus*” from “Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.” “You Better Run” from “Final Justice.” Amusing the first time around, nervegrinders thereafter.

Guilty Pleasures: “Shook Out Of Shape*” from “The Incredibly Strange Creatures.” “California Gravy (Add Flavor To My Meat)” from “Track Of The Moon Beast.” “She Rocks Whenever She Rocks” from “The Giant Gila Monster.”

Man, what a great topic! There are so many good songs in these bad/indifferent/great movies. My favorites are:

“World War II Boy” from Blood Waters of Dr. Z: It’s a tough choice, but this is probably my favorite song from MST3K. I chose it because I actually took the time to look for it. Sadly, I can’t find a place to download or buy it.

“Ace of Spades” and “C’Mon Let’s Go” from Zombie Nightmare: Great, great songs from an OK movie with a terrific soundtrack. I love it when Mike and the Bots try to leave the theater because they listen to Girlschool’s lyrics a little too closely.

“The Zombie Stomp” from Horror of Party Beach: Two words–MY SKULL!

“OK Connery” from Operation Double 007: You know, this song is begging to be covered by some all-female punk group. And what a cool song it is.

Worst songs: Anything from The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombie. That Lesley Bore comment was right on the money.

    Some suggestions for future discussions:

    -Favorite guest appearances (Mike Division)
    -Favorite guest appearances (Non-Mike Division)
-Most disgusting things you’ve seen in a MSTed movie (expanded from the ACEG)
    -Favorite invention (Joel/Mike Division)
    -Favorite invention (Mads Division)
    -Most inept yet likable movie
    -Most obscure riff

Props to Zombie Nightmare for getting “Ace of Spades” by Motorhead, although given Lemmy’s willingness to appear in Troma productions, is probably not all that surprising.

I actually have a 45 (remember those?) of “Kiss Kicker” by the Fontanelles. I also have Arch Hall Jr.’s CD and the Birds’ CD (although their song from Deadly Bees is only excerpted–no full version still exists, apparently). It is my goal to make a soundtrack of MST films for my own enjoyment.

The two most elusive tracks: Idiot Control Now and Are You Happy In Your Work. The latter surprises me, since it is an Evans/Livingston.

  45. Steve Vil says:

Okay, not because it’s a great song or anything but because of the hilarity that ensues because of it, the “dance” music in “The Creeping Terror” which causes Servo to declare, “If my deepest, darkest despair had choreography this would be it”.

    Hear the engines roar now

    Kiss kicker

    Zombie Stomp

No offense to the people who mentioned them, but “California Lady” and “Night Train To Mundo Fine” both annoy me. Actually, “Night Train” scares me a little.

I gotta agree about “World War II Boy” from Blood Waters of Dr. Z being good. I love that one.
I downloaded an excerpt of it from somewhere that I don’t remember, but it offered the rest of the song for sale. You just need to look harder, it’s out there. I wish I knew where I got it.
I wish the excerpt were longer too.

Everyone else has mentioned the good ones, so I’ll just throw in my two cents.

This isn’t really my favorite per se, but I thought it deserved an honorable mention for the fact that it actually figures into the plot: “Do You Want to Laugh or Cry?” from Girl in Gold Boots. As awful as its introduction into the plot (Three notes and the house band’s sold on it? Seriously?), Critter’s little proto-emo ditty is not only classically bad; in this setting it’s also significantly bad.

I also second whoever said “Favorite stingers”.
