Our old pal Luigi Bastardo at Blogcritics is the first out of the gate with a review, closely followed by our pal Brian Orndorf at DVD Talk.
Update: Nick Lyons at DVD Corneralso reviews the DVD. So does Janelle Vreeland at CollegeNews.com.
Just watched Alien Factor and laughed until it hurt. Signor Bastardo over there had a good point–the movie is pretty hilarious by itself. I especially liked the moment when the guy drops the metal gas can in the snow and it goes “CLONK” like it fell on a hard floor.
And here’s another plug for EZTakes–having a nice DVD label or case isn’t a big deal to me, so there’s pretty much no downside. The base price is cheaper, no shipping charge, no waiting around for shipping… it’s got it all.

#48 & 49 – Okay, try driving a “measley hour” in bad city traffic, going into shady neighborhoods, and having to find a safe place to stash your car without being gouged. THAT’S what the Philly experience is like. There’s plenty of good venues in SJ, but heaven forbid they actually get some business. Let’s give to the overpriced, overcrowded places instead! I’m getting really sick of all shows, not just CT, ignoring these perfectly fine places to perform in SJ in favor of college-kid traps or skeevy cities in Philly & Joisey.
And if you’re going by plane to catch a show, you’re not fannier-than-thou. You’re just stupid with your money. Not everyone’s that spendy.

#52. I’m from South Jersey, so spare me the drama and hyperbole, ’cause I know better.

Okay, time to stir the pot. Whether you like live or studio, here’s my question: Why was the Rifftrax live disc of Plan 9 such a better show? Great sing-a-longs, silly (stupid) commercials, and a short! Why doesn’t CT throw in some of these to lessen the pain?

Okay, I’m going to chime in for a second time on this one. As I posted earlier (#41), I sort of knew I’d like this better on repeat viewings, and I do indeed. And I take back what I said about “riff density.” In fact, they let this movie breathe quite a lot compared to most offerings, because (as several others have pointed out), it’s so kooky on its own.
As for the “South Jersey” posters above, I’m from North Jersey and it easily takes me as long to get to Philadelphia or Princeton as it would take you to do likewise. I could see them in NYC but the tickets are twice the price and it costs a lot to get there and everything else that happens in the course of a night out. I agree the Trocadero is in a somewhat shady stretch of Philly, and my buddie did say the parking lot he used was a bit scarey after the show.
But Princeton? Don’t make me laugh. Or, if you’re in CT, please DO make me laugh. ‘Cause I’ll be there with bells on. Whatever that means.
But seriously, SJ residents, they’re just not gonna do a show in Red Bank, Cape May, AC, or Vineland. Ain’t gonna happen, and not because they have it out for you. Well, maybe AC, but it’s not the sort of town that pulls the MST3K crowd, is it? A bit iffy I’d think, ’cause it’s really far for the NYC crowd, and the Philadelphia crowd — well, they have Philadelphia.

A bit of a slow start but tons of laughs in the new Alien Factor DVD. For those of you comparing it less favorably to East Meets Watts, I contend that EMW is actually a better movie on its own than Alien Factor and is therefore easier to digest as a piece of…entertainment. Let’s face it, Alien Factor is very nearly Manos bad. High praise to the CT crew for having the versatility to produce intelligent comedy from such diverse source elements.

It’s good so far, I only got to watch some of it late last night. There were a few morons in the audience, laughing very loudly even though there was nothing funny happening on the screen nor was there any riffing. :???:

#53 – Good for you. I hope someone breaks into YOUR car and leaves you stranded after dark in the city. You deserve it.

I finished watching The Alien Factor and it was good. It’s more proof of my theory that the newer bad movies are funnier than older ones. I’m trying to figure at what level of “bad” this movie is. The Alien Factor is like a cheaper version of Laserblast. I think alien costumes are pretty good looking, so that puts it above an Ed Wood movie, but it’s also worse than an Ed Wood movie.

Alien Factor was very funny. My favorite MST3K movies were always the goofy 70s ones with bell bottoms, giant pointy collars, huge cars, long hair on guys, etc., and this movie fits right in there. The Titans have never been where I live (Indianapolis – hint!) sob, sob, so I have nothing to compare this with. I liked it better than East meets Watts, for whatever that’s worth.

I have to say Alien Factor was funny as hell and I did not even notice the audience very much. It also may be one of the worst made movies they have ever done and that’s saying something. I like CT a little better than the average Riff Track. I think it is a question of volume, RiffTrax end up recycling or cloning a lot of their gags, while CT only do a few a year and are fresher for it. As for live acts, I prefer not having folk singers, fake commercials, etc., just the main act. Not to bash RiffTrax, they support my habit ably and more regularly, but the rarity of CT releases make me anticipate them more.

I had to stop the movie several times to catch my breath. It was that funny. I can’t believe MST missed this one. It’s a perfect fit. The 1970s were cheesier than anybody back then could have imagined.

I’ve watched it 1 1/2 times now; the first time I was laughing so hard I missed a lot of the riffs! It doesn’t get much better than that.
One thing I’m finding interesting about the live DVDs is that, after performing a movie a few times, they know which parts of the film are so ridiculous they don’t need any commentary; the fact that there were at least 2 scenes where they let the movie provoke its own laughs was very refreshing; it brought us, the audience, even further in on the joke.
And I like seeing their faces and reactions; the studio DVD silhouettes get very claustrophobic when there’s no break from them. And the “storyline” they were unfolding in the studio series? Annoying as hell.

“I like when obnoxious fans laugh and applaud and I can’t hear the jokes as well as when they do the studio DVDs”
Really? You can’t hear the jokes over the audience? Wow, don’t ever go to a rock concert then…
I got my copy yesterday and laughed until it hurt. I watched it two more times after that. I also watched the preview for “East Meets Watts” about 10 times and can’t wait to get it (funny story- by the time I had the money for East Meets Watts, Alien Factor had come out and I had to choose).
Now it’s time to march on Poland!

Okay, I’ll admit when I’m wrong. I was one of the “anti-live” folks….but after watching “Alien Factor” last night, I have to say the live audience did not affect my viewing pleasure. This is by far the BEST DVD CT has put out. I got some genuine belly laughs with this one, and for me it ranks right up there with some of my favorite MST3K eps.
While I won’t say they should go live for every release….I’ll jump into the camp that states “Live or Studio..who cares” just keep ’em coming.

@50:
I agree about the surprisingly poor graphic design, but I put everything in DiscSox, so it’s not a storage issue.
I too went to a live show, cash in hand, and was surprised that I would cost me less to buy the DVDs online, even after shipping. I’ll probably wait for the next sale.
But when it comes down to it, I’m a collector of manufactured “tangible” media, and I can’t bring myself to paying almost the same for a download, yet. For example, I wouldn’t have been able to sell Manos when Rhino did the Essentials upgrade, if we were talking downloads.
