Weekend Discussion Thread: Deleted Scenes

Alert reader Andrew writes:

So that we could enjoy host segs and shorts, MST3K often had to remove scenes from a target movie so that they could cram everything into two hours. I’d like to know if any Msties have seen any unMstied movies and what kind of scenes they cut.
For instance, in “It Lives by Night”, they cut a scene of the sheriff escorting Kathy back to her motel room and trying to kiss her. A very icky scene indeed, but it adds a bit of meaning to Mike’s riff which claims the sheriff is a pervert…
In “Warrior of the Lost World”, MST shows Nastasia shooting Prossor once, but she actually plugs him five or six times, and point blank in the head to boot!
In “Mitchell” they skip over Mitch killing John Saxon!
I hate that I know all of these.

Here’s another one: in episode 704 – THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN: Just before that confusing moment in which Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith is seen sobbing in a police car and a photographer is taking pictures of everything in sight, they cut a scene in which the photographer gets the her to pose and bounce around, then forcibly removes her top. She starts hitting him as he continues to take pictures, and then trips over the Bill-Gates-look-alike corpse.
Anybody know any others?

@20: Hey, way to kick ass and take names, Persis! I wish they had included that, even though they would have had to censor the profanity. Would’ve been a nice moment for us, not to mention for J&TB, to cheer before Megaweapon even gets introduced.

Speaking of The Agony Booth, they also revealed an edit in “The Pumaman” that makes a later scene in the movie make more sense. In the MST version, when Tony is using his teleportation power, he winds up in the vehicle of a… policeman? Firefighter? I’m not sure, but this guy in a uniform. The guy is surprised to see him, but they clearly know each other, even though this is the first time we’ve seen the uniformed guy. In the uncut film, right around when Tony is introduced, we see him talking to this guy, establishing that they’re friends.

Oh, now I remember Moon Zero Two. There is also at least two scenes cut, but theye are mostly exposition, and the same info gets told later, so nothing missed. The most amusing part is, where Kemp meets with the security guard woman, who gets shot near the end. It turns out that under the cap she has long curly purple hair.

  3. Kafka Was Right says:

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of times they used the “edited-for-TV” versions of these movies, cut for both time and content. Mitchell is the perfect example of that. Also, some of these movies exist in different edits usually done by whoever had the rights to them at the time. For example, the Sandy Frank edits of the Gamera movies are pretty different from the other versions out there. So while I’m sure the Brains had to do plenty of trimming, a lot of those cuts were already done for them.

#47“We’re superior because we have God!”

Actually, the line is “Human’s true size is the size of our God.”

That part is kinda funny because of The Monitor’s reaction. He just looks at Cal like WTF, man?

Oh yeah. The Pumaman. I’ve seen it uncut before too.

The scene where Vadhino breaks into Tony’s apartment is a lot longer. After Tony gets away from Vadhino he goes down to his car (a VW bug IIRC) in a garage. Vadhino follows him, rips off the passenger side door to his car, and alerts Tony to the fact that he’s heading for a trap. Tony doesn’t believe him, but Vadhino refuses to go away. Tony drives off with Vadhino in the car and his door ripped off. He then ditches Vadhino by doing a weird driving stunt inside a circular portion of the road and pins Vadhino to a wall next to the road and runs off to get to the party with Vadhino temporarily unable to catch up to him.

Check out the orginal Russian version of Jack Frost. It not only looks good in the orginal print–the colors are actually quite crisp (but not quite TRACEY CRISP) and pleasing. There is an opening monologue by an old lady, and many more cool cut scenes that I can’t remember at the moment. I should note the cuts were made by the American distributors and not Best Brains.

Ah, yes, Cheryl the Rainbow in Incredible Melting Man…to add to the nude scenes there is nudity in what appears to be the tacked on opening of Beast of Yucca Flats (the girl who gets murdered by a Tor double’s hands) for what was probably a theatricla rerelease. Unlike Cheryl’s scene, not worth seeking out.

The Wild Rebels has more of the groovy band in the dancing/bar scene. They are actually pretty good…though on the other hand more Alaimo’s dancing is NOT good…

“Young Man’s Fancy”, the short from episode 610, had a lot of stuff that was cut out for the commercial break. Most of it’s more plotting by the squishy Judy to get into Alexander Phipps’ pants. Sally, who’s credited at the end of the short but doesn’t appear in the cut version, also tries to help.

In fact, one of the scenes, involving Alexander boring her father about machinery, was used as footage for Yes’s concert film, “9012Live.” Alexander says, “Some of those large generators have the rhythm of music,” causing Judy to ask him to put a record on, which turns out to be a “square” classical piece. The father then mutters, “The rhythm of big generators…” and as a result, “Big Generator” became the title of Yes’s next album. So there you have it, an MST’d short was responsible for a rock band’s artistic choices.

The full version starts here: http://www.archive.org/details/YoungMan1952

(If this is a repeat, it’s because for some reason my comment is awaiting moderation. If it happens again, I won’t repeat it.)

  11. “The Home Economics Story” (episode 317) is also much longer, with some stuff cut from the middle about playing sports, how “samey” each year was in college, and why chemistry courses are important in creating cream of tomato soup. There’s also a weird bit where the camera focuses on Kay’s blanket for fifteen seconds in silence. Some of this footage was also used for the aforementioned Yes live video.

The full version starts here: http://www.archive.org/details/HomeEcon1951

I bought a few unmystied dvds a couple of months ago. In Girl in Gold Boots, there is a short scene as they enter the Haunted House that was cut out, and after the scene where they first meet Buzz’s sister, critter leaves and michelle follows him outside where they have a scene that was cut out. And the tale end cut of the scene where buzz introduces Harry Blatz to Leo, and he and buzz leave the room to discuss his scheme as critter secretly listens in to the conversation. There is apparently a few scenes or shots that the MST print, as bad as their print was what with the jump cuts, that are not in my dvd version! Right after the scene where buzz and michelle escape the 2 bikers and where buzz “pulls off the babushka” and they start to kiss in the car, the scene then fades to buzz taking a swig of a beer and servo says “wait is was a dream, now he’s kissing his budwiser!” is not in my dvd print. And another short shot where buzz examines critter’s motorcycle is missing. And I also noticed in the trailer there is a few seconds of critter singing “One Good Time, One Place” to the kids on the truck that drops him off at Eat, is not in my dvd. I just assume it was in the original print since the song is listed in the music credits. I figure those scenes are now lost due to the bad condition of the print MST used and the print used for the dvd I have lost even the remaining scenes on MST3k! Compared to the dvd I also bought of Horror at Party Beach, which is almost pristine, the original print of GOld boots must be in pretty shabby shape! Although it makes me wonder if any of the earliest VHS releases of Gold Boots has a full version?

There is another scene in “Squirm” that is cut out. Roger slithers his way like a worm up the stairs at the end of the movie. Mick then “beats him” with a flashlight. (Mick actually hits his own hand.)

The scene that #12 is talking about is here:

    http://www.badmovies.org/movies/squirm/squirm3.jpg

This makes the stinger at the end not too odd.

Also, the trailer for “Clonus” shows some of the scenes MST3K cut. Some of the cut scenes I hate because in the Sci-fi year, they took 8 minutes before the movie would start and most of the host segments were lame. I’d rather see them riff on the whole movie as much as possible instead of the “filler” they provide.

Zombie Nightmare, eh? Funny you mention that. I had a fan copy sitting around that I got from tape trading MST3K eps and I watched the scene you’re looking for just now.

The frizzle-haired kid tries to rape that waitress girl and tosses her on a pile of garbage bags. She spits on him, but he pulls a knife out. She slaps him or something and frizzle-boy gets off her. At that very moment the zombie comes up to him and frizzy-kid stabs the zombie repeatedly to no effect. The zombie then starts pushing him around, and frizzy starts wondering why the zombie isn’t dying. At that point zombie pushes the tip of his baseball bat through frizzy’s chest, and he promptly dies (with the baseball bat still sticking through him). Note that this is actually the first time you get to see the second zombie costume/actor.

There’s an alternative cut of “Riding with Death” which is on the VHS release. It opens with about 15 minutes of footage from the pilot, and lacks the red-tinted flashbacks, Backstory Database, and Eavesdropping Abby. If I remember correctly, it’s also missing the bar fight. There are several scenes in it that are not in the MST3K version, like another Driscoll/Denby scene, another song during the truck driving, an extended bit of Buffalo getting loopy during the race, and a bit showing Casey using his invisibility to steal the acetylene torch (and others I can’t remember specifically).

Hobgoblins cuts out the scenes with Mr. McCreedy’s boss and an earlier scene with the red shorts kid on the phone with fantasia.
Squirm has the skinny girl topless (nothing to write hom about).

I’ve seen that. It almost doesn’t qualify as nudity.

Cabbage Patch Elvis #60 – I just Googled it and it’s actually “Five-pound Party”, which is a bridal shower. But is sure does sound like “potty”.

I also remembered that in “Warrior of the Lost World”, the warrior and Nastasia view an execution of three resistance members. They are electrocuted, then their bodies are torched. That explains the smoke in the air when her father is brought out.

I used to have several videos on YouTube that had the missing scenes from certain MST3K movies (with bumpers of the MST3K part to let you know where the scene fit in), but the copyright-nazi’s deleted a bunch of them. The funniest part, is even though my video only had a SMALL part of the movie, you can still see the videos that have full versions of either the MST3K version, or the regular version still on YouTube. I guess they are pick and choose on who they want to delete from. My videos covered:

    Track of the Moon Beast
    Legend of Boggy Creek II
    Pumaman
    It Lives By Night
    Time Chasers
    Hobgoblins
Final Justice (I didn’t upload this one, since it had nudity)
Incredible Melting Man (again, no upload since it had nudity)
    Space Mutiny
Sinister Urge (another nudity one, so not uploaded)
    Manos: The Hands of Fate
    The Girl in Gold Boots
    Future War
Squirm (minus the small nudity scenes)
    The Touch of Satan

Maybe one day (when I’m really bored) I’ll type out descriptions of the scenes, since I’ll NEVER upload them again and waste my time twice. Nice to see that some people here have already covered some of my movies listed. I didn’t read every post, so I’m not sure if all of them were already mentioned.

We watched “ZAATs” (Blood Waters of Dr. Z) when it was on TCM a couple of months ago. There was a long scene cut from the MSTied version that dealt with the sheriff going to a school gymnasium to escort a group of hippies to the City jail after an extended folk festival (or something like that). This cut did not take anything out of the quality of the film. Also some of the more egregious racism was also cut.

The non-MST3K version of “The Incredible Melting Man” also confirms the fatality of Dr. Ted Nelson’s mother-in-law and her boyfriend: we see Melty snarfing away in the back seat, then tossing out a chewed up wrinkly body part. (No explanation for the vanishing dog.)

The only cut that ticks me off personally is the major chop-out from “This Island Earth” for “MST3K The Movie,” in which Exeter and company blow up the mansion to cover their tracks (or for laughs, who knows). Most of the other cuts are justifiable for content or just because they’re boring (longer scenes in “Pumaman?” No thanks!), but the film’s final running time is actually shorter than a regular MSTie sans commercials so there’s no solid reason for it. Besides, it’s a fun scene (stuff blows up!) and it’s highly riffable (“Ach! To ze bunker HogaaaaaaAAAAHHHHH!!!”).

The only MST3k movie I ever saw before being MSTED was San Francisco International. There is a cut scene after Davey takes off where the control tower delays all flights. David Hartman gets on the radio and tells the tower his wife has been kidnapped and is being held hostage on the plane. This is how Clu Gulager gets a clue about what is going on .

I rented a tape of Warwilf a few years ago and this is what I remember, some of which was mentioned already: Longer shot of Noel driving to the dig site, more blood when Tommy breaks out of the hospital and attacks the Bob Vila sheriff, Yuri flirting with the nurse when she’s at a desk or counter or something, a conversation between Paul and the taxi driver about werewolf sightings right before Paul arrives at his new home, Paul rejecting the advances of no-pants lady; who then gets angry at being rejected, sex scene with Paul and Natalie. I saw a little of Diabolik on tv and there was an extended scene of Diabolik using laughing gas during a police press conference, at last I think that’s what it was.

  28. DeeJay says:

In Eegah, there was a scene where Roxy’s father used the biblical quote about there being “Giants in those days” to defend her against some doubters, making the use of that quote at the end of the movie make more sense. The scene in Final Justice of the stripper getting raped against a shower window was very unpleasant, but did give an explanation of why she suddenly wanted to help Joe Don Baker. In the ACEG for the SciFi years, it’s stated that Hamlet was cut to almost half of its original runtime. I also remember seeing the uncut version of Catalina Caper, which had the footage of the partiers finding the capsule with the painting in it. I know that some of the mystied movies had extra nude scenes that were filmed only for the European releases like Tormented and The Crawling Hand. I also heard that when Ed Wood moved on to softcore movies, he re-released The Sinister Urge after filming some new scenes involving nudity and sticking them in between the original scenes. The SciFi ACEG also mentions that in Boggy Creek II it graphically shows the guy falling into the outhouse hole.

There are only two movies that I have seen un-MSTed versions of, Alien from L.A. and The Final Sacrifice. I saw both before they became MST fodder. Final Sacrifice (the version I saw was called “Search for the Lost City”)didn’t get anything cut from what I remember, but I do remember being thrilled when I found out it would be an MST3K episode. Alien from L.A. did get a few scenes cut. Nothing that made the movie better by any means. Just some random wandering scenes, filler and of course…dull suprise.

Danger: Death Ray has several scenes cut that help explain some of the story (if you care). For instance, Frog Guy’s partner gets trapped in the building during their escape with the Death Ray and dies. That explains why you never see him again. The fight between Fargo and Frog Guy is a lot longer, obviously, since they cut to commercial during the middle of it, and when they return, the fight is over. There’s a couple more things I noticed at the time, but I’m not in the mood to watch it again for the sake of exposition.

The weird arm-dropping-the-watch-in-the-pool edit at the end is in the original.

  32. Iggy Pop's Brother Steve Pop says:

I’ve never seen the uncut “Squirm,” but it’s funny that the Brains could cut it from 93 minutes to maybe 65, and it still makes almost perfect sense (we have to infer Mama’s death, but that’s not too bad). Is that the only instance where they took a movie that could have filled an episode by itself, and cut more out anyway to put in a short? Mind you, I’m glad they did, because I’d much rather have “A Case of Spring Fever” (dragging second half and all) than ten or so more minutes of “Squirm.”

The record for cutting must be the German “Hamlet.” According to IMDb, it ran 152 minutes in the original. So the ACEG, as quoted by DeeJay (#78) is right about it getting cut in half.

  37. I’ve actually gone so far as to re-edit one of the MST3K episodes — “Hercules”.

While it’s certainly choice MST3K material, the original actually makes a fairly interesting point when Herc makes a decision to give up his immortality so he can have a “normal” life (to love and be loved). The MST3K movie shows him at the Oracle just prior to his decision, and then cuts out the 20 second or so scene where he makes this pivotal choice.

Not only does the rest of the movie lack punch (because you aren’t aware he is mortal then) but the Oracle’s mocking laugh and closing line (basically saying “Be careful what you wish for” except in Greek prose :>) and Herc’s expression are priceless. To me it is the whole point of the movie (after that Herc really interacts with his fellow men and women in a completely different way) so I had to edit it back in (although I don’t have the silhouettes at the bottom the edit is seamless and works quite well for me).

(For those who might wonder — there are many priceless lines Mike and the Bots could have used during that sequence, particularly when Herc pulls that face. I’ve made up plenty of my own).

More Hobgoblins (the only one I’ve seen unMSTed):

A bunch of “trying to be funny but turned out to be gross” sexual dialogue was cut.

-When they try to get into Club Scum, there is a lame exchange as to whether Pixie (the beehive-haired waitress) is working or ‘working’ (meaning as a hooker). The sergeant references this later.
-Also concerning the sergeant, his invitation to Daphne to the truck of soldiers outside goes into more detail.
-There are several more shots of Amy and Road Rash making out, where at one point Amy says “I’m faking my orgasm for you.” What is still in the MSTed version is when Road Rash comes back (after Amy is back to normal) and says “You still gonna fake your orgasm for me?”, but the word orgasm is deleted in the MST.
-There’s another thing with Fantasia, this time talking to the audience, after the credits (you can hear her voice for a second as Mike and the bots are walking out).
-As mentioned, one of the red shorts guy’s calls to Fantasia was cut (the one in the MST is actually the second one).

With all this cut, as well as the movie studio boss and some pointless dialogue after they get the hobgoblins out of the house, and I think the movie was much improved, as sad as that is.

At first I wasn’t sure to post this here or to wait for when Merlin’s Shop is covered in the the episode guide, but what the hell I’ll do it now. The movie the Devil’s Gift, which was the original movie about the toy monkey before it got edited into Merlin’s Shop had some interesting stuff that got cut out that didn’t make it into the Merlin version. The following stuff is missing from Merlin’s version(SPOILERS of course)

-The dad has these recurring nightmares, which include seeing his son drown in the bathtub(you even see the body in the tub!),getting married in his underwear in the forest, and getting attacked by a werewolf in his house.
-After the dog dies they bury it out in the yard.
-It’s made clear in this movie that Susan, the Toni Tennille lookalike is not the boy’s mother. In the Devil’s Gift she’s shown living in a different house, and there are scenes where the kid calls her Susan and not mom.
-The Uncle Pusher guy is a lot more annoying here. Through the course of the film he does these annoying Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart impersonations to cheer up the dad.
-The evil toy monkey possess Susan in a couple of failed attempts to kill the kid. In the last attempt the monkey has Susan try to drown the kid in the bathtub while dad is away(FORESHADOWING!). However, the dad comes home early and gets into an argument with the now depossessed Susan because, he knows she was trying to drown him. During the argument, she trips on a ledge and hits her head causing her to go to the hospital. This is why you don’t her again in Merlin after the dog gets fried.
-In the real ending the monkey kills everyone in the house. After the kid yells out dad a couple more times the screen goes to black and you hear an explosion and some fire over the end credits. Contrary to popular belief the screams you hear in the Merlin version when he picks up the monkey were not there originally. In fact, those were dubbed in voices to make it seem like the family got out of the house safely.

The only one I’ve seen uncut is Mitchell, which also contained an earlier scene of him searching Linda’s purse for drugs (making his line about searching it AGAIN in the MSTed version make more sense), and we come closer to seeing her topless, but not quite due to shadow. We also seen Martin and Merlin’s car get a door sheared off by the car of that guy Mitchell shoots for no reason right after the halfway break.

Everything else has already been covered, but I’d just like to say that I actually laughed at the scene where our hero catches up to the guy who ran him off the road. See, because his MSTory entry identifies his character as “Mustang Hood”, and the last we see of him is his hand crushed in the Mustang’s door instead.

Hey, it could’ve been worse; I’ve seen Andy Warhol’s Bad. And I think the same thing happens in Kiss Me Deadly.

There was actually more of Pod People in the MST3K Hour? Are those cuts on Youtube too, or have no fans bothered?

I also forgot one more thing. The bethagram is explained a lot more clearly here then in Merlin. After coming home from the angry psychic dad gets a shower and the monkey tries to kill him in the shower by having tar come out of the shower. He doesn’t die because he had the bethagram nearby. This is also the reason why he survived that tree falling down on him.

  49. In LASERBLAST, near the end Billy actually blew up another police car. This was shortly before his girlfriend and the agent arrive. I noticed this extended scene when watching a clip of the film in the compilation DVD “Aliens Gone Wild!”

I know that there was one tidbit of a scene that probably should have been cut in Creeping Terror. At the dance scene, the guy cruelly attacking the woman rips her dress and a nipple gets exposed for a frame or two. It wasn’t something I saw until the DVD version came out, it is in the uncut and MST3K versions. It is pretty quick so I guess it would have been easy to miss for the Brains and network censors.
