Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite DVD Set

Alert reader David writes:

In the wake of the recent Shout Factory release of Vol. XV and announcement of contents for XVI, I want to know what people consider their favorite of the numerous DVD box sets.

Talking points could include:
• artwork/packaging
• bonus features (trailers, outtakes, interviews)
• episode choices (Joel/Mike ratios, favorites/non-favorites, thematic connections)
• Rhino vs. Shout Factory

This topic could go in a few directions. Some people may choose to rank all the sets in order of preference and others may chose a single set as their “desert-island dvd”. Also, suggestions for which set a budding MSTie might purchase first.

Well, I’m afraid I’m biased. I have to pick the 20th Anniversary Set from Shout Factory because, well, I’m on it. :-)

What’s your pick?

Volume 5 is my favorite, followed by Volume 4 simply because the episodes always make me laugh. I don’t care about extras or packaging, since they really can’t help a weaker episode in terms of enjoyment.

It’s kind of like asking me which one of my kids I love the most. That being said Vol. 6 is my Fav. because it Contains my Fav. episode. Really old “Teenagers form Outerspace”. There I said it, but I still love my kids all the same !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m not gonna try to pick by content, for me that’s like trying to choose between my children.. just not doable. I will say I *much* prefer the Shout packaging. Slim cases all the way for me. I have tons of DVD boxes and probably half of the flip-out cardboard ones like Rhino used end up with on of the hubs broken at some point. With single slim cases I can fix that… not so with the others. For art I’m split.. the early Rhino collage style and the new comic stuff are pretty equal, but that later Rhino stuff which just seemed to by whatever random crap the artist had up in a browser window that day… not so much.

Vol. 7, with the two Hercules movies and Prince of Space, is probably my favorite. I got into MST3K through the syndicated episodes, and the Hercules eps were a part of that.

My gut reactions says Vol 2 is my favorite, if for no other reason than the movies they riff. Cave Dwellers, Pod People, Angel’s Revenge are all classics, and top that off with some great shorts and this set is batting 1.000.

Volume 4 is my favorite, with volume 5 in second place. I began watching MST3k regularly when it started on the Sci-Fi Channel. I have a fondness for all of the episodes in the volume 4 DVD set. They are all good episode, with Hamlet being the only weak one, but it’s still good.

My favorite set is Volume 5 because of the presence of my favorite episode: Time Chasers, filmed in my hometown of Rutland, Vt.

I have to go with #6. Artwork is great, good variety on the episodes and Mr. B’s Lost Shorts are primo. A bit lacking in extras but that’s ok.

Overall, I prefer the Shout Factory style of packaging (the slim-pak cases, not the box art).

So I’d go with Vol. 12 for the box art, and Vol. 10 for the episodes. Why Vol. 10?
    1) Good episode selections, quality-wise
    2) Good episode balance–early and later Joel, and early and later Mike
    3) 2 great shorts, with one representing Joel and the other representing Mike
    4) It technically has 5 episodes if you count Giant Gila Monster from Vol. 10.2

I kinda’ have a hard time remebering which eps were in which box because, well…am I the only one who mixes and matches disks within the Rhino box sets and staggers individual release eps in between to get them all in as close to original broadcast order as possible? Well, I always did, and when Shout! started using thin cases, it made me wish Rhino had always done the same. Is there a site where someone has done printable standard DVD case sized sleeves for individual eps, at least for Rhino VHS eps that ended up in the boxes? I’d love to be able to truly get them in order.

That said, the last 4 Rhino sets kinda’ blur together for me, and I dragged my feet getting the first 5 since I could already see them all on VHS or SciFi channel at the time (I learned my lesson when they lost The Beginning of the End, though). The only box that really stands out in my mind is Volume 8, partly because I watched the 2 CC eps with a friend on the same day immediately after getting it for Christmas. The main reason, however, is that #8 is the ‘Twin Pillars of Hell Box’, being the only volume to bookend 2 average-ish eps with 2 where they tackled what I consider to be ‘Maw of Hell’ caliber movies (see ACEG intros): Monster A Go-Go and Hobgoblins. Because of this, the box art happened to be at its best here, with the dark grime setting an appropriately grim tone. My only regret is that the Hobgoblins disc wasn’t just like Pearl’s film canister with “WARNING: MAY CAUSE BLINDNESS AND DEATH” printed on it, but the manhole cover was indeed, the next best thing.

That said, Volume 8 is conversely the last one you should ever use to intoduce anyone to the show. I accidnentally showed Hobgoblins to someone who’d never seen MST3K before, and the mindwarping was even worse than I predicted. I had a backup ep with me, and I warned her boyfriend repeatedly, but he just wouldn’t listen…

Volume 9 would be my second for spanning an unusually wide range of the show for a Rhino set, having two really early Joels, an Ed Wood-flavored Mike, and my all-time favorite SciFi ep, which the bizarrely thought-provoking box art honored by having a carnival in the background! The disc art was the best in that set too.

I won’t complain about any box art being too nonsensical (even if the Crow and Tom ‘retro’ posters could get old soon, and didn’t work as well for the most recently made movies), but the exterior art for each Shout! set looking so similar could seriously confuse or fail to attract any new blood to fandom. The screen above the seats should contain either all four ep posters next to each other, or a collage of people and things from the movies, similar in composition to the later Rhino boxes. Or perhaps a photomosaic of the ‘Bots made of screencaps? That might break Shout!’s bank though…

    Hands down…BY A MILE…the recently announced set.

Warrior of the Lost World and Santa Claus are the two best episodes to be released in a box set.

    My ideal is:

2 Joel episodes (preferably not from Season 1)
2 Mike episodes (preferably from the CC years, but, anything is cool)

Two of my Joel favorites that are also all-time personal favorites are on one set, that’s the winner, the set with Pod People and Cave Dwellers. They’re also two of the best episodes for introducing new people to the show. Both are bust-a-gut funny and the movies themselves are amusing.

The Rhino sets had some nice box art, but I agree that the slim packs are a bit nicer for storing the DVDs. I’m a little annoyed that Shout Factory doesn’t put the episode number anywhere on the boxes. I also think that the Rhino DVDs had MUCH better menu screens. Far more creative, and no lame-ass computer rendered Tom & Crow.

As to my favorite set? My favorite is always the one they are planning to release next!

  19. BigRiggBlues says:

The packaging for the Rhino sets were nicer. I like the uniform look of the Shout Factory sets, but some visual variety is nice. Personally, I think that the single-disk Rhino releases had the best packaging of all. Also, the lack of episode numbers is a HUGE minus for the Shout Factory discs. Best Packaging still goes to Shout Factory for the 20th Anniversary Edition Limited Edition set. It had the iconic look, a shiny metal tin, lobby cards, and the best of all a Crow T. Robot mini-bust.

So far as DVD extras go, so far the Shout Factory releases haven’t been much better than the Rhino extras. The film trailers are cool, but interviewing the creators of the MSTied films isn’t necessarily interesting. However, the best extras had to be on the 20th Anniversary Edition, the ComiCon pannel was the funniest thing I’ve seen outside of the show itself.

The actual episodes per set have been hit and miss for both companies, so far. It will be interesting to see what films/episodes Shout Factory can come up with in the future. Both companies have maintained a healthy Joel-Mike ratio, though it would be equally enjoyable if a set were completely one or the other. The winner for me here is Rhino’s Volume 5, if for no other reason than “Boggy Creek II: And the Legend Continues”. There are so many hilarious moments in that film, especially once Crenshaw arrives on screen. Also, the film opens up on the campus of the University of Arkansas, where I work. It’s funny to see what it looked like 30 years ago. The only way a single set could have beaten Volume 5 for me is if it had both “Prince of Space” and “Invasion of the Neptune Men” together.

Ever notice the similarity of giant Derek at the movie’s end to the OatMB Novicorp Chairman (The Fat Man)? And Overdrawn was made just one year before 1984! (Twilight Zone music plays).

  22. Jimmy says:

Sets #4 & 5 are the cream of the crop. Great episodes, the ones that are constantly in my DVD player. I’m surprised that Time Chasers, Boggy Creek II, Space Mutiny, Girl in Gold Boots, and Overdrawn aren’t worn out yet. I’m a bit disappointed we haven’t seen more sets featuring four eps from the SciFi era, but that’s understandable with how tough it is to acquire certain rights.

I prefer what Rhino did with the sets as far as presentation and packaging. I liked the Rhino warnings, intros, and menus, and the Mike intros as well. I also liked the fold-out cases much more than the slip cases. Shout does a much better job providing extras.

Just like everyone else, I too like all my DVD MST. I’m going to go with Vol. 2. I believe it’s the most *solid* of the sets. The inclusion of SHORTS VOL. 1 is truly of great advantage. The shorts comps are easily the best way to introduce the series to newbies and the three eps are about as strong as your gonna get. I can’t wait for Vol. XVI! I just then may have to change my vote

I thought it would be interesting to list the MST3K episodes that WERE on DVD, but are now out-of-print:

104 – Women of the Prehistoric Planet
    207 – Wild Rebels
    209 – Hellcats
    212 – Godzilla vs. Megalon
309 – The Amazing Colossal Man (tape only)
517 – Beginning of the End
    613 – The Sinister Urge
    812 – Incredibly…Zombies

I wonder if they will ever be released again?

I just have to say that I am so glad that I picked up sets Vol. 9 and 10 (not 10.2) when I did when they first came out! I will treasure these forever! They go for BIG, BIG bucks on E-Bay! If they are still selling them on there. Also glad that I kept my VHS Rhino release of The Amazing Colossal Man as well! Oh, and the final Rhino release of The Giant Gila Monster. Woops, one more: Another VHS Rhino release, Begining Of The End. I do love all the sets that came out so far. Just hard to pick just one !!

I’m with many that Volume 5 is the greatest. So many other sets have me only wanting 1 or 2 good films on them. Volume 5 has winners with all 4 discs.

The 20th Anniv Box Set is a close second, because 3/4 of the discs are in rotation (watching Laserblast right now). I still haven’t the patience to sit through ‘First Spaceship to Venus’).

7, 5, and 4. 7 has such an eclectic mix. The two joel hercules work really well being on the same set and killer shrews is another great ep. Prince of space really takes it home for me. This set was the set that really turned me on to joel and the earlier episodes. 5 has time chasers and touch of satan two fine episodes of the scifi era. Merlins shop is decent and has a nice interview with mike and kevin giving a condensed history of the show. Boggy creek is okay but chuck pierce causes too much pain with his horribleness. 4 was the first set I picked up and space mutiny and overdrawn make that set a personal essential. Girl in gold boots is grood (good and great, great and good) but really doesn’t fit with the former two eps. Hamlet is just hard to watch end of story.

My vote would be for number two – “Pod People” was one of the all-time best eps, and “Angel’s Revenge” & “Cave Dwellers” crack me up no matter how many times I watch them. Add to that some of the best shorts including “A Date With Your Family” and “Cheating.”

Hmmm I am an artist so as far a packaging is concerned I really love the slim packs and the attention given to each episode (comic art). I cant wait to see the illustrations for the newly announced set!

Content wise Its gotta be a tie between 4,5 and the anniversary set. I have turned several people onto MST3k with Werewolf.

Im really loving the New set with ZOmbie nightmare, girl on lovers lane and Racket Girls all great episodes but the Aztec mummy I cant stay awake through.

One of my favorite sets and one that I went back to on my spinning holder is Volume 5 with a great selection of color episodes, which is something that I think matters as much as the host.

I also agree with Volume 12 and the art gallery (Crow’s shocked expression due to the nude statue and the original movie posters on the wall as great touches). The art on the discs of the later sets is also quite cool (fried eggs & pill cases are standouts) but there is something to be said for the Roman Numerals and splash of color as well.

One thing that I think would be quite cool would be reproduction letters that they read on the air or some of the art that was but on still store. Sure it might have been elementary and somewhat useless but in the history of the show the very documentation of its popularity (fan letters) might make a cool special feature at the least down the road.

Well I have darn near ever MST3K release (With the exception of Amazing Colossal Man, since that one never made it to DVD — oh and my copy of “Essentials” didn’t come with the Shorts DVD… But I don’t really care about that anyway…)

I found that Rhino put a lot of work into their DVD case designs, which was nice… However the fold out cases I found were very impractical. I like Shouts! cases because the comic bookish art is cute, and they use slim cases — so you don’t have to flip the damn case open to fish out the episode you’re looking for.

The best collection box set in terms of appearance though is going to go to Rhino naturally. Their graphic arts people are amazing. The three while having novel little designs were ugly compared to some of the beauts they made after Vol 5. I’d have to say that it’s a hard tie between Vol 7-10 they all have amazing designs, I also love the designs on the discs they are classic. Shout! Factory’s releases are basic, they get to the point but they should really change up their slip covers.

Worst design: Volume 1, right across the board. As someone who does a little graphic design himself, if I were the guy who designed it, I’d be embarrassed!

When it comes to the best collection of episodes hands down: Volume 5. Time Chasers, Merlin’s Shop and Touch of Satan are priceless (Boggy Creek isn’t too bad either, not the best) Second place goes to Volume 4 for having Girl in Gold Boot, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, and Space Mutiny in one collection (Hamlet is effing boring though)

Worst collection of episodes: A Tie between Volume 3 and Volume 7. Volume 3 had a WEAK selection (Sidehackers, The Unearthly and the Atomic Brain. *snore*) plus it went cheap with the Shorts collection. Volume 7 has the most painfully long episodes (Hercules Unchained, Hercules Against the Moon Men, Prince of Space and Killer Shrews) the only good one in that batch (pardon the pun) was Prince of Space, the Hercules movies were painfully boring and I swear Killer Shrews is a perfect window to what my eternal hell will be when I die.

Best sets for Bonus Features, I have to say that all the Shout! Factory releases have great bonus features, I always thought the Rhino stuff was significantly lacking because there was so many different things to choose from to put in as bonuses. A good one from Rhino though I’ll give to Volume 11.

Worst bonus features: Vol 10 (the original one not 10.2) was WEAK. The video Juke Boxes always came off as a cheap and weak “bonus feature”, granted a lot of the songs are really funny, BUT as I stated they have so much other material they could choose from (KTMA clips, Turkey Day bumpers, Jack Perkin’s etc.)

One feature I wish they would bring back: Including non-MST3K versions of the movies. I loved that feature even though Rhino chose to do it with those ever infuriating double sided DVD’s (I hate these with a passion) I certainly miss being able to “go it alone” against the movie uncut and see if I have the guts to make it all the way through without MST3K assistance.

I have to vote for #9 for not just the span of eras, but for the quality of episodes from said eras. All four are among my favorites, and incredibly solid episodes. If I had to lend out a single unmixed box set to someone as an MST3K starter kit, I’d pick this.

Just skip the interview with the old guy from Sinister Urge. He clearly has no idea what’s going on.

My favourite box set is #4 which contains 3 episodes that I’ve watched the most and one that I’ve watched the least (Hamlet). It also has the worst packaging (after set #2). What where they (Rhino) thinking with that button/knob thingy anyway? I have to put two slim cases (which happen to be some Rocky Jones episodes, unmstied) between it and #5 to keep wear on the cases to a minimum (no matter how crappy they are). After that I’d have to say the 20th anniversary set. “Werewolf” and “Laserblast” are quickly gaining on “Girl In Gold Boots”, “Overdrawn At The Memory Bank” & “Space Mutiny” as my most watched.

It’s always interesting to see responses to these threads. After years of pulling out the Rhino sets all the time, I went to a large DVD wallet-style case, with the episode numbers and titles “p-touched” on each slot (with slots open for future releases). It saves on wear and tear on the cases and saves on room in the DVD colection (I have over seven hundred titles).

But, as for favourite set; it’s easy to say “The Essentials” (two desert island/introduction to newbie eps.), but I’d have to go with Volume 2. Two great (awful) season three (Cave Dwellers & Pod People) movies, a six (Angel’s Revenge… so, so bad) and a shorts.

I personally love the comic book style art used for Shout! Factory’s releases. I can’t say why for sure, but they just appeal to me. The only problem I have with the Shout! stuff is they don’t have a chapters menu plus the 20th Anniversery and XIV needed more chapter stops–thank goodness they fixed this in vol. XV.

As for my favorite set, I would say it’s a toss-up between Volume 1 (Season 6 is my favorite) and Volume 12. And Vol 10 because it’s the most valuable.

However, I agree with Geode; there hasn’t been a set that’s completely done it for me yet.

While I do miss the Rhino dvd sets (and the uniformitivty of my dvd rack) I have enjoyed the SHOUT! releases very much (yes, insert a *we like it very much* reference here). My major complaint is that the dvd chapters do not synch up with the commerical sign breaks like the Rhino releases did. It’s a tv show on dvd-it force-feeds you chapter break opportunities. Why not take them up on the offer? LOL

  43. Stoneman says:

Good subject. First, I agree with anyone else who has posted that it would be great to have every volume contain the original movie without commentary. As far as packaging, I like the Rhino “sleeve/box/container” better, because with Volumes 14 and 15 the outer boxes are already starting to fall apart- very cheap. I also find it very annoying that the Shout discs do not have scene selection option. Otherwise, I have no great preference as far as artwork etc. and the episode selections so far from Shout are excellent.

I am going to rate the volumes I have in order of preference, based on the strength of the episode selections- again, I have no bias either way with the extra features. I do not have volumes 1, 2, 3 or 5 (yet) so I will not include them in the ranking.

First, I think “The Essentials” would be a great introduction to the show for someone unfamiliar with it.

    1. 20th Anniversary set: The one exception to my rule above- while the episode selection is outstanding, the extras of the history of the show and the panel get-together from 2008 make it a very special volume indeed.
    2. Volume 7: How can you not love “Prince of Space”, “The Killer Shrews”, and two Hercules movies, PLUS three bonus shorts, including the hilarious (and never seen on tv) “Assignment: Venezuela”?
    3. Volume 6: Again, outstanding episodes plus a whole bunch of shorts, including “Mr. B Natural”.
    4. Volume 10 or 10.2, whatever: a fantastic mix of Mike and Joel episodes.
    5. Volume 4: One of the better episodes from Season 10 (“Girl In Gold Boots”), and two of the best ones from one of my two favorite seasons (seasons 8 amd 6).
    6. Volume 9
    7.Volume 8
    8. Volume 15
    9. Volume 14
    10. Volume 11
    11. Volume 12

Finally, in the future I would love to see those first 8 episodes of Season 8 on DVD- the riffing on those Universal stinkers AND the host segments are consistently top-rate. Thanks for reading, fellow nut-cases.

I’d have to go with Volume 12. 3 very strong episodes, and one pretty good one (Clonus). And besides the quality of the episodes, it’s also perfectly balanced – 2 Joel, 1 Mike CC, and 1 Mike SciFi.

Volume 2 and 7 would probably be my next favorites. The 20th Anniversary Set has by far the best extras, but the episodes themselves don’t do a lot for me.

Stoneman, thanks for the shout out to Assignment: Venezuela, which I should have mentioned in my first post (#10, way up the board). That truly is one of the funniest shorts they ever took on, and it’s the one I use to introduce MST3K to newcomers–so many quotable lines.

That, along with the other solid movies in the set, makes Volume 7 one of the all-time greats.

I also own a lot of standalone dvds (only the ones that aren’t in volumes, in other words, i’m not gonna buy the standalone dvd for Bloodlust). i would say that my favorite is vol. XIV. vol. XVI looks like it might be the best yet! Vol. 8 looks like a great one, i’ve seen Hobgoblins of course but i haven’t seen Monster-a-Go-Go or any of the other eps in that vol. yet. it still looks like a painful, but funny vol. vol 10/10.2 looks great too! I like the new Shout! Factory releases and the more recent Rhino relases best. Why? Well, the early Rhino stuff was all eps that had already been released/I’d already seen before. The more recent stuff (rhino AND s!f) always has had at least one episode that was new to me. S!F’s comic book covers are cool, though. I’m pretty sure Steve Vance (the guy who draws ’em) is the same Steve Vance who does/used to do art for Bongo comics (who publish Simpsons and Futurama and related comic books). I like it (his art) very much. As for an Ideal Set, it would contain:
-Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (I want this b/c my copy cut out just before the ending)
-Robot Monster (I’ve always wanted to see this episode)
-Jack Frost-(One of my top two Mike eps)
-Hercules and the Captive Women (see the same reason as GvSM)
Some cool extras would be the “Little Gold Statue”, Summer Blockbuster Reviews, and Academy Award shows
I know, I know, snowball’s chance at some of this stuff, but I can dream, can’t I?

  50. My current favorites are 2, 4, and 7 for the reasons of the great episodes, a few movies that are enjoyable even without the riffing (Hercules Unchained especially), and Assignment: Venezuela.

Right now I’m hoping for a set that contains the four episodes of the Mike Nelson: Destroyer of Worlds saga (Deadly Mantis, She-Creature, Riding with Death, and Agent for HARM).
