Rhino tells us the single-disk version of episode 402- THE GIANT GILA MONSTER will be available only at rhino.com for a price of–get this: $7.98 (cheap!). Our source also tells us it will only be available for a limited time (essentially until the limited pressing runs out–although we were also told that if sales are really strong initially, they may do a second pressing).
UPDATE 1: We can now confirm this report, which says that Dr. Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) and TV’s Frank (Frank Conniff) are also in the “Message from Joel” and that Tom Servo and Crow also have speaking roles.
And for those who did want a true replacement for the previous disk, we’re told the “Photo Gallery” (featuring a collection of historic Best Brains still photos)–which was included on the old Godzilla vs. Megalon disk, is also included on this one.
UPDATE 2: Ahead of schedule, the disk is now available for preorder!
Thanks to alert reader Mike M. for the tip!
UPDATE 3: We’re now being told that the disks will not actually ship until Feb. 11. “Since this is a limited edition special run we need extra time to get the product ready,” our source said.
UPDATE 4: As several of our readers have discovered, the release of the disk has been delayed for at least 2-4 weeks. As soon as we can get some kind of definite date we’ll post it here.
UPDATE 5: Our source at Rhino now foresees a ship date of Feb. 25. Stay tuned…
UPDATE 6: Many, many readers have written in and posted on the Comments section here that they’ve finally received shipment confirmations from Rhino. Hurray! If you haven’t received yours yet, keep an eye on your inbox!
I wonder if that means my pre-order will be cancelled before it ships? I take back my taking back of my original comment and reinstate it.
Bugger.
“Good question NickfromPhilly
I think I remember the three VHS titles that came out first, I want to say they were Cave Dwellers, Pod People, and THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN. They could have been released as early as 1996.”
The back of my VHS of Pod People says the cassette was released in 1991, same year as the episode.
Also, I want Ernhardt to meet Frank and maybe a little bit of a hint as to how he “went missing.” But I know it probably will not happen.
I emailed Dr. Rhino before the link appeared here. Finally got a reply and the guy said they’re not licensed to sell it here. Haven’t gotten an email saying my copy won’t be sent though after pre-ordering it.
GersonK:
Thanks for the JoeCrow link!
Someday when I’m rich…
The back of my VHS of Pod People says the cassette was released in 1991, same year as the episode.
While I can’t say for certain that 1996 is the right date for the first Rhino VHS releases (and I was searching for this info here with no luck the other day – did I miss it?), I can *definitely* say that 1991 is incorrect.
I bought them all when they came out, and played them in my VCR. I didn’t own a VCR in 1991.
My copy of ACM says the episode was copyrighted in 91 and the video was in 96.
Okay, this turned into a minor quest for me…
According to the FAQ, “A: Rhino Home Video released about 30 episodes on VHS cassette beginning in 1997 but stopped producing VHS tapes a few years later when they converted to all-DVD sales.”
According to Amazon’s sales pages, Cave Dwellers, Mitchell and Amazing Colossal Man were released on April 30, 1996; Pod People and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die were released on October 1, 1996.
I can’t tell whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing that I don’t remember these facts.
Hey Guys:
Hey, you guys at Satellite News are the greatest! Thanks for the heads up! I already ordered it from Rhino, and it was great you let everyone know!
Rhino seems to be going out on a high note… reuniting Joel, the bots, Dr. F and TV’s Frank all on one disc.. most impressive!
Thanks Cubby for the info on Rhino’s first MST3K VHS releases.
Neil
P.S. I think the site saying “back order” is just its way of saying pre ordered…. I hope.
As long as “back ordered” doesn’t translate to “you ain’t gettin it” I’m okay. But I’ll feel better when I’ve ordered this tomorrow.
My local Best Buy had the 10.2 boxset out on the shelf since Friday. Score!
“Your back/special order has not yet arrived. Please know that we are working on getting it for you as soon as possible. As soon as it arrives, your order will be shipped! In the event the product becomes unavailable, we will notify you. Thank you for your patience.”
Dr. Rhino is way too apologetic. He may have to prescribe me some aspirin in the meantime.

I got this same email
Interesting since this isnt scheduled until 2/11
I think they may have massively underestimated the interest in this disc.
With a week to go, I’m hoping these back/special order notices are just auto-responds due to them processing pre-orders. I’ve never pre-ordered from Rhino, so this just might be the norm…
Has anyone that order before 1/31 gotten this notice too?
Got my notice this morning…. :?:
Same here….
… and here.

ditto.
Yeppers. Me too.
Sorry for the double post above. Don’t know what I did, but I won’t do it again.
got 10.2 today and immediately put in Gila Monster to see the new skit.
gave me the warm-fuzzies!
guess who does Tom’s voice…
It’s apparently Frank.
But whither Josh?
Got the same notice today. I called and the woman i spoke with said that there were a lot of orders. I asked how many orders for the single disc and she said: Over 1500 orders already.
Wow!
she didn’t know how long the wait for shipment would be but she seemed to think I would be in the first batch. That was when she said the Feb. 11th ship date was meetable.
we’ll see…
Dave
Would love to get the single disc from the website, but I don’t have a credit card. That’s a bit unfair…
I miss it when I thought I was the only one watching this damn show!
Everyone stop loving MST3K more than me!! Now!!
John W, doesn’t you mom have one? If so, what’s the problem here….
Got my confirmation email…that my order’s been cancelled as I’m a scabby non-American who isn’t allowed to see this!
radioman970, I’m a grown 36 year-old man who prefers to buy his own stuff while not being indebted to a credit card company for the rest of my life. There are plenty of online stores that allow for money orders or checks for payment. Seems shortsighted that Rhino doesn’t…
John W. I truly hear ya. I’m 41 and I’ve been debt free for a year and a half. It’s a good feeling. But I do have 2 credit cards that I rotate and pay off within a month for online purchases like this. I know it takes a lot of will power…and if you have a significant other…? Well, you sound like you do! They should at least allow the use of Paypal.
Well, I don’t care how long it takes for Rhino to sent this. I just completed the KTMA season. I’ve got a ways to go before I reach the mighty He-lah!!!
I will wait as long as it takes, but I did get the following e-mail which seems different then what you other folks got….
“Your back/special order has not yet arrived. Please know that we are working on getting it for you as soon as possible. As soon as it arrives, your order will be shipped! In the event the product becomes unavailable, we will notify you. Thank you for your patience.”
My pending CC charge was taken away from my online bank statement, so I am confused about what is going on?
But can anybody post more details on the skit with Joel? sounds like Trace was Crow and Frank? was Servo. But what was the segemt all about, and how long is it?
Hey John, do you have a debit card? Those work online.
Neil
I just got the 10.2 box set that had the Joel skit included (which I had originally questioned, but now I know). It is only a couple of minutes long and just talks about replacing the Godzilla movie (which they mumble to avoid saying) with the Gila Monster disk. It’s pretty funny and was shot in front of green screen (no sets) which was fun cause they actually had Servo hover
BTW, Joel and Frank have obviously aged while Trace is creepingly the same
T
I think the charge vanished because they havent sent the disc yet, when the send the DVD, they will take the 12.12 out of your account. Amazon does the same thing as do most companies, that you arent billed until they ship
I hope 2/11 is the day they ship the DVD
1500 copies, that is a lot for Rhino but for any studio 1500 isnt all that much
*buys Dr. Rhino a whore*
Hum…I might be getting mine first.
Thanks Rhino.
Update email

If you need to contact us, your order confirmation # is ………………
 Has anyone else received the same email or another saying shipped?
I did
I am really pissed again
Rhino should make enough discs for all the fans that pre-ordered them
They are so full of hot air
“we will make the single disc for a limited time”
So far they havent delivered anything but emails.
Im starting to get a bad feeling..
I replied back letting them know how I feel about this.
I bet a lot of us will have to get Volume 10.2 because Rhino cant deliver what they promise
I got this e-mail for a second time….
A lurker here, adding my five cents.
I got the same backorder e-mail, so I wrote and questioned them about the status of the DVD. I got this response back:
“We apologize for the delay in fulfilling your pre-order for . Please be advised that due to an overwhelming demand for this item, our entire initial stock has been depleted. This item is now on backorder pending its arrival from the manufacturer. We anticipate the delivery of most backorder items within 2-3 weeks. Your backorder item will be shipped out promptly upon its arrival, and you will not be charged until it is shipped to you.”
I ordered this item on the day it was first made available for pre-order. What, they only ordered five copies? How could the entire initial stock be depleted?
I wrote back asking them to double-check that. If the discs aren’t ready yet, they aren’t ready, but don’t give me a line about the initial stock being depleted on a pre-order that was made the first day possible.
Bet I get another stock response back.
Grr.
Oops! That should read: “We apologize for the delay in fulfilling your pre-order for GIANT GILA MONSTER.” The type of brackets they used around the movie title meant that it couldn’t be recognized here. Sorry!
Just heard back from Rhino. This is what they’re saying now:
“In response to your inquiry, please note that actually in checking the inventory it appears that we are waiting for the delivery to arrive at our warehouse to send to customer. Once the GIANT GILA MONSTER DVD’s have been received your order will be shipped to you. In addition please note that a confirmation email will be sent to advise you that the item is in transit to you.”
So it looks like it’s not ready yet, and Rhino (or at least this particular customer service rep) doesn’t know when it’s going to come in.
I got the email saying that my “backorder isn’t ready yet”. Ummm…wasn’t this pre-order? And since it’s pre-order shouldn’t they conceivably have SOME idea of how many they need to press, thereby allowing them to ship the item ON TIME? Has anyone actually reveived confirmation on the shipping? I mean, how can the stock be depleted if not a single soul has received one yet? At this point, I’m really starting to feel like the move to Shout! Factory is a step way, way up.
I think I was one of the first people to order the DVD, but I have twice received the backorder email. Frustrating.
I got the backorder email too….? I think they got overwhelmed with the response to this release!
Just talked to Rhino..told me 2-4 week wait….
Got the 2nd message as well.
2-4 weeks? You mean I have to wait??
*waits*
*feels good about it*
Hey, this isn’t that bad! I mean, at the end of my wait I’ll be singing along…”I sing whenever I sing whenever I sing whenever I sing”….yaaaayyyyyy!!
*waits some more*
As long as I eventually get it without having to re-purchase the other 3 disks in 10.2, I’m OK.
re #81: Don’t worry John W. The credit companies try to screw us in alot of ways, but as long as you pay off your balance at the end of the month, you won’t owe them anything. There’s a reason they call people who are financially responsible enough to pay off short-term debts “deadbeats” after all; the credit companies make most of their money off people who keep large debts running year after year.
Everyone else, I also ordered the disk on the day preorders were availble. Aslo got the message that I’ll get a message as soon as they ship the disk or tbey are unavailable to fill the order and cancel it. I worked for a while in a warehouse; I understand what it is like to deal with demand for a product that is not in stock.
