Never heard of it? Check out our primer on the Blog.
The typical reaction to an encounter with The Room looks something like this: puzzlement, revulsion, laughter, amazement, hunger, affection, deep depression, inability to digest milk proteins, and ultimately, an unbreakable addiction. Yes, this is the film you’ve probably only heard rumors about, a truly jaw-droppingly weird melodrama written, starring, produced, financed, endlessly promoted by (most famously by a high profile billboard in Los Angeles for five years), and featuring the hideous naked backside of Tommy Wiseau, the world’s shaggiest and most mysterious auteur. The Room’s plot seems mundane: a banker looks forward to his marriage unaware that his fiancé is cheating on him with his best friend. But beneath this quotidian veneer lurk peculiar treasures that almost literally defy description. Quite simply, you must see this.
Though this film is hard to come by your efforts to secure it will be richly rewarded. Mike, Kevin and Bill are honored to be able to join you for your first viewing of The Room.
[Note: The Room is rated “R” for some badly done, gauzy sex scenes, (and a few strangely hilarious instances of profanity), which is something we try to steer clear of here at RiffTrax. Yet, given the film’s many other strengths we ultimately decided not to let that be a disqualifier and instead to give the viewers ample warning to look away. And when we strongly encourage you NOT to watch these scenes we are not just being coy. You were warned.]
In other news: Janet Varney and Cole Stratton, who did the terrific “Dirty Dancing” riff last year have just completed recording their next one, for the movie “Ghost.” It should be available later this month, and if it’s anywhere near as funny as their previous one, this should be a winner.
How can you possibly dislike Disembaudio after the end credits of “Eragon”? I giggled insanely for like ten minutes.

I had never seen this movie, so I thought the Rifftrax was wonderful, and without it, I probably would have been too bored to withstand the movie. If it could be concentrated into about 10 minutes, then I could watch it on its own, but I don’t think it would be worth putting up with the drudgery just for the funny moments. With that said, I hope I never hear another Disembaudio skit again. It was painful, and not in a so-painful-it’s-funny sort of way.

I can see how the Disembaudio bits would be hard to stomach for any but a real hardcore Rifftrax fan who is used to Disembaudio and has come to see him as a secondary character. I thought the Disembaudio interjections felt a lot like old MST3K host segments.
I don’t understand how you could dislike the Rifftrax as a whole, unless you were predetermined to hate it, which is about what I expect from Sattelite News regulars.

Just watched it last night and I agree with everything Cronkite Moonshot says. This should have been great. It was not. I hated, hated, hated the Disembodio “skits”, and just thought they were an annoyingly childish cop-out to avoid actually watching the “love scenes” over and over in order to write the script. The “love scenes” are some of the funniest things in the movie and if your religion forces you to not expose yourself to that kind of thing, pick another movie, don’t assault my ears with a voice that has all the soothing of a steel wool cheese grater.

Thrifty, I was not predetermined to hate The Room Rifftrax. In fact, I was predetermined to love it. My girlfriend and I screen The Room every few months or so, and we were both looking forward to this. But it was a huge letdown for the simple fact that it just wasn’t as funny as the movie is non-riffed. I consider myself to be a “harcore Rifftrax fan” and I’ve always hated the use of Disembodio outside of synching the lines. The voice is worse than Hitler and the “actor” just isn’t funny. Whoever it is has the same desperate “please-laugh-at-me” line delivery as a latter day Mike Myers.

I think Erik is spot-on with his observation about people who like it and those who don’t. I had not seen The Room previously and loved the Rifftrax. Also, I watched it with two people who were not MSTies (one of whom HATED MST) and they were rolling. Having not listened to any non-VOD Rifftrax before this one, I was very pleasantly surprised. I’d rate it as the best movie/riffing combo I experienced since MST.
That being said, I agree that Disemaudio is SUPER annoying. Those sketches were a bummer, though not as horrible as what was on the screen.

Oh man I just saw it. So hilarious, even now I can’t stop laughing. Great work done by guys behind and before the camera. Wish to see more such works from them.

The Room is one funny movie in a strange way. If you got nothing else better to do and in a mood for a B grade movie, this is it.
