“What callbacks to the original show would you like to see in the revival?”
I would suspect they are going to light on these, but a few would be fun. A well-placed “hi-keeba,” for example.

I don’t think anything past the Joel era would be used, but if so…

If, like Dale, it’s a favorite culture-ref that may not be current today but lived on through MST3K riffs, that’s okay–
But if they’re going to reference old lines from another series that all fans are expected to know, quote and devote their lives to, regardless of whether it makes the slightest bit of sense to newcomers…that’s what RiffTrax does. It’s fan-whoring, it’s cult-of-personality, and it’s not really what Hodgson wants to do as long as it’s “his” series that he has a tighter control of behind the scenes.
Again, in the live CT shows, we get the occasional kidding about “Had to throw that one out for the fans, didn’t you?” (Eg. from East Meets Watts: “Hey, Joel–‘Rock climbing’.” “Hey Trace–‘Audience pandering’.”)
Hodgson’s conscious of fans quoting old lines, but since he hasn’t really watched that many of the CC shows he was in, he doesn’t really seem to understand the CC-era lines, and seems to quote them as some sort of thrown bone to the fans if it has to generate a little Kickstarter nostalgia–As opposed to the RT Guys, who not only assume every single person in the audience knows Space Mutiny references for every Cameron Mitchell film, but has been keeping up with the running cult Sharknado riffs as well.
There’s a feeling that Hodgson wants to do new material on the show, and that if he goes into old lines, it’ll just rub his retirement into his face. It’s about the new comic premise, not the old fairground favorites.
I went to a CT showing and Joel looked out at the crowd tentatively and said “WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES” almost like a question. I howled and laughed… and hardly anyone else did. I mean, there were people there with their Servos and Crows, real megafans, and it whizzed by like 90% of the audience.
A little part of me died, that night.

Nope. That trick never works.
I think there should be callbacks to old episodes to give a better sense of continuity. But I also get the impression that Joel doesn’t want to do callbacks, so that the new season will stand on its’ own. Maybe the writers will reference older seasons in the beginning, but phase that out once the new episodes have their own worthy callbacks?

Joel used this one when he had the choir to a Patrick Swayze Christmas a few years ago, so I think in light of what has been said about pandering, this one might be a possibility as Joel seems to remember it pretty well.
Not a specific callback, but I’d like to see a “Mads in the theater” episode, ala “Last of the Wild Horses” or “Delta Knight” to give Felicia and Patton some riffing time.

Okay, this one has been eluding me for years. I’ve seen Eegah at least 50 times, what is Stemlo? At what point in the movie does this happen? I must keep vortex-ing over that spot.
It’s one of the gibberish words Eegah uses when he’s “introducing” his family to Roxy.
I would love to see an appearance by Phantom of Krankor or Torgo :) And Nuveena, Woman of the Future.

I don’t quite understand why that would be a bad thing that certain riffs would fly by new viewers. One of the great things about MST3K is being able to grow into riffs as you learn more things. I didn’t start watching MST3K until it was on Scifi and there were plenty of riffs that were call backs to CC era episodes that I didn’t get but as got more interested and watched the earlier episodes and then got the reference it suddenly made more riffs funny because I knew the reference. It’s also the same with lots of riffs that you don’t have a clue where they come from and then one day you find out what it comes from and then that joke is funny. I say have plenty of references to older episodes, after all it’s a MST3K tradition and with the Internet I don’t see why new viewers just wouldn’t look up things anyway.
I wouldn’t want this to be used regularly, and it’d have to be in a different context than in the original series, but I think a well placed “What do you think, sirs?” would be cool.

I always though Tom and Crow were at their best when they were arguing like brothers. If brought out the best in both of them.
I’m all for callbacks, where the scene calls for it. If it’s a shot of a snake, the line could be “Watch out for me!”
I hope Crow is referred to as Art once in awhile.
I agree. A riff that calls back to a long-ago episode is no different than any other “obscure” riff. All that matters for ANY riff to work is that it be appropriate to the scene being riffed.

Maybe elaborate on her involvement in getting them the 2022 World Cup.
There seem to be two types of suggestions being offered.
One type consists of in-episode references such as “Watch out for snakes!” (a line from a character in an episode), or “Rock climbing!” (a reference from the host segments).
The other type are cultural references, such as “Chief? McCloud!”
I’m really okay with anything, as long as it’s funny and it fits. The cultural references in the old show worked for me because I’m in the same age range as the old cast. Well, a little older. But, I, too, watched Rocky and Bullwinkle and also understood McCloud references.
There’ll be a lot of new jokes I won’t get, but my grandchildren will. And that’s okay.
Two others have picked this up; one of the few recurring bits from Seasons 0 and One that I thought was authentically funny was “Thank you!” Not all the time, of course, but throw it in from time to time for us old guys.
I want the ‘bots to whistle the theme from the “NBC Mystery Movie” whenever there’s a flashlight on screen.
That opens up the possibility for noting the discontinuity in cultural knowledge that’s bound to surface between the original and this new show. The ‘bots could represent us, the older fans, the fans closer in age to the original creators, by simply pointing out that they were programmed by someone who grew up in the ’60s and ’70s.
I was watching Rambo 2 just now and there was a “What is kiss…?” moment. Would love that one to pop up.
Agreed. It’s about percentages; with hundreds of jokes per ep, the riffs will be all over the board, and not everyone will get every riff. And we all know, only “the right people” will get some of them. ;-)
So absolutely throw in a dash of “Classic MST3K” callbacks; in that case, “the right people” will be us! :laugh:
Even if not many callbacks make it into the final script for each episode, all the writers are lifelong Misties, so I’m sure they’re all still writing callback riffs from all seasons of the original series. Well, maybe not KTMA.
I would like to hear an occasional Dean Martin impression, which Josh used to do a lot (and I found funny)
I’d like them to make jokes about how dated some of the original jokes are now, especially bits from the host segments.
Say Jonah mentions liking some random 90’s band that never made it huge, and then Crow/Servo give him the business about how “he probably still listens to the Crash Test Dummies” or watches Renegade. I dunno, you figure it out.
I dunno, I listen to Mary Jo on the CT shows joking about how no one in the current movie-illiterate generation audiences gets the “You brought the birds, you’re evil!” ref anymore (“It’s from ‘The Birds’!”), and, like DJ, a little part of me dies too. More in the Frank Castle sense than the “depressed” sense, but a bit of both.
It just seemed to be a product of the SciFi/RT eras to snigger that anything of “your parents'” 70’s-90’s wasn’t “worth” knowing about anymore, it just took away from the intellectual appeal of the show that you were supposed to.
The humor shouldn’t draw age lines for What’s Smart, or take the easy Millennial route of picking on decades for being decades, that’s how it dug itself into a hole the last time.

One or two callbacks per MST3K reboot, CT, or RT doesn’t seem to be too out of line. As long as it is infrequent, and FITS, I don’t care (even if it is slightly pandering). Most of them listed here are worthwhile callbacks. I would prefer the callback be to actual movies than sketches, though. You know you want it, baby.

Re: the SELF-referential/callback: The old show never had a TON of these references anyways. You might get one or two per episode – occasionally 3 or 4. I could foresee them continuing to have some of the more popular ones. Remember, the new writers are mostly different from the old writers, so they might not be as familiar, but I am sure similar to rifftrax there will be one or two in each episode. (Even as a BIG fan that watched it from early on, I never really got that “HI-KEEBA” was referring to a Season 1 episode I had never seen. It was still funny that they would do it all the time though.) The simple fact is that most of the writers were fans of the original show, and I’m SURE they will want to throw the occasional reference in. Face it, there are 700-800 jokes per episode, I don’t think “new fans” will be bother by those 3 or 4.
The other side of things – the “riff they had used before” I am sure we’ll see some of those, such as “A planet where apes evolved from men!” or “By this time my lungs were aching for air” could easily come out.
My personal pick – It wouldn’t be MST3K without “I’M HUGE!”
When I saw CT perform Rattlers three or four years ago, the audience cheered at the “Watch out for snakes!” reference.
I hope they just do what’s funny.
