Weekend Discussion Thread: Eps Your Significant Other Enjoys

Alert reader Rick suggests:

Significant others. Don’t we love them? And, do they love our obsession with MST3K? My girlfriend of seven years was a MSTie Turkey Day fan in college, but beyond that had been away from the show until we met. She now is the proud owner of her own top 10 episode list (and beyond) and embraces my passion. Her number 1 episode: Angels Revenge.
So, what experiments does your significant other like? Or, are they more obsessed than you, or, not interested?

My wife is hearing impaired, and it’s hard to read a puppet’s lips or read the lips of a guy who has his back to you. So she’s not a crazed fan, but she likes the host segments (especially the Deep 13 segments) and definitely enjoys the ones that are being closed captioned by Shout. She particularly likes The Movie.

What’s your special person think?

Erich: Every time I watch MST3K, my wife will stop and watch for a few moments and laugh out loud at most of the riffs. She thinks J&tB and M&tB are very funny. Unfortunately she doesn’t “get” the host segments and doesn’t understand why the whole show can’t just be all riffing. However she did say just this morning she’d like to watch an entire episode with me. Since then I’ve been trying to think which episode has some of the best riffing AND host segments that really play up the show’s premise. I’m thinking something from the Mads era – Pearl/Bobo/Observer might be too bizarre for a first viewing. Any ideas?

Ah, the age old question of which episode makes the best starter episode. I’m not sure anybody has an end all be all answer to that question (and it probably would still depend on the tastes of the newbie being introduced to the show), but I do have a suggestion for your consideration: 416 – Fire Maidens of Outer Space. The host segments are great and all tied together by the Timmy plotline, and the concept of a “Dark Crow” isn’t hard to understand (though people who know Crow better as a character might get more out of it). Since your wife is already familiar with the show, this would be less of a problem than it would be for a true newbie. The movie is also very fun and cheesy.

I also didn’t quite “get” the host segments at first. It wasn’t until I watched 322 – Master Ninja I, with the “Master Ninja Theme Song” that it finally clicked for me (don’t ask me why!) But after I saw that host segment I started to enjoy them as much as the movie riffing. I don’t think it would work for everybody the same as it did for me though and I don’t think it’s as strong an episode as 416, so I wouldn’t suggest it as highly.

My wife will watch anything with a puppet in it, so she’s mostly ok with MST3k. There are limits; She is clearly more engaged the wierder or more absurd the movie, like Gamera Vs Guirion, Laserblast, Soultaker, Space Mutiny etc.

I’ve taken her to a couple Cinematic Titanic live shows (Doll Squad for one) and to some Rifftax, and she really enjoyed those, she especially loved “Anaconda”

While as I love me some Master Ninja 1 (it’s my favorite experiment), after years of watching, studying, and analyzing MST3K, I’ve come to the conclusion that newbies should start with 201-203, since those are referenced endlessly. And it gives a good solid base to build a fandom on.

As far as the MST3K.com fire sale, people on Reddit have a running theory that Jim is in the process of selling the rights to the show, and is liquidating his stock of merchandise before he can’t make money off of it anymore.

I know my husband well enough to know which episodes he will enjoy and which he can’t “handle” ( I would never even TRY to make him sit through something like Invasion of the Neptune Men for example. I can barely get through that and I have been a fan since the show aired on Comedy Central). He is definitely more of a Mike fan than Joel and he also loves Bill (he loves Rifftrax, much more so than MST). I would say Final Sacrifice is probably his favorite or maybe Parts the Clonus Horror.

Very interesting. Almost all of the merchandise at that site is gone now!
