RiffTrax Live: Your Thoughts?

An open thread for your thoughts on tonight’s show.

As always, we ask folks in the western half of the country to avert their eyes until after their time-delayed show, and for folks in the eastern half to go easy on the spoilers, or at least wait till after 11 p.m. eastern, when the westcoasters will be safely in the theater. And if you’re planning to see the repeat showing next week, well, just skip this thread altogether until then, I guess.

Our theater in Monaca, PA was quite empty because it was trick-or-treat night in our area, but we had a lot of fun. The short and National Geo preview were definitely highlights, more so than the movie. Although as mentioned above, the shorter duration of the movie was a BIG plus.
I think the riffs kinda petered-out about halfway through, but it was still fun. I got a kick out of Jon Voight’s continuous scowl that never changed – Yeah I guess we’re supposed to learn that he’s evil..
I think they did a great job fixing the sound this time – I could hear both the riffers and the actors – seemed perfect, at least at our location.
Loved Weird Al’s song about constipation, too :)

Justin Extreme: Where can I find this song for download? What is the story behind it? Thanks.

Rifftrax gave me the rights to post it, so I’ll be sticking it on YouTube shortly with the lyrics. Kevin took my idea and ran the full 100 yards with it. I’ll post a link here later tonight.

Awesome show. Saw it in Portland, with the theater being about 80% full. Bill’s flub at the beginning was hilarious, the Owen Wilson impersonations were great, and the movie had just the right amount of cheese. No problems with the audio at our theater.

I realized afterwards that they totally missed an “Eeegah!” call-back with the “Watch out for snakes” line. Probably too obvious, but I think it would’ve been a nice throwback.

Story: When Kevin emailed me asking for ideas for my Kickstarter song, I had been waffling between a few, but finally decided on one. It occurred to me a while back that directors of cheesy B-movies had a tendency to try to pad out their films by having the characters get separated and spend half an hour wandering around calling each other’s name while dodging stock footage of wild animals and white actors playing natives. I thought this might be a good idea for a Journey-style power ballad, especially since Kevin had made it clear that he enjoyed layering harmony tracks in a song. He loved the idea and went to work on it. A couple of months later, I awoke to an early Christmas present, with this file in my inbox. Hope all you fellow MSTie’s enjoy. It’s classic Kevin Murphy!

And now that RiffTrax has finally aired the live Anaconda, I believe I am not alone in finally saying:
FINE! THANK YOU! It’s OVER! You finally SHOWED it! Now stop e-mailing me EVERY DAY about it for the entire month up to the date!!!

(And we call RT thoroughly absorbed in their own hinders…How silly.
Although I still expect to get another e-mail post tomorrow saying “If you missed it last night, you can still buy Anaconda on disk!”)

Was in the Hazlet,NJ. Theater. They had a great deal of sound issues. First there was no sound during the pre-show. Then went to blaring and then no sound again once the show actually started. Sound came on at a normal level 2 minutes in. However, the sound would go out for about 2 seconds every 7 minutes. So I would miss a joke once in a while do to this error. Show was awesome despite the difficulties my theater was having though! Great job guys!

This one was great, way better than Godzilla for sure and Sharknado. I went in with no expectations because I had never seen Anaconda and knew absolutely nothing about it. Our Cinemark theater in Plano was only one-third to 40% full. No issues with the sound in our theater. I loved the short and am definitely looking forward to seeing Santa Claus and the Nat Geo episodes.

The guys are ambitious and trying to cast a wider net for a bigger audience with the “newer” big budget stuff. My preference is for older stuff like we saw on MST3K, so I thought the last few live offerings were a little off. Maybe it was the length of Sharknado or Godzilla, but I also think it was just that my expectations have been too high. I guess I need to just relax. In any case, last night’s show was right on target, and I will still take a night with Bill, Kevin, and Mike over the drivel the studios put out now that shows at the multiplexes. I am getting spoiled with all these live shows … keep ’em coming!

#40 – yeah, what was up with that metal chest? Voight sez something like it’s “treasure,” but what was it meant to be? Snake catching equipment? A real puzzler.

As a matter of fact, yes. The giant rolled up snakeskin was in it, as well as the animal tranquilizer & the pistol that seems to come out of nowhere a little later.

John Voight certainly seemed under equipped for the job.

When I first saw this I remember joking with friends how it seemed like Danny Trejo had read ahead in the script and decided he’d rather shoot himself in the head than remain in the movie.

I was there (in Durham), and it was fantastic. The set was impressive, and the Halloween short was the perfect blend of weird and not too long (The Home Ec Story has always been a tough one for me to get through, despite some killer jokes). I’d very recently seen Anaconda, and thought it was enjoyably ridiculous. The guys really helped amplify the “what-the” factor by pointing out all the continuity errors, plot holes, and everything like they do.

1 demerit: CT has really spoiled me with their meet-and-greets. I saw them twice, once with a very organized one, and once with a more casual one. I was really looking forward to meeting M, K & B (although what I’d read beforehand prepared me that it might not happen), but even being prepared didn’t take the sting out when we were told they had left the building (true or not, it was obvious we were gently being told to leave). I’m not offended or upset, just mildly disappointed. I wanted to say something nice and hopefully not stupid and have something to hang up next to my autographed CT poster.

But no, really, if you get a chance to see them in person, it’s a trip.

Great Kickstarter song, first of all. Nice to hear Kevin singing again. And this movie was the right length for riffing: just about 90 minutes so there could be a short or two. I felt sorry for Shep, seeing that weird pumpkin and that freaky mask. Also looking forward to more NatGeo Riffing! Anaconda was perfect: over the top, stupid, and chock full of stuff for the boys to riff on. Well done gentlemen.

I thought it was really great! Even liked it a bit more than Godzilla I think. Loved when Bill pointed out the reversed waterfall.

However I think I’ll be skipping the Santa Claus riff in December, I think the MST3K episode it fine as it is, and I don’t really care for yet another re-riff.

The riffers’ audio was WAY too loud. For God’s sake, they’ve had SO MANY TRIES to get the audio issues worked out. Can’t you guys get it right for once?

If you’d read through these comments, you’ll see that some people had audio too loud while others was just right. We send the same exact audio signal to every theater, but your individual theater has the ability to make their own mix. If your theater is too loud, you can go to the customer service desk and ask them to turn it down. We can only do so much from our one location. I’m sorry the audio was too loud but there are many moving parts to a production of this size. Thanks.

EDIT to add: It may be a lot too ask, too, but during the show if your theater seems to be having a technical issue, such as volume or audio problems, it’s highly advised to tweet @FathomEvents (if you are on Twitter of course) and let them know about it – and mention your theater and city. We can’t monitor every theater, but if we start hearing that a lot of theaters are having audio that’s too loud, we won’t know about it unless people mention it. This is the first time I’ve read about the issue, to be completely honest, and so it’s a little surprising to me.

Argh, I tried to go back to fix my stupid grammar mistake. No luck.

What’s also surprising since we have people monitoring feedback in real time both in Colorado and location, and there were no complaints anywhere to be seen about the volume level. It is only now, days after the fact, that I’m hearing about it. Apologies again if your enjoyment was impacted.

I went to show in Flint, MI- there were 35 people there. The sound was a bit loud and muddy at first, but as the show progressed it seemed to improve (or, I adjusted). By the time the show was over, I was ready for more. This movie and riffing got better as the night went on. Overall, another success. I look forward to the December show.

Saw it at the Cinenark Webb Chapel in Dallas, one of several theaters in the DFW area that was showing it. audience about 1/4 full. volume was also incredibly loud, but the actual balance of riffer volume to movie volume was 100% perfect. everything else about the experience was also 100% perfect – best one they’ve ever done. I enjoyed the hell out of this.

now Rifftrax needs to put up for order some baseball caps & t-shirts saying “I’d rather have a cap in my ass than a fish up my dick”. I’d buy that!!!

Volume was fine in Atascadero CA. Godzilla had some problems with all the explosions drowning things out, but Anaconda was all good.

Erik@Rifftrax – I guess you don’t understand, then – I want a Rifftrax representative to come to my theater, monitor the sound levels, and then make adjustments as needed so that I don’t have to get up or walk or move or expend any calories in any way.

Missed “Anaconda” the first time around (I went to a retirement party at work), but I caught the repeat last night. I’m glad the riffing was so good, because the movie was awful.

So was there no “Watch out for snakes” ref, or did I miss it?

The cashier warned me that it wasn’t a regular screening of Anaconda. He said he had to issue some refunds last week.

  23. Kenneth Morgan says:

Oh, I did have one nervous moment before the movie. At the box office, I said I was there for Rifftrax, and the cashier didn’t know what I meant. Then, I mentioned that they were showing “Anaconda”, and he realized what I meant. Apparently, it was listed on his screen by the movie name, rather than as Rifftrax.

And we briefly lost audio during the pre-show, so I calmly told a manager, he said he’d see to it, and no problem.

What you ask is impossible, I’m afraid. Given that most theaters set their volumes super loud for whatever the latest blockbuster is, we’re pretty much at their mercy. If the volume is super loud, your best bet would be to hop on Twitter and let Fathom know – they can get on the phone and communicate with the theater directly to have them make an adjustment.

But since this issue is always on a per-theater basis it’s pretty difficult for us to intuit when there is a problem without feedback from someone at the theater. It’s unfortunate but that’s just how these events work.

Got to see it on the second showing last night.
    Small audience but very responsive.
The theater started the presentation at 7:00 by mistake, which was fine by me as I always get there early to see the pre-show stuff.
Then they discovered their mistake, put up the slides, and restarted the show at the right time.

Very Very bad movie making for great Riffs. Lots of hard laughs, more so than most of the recent shows.
I could not believe how bad this movie was with such a good cast.

Saw it on the Thursday broadcast, and am surprised at the number of people having issues with the audio…this show was spot-on perfect in the audio mix! Much better than Godzilla and Starship Troopers in that regard. Saw it at AMC in Olathe, KS…theater was probably about half to 2/3 full. Thought it was the best overall riff beginning to end that I’ve seen these guys do!

I went to the replay and got there early to watch all the title cards.
I was the only one in the theater, so I sat in the middle of the middle, on the first row where the stadium seating begins.
Closer to start time, 2 dudes come in. The entire theater is empty besides me.
Where do they sit? Row directly behind me and maybe a few seats over. Before it starts, 2 women come in and sit right behind me. 5 people in a theater. Give a row of space or something. Once one of the guys starts laughing I recognize the laugh from the last Rifftrax show. Luckily, they were real fans and laughed and didn’t just come to talk. 1 other person came in.

Sound was super loud there. Enough to give me a slight ear buzz. It wasn’t immediate when the show started. At some point I just could feel my ears starting to buzz. One of the other guys had already had to get up and tell them to turn the lights down. They were on through the shorts and the opening credits.

The thing with sound – I never know if it’s just me or not, so I hate to ruin the experience for other people. I also hate to miss any of the show. I’m always afraid I will miss ‘the scene’ when something is revealed. (What, Luke is his father?)

Wow, so if I tweet Fathom they will call the theater immediately?
But that also makes you the ‘annoying guy who messes with his phone.’

Um, no. DO NOT encourage people to “tweet” during a movie. If there’s a problem, you either deal with it or get up and tell the theater staff. Playing around on phones or tablets is a big no-no during a film.
