I like this version better than the MST3K episode. There, I said it, and I’d say it again if I had to.

If you watch the short, you’ll understand.

    For JRB again:

I read your definitions, and if Joel and the rest of the CT’s truly think they can do a better job with Santa than MST3K, then that kind of is elitist in a way. It is one group of people pridefully thinking that they can do a better job with riffing on a movie

For the record, I don’t know if Joel or any of them feel this way, and it’s more likely than not that they don’t. But if there is a smidgen of that elitist mentality in their decision to do an out of the blue “re-do” of an MST3K episode, then I think I have the right to use that term.

You know, I should really just relax.

I still have to take issue with the use of elitism–that would mean every sports team is elitist for thinking they can beat another team, and every self-indulgent singer who thinks he/she is the best is elitist.

I think, assuming your take on CT’s attitude is right–which I doubt, as they’ve said it was an experiment–then arrogance would be a better term (among others). I see it more as healthy self-competition.

I normally don’t like to split hairs over grammar/diction on message boards, but ‘elitism’ has been abused a lot as of late and I wish it weren’t.

And, having just sat down and watched it, I can say that it’s definitely worth the ten bucks to download. There were a few moments where it was hard to get the memory of the “correct” riff out of my head (every time the Martians greeted each other, it was hard not to say, “Headbutt”, for example)…

But there were a lot of great new riffs, there’s some great delivery in there, and the opening sequence, with Trace attempting to flee the theater when he discovers what the movie is, was a major winner with the whole household. My only real complaint is that they went down to just one sketch for this one; I still think they should be doing three, but so far it’s been 4, 2-ish, 2, 2, and 1.

But on the whole, worth what I paid for it, will be getting some rewatches, and I’m going to again say that I had an excellent experience downloading instead of buying the physical DVD. Started the download before going to bed (I work nights), started the burn before I fixed breakfast, and so I basically got it done in no time at all. And it was cheaper, too. That’s a good deal to me.

an FYI to anyone who likes getting movies on MST without the riffing….Walgreen’s Pharmacy has a $2 DVD with both “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” and “Santa Claus” on it, along with a third movie called “Joe Santa Claus”. Hey, for that little amount for such Christmas cheese, why not?

Maybe next year they can do, “Once Upon a Christmas” with Kathy Ireland?

    Eeeek!

I dont Mind the idea of re-riffing old stuff, but if they are going to pick one movie that needs re-riffed, it would have to be Robot Monster.

I ordered the DVD. What can I say, I’m a nerd.

Can’t imagine anything funnier than ‘lentils’

Missed some of the original riffs, but “Chuck Berry, no!” when Voldar gets it in the mug with a stream of water killed me.

Overall, a strong episode. Better than the MST3K version? Too close to call.
