What song on the show, either a Best Brains original or a flavorless musical missive in one of the films (I’m looking at YOU Dick Contino), do you think might benefit from a cover treatment by a popular band/artist? My thoughts are Green Day punking up “Toobular Boobular Joy” or Fiona Apple getting moody and broody covering “Yipes Stripes” from #514 Teenage Strangler.
I’d like to hear what Elvis Costello could do with “Sodium.”
What’s your pick?
This may be my very favorite thread ever on this site. I fell out of my chair reading these inspired pairings and wished that this parallel universe existed. By the time I got Aphex Twin/Shine Your Love it was all over. Brillz.

Bob Dylan doing “Fish Picker”. Since you don’t really know what the guy is singing in the first place, it wouldn’t matter.

Speaking of “The Deadly Bees,” I would have loved to hear what Amy Winehouse could have done with Vicki’s “Stop the Music.” Actually, it might not have been that bad….
(Btw, GREAT weekend discussion!)

Brad “Crash Test Dummies” Roberts singing not only “Night Train to Mundo Fine” but also the collected works of Digger Smolken.

Return to Forever covering the “Manos” soundtrack could be a Grammy winner.
Scott Stapp covering “Do You Want to Laugh or Cry?” would probably evoke both of those responses.
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones rendition of “Tobacco Worm” and “Stratosphere Boogie” would be good. Seriously.

I would love to see Weird Al Yankovic do a polka medley of the “Werewolf (TUSK!) Credits Medley”.

If we had a time machine, Michael Jackson doing “Let Me Be Frank About Frank”, Clannad doing “Air On a Delta Knight”, James Taylor doing “California Lady”, Barry Manilow doing “The Janitor Song”, The BeeGees doing “Shine your Love” and Josh Groban doing “Tibby, Oh Tibby”.
I had to make myself stop after a point, or I would vapor lock.

The obvious one is Paul Williams doing ‘Let Me Be Frank About Frank.’ I could also see that one being covered by Steve Lawrence and Edie Gorme.
Still waiting for the perfect cover of ‘Hooray For Santa Claus.’ I think either Shonen Knife or Devo might swing on it, or perhaps they could collaborate.
Or maybe Brave Combo on the sock hop song from THE CREEPING TERROR.

My vote is for Janet Klein to give a 1920s-styled rendition of “When I Held Your Brain In My Arms” while playing her ukulele. If I could hear that, I could pretty much die happy.

How about the Jet Jaguar Song (with translated lyrics) performed by William Shatner?

@ #7 as long as we are taking the time machine back to record with The Ramones maybe they could do the “Killer Shrews” song while they are at it.

Frank Black (of The Pixies) would do a cover of “Let me be frank about Frank” because, well, of course, duh…..

I would like The Smiths to get back together specifically and only to cover the Smiths rip off song from Pod People. Afterwards they can go back to being cranky old men.

Well, “What a Pleasant Journey (The Train Song)” from The Girl in Lovers’ Lane would be awesome by Woody Guthrie (because, once again, of course it would), and oh yeah, today would’ve been his 100 birthday, so there is also that..

“The 5:15 from Duluth
Oh my! It just derailed!
The toxic waste is spillin’,
the conductor’s been impaled.
A benzine cloud has risen
and the whole town’s startin’ to cough. (Joel and Tom cough in rhythm)
Within in a matter of daaaaaaays,
All of our skin will fall off.”

All of the California Lady ideas (good, very good, don’t get me wrong) got me thinking too:
The Swell Season (Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová) would do a nice spare version.
Gordon Lightfoot* and Alison Krauss** could really wring the melancholy out of it.
If we had a time machine, I’d say we let Lobo sing it.
*though it’s not about Canada, so I don’t know why he’d bother
**with or without Union Station

I’d bring Bing Crosby back for a rendition of “When I Held Your Brain in my Arms”
Gwar for “Who Will I Kill?”
Blue Oyster Cult for the Del-Aires’ “Zombie Stomp”

I would like to hear the Oingo Boingo version of the Mst3k Love Theme.
The Swingle Singers could do a rendition of the “Bap-pa-dap-da-da-da” de Danger, Death Ray!
The Boston Pops version of the Fugitive Alien Medley.
Neil Patrick Harris version of Last Train to Mondo Fine (weird, I know).
A Falco version of “Chick out of shape” or whatever that song was called, from the Dennis Steckler movie.

Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton John doing the Fugitive Alien Medley from Fugitive Alien II… and a mumbled curse to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres for putting Xanadu in my head. Perhaps I can chase with by dreaming of Aphex Twin’s Shine Your Love.

Whenever I want to cry and bawl because I’m feeling sad
I think of ironing boards and drywall and then I don’t feel so bad!
Whenever I’m feeling down and blue and sorry for myself
I get some staples and some glue and I’m happy as an elf!
Whenever I start to mope and pout and there’s nothing left in my soul
I check the toilet paper and if we’re out I buy another roll!
Have you ever touched a Post-it Note? Have you ever looked at boots?
Have you ever sat down in a chair? Have you ever used a paper clip?
So if you listen to our advice and you wanna feel terrific!
Do things that make you feel nice, I wish we could be more specific!

Harry Connick Jr. covering “Gold” from Girl in Gold Boots. It’s the song Michele is dancing to at the start of the movie.
GWAR covering “They Tried to Kill Me with a Forklift” from Fugitve Alien.
Great thread, by the way. Aphex Twin/Shine Your Love. Someone needs to make that happen.

What an awesome topic!! Many of these responses are both funny and inspired. I’d like to add my suggestions, if I may…
Dick Dale doing anything by Jimmy Bryant. Although their playing styles are somewhat similar, I think Dale would give “Ah So” in particular an extra flair.
Tom Jones doing The Beau Brummels’ “Woman”, mainly because that topic seemed what Mr. Jones sang about best.
I’d also like to see the mid-60’s version of The Kinks do The Del-Aires’ “Zombie Stomp”. I can practically hear Dave Davies making that wailing sound in the middle of the song.
Speaking of music, I’d like to suggest as a future thread (if it hasn’t been done yet) what musical singer, performer, or group would you best associate MST3K with and why? For me, it would be The Kinks. Imo, their music was clever, at times sarcastic, sardonic, funny, and vastly underappreciated by the mainstream.

Even Arthur Godfrey would have to concede he’s better then Michelle.

Sorry, but if there’s a band which should sing that powerful 70’s anthem that was “Shine Your Love”, it should be ABBA.

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits (circa their 1980 Making Movies incarnation) could’ve done a really cool blues verion of the MST3K theme. You’d lose the “la la las”, but the 3 minute guitar solo would make up for it.

I would like to throw an important question out there: has ANYONE ever heard of ANY band doing ANY cover either from a MST3k episode or from any of the movies????

Why yes number 88 – I have! The Crawling Hand features the song “Surfin’ Bird (The Bird is the Word)” which was not too long ago covered by Seth MacFarlane as Peter Griffin in a great episode of “Family Guy.”

I admit Seth MacFarlane isn’t a “band,” per se…
