Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3K Monopoly? And more?

Alert reader Trevor asks:

Have you ever noticed how many different editions of Monopoly there are? Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a MST3K one?

Yes, it would! Maybe the spaces would be movies? Let’s hear your ideas. He also asks…

What products (besides t-shirts) would other MSTies like to have a MST3K version of?

Lots of budding entrepreneurs are listening….

There should be a MST3K “Scene It” game. It would have a mix of scenes from the movies and scenes from the Mst3k segments. I would so buy one!!

Well, every year they come out with a new box set of ‘theme’ Pez dispensers. One year it was STAR TREK, with the heads of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc.
Another year, WIZARD OF OZ. And last year, LORD OF THE RINGS. How about an MST3K set? They could have Joel, Mike, Crow, Tom, Gypsy, Doctor Forrester, Pearl, and TV’s Frank. (Sorry Bobo, and Brain Guy, they only have eight.)

I was thinking like a Satellite of Love flash drive? Either that or like those things you stick on the wall, they have batman, spiderman things like that, why not a SOL version?

  4. The Right Oily Drifter says:

In my version of MST Monopoly, I would have the tokens be Joel, Mike, Tom, Crow, Gypsy, and Cambot. The properties would reference imfamous locations from the movies, such as Valley Lodge and Club Scum. I liked the idea of SciFi and CC as the utilities, as well as Movie Sign! for Go. Free parking would be Commercial Sign. Chance would tie in applicable riffs/moments from the show. Community Chest would involve the invention exchanges. The jail would be the SOL, the railroads would be shorts, I guess. On the money I’d have portraits of our favorite movie characters(Torgo on the $1, Rowzdower on the $20, etc.)

    By Marx!

Also, since somebody earlier mentioned the idea of an MST video game, I want to mention that such a thing kind of exists. On Playstation 3 there is a game called Little Big Planet. For those of you unfamiliar its basically a game where the player can quite literally create their own gaming experience from the ground up, which can be shared with the online community. Some people have actually constructed MST3K themed levels which can be played by anyone who has the game.

Lots of good ideas already. Besides the Monopoly game, I’d love MST3K Trivial Pursuit, Lego sets, and plushies.

I’ll tell you what is really needed, though, and which seems like it would be do-able: a complete, updated edition of “The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide.” I have a copy of this and it’s a fantastic read but it only goes up through Season 6.

    Whaddya think, sirs?

@42 – And then mix sets and have them battle Joel’s Rat Pack chess set from “Magic Voyage of Sinbad”…Mike vs. Sinatra! :)

@3 – And the ever-present question of who’s going to be Baltic & Mediterranean Ave.:
    Elsinore Castle? Novicorp?
(And I love the idea of the Valley Lodge as Jail, but wouldn’t it be “Somebody Needs a Time-Out”?)

I’ve given it some thought. Here’s what I figure for an MST3K chess set.

    WHITE PIECES:
King- Joel & Mike (two-sided piece)
    Queen- Gypsy
    Bishop- Tom Servo
    Knight- Crow
    Rook- Cambot
    Pawns- Nanites

    BLACK PIECES:
    King- Dr. Forrester
    Queen- Pearl Forrester
Bishop- TV’s Frank & Larry Earhardt (one each)
    Knight- Observer
    Rook- Bobo
    Pawns- Mole People

    How’s that?

Oh, and I heartily agree with a revised & expanded ACEG.

I’d like to see an MST3K app, that lets you organize and rate your collection, collect quotes, integrate with blogs, feeds and and social networks, maybe a couple of games, dvd sleeve art creator, video editor for giving the MST3K treatment to your own movies, and much more! So someone get right on that, okay?

As for other products…Collectors Cards, Action Figures(I have the Tom, Crow and Gypsy that came with the Shout sets and they are great, don’t get me wrong. But fully poseable figures with accessories would be even better), costumes, film cells, the possibilities are endless.

I actually thought about making an MST3K Monopoly a few years ago. ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ were replaced with ‘Hikeeba!’ and ‘Oh Poopie!’. ‘Go To Jail’ was instead ‘Go To Ward E’. Utilities were the SOL, the Escape Pod, the Umbilicus, and Pearl Forrester’s Van.

I’m not much of a board game player, but i’d probably still get one if it was decent.

As for other inventions, I have been toying with the idea for a while of creating full size, speaking models of tom and crow which would be driven by servo motors and a microcontroller. with enough design, maybe even have them perform voice recognition of the dvds and lipsync their lines.

Jail should be Ward 6, I guess…did anyone suggest that yet?

And what about the railroads and utilities?

A head cold is dampening my creativity tonight.

But it’s funny, I just played monopoly for the first time in many many years a couple of weeks ago. (I had Park Place and Boardwalk both but went bankrupt…go figure). A vintage addition we had as kids.

I think for the chess set you need 2 eras

Era 1, Joel and bots + other ‘good characters’ vs dr F, Frank plus other ‘evil’ characters from movies (say valaria Torgo anyone else impersonated)

Era 2, Mike and bots + other ‘good characters vs Perl, brainguy bobo + other ‘evil’ characters, pitch, ortega,

this way you could have early good vs late evil, early evil vs late evil, early good vs late good, and well you get the drift. If you make each team a different color (white grey black red?) then it could really almost be a 4 way chess board

    OH THE HUMANITY!

A complete set of PDFs is located here: http://www.mst3kdb.com/ACEG-P2.pdf. (I’m hoping it’s ok to include that link? As it goes to a different web site…)

I have always wanted to combine my second favorite show after MST, THE LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN, with CLUE… but now I’m thinking about MST3K clue!

    Pearl as Mrs. Peacock
Tom Servo as Miss Scarlet (’cause he looks good in drag)
    Mike as Mr. Green
    Joel as Professor Plum
    Gypsy as Mrs. White
Crow as Colonel Mustard (“I did it!”)
    TV’s Frank as Mr. Body

I’d make it like SIMPSONS CLUE and have the rooms be locations:

    1. SOL Bridge
    2. The Mystery Science Theater
    3. Gizmonics Institute
    4. Deep 13
    5. Ape World
    6. Observer’s Planet
    7. Ancient Rome
    8. Cheese Factory
    9. Castle Forrester

    Weapons:

    1. Film Reel
    2. Clown Hammer
    3. Crow’s Mother
    4. Observer’s Brain
    5. Nanite
    6. Hamdinger

Me and my wife always thought it would be a hoot to have a MST3K expansion to Magic: The Gathering cards. Some examples (I’ll limit it to Manos for demonstration purposes)-
Torgo: 1/1 human that gets +2/+2 is The Master is in play, but has to be sacrificed in 2 turns.
The Master: 3/3 human, First Strike, tap to gain control over one target creature.
Fifi The Wonder Poodle: 0/1 creature, sacrifice to avoid all damage this round.
Staff of Manos: Artifact, tap to remove all other artifacts from play (Manos has no use for such devices!)

Not sure how many in this thread are familiar with Magic, but even if you have not played it you can still appreciate the comic possibilities :p

Expanding on my earlier post on the possibility of MST3K Fluxx, here are some card idea.

Keepers and Creepers would probably consist of the MST3K cast as well as some of the more memorable characters from the movies and certain items and props.

    Goals
    Sleazy Sidekicks (Torgo and Ortega)
They Shot Him Into Spaaaaace (SoL and either Joel or Mike)
Get On With This Week’s Invention Exchange (Dr. F. and Joel)
You Are To Us As An Amoeba Is To You (The Observers and one SoL crew member)

    Actions
Push The Button Frank (Rules Reset)
To The Left! To The Left! Dickweed! (everyone passes their card hand to the player on their left)

    New Rules
Is This A Weirdass Hootnanny All Of A Sudden? (sing a couple of lines from an MST3K song when drawing to get an extra card)

    More later.

What I would’ve liked to see, or maybe will see one day (perhaps in another plane of existence) is…. a Mystery Science Theater 3000 Playset!!! Fully poseable action figures of Joel, Mike, Tom Servo (complete with unworkable arms), Crow, Gypsy and Cam-Bot, too. Representing the Gizmonic/Deep 13 side would be Dr. Forrester, Larry, T.V.’s Frank, Pearl Forrester, Brain-Guy and Bobo.

Two playsets could be offered: Gizmonic/Deep 13 (with changeable signs/appliques to suit any era fan’s tastes) and… the Satellite of Love, with rooms for Tom, Crow and Mike, the “staging” area (with the buttons) and a “theater” for Joel/Mike and the ‘Bots. The “theater” could have connections where you could connect a DVD/Blu-Ray player or computer so you can play “movies” on the screen…. and pretend the guys are riffin’ the movie! Perl’s van-ship could be a vehicle that could be made.

The action figures should be the 5″ or 6″ variety. This will enable playsets to be reasonably constructed, cost-wise (sort of like what Kenner did with the Star Wars line, or what Mego did with the “Pocket Super-heroes” line back in the late 1970s). And, because they are evil… EVIL… each Gizmonic/Deep 13 action figure could come with a “part” of another figure that, when put together, creates…. “Johnny Long Torso” (“The man who comes in pieces! He’s long.”) or, perhaps, creates…. MONAD! (“What– did you say something imperfect???”)

I know I’m blue-skying right now but, even at my age, if these were offered, I’d buy them and play with them all!! In the not-too-distant-future? I don’t think so!! :-)

I gotta throw in a “completely agree” for The Mr. B mudflaps, an updated episode guide, and Ralph C.’s playset sounds like tha bomb!!!! I imagine Jerry and Sylvia and Torgo would be “chase figures’, or maybe there’d be ones that you have to send in proofs of purchase to get, like Torgo The White, Timmy, and Krankor. Oh, and we need one of Jack Perkins, or “Your Host” as he was called.

The “Tragic Moments” collection was a great idea.

Or, some kind of iPhone MST role playing game where the various legs of your quest are based on the movies. For example, you would negotiate stopping for flapjacks, descending mountain grades, and joining forces with your cracker buddy in the Riding with Death segment. Then, you might go on to avoid getting gut-shot by the Circus on Ice, and so on. The goal being to escape the SOL.

I’ve never really liked Monolopy. Kind of boring. An MST Monoploy set would be something I’d buy, but I’d never play it. Now, MST Clue… that’d be something else..

Actually, the merch I’d want to see is a vinyl releasing of all the songs from the show, on a double LP set, gatefold cover, extensive liner notes, etc..

Also, a new complete episode guide/history of the show Mega Book would be a must have for me.

I had brought up an MST3KOPOLY a while back on the Discussion Board. I think it was in “General Chat”. It must be way down on page 58 or thereabouts by now. Like #17 I got Make Your Own Opoly. They have a website, I think it’s just makeyourownopoly.com or something, so anyone who wants to do an MST3K one can just go nuts. :)

I had a few cards made up like:

(on the myopoly version I have it has good news and bad news cards)

    Bad news:

Servo does your taxes, pay $1500

Lose Swing Choir competition, pay $100

You didn’t get the flippin’ Sampo, raise the failure sails, each property owner pays $100

    Good news:

Harness the power of RADAR! – collect $500

You didn’t steal no bike, neither, collect $100

You have a Patrick Swayze Christmas, collect $100 from each player

    Leave the Bronx! collect $100

I listed a whole bunch more on the Discussion Board, and a lot of other posters put in a whole bunch of other great suggestions.

There’s some art you can insert onto the squares and I used some for some of the properties:

There’s a waterskier (watershe-er?) that I put for Catalina, a castle for Castle Forrester, handcuffs for Girlstown, a horse for Kobasan, a doghouse for Painted Hills, an arrow pointing down for Deep 13, an airplane for Cherokee Jack’s airport, a flammable sign for Gizmonic Institute (I was running out of artwork – you can insert your own, but I was using the ones included), another stately looking building for Jack Taylor’s Place, a vicious looking Doberman for Valley Lodge, a spiderweb for Winky’s Basement, another castle for Castle of Fu Manchu, a slice of pizza for Torgo’s Pizza.

Some other properties with no art are a Vacant Lot; Circle Pines; Spooner, Wisconsin; War-torn, the Bronx, Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders, Clonus, Village of the Giants.

I have Droppy the Water Droplet for one of the utilities.

The free space is a sylvan glen.

    Start is the SOL.

Lose a Turn, I guess jail, is the Agony Booth.

I have it saved on my computer and I printed some stuff out, but I haven’t put it together yet. I just have round tokens for the, well, tokens, but it would be nice to have actual figurines.

I just have the main characters for that:
Joel, Mike, Crow, Servo, Gypsy, Cambot, Dr. F, TV’s Frank, Pearl, Bobo, Brain Guy.

For the money I have MST3K bucks, with a picture of a movie reel on it.

It might be fun to play if I ever get around to it.

Is there anyone out there whom actually is both reading this, and in a position to act on an idea and see it through to retail? Like on Mad Men? Or maybe Shark Tank? (” The Shark Men Vs. The Mad Tank!” Rated R! Starts Friday!) If you’re there, O’ great intellectual property holder and rich investment banker, I have two suggestions for you. And guess what? They’re actually NOT suggestive double entendres for once!

    • • • File under: seemingly obvious potential monetary bovine; I’d almost suggest pressing formal charges against the Allmighty, Himself for never compelling someone somewhere to create an official toy or “action figure” line for the show. Nothing too expensive, but lovingly crafted with us MSTies in mind. Just like the show itself.

    • • • File under: putting the ‘blu’ in Bluray (joke works better when spoken, and even then, not really); As we all (probably) know, “Manos: Hands Of Fate” is finally on it’s way to blu-ray. So how about a little cross-promotion so to speak.
4 words: Guest starring Cinematic Titanic!
That’s right! The CT crew could RE-riff Manos just like they did with Santa Conquers the Martians! Then put it on the official HD Manos disc as a “bonus”… Or vice versa. This idea is good for everyone. The press already loves the Manos restoration process, and gets mentioned all the time in the entertainment press. An article about MST3K and Manos being reunited like an old rock band to riff along to the restored film writes itself. Really. I’d bet that a slightly more expensive set with both would sell a lot more copies than if they were released separately, and years apart from each other. So go for it! There are not enough people in this country that are even aware that CT exists! Never mind Eithopea and world hunger, man… Someone needs to argue the case to bring CT or Rifftrax or some combination thereof to cable television! I won’t give up hope that MST3K reruns, or Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax offshoots, could maybe find their way back to the good ‘ol Satalite Of Love…a man can dream…or he can get loaded and wrap himself around a utility pole. Take care, buddy!

First, I’ve never played Monopoly before. Second, I like the idea of publishing an updated ACEG, with the mistakes from the first edition fixed. I’m glad to know that there are others who still like actual paperback books. Here’s my list of merchandising possibilities. Some might not be great but I’m throwing out ideas as they occur to me.
    1. Framed Prints of The Master’s portrait from Manos.
    2. A poopie suit. I’m joking.
    3. Die-cast models of the many vehicles-Prince of Space’s ship, the rocket ship from Phantom Planet, etc.
    4. The evil monkey plush toy with cymbal.
    5. Full-scale Crow with several costumes (bear, Bellerian, Solarite, any others I might be forgetting).
    6. Good-quality clothing: Joel and Mike’s jumpsuits, Forrester’s lab coat, Observer’s cape, Frank’s black uniform, The Master’s cape, etc.
    7. A book that collects the original movie posters for every experiment (excluding made-for-tv stuff I guess) and features one poster for each page.

I hate Monopoly, and well meaning friends keep giving us themed sets for Christmas.

This is the best idea on here:

    “How about a MST3K DVD collector’s case,

To save room I put all my MST discs in a large 3-ring
binder. (I don’t have enough shelf space for the individual

While I currently have room for all my sets, we’re trying to downsize and I’m planning on putting my discs in a binder, but I’d love a MSTie themed one. Wonder if Shout! could make that happen since it wouldn’t really need episode rights?
