Weekend Discussion Thread: What Episodes Should Shout! Re-Release This Year?

Alert reader Kris writes:

What episodes should Shout Factory release, or re-release, in 2012? Or beyond? Boy, so much to choose from, right? Immediately, I’d say the big ones are “Mitchell” and “Diabolik,” but I’d also love to see re-releases for “Time Chasers,” “Bloodlust!” “The Deadly Mantis,” “Danger! Death Ray” and “Quest of the Delta Knights.

Here’s a vote for episode 506- EEGAH!

What’s your pick?

I’d love to see Pod People and Cave Dwellers as re-releases, and a boxed set of the 4 “Shorts” DVD’s. -and I think there’s enough interest that Shout ought to consider including the unMSTied versions on some of these re-releases (especially as a number of these films haven’t made it onto DVD yet).

In a perfect world I’d like them to release my top 4 episodes in one box set. Robot Monster, Hercules vs the Moon Men, Time Chasers, and Teenagers From Outer Space. It’d be called the JimmyBruce Special.

Is there any point in buying episodes? unless there are new or interesting bonuses, we can watch nearly all the shows on Netflix or YouTube……I bought one set just so I could get the mini Servo figure, but its doubtful that i’d do that again……I passed on the MANOS reissue when Youtube posted the bonus documentary.

I’m surprised how many don’t understand that the topic is RE-release not NEW releases. I have all the Rhino releases so my interest in the Shout single disc rereleases has been pretty low in general. If I had enough money I’d buy them all just for the hell of it, but sadly I’m lucky enough to be able to afford the new four disc sets as it is. The only one I can think of that I would buy instantly is “Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders” since the Rhino transfer is so crappy it’s almost unwatchable. I’d also second a re-release of all the Shorts collections (I believe there are five not four), though I don’t think it would need to be a big four disc set. They aren’t overly long, so I’d say a two disc set would do well enough to fit them all. Or they could release them in a four disc set with the Shorts! programs on a couple of discs, and then a couple of more discs of other stuff like the Scrapbook or Last Dance tapes, or anything else big like that that they haven’t put out yet. I especially would love to see something like Poopie Parade of Values on a DVD at some point. Speaking of which I’d like to see the complete versions Poopie 1 and 2 rereleased as well, maybe as extras on some upcoming set. If I remember correctly Poopie 2 was cut down severely for the Rhino release.

And although I wouldn’t want them to go crazy with them I wouldn’t mind seeing the occasional Manos style special edition rereleases for more important episodes, like maybe one or two a year at most. I think someone above mentioned Mitchell and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians which would both be great, and I’d add Space Mutiny to that list as well. I’d really love a two disc Space Mutiny set with the original non-MST version of the film included, and some new interviews with the people who were in it, especially Reb Brown.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is the most obvious choice. I never bought it due to it being overpriced by Rhino and not needing another copy of Manos.

    Also, Amazing Colossal Man.

As for new I think it’s time for Horror of Party Beach.

Re-Releases (some of these are just seconding one others have said):

    Wild World of Batwoman
    Amazing Colossal Man
    Mitchell
Godzilla vs. Megalon ( I bought it when if first came out, but of course a lot of folks didn’t, so…)
The Killer Shrews (Never got a replacement, but only because I never tried.)
    Shorts vol. 3
    Poopie 2 (Uncut)

    New Releases:

    Hercules
    Hercules and the Captive Women
    Fugitive Alien
    Star Force: Fugitive Alien 2
    Invasion of the Neptune Men
    The Deadly Bees
    Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

Maybe put re-release the other Hercules movies too, and put all of them in one set. Same with the Fugitive Aliens, Neptune Men, and a re-release of Prince of Space.

The remainder of season 7 and the final episode:

    The Incredible Melting Man
    Deathstalker
    Escape 2000
    Diabolik

We can have all of season seven and have a series “bookend” with Diabolik. Just imagine, The Crawling Eye on one end and Diabolik on the other.

An alternate arrangement, MST3K Sword and Sorcery Collection. This mirrors the Roger Corman Sword and Sorcery Collection that was released by Shout! Factory:

    The Magic Sword
    Outlaw
    Deathstalker
    Quest of the Delta Knights

One could make a Trip to Italy set:

    Hercules and the Captive Women
    Colossus and the Headhunters
    Escape 2000
    Diabolik

    @DonR

The point of buying a DVD release of anything isn’t just to see it but to get the best quality transfer that you can watch whenever you want. I could watch Raging Bull on Netflix whenever I want but I’ll still get the blu ray, same for MST.

However, I don’t understand how some people have never seen certain episodes ( if they want to). Like he said, you can watch basically every episode these days on YouTube or Netflix, amazon, etc.

Puma Man My off-air recorded copy is in terrible condition, and it’s one of my all-time favorite episodes.

Other than that, I’d love to see Shout release Outlaw, Quest of the Delta Knights, Deathstalker III, and The Magic Sword, as part of a special “leather mug” set, which comes with a miniature lute for your Tom Serveaux figure and a perpetually looped tape of the chirpy Ren Fair music from Deathstalker III.

The amazing colossal man deserves a proper dvd release. I’d love to see themed sets like the gamera set. Space adventure, spy drama, monster, westerns, beach, biker. I really like to see more releases that have extras with them. I suggest that this be done to like Zombie Nightmare with a limited edition that has Adam West’s autograph. I’d pay $30 for that. Wouldn’t you?

I’m gonna go out on a limb here, and imagine what I think would probably be the best MST3K DVD release ever: A 2-Disc Criterion release of MST3K: The Movie. It would be fully restored (to its full length), and all new MiSTing of the “missing” parts. Plus, with Godzilla being given the Criterion treatment this year, imagine if they were able to release an “MST3K vs. Godzilla” box set.

Expensive? Sure. But worth every penny… :-)

So ends my pipe dream. We now resume regular programming.

How about a really dark, awful depressing box set? It could have a graveyard theme all in grey and black tones, and contain among others “Hamlet”. Others included could be any of the episodes with a death or macabre theme.

I’d still like to believe that some sort of agreement could be reached with Universal to allow for the first nine episodes of season 8, and a special edition of MST3K: The Movie, to see official release.

  24. I agree that the obvious choice as far as re-releases are concerned is “Amazing Colossol Man”. I have the tape, but it probably won’t last forever.

Personally, I have all the other ones (including *all three* releases of “Manos” – sheesh!), since I recently snagged Vol 10 (comparatively) cheap on ebay. So only “ACM” holds any real thrill for me. (I didn’t really *need* the new “Manos”, either, but the price dropped pretty low and I had some credit…and you know how it goes…)

Wow…. That’s worthy of a Weekend Discussion Thread in and of itself. What’s the most bleak/depressing MST3K boxed set possible?

Obviously, Hamlet would have to be front and center, with Rocket Attack U.S.A. and Red Zone Cuba both pretty close seconds. For the remaining title, there are so many to choose from. The Slime People, The Crawling Hand, Ring of Terror and Rocketship X-M are all different levels of bleak and boring, though I think Monster A-Go-Go narrowly edges out the competition by being bleak, boring, and having one of the biggest “F-you” endings of any movie ever.

I agree with those who voted for Mitchell and The Brain that Wouldn’t Die.

I also wouldn’t be against throwing re-releases into a new boxed set, maybe one or two at a time. Shout Factory has been doing such a good job that even those who own one or two of these already would benefit from a maxed-out-with-extras version of the older releases.

Just a heads up, Amazon is slashing prices like crazy..Volume XVII at $29.49, and both Volume XX (Project Moonbase, Master Ninja 1 & 2, and Magic Voyage of Sinbad) and XVIII (Lost Continent, Crash of the Moons, Beast of Yucca Flats & Jack Frost) for $29.99. Be nice if they could get some of the Rhino titles under $100 (kicking myself for not snapping them up sooner, especially Volume 9 & 10, WTF) but at least there’s some good news…

RE-release? I would firstly say Amazing Colossal Man since it never even made it on DVD in the first place *hugs his chersished VHS copy* Beyond that, Shout! should re-release EVERYTHING. This show should never have an episode unavailable or out-of-print!

As for new releases, I’m anxiously awaiting:

    AGENT FOR H.A.R.M.
    DANGER! DEATH RAY!
    DEADLY BEEDS
    DEADLY MANTIS
    DAIBOLIK
    GIRLS TOWN
    INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN

    @ #64,

Not to mention the fact that official releases — i.e. anything on Hulu or Netflix or on DVD — means that the original people who put the hard work into the show are getting a slice of the profits.

Sure, Shout Factory is taking their cut (but hey, it’s not like they’re Warner or Universal or some other billion dollar corporation) but Joel and J. Elvis and Trace and Mike and the rest are also getting some money off of this.

And that’s fair. They created the show, they wrote the episodes and the theme song and designed the look of everything we’re all still enjoying years later.

The stuff on YouTube means that the gang is *not* getting a profit off of it.

Buying the DVD’s still puts money back in our favorite stars’ pockets — as does the Hulu and Netflix stuff.

Another reason to buy DVD’s or digital downloads if they become available is that YouTube uploads are subject to copyright restrictions — they can get taken down if there is a complaint against them (*cough*Toho*cough*) — Netflix might lose the license to rent or stream them and likewise Hulu. A DVD or a digital download saved to your computer is yours forever….. or at least until technology changes again making them obsolete and meaning you have to buy them again in another format….

Obviously, a two-disc Mitchell with tbe uncut movie is at the top of the reissue wishlist. I have it on pretty good authority that Shout! is working on special editions of the Walking Tall movies. In a perfect world, hopefully they interviewed ol’ Joe Don for the first one…and in an even more perfect world, hopefully they would have snuck in a question or two about a certain other movie.

I’m pretty happy with whatever Shout releases as far as new-to-DVD episodes go. I didn’t get Comedy Central until the very end of the series’s run there (I mean, literally the last four or five weeks of reruns), so there’s still much of the series I am eager to discover properly.

If anything, I would love to see some sort of miracle happen to get some of the more ****blocked episodes released all at once. Like talk to Universal to do all of those movies together in a special tin a la the Gamera films…or all the MGM-owned films, etc.

The question looks to me like it says re-released and also released.
I’m just going to harp on the same thing I have been saying though.

The soundmix for the dvds by Shout (and also many of the Rhinos) is WRONG.

The movie needs to be louder in the mix. The riffing is fine, it is loud (and it should be). But the movies though are far quieter than they were when the show was on TV.
Shout needs to re-mix 90% of them, which I don’t see them ever doing, so it will remain as the biggest flaw of the product.

To hear the movie properly I must watch the shows on my old tapes as well as on the dvds I got from SKYRONITER. His dvds, just like my own vhs versions, have the sound mix as it was when it originally ran on tv.

I am grateful that I had the money several years ago to get all the unreleased dvds from SKYRONITER. It was one of the smartest things I ever did and it’s still paying dividends. I watch them all the time. (I recommend to SKYRONITER highly to all. He also has a wonderful selection of Extras and very rare material, as well as unmisted versions of the movies). I’m also glad that I never parted with all my vhs versions. It’s worth all the space they take up.

I have all the commercially released material from Shout & Rhino but I rarely watch them.

I’d like to see Shout release ‘The Deadly Bees’ though. Thats the only one where the tv version had the movie too loud in the mix to hear the riffing.

Rhino’s ‘Beginning of the End’ also suffers from a bad sound mix all the way around.
I am curious to whether the new Shout release corrected this. Anyone know?
If so, I definitely must get it.

Last but not least, I want to see released soon – Riding With Death (1st & foremost), Track of the Moon Beast, Operation Double 007, The Projected Man, Teenage Crimewave, Jungle Goddess, Danger Death Ray, San Francisco International, Rocketship X-M, Rocket Attack USA, Horror of Party Beach, The Incredible Melting Man, Squirm & Diabolik.

I’d love to see a Gamera-esque box set of the Sci-Fi Universal black and whites (Revenge of the Creature, Deadly Mantis, Mole People, etc.) – Sampo says Misties were getting impatient with them when they aired, but I think they’re the prime kind of movies the show was built for. All that nuclear naivete, the silly bravado, like a hundred movies all trying to be THEM! and failing. If nothing else, at least those movies clipped along, even where the riffing is weak (which it never is on the Sci-Fi’s). Perhaps in volumes…
Quest of the DK’s needs to be out on disc, as does Riding with Death, Squirm! and Samson v. the Vampire Women. There’s a box! Throw in Diabolik as a bonus!

@64: Not all of us have fast internet connections. Laugh at me if you want to (everyone else does), but I still have a dial-up which makes watching episodes online not terribly feasible. And as Stressfactor mentions, stuff on Netflix and Hulu can disappear into the ether never to be seen again when the license expires.
