Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Gypsy Moments

I can’t believe we didn’t do this one, but it’s not on the list, as alert reader Matthew notes:

After rewatching The Unearthly for the featured episode, I found myself laughing hard at the ‘Appreciating Gypsy’ host segment. It got me thinking about what other Gypsy moments were so funny and which Gypsy moments do other MSTies find funny. My contribution is her telephone song (“I wish I had a thing with a thing on it and one of my friends would chat with MEEEE!”).

My favorite moment can be summed up in three words: “Gypsy crushes Joel!”

What’s your pick?

I have to go with those above who mentioned Gypsy playing the bemused Southern Sheriff in “Manos, The Hands of Fate”. Absolutely hilarious.

    10. Her reaction to Mike and the bots when they wallpapered the Sol. “Oh. OH MY GOD! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!”

    9. When she finds out Crow copied her essay about cheating. “FRY HIM! BURN HIM UP!”

    8. Her singing ‘Are You Happy In Your Work?”

    7. As a cloned Gypsy trying to get Mike and the bots to accept clones. Singing: “Close your eyes. Go to sleep. Be absorbed by the collective. Go to sleep, Lose your soul. Be replaced by a clone. Let an evil super-consciousness swallow you whole.”

    6. Her performance in the ‘Crow, I don’t get you’ skit.

    5. Her brief time watching the movie with Joel and the bots. “Get this. They’re steam cleaning the horses.”

    4. Her performance as ‘Gypsy Rose Lee’ complete with stripping act. (Can robots be nude?)

    3. When Joel disconnects her from the higher ship functions and she talks normally. Although, the rest of the ship goes haywire without her.

    2. When she overhears the Mads plotting to kill Joel and takes action to save him.

    1. The skit where its mainly Tom narrating about all the things Gypsy does around the ship while Crow lazez about doing squat. Crow accuses Tom of being just as lazy and they argue. Gypsy comes in and they immediately decide to go be helpful. Gypsy knocks over the commercial sign button and says “Oh.”

The Nativity set in Gypsy’s mouth in Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a personal favorite. Of course I also like that the scene ends with Magic Voice saying “Noel!” There’s something I like about that.

If I contribute one more vote to “Are You Happy In Your Work?”, will it beat out Santa/Martians in a surprise upset? :)

And the OP mentioned the Phone Song without “And if you say goodbye/I’ll sock you in the eye/I’ll line you up against the wall and pop goes the weasel…” (with Crow adding the Groucho chorus)?

    @46 – (“I would take my head…and make a hat.”)

Yeah…That too. If I had to pick one line to sum up Gypsy’s character, that fits right there.

I can’t think of anything someone hasn’t already mentioned, so I’ll just second:

Joel singing to her in Wild Rebels and then getting beaten up “I’m in it for the kicks!”

“Are You Happy In Your Work”

    and

“Crow, I don’t get you” (I just told a girl at work last week that I ‘was the wind, baby’!)

I agree with those who loved the manger in her mouth. (Santa Claus Conquers the Martians) After all, isn’t that what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown?

And of course her wish to be Mrs. Richard Basehart. (The man _was_ seriously hot.)

    From Master Ninja II;

Joel: “…Could you just give us a suggestion for a place where Tom and Crow can meet?”

    Gypsy: “CREAM OF WHEAT!”

Joel: “Cream of wheat. OK. I can see that. Now I need a suggestion for some THING that Tom and Crow can do together that’s appropriate to do in front of the Pope or your mother”

    Gypsy: “PETER GABRIEL”

Joel: “OK. You’re at cream of wheat and you’re about to do Peter Gabriel. Now one last thing. I need the name of a celebrity.”

    Gypsy: “ANGER”

Just look at all these great Gypsy moments everyone’s coming up with. See, we love you Gypsy! :inlove:

A few more. Gypsy’s respond to Tom and Crow in the “Gypsy Moon” song and I’ve always loved when Joel wooed Gypsy. She so deserved it.

“Although I’d just assume take NyQuil with a spoon, then listen to you two drone on about the gypsy moon..”

    Favorite Gypsy moments:

“Hey guys, how’s the movie?” from Tubular Boobular Joy, Outlaw.
“My big scene, ruined! I’ve never seen such unprofessionalism.” from the Manos driving sketch, Manos: Hands Of Fate.
“They’re steam-cleaning the horses.” in the theater during Hercules And The Captive Women.
“Guys, it’s not cheese!” from the escape sketch, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.
Gypsy being way, way more than the half a beat late of her film counterpart in the recording studio sketch, “Idiot Control Now” from Pod People.

“I’m in it for the kicks” is prob my favorite moment af all MST.

Although I prefer the more bovine ‘early’ Gypsy, the moment that springs to mind is “It’s not brocolli I love, it’s…you.” and her light blinks as they sweep the brocolli of the table and give in to the passion. I don’t get the “Are you happy in your work” song, though I enjoy it; but the manger scene reveal is timeless.

@44 Stephen: I believe that was the intro to Master Ninja I. Joel is indignant that Gypsy has learned the racy lyrics. “Noone will be strapping anyones hand across anyone’s engines.”

The Sword and the Dragon. Gypsy really hits the nail on the head with her long-in-coming observation regarding her shipmates. “You guys are so WEIRD.” Mike’s insistence that he’s a bunny does not help.

Gypsy is hands down my favorite ‘bot. I love her, so any scene she’s in is good. One of my favorites is the Kabuki host segment in “Invasion of the Neptune Men” where Mike is trying to say he likes Noh theater but of course Crow and Tom misunderstand him and a “who’s on first” exchange follows. Gypsy stands quietly in her lovely kimono until the end, when she says, “I get it, Mike.”

    @digital_trucker

It’s season 2’s “Wild Rebels”. The same episode Joel serenades Gypsy in.

I actually wish Joel had played guitar more often on the show. Early on you could tell he was really playing the instrument but the few later episodes he has a guitar in look like he just fakes it.

The guys were pretty quick to take advantage of Kevin Murphy’s singing voice and Mike’s talent for composing and playing keyboard but I wonder what other ‘hidden’ talents members of the crew had which got passed over.

    @ #80,

I dunno, I kind of liked the ‘drunk’ Magic Voice at the Root Beer kegger to celebrate the final Gamera movie.

Although how a non-corporeal AI gets ‘drunk’ on root beer is anyone’s guess.

Gypsy responding to Tom’s kickboxing challenge in Future War is priceless. From her entrance with an inappropriate song (“You… shook me alll night”… I love that kind of gag, along with the “last sentence of a weird conversation” one) to her extreme helpfulness… leading up to that weirdass moment where WHEN DID GYPSY GET A FOOT?

I love in Fugitive Alien (just watched it recently) when Joel says that one of the fun things to do on a farm is cow-tipping…and then knocks poor Gypsy over…and she falls with a despairing “Mooooo!”

Another great moment is in the episode with the marriage sketch and she devours Tom.

Man, now, I’m thinking of all sorts of great moments. When they’re fleeing from Pearl and Gypsy starts driving and gets them hidden behind an asteroid. “I need a diet Fresca.”

“Mike! This sucks! Can we just eat?”

…plus, all the other great moments that everyone else has mentioned.

Gypsy out driving Pearl in “Driving with Death.” Especially when Crow yells “Get ’em Gyps!”

Gypsy playing the lyre for everyone in “Hercules Unchained” which amounted to her yelling “last night” and hitting the lyre with her head!

    One more!

I can’t remember which episode. But it’s when Gypsy repeats “and strap your hands across my engines,” and Joel like a good “father” (which he is to the bots) turns to Tom and Crow and demands, “All right! Who taught her that!”

To which, Crow and Tom do their best to try and look innocent. Funny!

Although I’ve loved the show for years and find a lot to laugh at in each episode, I never really liked Gypsy. I think it’s the voice, which is hard to understand, and her personality. Gypsy always seemed angry or intolerant and I guess I never understood her purpose, as a character. Just my two cents worth.

  43. Fred Burroughs says:

Gypsy is not one of the “A” characters, as far as screen time and plot goes. However, they did a great job of balancing her cluelessness and innocence with sweetness and femininity, so when she shows her ‘mother hen’ instinct or loses her temper, it’s hilarious. As in the Andy-Rooney-Off contest: “Now the results .. Time…AH, THE HELL WITH EVERY LAST ONE OF YA!” …Showing just how annoying Andy Rooney can be. She fulfills the maternal caretaker role as well as the object of female mystery to the bots, as in when Servo tried to date her, also the “I don’t get you” exchange. And of course, she’s the first thing Joel must fix when returning in the ‘Soultaker’ episode.
