Weekend Discussion Thread: Guilty Pleasures

Our alert pal Mr. B(ob) suggests:

Guilty pleasure joke or episode, i.e., the joke or episode you felt was the weakest that still made you laugh.

You can also include movie moments, because my pick, no question is: “Today is dedicated to Uranus!”

What’s your pick?

My guilty pleasure is the opening song from “Blood Waters of Doctor Z” – I dunno why, but it’s a major earworm and I find it playing in my head the rest of the day after watching the movie.

The series of (gulp) ethnic jokes during the first 20 or so minutes of Santa Claus get me every time. There’s not too mean-spirited, but part of the joke is that the stereotypes the movie shows are really lazy and and their jokes are lazier. Then Crow makes a crack at US kids and “That makes it all better.” Sure.

And 70s music jokes. It’s before my time, but thanks to my parents I know all of the songs. I thought Laserbast was hilarious.

    Hmmmm. Interesting question…

The Uranus jokes were weak but funny (Uranus is big and gassy, isn’t it???)

As a general comment, I guess the lowbrow and entendre humor does it for me (The tubular boobular joy song is a perfect example. For that matter, Outlaw of Gor was one guilty pleasure after another.)

Angel’s Revenge had a lot of that (I am a kid of the 70’s, so I remember a lot of those types of movies and shows.)

I’ll go with Being from Another Planet as a guilty pleasure, too…

  4. The horribly lame dated commercial references get me every time: “SURE,we all do!” or “We secretly switched their coffee with Folgers Crystals.” or “Diarrhea is like a storm raging inside your body.” They make me laugh only because I remember those commercials all too well.

Hmmm, a tricky question. By my standards, anything that makes me laugh is funny, therefore good. So to come up with something that’s considered a guilty pleasure is difficult. But I suppose that the “Italian ethnic stereotype” sketch from ‘Devil Fish’ could be considered as such. It’s just a full-on bad taste premise, but I just can’t help giggling when they reach “Warning! Ethnic Slur!” level. “O Sole Mio!” “What for you break you Momma’s heart!?”
Now in terms of episode, then I suppose ‘Creeping Terror’ counts. It’s such a monotonous bore of a movie, but I always enjoy it.

Well, technically, isn’t every episode of a show that pokes fun at terrible movies a guilty pleasure?

The deliberate mispronunciation of the name of Ator’s sidekick, Thong, in Cave Dwellers gets pretty juvenile, but it never fails to make me laugh. If I recall, he’s referred to as “Dong” several times and it makes me laugh every time. One of the things I love about MST3K is the way they mixed sophisticated humor with silly and more obvious jokes as well as actual commentary on film making. The eclectic mix is a main reason it so funny for the fully 90-plus minutes and on repeated viewings.

Since we just discussed Lost Continent, I immediately thought of my favorite riff, when the scientist is sitting behind Romero, gets up to the sound of some animal trumpeting, and Crow says, “Oh, very impressive.” Joel says, “Sorry.” That’s a bit of “guy humor” that I would usually ignore but in this case does make me laugh FAR more than I should.

I forget the episode, but there’s a host segment which is a parody of the “Shore Leave” episode of Star Trek where someone from Mike’s past pops onto the bridge and punches him. A moment later, Bridget as Adrienne Barbeau pops in. It’s very obvious that she’s going to punch him, but it still cracks me up every time.

In Hobgoblins where Mike makes fun of the old security guard. I know it’s easy to make fun of old people and fat people, but talking in an old person voice always makes me laugh. When old people try to do normal things, it’s just funny to watch.

Two little jokes that shouldn’t be THAT funny but always floored me are in Teenagers from Outer Space when they look at the bones of Sparky and Crow says ‘Arf!’ For some reason that just kills me! In Eegah! there is a scene where Roxy is talking to her Dad and a moth flies into her and Crow says ‘Bonk!’ Don’t know why those two are so funny to me.

In Untamed Youth, there’s this part where the son, Bob, is being shown around the farm after coming back home. After meeting the foreman, they keep walking but Bob kinda turns back to look at where the tractor or something is going, and Servo says, “Chump!” kind of under his breath, like Bob is being insulted and he heard it. It’s great timing, but there’s no real reason for it.

That’s one of many that make me laugh.

I thought The Painted Hills was kind of “meh” until that guy walked in and they introduced him as “Pile-On Pete.” I could not stop laughing at that dumb joke! It saved the episode for me. Then there was that great moment in the end credits where Joel said, “Oh! Pilot Pete! Boy, is my face red.”

The two jokes I KNOW I shouldn’t find funny are “Outlaw”- “Ok I’ll just follow your butt.” Music goes *THRUM* “Whoa not anymore I won’t.” & “Alien from L.A.” where Servo does the Islam call to prayer and it morphs into yodeling.

I REALLY shouldn’t laugh at these jokes especially at the Islam one cause it’s probably offensive, but I can’t stop chuckling every time I watch these episodes.

One riff that makes me feel guilty for liking it:

In The Amazing Colossal Man during the flashback a plane goes down. Joel goes “Hello Bayyybyyyy” as its going down in the voice of the Big Bopper.

Its so mean, and yet I love it.

All the rips on Joe Don Baker in “Final Justice.” They seemed to be attacking him personally in that movie (as opposed to mocking the character), but I still laughed.

The “Rocky!” “Again?!” jokes from the Fugitive Alien movies. I tried counting the number of times they do it, and just couldn’t jeep up. Yet I laugh every. damn. time.

“Canada Song” from The Final Sacrifice. “Why you lousy, stinking, Franco-phonic, bacon-loving bastards, you’re country’s just a giant piece of-!” It’s so wrong, but so funny.

Crow’s censor-bleep-laden deposition from Agent from H.A.R.M.. I think I find bleeped swearing funnier than actual swearing, for some reason…

I dig the dance hall music during “The Creeping Terror” and I know I shouldn’t. Not because of the dancing (embarrassing), not because of the riffs (funny)–just the awful music because it’s sort of catchy…too catchy.

  42. monoceros4 says:

I sometimes like riffs which, for lack of a better way of describing them, are very “simple”–riffs where there isn’t really even any joke, but something dumb is said in a such a guileless way that I can’t help but crack up. An example comes to mind in Bride of the Monster where Joel, as Bela, answers the question, “Who are you and where am I?” with, “This is here and I am me.” Or earlier in the episode where, again as Bela, Joel says, “Oh, I have an octopus! Hm?” A Mike-era example is when in the middle of Chicken of Tomorrow Tom Servo just says, “Some eggs don’t even exist.” Why is that funny? There’s no earthly reason, but it just is.

I also like, more than some MST3K watchers anyway, when the ‘bots break down. Castle of Fu Manchu is probably one of the least favorite episodes just for this reason but I like how completely the ‘bots become weepy and unstrung by the end.

A different sort of guilty pleasure is when the crew make “gay” jokes. I giggle, even though the stereotyping can be a bit facile and uncomfortable at times. Some of the gay riffs are clever, with references to Tom of Finland or whatnot, but there’s plenty of the automatic assumption that exaggerated lisp = funny. But it amused me enough in Cave Dwellers when they *really* piled that stuff on.

There is a riff Crow used in a couple of different episodes…the one I recall is in “Catalina Caper” after Little Richard performs a song on the bow of the ship, when the song ends, Crow says, “You were great. Now leave! Out the back door.” Oh yeah, I think Crow says the line in “Girls Town” right after “The Platters” perform a song in the nightclub. Clearly a crack about the obvious racism of the times…but it still cracks me up. No doubt it falls under the “It’s so funny cause it’s true” category!

I’d say the entire *Manos* ep would be a guilty pleasure. It’s a terrible movie, the ending is just plain wrong, and supposedly the guy who played Torgo committed suicide not long after the movie was released – the awful reviews it got were said to be at least part of the reason. Yet I still watch the MST3K episode and – what’s that? There’s going to be a *Manos* sequel? :))
