One other note: The last “rerun” of MST3K was on television in Janurary, 2004.
Either Martha has been incubating this idea for more than four years…or she LIED.
And according to your broadcast schedule archive, MST3k hasn’t been rerun late at night (I’ll be generous and say 9 PM or later) since August 1999.
(oops, make that September:oops: )
*blink*
Huh?…
the movies on quite a bit lately though.
oh, crap, did i just defend martha stewart? dang.
WTF is up with that picture of her and Howard Stern? That is a combo I *never* thought I’d see in this lifetime…
And as for Martha “watching reruns … during a sleepless night,” it was probably just some bored MSTie intern trying to spice up an otherwise dull meeting by pitching ridiculous show ideas for fun. Lo and behold, it’s considered a fantastic idea and gets made. D’oh!
If I’m not off my mark, that’s most likely a publicity shot from Sirius Satellite Radio. Sirius, at least for the moment, is home to both Stern and Stewart.
It’s either that, or she’s been hired to be Artie Lang’s replacement while he’s in rehab.
Whatever is right. How gives a rat’s ass about her. She has all her staff to think up and create all those decorating ideas. She is a phoney and deserve nothing but contempt from anyone espeacially MST3K fans. Sorry for being so harsh but I just don’t like her.
here’s the article from the NYT ( you may need to register ) I sent it to Sampo and Earhardt early this morning but I guess it didn’t tickle their fancy :(
( Klein, go wait in the hoary netherworld… )

i extract…
Martha Stewart is not widely known for her sense of humor. But she is in on this particular joke. In fact, she created it, dreaming up the premise after watching reruns of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” during a sleepless night. That series, produced from 1988 to 1999, delivered sarcastic commentary about old horror movies, and had blossomed into a cable cult hit.
Maybe she had a DVD? Old episodes of a show don’t have to be on cable to be called reruns. Funny thing is, with the rise of TV on DVD I’m not hearing the word “rerun” as often as I used to from people. Now everything just has “old episodes” instead.
Um, uh, well…okay…I..
Come on you guys! Martha’s integrity is unimpeachable!
Or something…
This is a bit much to take. I really have not much to say but ouch. oh and watch out for snakes.
MattG @ #10…
Um, yes, by it’s very nature a “rerun” must be shown on TV. That is what makes it a rerun. It’s a show that was previously shown, and is being run again. It’s not a rerun if someone is watching it on DVD because it is not being “run” on a television station. But I think you are right, and she could easily have been watching it on video. She could have just said something vague like “I was watching an old episode of MST3K” and the person who wrote the article just ignorantly reffered to it as a “rerun”, not realizing that she wasn’t actually watching it on a TV station.
Anyway I find it funny that they say she “dreamed it up” while watching MST3000. So all you have to do to come up with a new original TV show is be watching an old one, and just take the exact concept of that show and do it yourself? That would be like me watching an episode of The X-Files and suddenly coming up with the genius original idea of a TV series about a man and woman who investigate paranormal activities.
I miss Julia Child.
Just sayin…. :(
So, what exactly is the format of this innovative new show, anyway? Are the two daughters going to riff on The Martha’s old shows? Or follow her around the studio, mocking everything she does? I might actually watch that…
Poopie…guess that NYT link did work after all. Well, now I know everything, I guess.
Ok, I know I’m a total jerk for posting three times in a row, but I just couldn’t believe this part from the article!
“They promised not to be mean, and I had to trust them,” Ms. Stewart said in an interview. “I’m not going to have a heart attack.”
The same may not be true for her publicist, Sheila Feren, who is responsible for protecting Ms. Stewart’s public image. During the preparation of this article, Ms. Feren repeatedly said, “Oh, my God. Please tell me this is not happening.”
Not mean? Then what’s the friggin’ point?
Yeah! And what about scarecrow’s brain! Screw it, make your show Martha! Whatever the heck it’s about, it will never even touch the magic and wonderfulness of the MST3K we all know and love. I can’t wait to hear Martha try to riff, wait, scratch that.
help me somebody… didn’t Shatner ‘star’ in some kind of MST knock-off ? And wasn’t there another one with a guy dressed up as an usher or a doorman ? Where they one and the same ?
Note : Good Eats does an homage to MST every now and then, but only to the name and the fact that there may be puppets. No riffing, no shadowrama.
Jeez, who cares? Riffing is for everyone. So what if Martha Stewart is going to have a show makes fun of her own show?
who cares? Through my work (can’t say, it’s confidential) I’ve had to deal with Martha more than the average person should have to and have been making fun of her for years. It’s not that difficult to do!
But there WAS no Martha.
Am I imagining it, or is the amount of publicity that MST3K is getting keeps going up, long after the show is off the air? I’d think that at some point a threshold would be reached where it would become profitable to start airing whatever reruns can be made rights-available.
Joel should have called it “Whatever, MOVIE!”
You’re not imagining it. I saw this on CNN or MSNBC early this morning before checking this site. It didn’t phase me one bit that the show was brought up. If it had been a few years ago or even just one year ago it would have been pretty surprising. But for some reason, right now it seems to be in line with the natural order of MSTie news. In that way. I guess it is sort of odd.
I’m just throwing this out there, but in her defense I once saw some pictures of Martha Stewart from a long long time ago (probably the late 60’s or early 70’s) and she was REALLY hot.
She just needs a new ‘do.
I’d be more upset with Stewart over this if it wasn’t for MST3K being ‘America’s’ first television show that makes fun of really bad movies.
At least she took this idea before Emeril.
Cornjob, what the bleep does it matter if she was hot 40 to 50 years ago? She’s a poser who slaps HER name on everything, yet has a team of about 100 people behind her doing all the work.
I’m new here, just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.
I’m surprised no one has commented on the far more upsetting implication that Martha is a fan of MST3K.
I might need to rethink my devotion to the show.
Well, that explains the “ex-genius” part. Seriously, how old are you.. six? Just because someone you don’t like happens to be interested in something you like, you have to question your devotion to it? It sounds to me like there is no question here.. you’re not that devoted.
Y’know, I’m gonna come out and say I actually admire Martha in the same way I admire Madonna–regardless of what you think of their products, they have proved themselves savvy businesswomen, reinventing themselves for extraordinarily long careers in the public eye.
Hell, I wish I could have a job where I get to take the credit for the work that a “team of 100” does in my name!
Well Auntie ( #35 ), all kidding aside, there are such things as self-respect and dignity, which I am sure all of us here have in abundance ( yourself inlcuded ), too much in fact to relish taking credit for the hard work of others or to make a living as a prancing virtual prostitute that for the sake of good press adopts children and debases other peoples’ religious traditons.
( jeez, who the f*** do I think I am ? )
JTYAJ #34. I understand what you’re saying, what others think should have no impact on our own personal viewpoint, but I too may at least have to re-think.
If you found out that say a book or a piece of music that played a formatative part in your life turned out to be required reading among the cannibal / serial killer / child molester set, I think it is only natural to feel at least a little unease.
of course Martha Stewart is not in the same league as John Wayne Gacy or Jeff Dahmer.
She’s much worse.
Well, then by that token I urge all of you to reconsider your interest in art since Hitler himself was an artist. Also, Britney Spears was photographed with a Radiohead CD… all Radiohead fans ought to reconsider their fandom because of this.
( actually, as a carnivore, I get a lot of mileage out of explaining to vegetarians that Hitler was a vegetarian too ;)
As Johnny said, I don’t care, I don’t care ” I don’t care !!!!!
#34 JTYAJ – I’m pretty sure #33 M -ex genius-K was only joking.
#32 Smesybeed — Hi!
I’m not a medium, I’m a petite (#21), you’re thinking of William Shatner’s Full Moon Fright Night, which looks like it only existed as a direct-to-video pilot. It was more of a Horror Host thing, and featured the film “Vampire Journals.” Here it is on Amazon:

“And wasn’t there another one with a guy dressed up as an usher or a doorman ?”
Not a guy, but the redoubtable Laraine Newman in CANNED FILM FESTIVAL. It actually preceded MST3K:
