Weekend Discussion Thread: The Prop Auction–What Did You Get? What Did You Want?

Alert reader Christopher asks:

How about, “What did YOU get from the MST3K Prop Auction?” or “What did you WANT to get from the MST3K Prop Auction?” Maybe throw in “why” for extra credit.

That about says it. I didn’t bid in the auction, but if I had to pick, I think I’d love to have the “Cholester-do-all.”

You?

I don’t have any props but if I could use the wayback machine I would get the cardboard cutout of Abby from Riding with Death. Go get them Sam! Give it the old college try!
On the other hand, now that I’m a dad I can see a lot of potential uses for the Wish Squisher!

While I never could of afforded any of the stuff from the BBI auction, I’ve had opportunities to speak with people over the years who have.

What I really want now is an archive of pictures of all the items that were for sale.

I bid on and won the complete, cast-autographed, BluRay-DVD Mst3k series collection, packaged in a custom-constructed, SOL-shaped, leatherbound case that resists heat up to 700 degrees.

A man can dream, cant he?

Couldn’t afford anything. I did bid on a couple of items, but was shocked at how high the bids went. The only item I remember and was the most aggressive about was the Mike puppet.

I won a “tossable foam brain”, though I had to supply the bowl to keep it in.

Hmmm…if I could’ve gotten something else, that depends. Was the Worst Movie in the World videocassette/monolith up for bid?

I looked at the auction items and knew that I would never be able to afford any of them. I would have LOVED to have gotten my hands on the Tragic Moments figurines. My wife collects Precious Moments and I would have liked to see “By the Fire’s Glow” (http://www.tundraman.com/Other/BestBrains/Index.cfm — bottom picture)sitting next to “A Reflection of His Love.” (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brbjmb/page5/ — Fourth Row).

I bid on and won the giant hypo from Amazing Colossal Man. The needle smelled like Frank’s butt.

I was saving money up at the time and wasn’t able to bid on anything, but I did know a girl who bought the toolbox Joel carries in to fix the SOL in the Soultaker episode, no tools were included, just the empty box.

I don’t even know if these were up for sale, but the M+TB cutouts from Hobgoblins would look great in my living room.

  12. The Toblerone Effect says:

At the time of the auction, I was in my early twenties, living at home rent-free and working two jobs, so I had plenty of money to bid on an item. I went after Joel’s “smoking jacket” from Season 2; I always thought it was a sharp-looking item, and I’ve always thought clothing props had more appeal over set props. I went as high as $500 on it before realizing that making costly bids on such things seemed alittle crazy, even if it was from a show I really love. (I think the winning bid ended up at roughly $1,200). I don’t regret not making a stronger go of it, because I needed a new car soon after that auction ended.

@ Tor Johnson- How do you know what Frank’s butt smells like?

I would have liked the Mike-era Cambot and the Nanites, as those were the only robot puppets that were being put in the auction as I recall.

I wonder if anyone got the KTMA jumpsuit.

I was happy to get door #6 from the Mike years. It hangs proudly in my media room along with a Scifi era cast poster autographed by everyone. I took a 8X11 photo of the wall to a Cinematic Titanic show and had the group autograph the picture and that now hangs on the wall along with the rest. OK, so I,m a geek.

Well I couldn’t afford anything even if I had known about it, but I would have really liked to have the artist renderings of the ‘bots custom vans from “Master Ninja”. Crow’s was especially cool, with the reliable reading lamp and the cooler of water, coke and diet coke.

I would have loved to get the MST globe, but I know it was huge and would have taken up the whole room. But it would have been worth it.

I managed to get away with the foam dynamite from Frank trying to blow up Deep 13 in The Sinister Urge. Not at all sure how I managed to afford it back then, but I somehow wound up with it.

I didn’t actually see all the items and I couldn’t afford to bid, but if I had so pick some stuff… The Satellite of Love model, the Dactari Stool, Dr. F’s labcoat, The BGC19, Mikes jumpsuit, Tom, Crow, the Torgo outfit and DEEEEEP HURTING!!!! (I know these weren’t all there but I just can’t help myself.)

Just curious, since I missed it……..when was the auction actually held?

And does anybody know (approximately) how much was made from the ‘sale’?

Ah, the good old days when I had some disposable income. I went a little crazy and picked up a lot of stuff. At first I was only planning on getting a few things that I really liked. Then I decided to try to get something from each season and from some favorite episodes. Any way, here’s a link to what I ended up with (most, but not every item was picked up during the auction).

  22. Zee says:

I bid up to $2000 on the Mike Puppet from Prince of Space… I already had Tom and Crow puppets (replicas, not show-used) and figured this would be my only way to actually have the COMPLETE S.O.L. Crew…. Thank god I was out-bid, and that splurging madness was even more temporary than my then-financial stability! I don’t even have $2000 in my bank account today.

In the end I only got two very reasonably prices things: Joel’s giant Bass from Secret Agent Super Dragon, and Frank’s giant popcorn bucket from the live show (When Frank dumped popcorn on the audience). It was also seen briefly in Servo’s bedroom in MST3K: The Movie. The bass (made from spray-painted styrofoam) soon disintegrated but Frank’s popcorn bucket is still in use as our bedroom garbage can!

OH- And when I won the popcorn bucket they accidentally mailed me a piece of the SOL set! Unfortunately I had to give it back (should’ve played dumb when Barbbbb called me!) but for a few days I had an actual piece of the SOL set in my house!!!

I had no idea there was an auction, and couldn’t have bid anyway! But if I had the scratch, I’d have bought the Tank Tops from Catalina Caper. But don’t look at me! Never look at me!

I managed to get Tom Servo’s bagpipes from High School Big Shot, a squished Servo head from Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders, an Observer robe, and Brain Guy’s brain caddy from the series finale.

Would love to have gotten the Ernest Borgnine childrens’ books from Merlin’s Shop, but got outbid.

Weird, just the other day I found myself wandering around wondering what became of the cardboard cutout of Abby from Riding With Death, and whether it was sold in the auction. Then today this topic. Incidentally, wondering about a small prop about a minor character from a single episode of a tv show that has been off the air for ten years is definitely a sign of being a MSTIE

I bid on and won three Servo costumes – the ballgown and wig he whipped up for Pearl’s party in “Puma Man”, and the male and female madrigal robes (plus falsies for the sweet Delta Lady)from “Quest of the Delta Knights”. They all look fetching on my home made but quite authentic Servo. I worked as a dresser for Houston Grand Opera a few years ago. One time I took Tom in his ballgown to meet one of the sopranos (singer, not mobster), who’s a huge MSTie. She practically wet ’em she was laughing so hard!

I wanted the Plush Dr F, but it went too high. Instead i got the Nelson Cigarette display. It was bigger than it looked on screen, so it’s in storage, but i keep a pack of Nelson cigarettes on my desk. I’m not man enough to smoke them…

I won the trenchcover (newer) used during the Mike years. It was what Mike stood on behind the desk. It went for about 60 bucks, which was all I could afford at the time. It has an arrow to remind Mike which way to stand. There’s some pictures of it at my site http://www.astroreverb.com/trenchcover/propshrine.html

I didn’t even know at the time, but would have liked to get one of the Nanites, and the Ultimate would be the Geodesic Dome on the Gizmonic Institute grounds, from the intro sequence in seasons 1 thru 4.
(I’m a big fan of the writings and inventions of Buckminster Fuller & it was one of the things that made the show instantly endearing.)

I don’t know if it went up for auction but I would have loved to have had the huge Servo from High School Big Shot. Would love to know what happened to it. I wonder if Toolmaster Jeff Maynard took it with him when he left. “SERVO KILL?”

I wanted something from the MST3K Hour syndicated show: The big hanging pictures of Frank and Forrester. The thing is, I never saw them in the auction (but I didn’t pay that much attention, to be honest). Years later I asked Barbbb about them and she said she had no idea what happened to them, but it appeared they were never sold.

If anyone knows, please let me know. I’m at least curious about them. Gorn Captain, maybe you know?

  45. Gorn Captain says:

I don’t recall seeing those up for auction. (I will double check soon as I find my CD of the pics.) Maybe they were just too big and fragile to ship? I do recall seeing them in behind the scenes footage at Best Brains during the SciFi era, hanging on a wall.

I won the small foam Earth that Pearl squishes in the show opening from Season 10. (Not the balloon she popped in previous years on Sci-Fi!) I think it was put up toward the end of the auction when things were winding down and I got it at a reasonable price (I think around 200 bucks.) Mary Jo actually squished my item!

oh gosh, I have to think fast! uhhh…. I love the Bittersweethearts invention, though in retrospect those are just Sweethearts in a made-up package. Still think Bittersweethearts would be a great idea in real life.

someone bidded on Dr. F’s lab coat or did I misread that one post? either way, I would KILL for his coat!

  48. Cubby says:

The bidding was always an order of magnitude beyond my budget, but they never put the item I really would have wanted up for bid: The Fridge Alert, because I would have wanted to know it was William Conrad who was raiding my fridge. (The Quinn Martin Nature Preserve would have been a close second.)

Someone asked when the prop auction was. I think it started in late 1999 and went into 2000; basically until there wasn’t anything left. Since they had to vacate the studio/warehouse, everything had to go. I’m sure Jim Mallon and others got their favorite item(s). The only thing I would have liked was the Mstie ball. But, like a lot of others, I couldn’t afford anything either.

  50. Monty says:

I have 3 props from that auction. A piece of the S.O.L. set (which is only really seen well in one or two episodes since it is off to the side), and 2 props from “Overdrawn At The Memory Bank” – Tom Servo’s Head (with exposed brain) and the Doppeling cube.

That’s right, I have Tom Servo’s brain. Which I got for a fairly reasonable price, since it was late in the auction. I am certain that if it had gone up earlier it would have fetched a ton since some of the earlier pieces up for auction went for much more than they probably should have, and this was an actual piece of one of the Bots. I think I paid $300 or so for it. Can’t remember how much for certain. I had to have it since I already had the cube from the same host segment.

Tons of stuff from that auction I wish I could have grabbed, but I am happy with what I got.
