Shout! Factory Whoopsie

Apparently some early promotional material released by Shout! Factory for the Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition DVD box set has “Laserblast” and “Werewolf” listed as two of the episodes that will be included. But this may not be the case. Here is Shout!’s official response to our inquiry:

Unfortunately, Laserblast and Werewolf were accidentally included in temp copy for Shout! Factory’s 2008 catalog, which was sent out to the printer prior to any titles being licensed.  In addition, our team was licensing enough titles for not only the 20th Anniversary Edition, but our second release coming early next year at the same time.  The four films that will be included in our 20th Anniversary Edition will be officially announced during our special reunion panel at San Diego’s Comic-Con International later this month.

I guess we’ll just have to wait a couple more weeks to know exactly what the titles are. Stay tuned!

The shout factory memo doesn’t make sense to me…”early next year at the same time?” But on Amazon the Anniversary edition release date is set for the end of Oct. which is hardly early next year.
Also, the “in addition” comment sounds a little like an admition to me that Laserblast or Werewolf, if not included in the Anniversary set, will be in the second set. Hmmm….

They meant “…licensing, at the same time, the titles for the second set, which will be coming early next year…”

    grammatical error.

Dont read too much into “in addition,” which just means “and here is another point” in this context. They wouldn’t put this rebuttal out only to purposely drop hints within it.

That’s not to say that they won’t be included. I hope they will be.

Even if these two movies aren’t included due to licensing issues, you can see from these pre-selected titles that “Shout” is actually going after episodes we want, which is fantastic.

” but our second release coming early next year”
So, I’m guessing that Shout! will be releasing the sets at about the same pace Rhino was…..2 per year?

My guess is Laserblast will be on the 20th Anniversary Edition this October and Werewolf early next year, which hopefully is January and February.
It seems like Laserblast is a given for the 20th anniversary set since it should all be key episodes..which is why I’m thinking Crawling Eye, Rocketship XM, Laserblast, & maybe Soultaker (if they really need one from the scifi channel) as those are all key episodes and would be logical choices. This is also based on that they will follow the 2 Joel- 2 Mike & a scifi show formula ala Rhino…
Other ones could be Sampson vs the Vampire Women, an early KTMA – the first show ever..
Werewolf is a really good one from the scifi era so I would be happy if it came out, again I think thats for early next year..
    we shall see :)

    1. The first disc set is set for October 2008. No titles officially revealed until Comic Con at the end of this month. Several people guess Laserblast will be included as it’s been titled the 20th Anniversary Edition, and that episode is significant because it’s the last Comedy Central show/last appearance of Dr. Forrester. 2. Werewolf could be a possible title for there 2nd DVD set in Early 08. The Shout Factory blogs have suggested that they will release sets more often than Rhino. They have hinted early 08. The blogs said that they are already working on getting licenses for the next set. I hope this is a little clearer. Somehow I doubt it.
For more info go to shoutfactory.com, click on community and click on the top forum (The Film Crew for MST Fanatics) look at these threads: (MST3K DVDs, What episodes do you want on the first mst set, MST Season seven, Mystery Science theater from shout factory) and mainly read only those replies by B Ward and make up your own conclusions.

happy: for the Sci-Fi ep…either Soultaker or Diabolik…the latter being the final series episode.

As for KTMA…impossible. They didn’t originally get the rights to the movies…and with the fact that they barely ever release season 1 eps, I doubt releasing any KTMA eps would be planned…

I’m guessing KTMA episodes will never be released on the sets, but perhaps they will be available as downloads only. After all, Shout does have the rights to release episodes through digital distribution.

I asked about the frequency of DVD releases on the Shout Factory forum and B Ward assured in his response that they would be more frequent than the once or twice per year we got from Rhino. I REALLY HOPE this turns out to be TRUE.

This is like a sports general manager that says “we’re absolutely not looking to acquire that player. No negotiations are taking place.” a day before they hold a press conference to introduce said player.

It sure would be nice if companies would grow up and be honest once in awhile. Since, y’know, its hard for me personally to give $70 to liars.

Speedy #13 – You wouldn’t be a SHOUT rep by any chance, would you?

Luke #18 – Easy, man. They just said that the titles were accidentally included, correct or not. It could’ve just been some office worker who included those in the rough catalogue because they are his/her favorite episodes.

  23. Speedy says:

Not a rep, just an impatient fan who looks up stuff and tries to make an educated guess. I also notice reference to KTMA eps here and the only thing for that I have to say is, if only some miracle happened where they get the rights to the any of the 9 eps from both KTMA season and season 3, they could put both eps on a disc. Example – if they got the rights for Time Of The Apes, they could do one disc: Side A: K17, Side B: 306. This is only wishful thinking.

    “Wait.

Cubby- I think they mean they won’t be re-releasing eps that were already released by Rhino.

I think the new boxed set is going to be Summer Blockbuster Review 1 & 2, The Making of MST Special and a documentary about who’s a better host- Mike or Joel- to be produced by Ken Burns.

  25. If they printed that in their catalogue it sounds like they were pretty confident of securing the rights to the two of them, and would likely have been trying. Fingers crossed the two appear on one of the sets!

Anyone who is willing to trust there time and money to the united states post office when they can easilly purchase the item at a local store is either an imbissil or has never had a lost or stolen package.

  27. Bob says:

This may come as a surprise, but I’ll bet everyone at some point in their life has suffered an occasional lost or stolen package or other item of mail. People also have their credit card numbers stolen in walk-in brick-and-mortar stores too. The former doesn’t stop most of us from using mail order anyway unless it’s a persistent problem any more than the occasional problem with a dishonest store clerk stops most people from using credit cards in retail shops.

I’ve ordered every MST3K 4-disc set from Amazon or Deep Discount without a problem and without anything being lost or stolen and I’ve never paid full list price. One time I ordered an MST3K 4-disc set as a gift for someone via mail order and the package did not arrive. Guess what, the reputable online retailer replaced the missing package at no additional cost.

I’m afraid the statement that, “Anyone who is willing to trust there time and money to the united states post office when they can easilly purchase the item at a local store is either an imbissil or has never had a lost or stolen package.” is over-simplifying. Also, the word IMBECILE is NOT spelled i-m-b-i-s-s-i-l, so perhaps someone might want to stay away from calling people imbeciles if they are not capable of spelling the word. Also, the word in your sentence should be “their”, not “there”.

What would REALLY be a miracle is if Shout! Factory could get any episode with the name “Sandy Frank” somewhere in them onto DVD.

If they can do that, they they truly are gods amongst men.

From what was written in the “Amazing Colossal Episode Guide”, the gang would never want anyone to see the KTMA episodes because they didn’t think they were good enough, and would probably have some reservations about Season 1 at Comedy Central/Comedy Channel, as well. Some of those KTMA episodes are rough, so I agree with them, or at least I see their point. I did like “SST Death Flight” and would love to see the Cinematic Titanic crew take that one on!

I can agree with that, but I really don’t think that was what was meant.

I don’t actually care what they release, aside from those previously released by Rhino. The 20th Anniversary release could contain 4 random episodes (say, Jungle Goddess, Future War, City Limits and 12 to the Moon) and I’ll be excited and ready to buy. I “want” them all [in nice, high-quality, commercial DVD].

Chris # 14 happy: for the Sci-Fi ep…either Soultaker or Diabolik…the latter being the final series episode.
I think Soultaker over Diabolik due to Diabolik being owned by Paramount, but you never know, maybe Shout Factory can pull it off, and maybe Paramount knows there is money to be made off MST3K versions of Diabolik..Im getting that gut feeling again…maybe 101,201,706 and 1013 will be the episodes…if they can get Diabolik they could get Universal titles too
    I cant wait to be 100% honest…
As far as the $$$ spent, im a fan and I will support MST3K by purchasing the DVD, of course the less expensive the better, and I pre-ordered from Amazon…in all honesty I dont care what episodes are on as long as it is
    A- not a double dip
    B- good quality and treatment
I do like some episodes better than others, in fact the shows that I am guessing will be on the 20th Anniversary set are ones I like…but in reality it doesnt matter..

Robot Monster, any of the 4 Lippert films from Season 2 (Rocketship X-M, Lost Continent, Jungle Goddess and King Dinosaur), First Spaceship on Venus, any Sandy Frank movie, Outlaw of Gor, Beast of Yucca Flats, any of those would be good for starters! But, whatever episodes they release, I will want the set for sure.

Nobody mentions Revenge of The Creature, but that would be a logical accompanying episode to Laserblast. It wasn’t particularly funny, unfortunately. But it was the next episode in the timeline, beginning where Laserblast ended.

I’d be happy to see any of those Lippert films too. Especially Rocketship X-M because of the debuts of Frank & Kevin. I agree that Beast of Yucca Flats needs to be released. It’s the denoument of the Coleman Francis trifecta, and it makes no sense that it hasn’t come out yet.

Speaking of Robot Monster, I’d love to see that one redone by either of the current two riffing entities.

The problem with Revenge of the Creature is that it IS owned by Universal, and there is some negative history with them and Best Brains ( I think ).. I wont believe any Universal title will be easy to get..if they do get one, maybe the chances will be better
Come to think of it here is food for thought
Universal did release MST3K the movie which the title is This Island Earth..that is one of their monster scifi hits..
    hmmm
    101, 706, 801 and 1013..??
Maybe they can do a Lippert set with
201,203,208 & Radar Secret Service (I forget the ep but its a 5th Season with Mike)

Well I for one and actually happy to see this press release from Shout Factory. It goes to show that that they’re making sure that they don’t have any licensing fiascoes like Rhino did with Volume 10 and Gamera. Good to see they’re more in it over there.

And if anyone over at Shout Factory is reading this forum for customer feedback, put my vote down for “It Lives By Night” and/or “Final Sacrifice” to be included in those upcoming releases.

I would think that some of these studios movies such as Alien from LA would see that there is $$$ to be made with MST3K versions..it also depends on the relationship ShoutFactory has with the big studios MGM,Paramount Universal. Obviously we all have favorites we want out, the first few releases should tell us what direction they are going..

No offense, but are you like a million years old?

I have never had a problem getting a replacement at no extra charge from online retailers the *very* few times I have had a lost shipment over the last 10 years.

If you’re paying brick & mortar retail prices, you’re spending a lot more money than shopping by mail could possibly cost you through lost packages.
