Weekend Discussion Thread: MSTed Movies You’d Like to See Redone

Alert reader Kenneth Morgan writes:

Re-makes are not new to MST, since the Gamera movies were first done on KTMA and CT did their own memorable take on “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians”. I’m just wondering which movies would you like to see RT or CT take another crack at. My choice would be “Superdome”, originally done on KTMA. It’s an OK TV movie with a typical “Grand Hotel” multiple-storyline plot and a lot of riffable moments. The problem was that the KTMA version, being ad-libbed, has a fair amount of dead spots. At one point, Joel even says, “I can’t think of anything funny to say.” I think this one would work for a second try. An alternate choice would be “The Green Slime”, though I suppose that one would technically be a first try.

I’m going to go with “Invaders from the Deep.” I think a marionation movie could be very riffable. Which movie would you pick, and why?

Being one of the first people to comment, I don’t have to type the “I’m not sure if anyone has said this” sentence so I’ll go with Robot Monster. It’s got a terrible story, hokey monster, and cheap special effects, perfect material to go back and riff on.

    Hamlet. That story has potential!

In all seriousness, I think Touch of Satan has a good movie in there somewhere. If you get some actors who can hold your interest and speed things up a little bit, you’ve got something worth watching.

Because of the unliklihood of their DVD release I would like to see them redo the KTMA episodes that weren’t re-done for season three. Robot Holocaust, Robot Monster, and Robot vs. Aztec Mummy could get a do-over. I’d love to see completed versions of The Phantom Creeps and Undersea Kingdom serials. I think Commando Cody could use a do-over too.

I’ll go with the KTMA movies for obvious reasons. Legend Films has Phase IV so I think it they could get Joel/Josh/Trace’s permission to re-record their ad-libs from it and then Mike/Kevin/Bill adding new lines to the rest of the movie, we may get a VOD. I’d also like to see the MST Live movies re-riffed for those of us who never saw them. This Island Earth in it’s entirety and World Without End & the home game The Day The World Ended. BTW, did Best Brains ever have the Live shows recorded? With CT & RT releasing Live DVDs, it would be nice to see MST Live on DVD.

CT re-do’s; Any SyFy era movies.

    RT re-do’s; Any Comedy/KTMA movies.

I would love to see how the two groups would handle and change the riffs. The only rule would be no copying! That includes Crow.

A sequel to Hobgoblins is in the works with a lot of the original actors, so why not a MST sequel?

I second “Robot Holocaust”. That movie was so cheesy, so bad, and so ripoff-ish that it would DEFINITELY make for a great do-over.

As for a non-season one offering, and don’t get me wrong here, I’d like to see “Pod People” again. Not re-done, but perhaps some more riffs added. It only had ~8.2 RPMs. Just a thought.

I seem to recall that Rifftrax has the Juvenile Delinquency short (originally paired with The Atomic Brain) in their catalog. I haven’t actually watched it, so I’m not sure if it’s a true do-over or if they reused the original riffs (which were brilliant).

I would pick The Crawling Eye, as I recall the riffing for that one being a trifle anemic.

The two robot movies, or for that matter anything from season one. The riffing is so sparse in season one and most of the films are pretty riffable. Have never seen the KTMAs but I imagine it would be the same case with those.

I was going to say ROBOT HOLOCAUST,too, but a few beat me to it.I would like to see THE SLIME PEOPLE and UNTAMED YOUTH.Of course anything from the KTMA season, except the Gamera movies, since they were done in later episodes.

I’ am going with Legend of the Dinosaur from KTMA. I always found it odd that this was the only Japanese movie that wasn’t redone for Comedy Central.

Let me suggest “remakes” of some of the Sandy Frank products, using better available versions of the original material. While Joel and the ‘bots get a lot of mileage out of Frank’s often wretched adaptations–the incompetent dubbing, the choppy editing, and so forth–it’s still a little cheap to make fun of.

  16. Kenneth Morgan says:

I’m also going to go with the idea of re-doing “Robot Holocaust”. Mainly, this is just for the inevitable choruses of “Some Like it Hot” whenever a character mentions the Power Station. (After the sixth or seventh repeat, I can just hear Joel going, “That it the LAST time you can ever do that.”)

And thanks for dubbing me an “alert reader”. I appreciate that.

SST Death Flight would be fun. All star cast, Airport genre and decent prints available. They did a pretty good job of this for KTMA, but I’d love to see what they could do with the whole writing staff.

Oh, and #15 makes a really good point. The Sandy Frank edits and dubbing are terrible and force a lot of the riffs to be about the cheesy job he did. The earlier American versions by AIP are much better and would still be great for riffing the movies themselves. (Doesn’t Shout! Factory own the rights to some of the AIP Gamera movies?)

I’d particularly like to see any season one redone,
especially to improve on the background and general
quality of the skits, which seem to have been much
more done on the cheap. I suppose they had far less
    resources and time.

  20. Two Bricks Shy of a Load says:

The KTMA episodes included “Invaders from the Deep,” the first full blown MST3K episode. It’s characters were all puppets. How rich would it be to have had Crow and Servo face to screen with their own kind. Having puppets riff on puppets would be surreal. On top of that, this movie has the voice talents of underappreciated Lois Maxwell, the original Bond hungry Miss Moneypenny from the earlier 007 movies.

Alas, even if the movie were to be redone, Crow and Servo are enjoying retirement somewhere in the Great North Central region. Even sadder, the movie is listed in the episode guide as “No fan copy is known to exist.” The only hint we have of it is a wonderful split second clip in the KTMA introduction segment. Sad, but some things seem not to be in the cards.

I think it would be interesting to see a Mike, Kevin and Bill version of “Manos” The Hands Of Fate, just because of how much more they would savage the film than what joel did. Nothing against the joel version by the way…

They should have done more Godzilla movies. I know about Toho needing to remove the sharp metal pole from their rearend, but there were a lot more Godzilla movies that they could have dome instead of just those two. Not that there’s anything wrong with the ones they did. In fact, I’ve read there are people who will only watch the MSTied version of Godzilla vs. Megalon. If you’ve seen the original one (like I have), then you’d see why.

I would love to see both CT and RF re-do the Coleman Francis trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, I love the MSTed versions. In fact, they are 3 of my favorite episodes. I love them so much, I would like to have multiple riffed versions.

I’m going to go with season one – especially “Women of the Prehistoric Planet.” The riffing was great (it’s the episode that got me hooked on the show) but imagine what it could be later.

I hadn’t seen any of the KTMA eps (sans the ones they re-did for CC,) but given what the budget was then vs. what it became (not to mention the writers,) I would say those would probably be goo re-do fodder.

  26. The Toblerone Effect says:

For me, I think they could do a better job with “Beginning of the End”. I always viewed that ep as the S5 clunker. My friends and I found several small details within the film that could have been riffed on, yet M&tB didn’t notice.

On a side note, when/if the so-called second “Manos” movie comes out, I LOVE to see either CT or RT get their hands on it to riff.

We shouldn’t ignore the shorts. Since RiffTrax has made a specialty of riffing short movies and done fairly well (though not always) even with the dullest starting material, it’d be interesting to see RT go back to some of the Comedy-Central material that Joel &c. didn’t quite seem to know what to do with, like the “General Hospital” stuff.

They have redone one short, What About Juvenile Delinquency?, but it’d been done well enough before and the remake, while amusing, hasn’t much to recommend it over the original.

  30. Iggy Pop's Brother Steve Pop says:

I’ll nominate a couple of my favorite KTMA’s: “City on Fire” and “The Last Chase.”

I know the obvious thing is to pick a movie where the riffing didn’t go so well the first time, rather than one that was pretty good. But my rationale is that if Joel, Trace, and Josh were able to make these two into fairly good episodes back in KTMA days, today they (and Frank and Mary Jo) could hit them out of the park.

I’m kind of surprised they didn’t redo “The Last Chase” on CC. I imagine they would have had the opportunity to get the rights when they did so many other movies distributed by Crown International Pictures in Season 2.

#1 The green Slime….Giant turd monsters with tenticles that shoot electricity and make fart sounds when you shoot them dead. What could be better than that.
#2 SST – Death Flight…. B star celebrities galore. The riffing was a little light on the original outing. This can be even better than the Santa conquers the Martian re-do.

Count me in as one who wishes they would re-do “MST3K: The Movie”. Also “Zombie Nightmare”, “Night of the Blood Beast” and “Racket Girls”. All four of these could be better.

I agree with Green Switch. “The Castle of Fu Manchu” was more painful than funny at times, no matter how hard they tried (and let’s face it, they gave up in some spots). I bet either CT or RT! could take it in a new direction. And I also DARE THEM!

I think that CT should re-do “Radar Secret Service”. The original just missed the mark a llot for me. Plus I think that there is a lot of very riffable moments in there.

I must be weird, because I’ve liked this episode just fine. I think that Joel &c. took just the right approach with it, an unusual one for the show (although Mike &c. would do something a bit similar for Invasion of the Neptune Men), and I suspect that any attempted remake by either Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic would be…well, sort of like almost everything else they’ve done. It’d be funny, probably, but it wouldn’t be special.

    THE SLIME PEOPLE

  45. Timber says:

Just about anything from Season 1 I think they could go back and do a bit better (after 9 more seasons of practice!). I’d say ‘Mad Monster’ simply because it has so many elements that make for outstanding riffing in other movies. (nutty scientist, pseudowarwilf, slow groundskeeper, ect).

  46. Richard the Lion Footed says:

I’d like to see a full redo of “Green Slime.”

This was the pilot that started it all and I’d like to see the “full circle” of how they would do it now that they are all pros.

Also, it is a pretty fun movie in its own right.

“The Last Chase” was actually one of the better KTMA episodes, but they could do it better now.

104 – WOMEN OF THE PREHISTORIC PLANET because it has a great cast in an incomprehensible film. John Agar, Paul Gilbert, Gavin MacLeod, Glenn Langan and Lyle Waggoner. So much talent going to waste, it has to be done right.

107 – Robot Monster. This is a classically bad movie that should get the professional treatment of these well seasoned professionals. The movie MUST be in PD so it should be a Cinematic Titanic Live.

109 – Project Moon Base – Actually NOT a bad movie and not a bad season 1 segment. But come on, Hayden Rorke, Colonel Bellows!?!?!?

111 – Moon Zero Two – Also a good Season 1 episode, but with a good print and seasoned talent of either Joel & his crew or Mike and his, this could become a classic.

113 – Black Scorpion – I can’t believe this one is not public domain and could be another Cinematic Titanic “Live” show. I mean come on, they ran out of money and could not even finish the FX.

So much gold that could be freshly mined.

  47. I don’t really care to see any more “re-riffs”. I know there’s a history of remakes: KTMA episodes remade, RT re-doing the Mike-only films, CT re-riffing “SCCtM”. I just prefer new stuff. Philisophically, I’m not that crazy about the fact that they remade those KTMAs, though I understand why they did it and most of the remakes are classics. Some of them are amongst my favorites eps. And I love the CT “SCCtM”. So it may seem contradictory given how good “second passes” have sometimes been, I just think it’s best to let those stand as they are and move on to new things.

One I’d like to see redone is The Million Eyes of Sumuru, a film they aired in the KTMA days. It has so much potential – bizarre casting, an aimlessly rambling plot, and some blatantly kinky scenes. If nothing else, it’d be good to see a re-release of that film, since it’s very hard to find any copy at all (besides the KTMA broadcast).
