The big new of this review is confirmation that an interview with Mr. Rowsdower himself, Bruce Mitchell is one of the bonus features! And an intro to the Crawling Eye by Joel! (sorry if these bits were mentioned in another news story and I missed it, but I don’t think I have)

In retrospect, Vancouver was probably wise to have
Shatner at the Winter olympics final ceremonies and
not TS. That could have been embarassing.

Meh, like I need a review to convince me to buy this, or any, MST3K set.

I managed to grab a copy from my usual used video store for thirty bucks the other week. The guy sometimes gets stuff in early. Believe me, it’s a great set.

The Amazon price has fallen back down to $32! Sampo, please feel free to promote your webstore link to it.

I enjoyed both the VIDEO VAULT and the VIDEO VERDICT reviews. I have to say I do not recall any out & out negitive reviews of any MST3K DVD release. Are there any out there? I’d like to read them just to see what they had to say. I belong to many a fandom and I enjoy the many different takes on the stuff I like. I’m not complaining that the MST3K DVDs only seem to get very positive reviews, but someone out there may just “not get it” and write a rant review for our enjoyment
Any links?

I think it should be noted that Amazon.com’s price for this set is now quite good. It’s down to $32.99.
Remember when Amazon canceled those early pre-orders when they re-priced the DVD set and some were calling “shennaningans?” Well, that worrying was all for nothing.

I agree with creepygirl to a certain point. It would be nice to see a review of someone that DOES get it (the show) and write a negative/honest review. Such as “…the movie selection is week.” or “…the audio/visual is bad.” on any of the volume sets.
The only case that I have heard of a negative review is Volume 11. Some people that have bought Volume 11 claim that 2 of the movies are difficult to see and the audio is terrible on one of the movies. These reviews are fans of the show, they are warning others that if you do buy it, there are some major technical problems.
Volume 11 is the only set I don’t own because of this. Every time I look at an official review or another review on this set, they praise it because it IS MST3K and don’t mention any of the technical quality of the discs. I even tried e-mailing Sampo about it, and to this day he hasn’t responded about the quality of that set.

Going to be tough waiting the ~ two-weeks for these to arrive. Been paying $59 @ Barnes & Noble on release day Tuesdays. Thanks economy!

About the technical issues in these releases, the only problem I can think of is on the Merlin’s Shop disc. When Cooper is in his car talking to himself and recording it, there’s about 3-5 seconds where the screen goes completely dark. I don’t think I noticed it the first time and when it was obvious, it was too late for an exchange but it’s minor enough that I can live with it. Anyway I’ll absolutely get V.17, and make sure the executioners don’t get into the house, after all spring is about 2 weeks away.

The Bruce Westbrook review is good but I’ll nitpick this statement:
…Blood Waters of Dr. Z. I swear, it’s got more quips per minute that most of the series’ shows.
This struck me as odd, and Andrew’s MST3K Review Site confirms the Riff Per Minute count as 8.143 (Slow) even slower than The Beatniks (8.535) which he claims to have just watched. The average RPM for the series is 9.

Chief McCloud,
If you worry about Amazon shipping just join the Amazon Prime — really, anyone who orders more than once or twice a year from them really ought to join (and you can get three or four folks to split the price if that’s an issue).
You get new releases the same day the B/M stores get them with preorders, and it doesn’t cost a thing (for shipping, that is). I’ve been a Prime member for years and it’s the only way to go.

Yeah Amazon Prime doesn’t cost anything to ship except the $75 per year fee. Its a good deal if you order from Amazon regularly but if you don’t order say 5 or more times a year from them its not. Also you can get free shipping and just get it a day or two later, I usually never have time to watch the releases on the first day anyway.

mikek #8 – M’eh, I’m still calling shennaningans. Amazon goes to great lengths to guarantee one price, EXCEPT when that guarantee isn’t convenient for them. “Oops, the ones that cost $33 didn’t get delivered, but these right here are $45.”
Ummm, what?

Finnias #14 – Good catch! Sounds like Mr. Westbrook had better do some research in the future!

Thanks MegK, that’s sound advise. Probably still spring for the full price on release day and send the preorder as a gift. Patience isn’t really my thing.

It’s easy to get confused when you mis-quote someone.
I honestly don’t know what you were going for with this. Did you deliberately take pieces from each of my other posts and weave them into complete nonsense? :???:

Hey, nitpickers! Sorry to disappoint you with my woeful disregard (or unawareness) of a “riffs per minute” tally on another website, but I stand by my statement. Everyone has his or her own definition of what constitutes a riff or joke or jibe, and mine is when it makes me laugh. Otherwise, it’s just talk. I laughed more frequently watching Blood Waters of Dr. Z than just about any MST movie I’ve seen. Therefore, it had more riffs per minute in my mind, if not in that of your source for arbitrarily quantified minutiae. I suppose I could get all Bill Shatner and say “get a life,” but really, any fan of MST is a friend of mine. I just didn’t sign the pledge to follow someone else’s criteria for acknowledging the breadth of a show’s humor.

Bruce @ 21,
I kind of knew what you meant in your review and found it funny that some fans would call you on how funny you thought an episode was. It is your review and your opinion, Nuff Said. And c’mon fellas, those RPM numbers are kind of arbitrary.

Nice review, like I really need one,but what I’m wanting to know is: when is Shout going to give us the movies for the next box set?? Usually they already have them listed.Just wondering..

#21, referring to my post #14 & Andrew’s @ #18:
I wasn’t critiquing the critics response to the overall humor of the episode, only his claim of it’s number of riffs. Like I wrote, a “nitpick” – defined: to criticize by focusing on inconsequential details.
Andrew’s RPM counts never claim to provide the number of laughs generated by said riffs, only their quantity. If you look at his ratings, you’ll see he judges the episodes on their overall quality, not just riff-counts. I never found “Dr. Z” all that hilarious and rather slow, so Bruce’s glowing review took me by surprise. Frankly, I’m always pleased when a fellow MSTie likes an episode more than me and can explain his reasons in an articulate manner. I only looked at Andrew’s site to verify my suspicion that it did not actually have “more quips per minute that most of the series’ shows.”
The RPM counts are objective facts, not the “arbitrary” opinion of a fan. How funny one finds an episode is subjective. I liked Bruce’s review, and said so in my post. Sorry if anyone took offense. That said, I’m looking forward to this release next week and the announcement of the next set of titles.

Anyone else run into a very loud audio “screech” on Final Sacrifice DVD? Think it was around 25 minutes in (will double check), when the shot is following the black Gran Torino at a low side angle driving down the street.

I could have sworn that I renewed my pre-order with Amazon when the price fell back to $33, but there was no record of it. Oh well, guess I’ll wait afew more days. I did take the opportunity to use the link on this site, so Sampo don’t say I never did anything for you!

And once again my local Best Buy disappoints. Two clueless staffers looking for two copies. I won’t ruin it for the rest of you, but looks like Sat News will get a little boost from me (indirectly at least).
Never had this problem with the Rhino releases, but I’m sure it has little to do with that. Maybe the Denver BBs just suck that much. One way or another, this set will be mine!

Why not just order it from Amazon? I pre ordered the set awhile back and it was waiting for me when i came home from work yesterday. No fuss.
Also I am getting the audio glitch in the Final Sacrifice too, its a brief second of static. Its a shame but not a deal breaker

This is a little irrelevant to the topic, and I apologize for that, but since it’s DVD-related I wanted to throw this out there.
Last night Amazon was listing only four copies of “The Crawling Hand” left in stock, but without their usual “more on the way” tag when they expect to be able to reorder a title…so that might be the next release to join the Rhino Graveyard. Just a heads up.

creepygirl @22,
Thanks. I’m fine with other people painstakingly trying to quantify MST’s laughs with “riffs per minute” or whatever, but as I said, I never endorsed or signed up for that, and as you said, it’s their arbitrary assessment of what constitutes an individual riff, quip or whatever. Regardless of someone else’s formula, Blood Waters of Dr. Z made me laugh more than the average MST episode — a lot more, in fact. The title character is such a pathetic loser, as is the stereotypical Southern sheriff who calls the African American researcher “boy,” giving Mike and the ‘bots HUGE targets for heaping their comic scorn, and “boy” do they heap it–but good. Well done, lads! And to those who aren’t as fond of the episode, I say, “Different strokes.”

@ #37 thank you for the heads up…my completist tendencies just dropped another $200+ on all the standalone DVDs, even a New copy of the out of print The Hellcats. :-)
With my luck, that will be in Vol XIX! :-0
What would you do? I have a sealed VHS of #309 The Amazing Colossal Man. Never opened, from the old Rhino club days. I’m not an e-bay profiteer and I’ve only seen this ep during the original season airing.
What do you think, sirs?

@ both Mike 42 and Mondorick 28 –
I heard it too, it was unnerving. My copy if actually happens twice, the second time a little bit later after the first. Perhaps an error during production of the disk? Any chance Shout! will offer replacements?

I heard it as well. Startling, but hardly worth replacing the disk over.

I too hear that audio scratch, both of them on mine, the Shout Factory customer support told me there is nothing that can be done about it. @26:06 after the Canada Song host segment they return to the theater Zapp is trying to start the truck, there’s a loud snap, then 30 seconds later (26:36) there is s shot of the front tire of the cult’s car, that’s when I hear a loud scratch.
