Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite MST3K-Related Web Sites

Alert reader David writes:

Now that Satellite News has revamped the Umbilicus links page, we readers could suggest and discuss websites that enhance our MST experience. I have my favorites, and I’m sure you do too (needless to say, Satellite News is tops on my list).

As a relatively new MSTie, the internet has been essential to deepening my appreciation of the show. The web abounds with largely fan-made sites featuring episode reviews, show histories, cast interviews, screencaps, video clips, and annotated reference guides.

There are a lot fewer sites than there used to be, but there are still some very good ones out there.

One note about this: Our system gets very suspicious of comments with links in them (because we are trying to keep spam out). So it might be best if you DON’T include the “http://” part of the URL of any sites you list. If you do, you might find your post held up in our “pending approval” queue.

One other request: We’re a family site, and we’d really rather you didn’t post links to sites that have adult content or links.

I actually have mst3kinfo.com set as my homepage, mostly for This Date in MSTory. The only other MST3k sites I regularly check are mst3k.com and (technically) RiffTrax.com. But I will say that the Internet Movie Database (imdb.com) and Wikipedia are great resources for looking up obscure references in the show, one of my favorite MST-related pass-times. The Prelinger Archives (www.archive.org/details/prelinger) is a database of instructional films dating from the 30s to the present day. Rick Prelinger, the archivist, supplied Best Brains with the vast majority of the shorts used in the show, not to mention those used by the RiffTrax crew.

MST3K.org is a favorite of mine because not only does he have nearly every episode, but also has convention footage/appearances,movies that MST3K should have done and other movies,too.Plus,www.imdb.com is a good one as well, since I can look up a movie that MST3K did and find more info about it.

You can’t leave out You Tube and Google videos (or whatever they call the site, I’m not sure). Whether you like it or not, there are plenty of MST3K episodes on these sites, as well as unmisted versions and clips. You also can listen to lots of the music from the show, or related to it.

I even get to hear the Italian version of the “Deep Deep Down”, the theme song from Diabolik. It’s catchy, even though I don’t quite understand the lyrics. She sings something about an OB-GYN (weird, I know).

Plus lots of Rifftrax clips by fans who have done the work of synching the audio, which I will never have time to do in my lifetime. And Cinematic Titanic clips too.

I have this site in my drop down address bar for daily viewing. My favorites list has mst3k.com, dapcentral, castleforrester.com, mst3k.wikia.com, mst3kfanguide.blogspot.com, and the agonybooth.com I like imdb and wikipedia too sometimes to see how if mst3k will be mentioned in an actor’s bio like Dean Fredericks. His bio says that Phantom Planet is popular to this day but doesn’t give the main reason why.
Duffy Dyer?! Who next? Phil Roof? J C Martin? Chris Cannizzaro? John Felske?

Totally off topic, but about Mike and the bots
    fetish on pronouncing puma “pooma”,
    1) Just rewatched Cave Dwellers and I believe
both Crow and Tom Servo say “pyuma” in rifts
(I believe around the time the frightening
Invisible People  attack Ator and Thong).
    2) If puma is pronounced “pooma” why isn’t
pure “poor” music “moosik” etc? Hmm? ;-)

Of course you could also ask if the British pronounce
zee “zed” then why not bee “bed”, cee “ced”, etc.?

    Mighty Jacks MST3K Review (mightyjackmst.com)
Colorful layout, thoughtful grading system, entertaining reviews complete with host segment breakdowns, bits of trivia, and list of favorite riffs. Each episode has it’s own forum page where readers discuss it. Plus MJ keeps up with Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic projects.

MST3K Reviews by Greg Eichelberger (svamcentral.org/mst/reviews)
If you ever thought you disliked an episode, give these reviews a read. He is one of the harshest critics I’ve yet found online, but he grades episodes pretty fairly overall. Piss-poor layout, filled with typos, and oddly incomplete, but still worth a look.

    ………

Both Skenderberg and Gizmonic Temp post here frequently and their respective sites are excellent:

War of the Colossal MST3K Fan Guide (mst3kfanguide.blogspot.com)
Written in a blog-style format and updated almost daily. In addition to reviews and plot synopsis of every MST episode, he covers the RT & CT projects, including every RT short. Very thorough.

    Andrew’s Mst3k Review Site (magicmarkerweb.com/mst3kreview/main.htm)
Famous for his RPM (riffs-per-minute) ranking of every episode. He’s also got letter grades for every show and brief reviews of most of them. He is a ruthless judge however: this week’s Space Children ranks a D-, and end of Season 9’s Delta Knights gets an F. Ouch! (BTW, Andrew, give your homepage a proper HTML title. It’s a little tough to find on Google)

    ………

    MST3K Review (mst3kreview.com)
Old school frame-style layout, requiring clicking through three pages to get to the episode you want. But the reviews are solid, often with one each from Don and Forrest, sometimes a third guy. Good bunch of ranked lists from each author buried under About This Site/Personal Favorites/Author (ugh!), including favorite host segments and invention exchanges. Plus they are co-sponsors of…

    MST3K: The Discussion Board (forrestcrow.proboards.com)
Just registered there myself. Pretty intimidating number of threads and users there, many whom I’m sure are regulars here. The “Esoteric References VI” thread is great: every MySTie should familiarize themselves with it. You needn’t be a member to check out a lot of the board, so try it out.

I’ve a few more to sites to mention but I’ll save them for another post.

Well, they’re not technically websites, but i can recommend a couple of things:
    ‘Cult of UHF’ on iTunes has a number of downloadable video podcasts of public domain movies, including a few un-MST’ed original versions;
    and
imTOO (www.imtoo.com) DVD audio ripper-someone on these boards recommended their program that converts audio files from DVDs to mp3s. Thanks to them i have many MST3K eps loaded on my iPod for walking around or listening to while falling asleep at home!

#19 ck – Totally off topic, but about Mike and the bots fetish on pronouncing puma “pooma”…

The “pyuma” pronunciation in Cave Dwellers is a callback to Ep. 206 – Ring of Terror. That’s how the groundskeeper says it when he’s searching for his cat in the beginning of the film. It’s sheer coincidence that years later they’d riff a film called Puma Man featuring an actor who says it the same way.

Kafka Was Right #14 – Ooooo!! I didn’t know about UtterNerd. Firing up uTorrent now!

Finnias #21 – Thanks! It’s a labor of love, and in constant motion! Pardon my ignorance, and I ask this in all seriousness, but what do you mean by proper HTML title? Yeah, I know I’m a bit hard to Google, but it’s something I’d like to remedy. Thanks for your help.

  27. GizmonicTemp says:

Finnias #21 – I forgot to mention “Delta Knights”. It just never grabbed my interest. David Warner = cool = “Tron” or “Christmas Carol”, period. I can’t watch “Delta” without longing for “Cave Dwellers” or “Deathstalker”. Also, an “F” doesn’t mean I hate the episode, it just means that it’s not a part of my usual rotation.

Josh Way’s MST covers (mst3k.joshway.com) are astonishing things of beauty.

  29. Finnias Jones says:

GizmonicTemp #26 & 27: Andrew (if I may call you Andrew) what I meant by “proper HTML title” is that when the homepage appears, the name of the page in the top of the browser reads:

    …magicmarkerweb.com/mst3kreview/main.htm

and when I bookmark the page, I get the same thing. If you go into the actual HTML of the page you should be able to enter “Andrew’s Mst3k Review Site” between the “title” and “/title” tags. This is what search engines will use as the official name of your site.

And re. “Delta Knights” – yeah, I’m not a big fan either. I mainly mentioned it to demonstrate your willingness to “call ’em as you see ’em.” It provided a weak ending to an already mixed season that nonetheless included a few MaSTerpieces. And I’ll raise your love of David Warner with Time Bandits, Time After Time, and The Company of Wolves.

    My favorites, Part 2:

    MST3K Booyaka (mst3k.booyaka.com)
A great resource, essentially a Yellow Pages for MST links. Found many of my favorite sites via this single page. Today I looked for it…and it’s gone! Object not found!/Error 404. Hopefully this is just temporary, but I doubt it.

    The Annotated MST (annotatedmst.com)
Has less than a third of the episodes but they are thorough. Lack of context, timestamp, and who said the line makes it sometimes confusing. Occasionally updated. The next two from our Episode Guide marathon, Hobgoblins and Touch of Satan, are both there.

The Distributed MST3K Annotation Project (www.dapcentral.org/ap/episodes)
This is a very incomplete work-in-progress, with contributions made by fans. Each episode has a page, where people post quotes from the show with a timestamp, and usually try to explain them. A good place to look for your favorite lines and where in the episode they were said.

    Too Much Information (highspeedplus.com/~dascott/tmi.htm)
Very incomplete. He only has 11 episodes (including The Movie) annotated, but they are extremely detailed. Each one is broken up by host and theater segment, making it easy to find where the riffs take place.

Thanks to everyone for the great suggestions.

Of course, now I got a laundry list of sites to check out. Hours of fun! Thanks everyone!!

And I posted it in last weeks episode entry of The Space Children, but I think that all MSTies would appreciate TRAILERSFROMHELL.COM, a website devoted to showing movie trailers from days gone by, with commentary by some genre gurus. (You can also watch the trailers without commentary). John Landis, Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Jack Hill, Rick Baker, Larry Cohen, Edgar Wright, Roger Corman, and more all contribute to the site. New trailers every Mon, Wed, and Friday! MST movies with trailers include, Monster a Go-Go, It Conquered the World, Giant Gila Monster, This Island Earth, Beast of Yucca Flats, Phantom Planet, The Green Slime, Tormented, Squirm, Danger Diablok!, and The Space Children, amongst others.

    Check it!!
