Weekend Discussion Thread: Deleted Scenes

Alert reader Andrew writes:

So that we could enjoy host segs and shorts, MST3K often had to remove scenes from a target movie so that they could cram everything into two hours. I’d like to know if any Msties have seen any unMstied movies and what kind of scenes they cut.
For instance, in “It Lives by Night”, they cut a scene of the sheriff escorting Kathy back to her motel room and trying to kiss her. A very icky scene indeed, but it adds a bit of meaning to Mike’s riff which claims the sheriff is a pervert…
In “Warrior of the Lost World”, MST shows Nastasia shooting Prossor once, but she actually plugs him five or six times, and point blank in the head to boot!
In “Mitchell” they skip over Mitch killing John Saxon!
I hate that I know all of these.

Here’s another one: in episode 704 – THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN: Just before that confusing moment in which Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith is seen sobbing in a police car and a photographer is taking pictures of everything in sight, they cut a scene in which the photographer gets the her to pose and bounce around, then forcibly removes her top. She starts hitting him as he continues to take pictures, and then trips over the Bill-Gates-look-alike corpse.
Anybody know any others?

I have watched Eegah unMSTied and there are several scenes cut. One involves Eegah coming into the camp as Roxie and Arch Hall Jr are napping. He gets scared away and leaves his club behind. Another is of Eegah getting pretty grabby and fondling Roxie, which does not help to elicit much sympathy for his character. Conversely, the last scene I can remember being cut is Eegah ‘explaining’ to his mummified family that he has to leave to search for Roxie. That scene seemed to be a very effective piece of acting from Kiel, and adds more sympathy to the character. At least in this case, the cuts seemed to balance out a bit…

  2. I saw the uncut version of “Manos: The Hands Of Fate” (God help me). The scene they cut was where the Master slaps the hell out of his one wife. It was pretty disturbing. I could understand why the Brains decided to omit it. The movie was torture enough without having to see a woman brutalized.

It’s strange that I am one of the first to respond. You East Coasters have an advantage over those of us on the left coast.

In The Giant Mantis there is one scene where the mantis walks over a ridge in the snow. Cutting it makes no difference.

Fugitive Alien, Time of the Apes and Mighty Jack from the KTMA era are less cut up than their later versions. They all seemed less confused with the additional footage. Not much though.

Well, there is the mad dog scene from Boggy Creek 2. It’s not too much to write home about. Basically college group gets chased into a barn by a rabid dog, who is then shot.

I haven’t found it yet so I am still curious about the missing parts of Angels’ Revenge. At least one entire character is ‘missing.’ Near the end they say something like “Miller will take care of everything” and we never know who that is!

Second place for me is the missing John Saxon death scene from Mitchell. Didn’t the radio call it a ‘dune buggy accident?’

In “Werewolf” there is extended footage of Richard Lynch driving thru the desert at the beginning of the movie. There is also some panning of the bar that is cut out. They were just there to pad out the movie. There is also a scene at the party where right before he meets the Absolutely Fascinating Girl our Hero snarkily rejects the offered car ride and promise of sexual favors from the Girl Who Needs Pants At Once.
I tried watching Hercules Unchained last month and I couldn’t make heads or tails about what’s going on in the movie. Can anyone help?

In “Beginning of the End” (starring Peter Graves–graduate of the U of M), Peggy Castle sneaks around the roadblock and takes pictures of the destroyed town, only to have her camera confiscated by a soldier. In the following scene, at National Guard headquarters, she requests the return of her camera. However, the previous scene shown on MST3K clearly shows her putting the camera in her car! Then again, had they left that scene in the show we never would known the truth about Dr. Forrester and Frank!

Hobgoblins cuts out the scenes with Mr. McCreedy’s boss and an earlier scene with the red shorts kid on the phone with fantasia.
Squirm has the skinny girl topless (nothing to write hom about).
Space Mutiny cuts out some scene developing the crippled character some more and showing how much of the establishment he was.

Squirm has a very disturbing scene where Roger falls down in the boat and the worms crawl under his skin and (presumably) into his brain.

Likewise, the Brains omitted a scene from The Magic Sword where the two knights are standing with their clothes in tatters, staring at a sun-like object. In the original, you get a good look at them after they turn around and you can that their skin has burnt off. Also unpleasant.

I actually caught an un-MSTied airing of Time Chasers on a “premium” movie channel once (I also caught Mitchell on the same channel the following month- must have a MSTie in the programming department), and the incredibly dorky chase scene between Chinbutt Hockeyhair and the Evilco goons is much longer. They cut about 4-5 minutes after Chinbutt steals the bike and takes off into the woods. It was probably cut for time (I mean really, who didn’t want more Young Mike?), but the hero pulls off some ridiculously forced BMX-style stunts the Brains would’ve had fun with.

The whole scenes weren’t cut, but here was nudity cut from both Giant Spider Invasion (just before Terry, the “little slutster,” gets attacked in the bedroom) and Squirm (during the shower scene in the opening credits). Approach with great caution. I also breifly owned an un-MTSied DVD of Future War, and the only real difference I noticed was the length of the fight scenes. They still make no sense, and Jean Claude Gosh Darn still takes his own shirt off.

Cousin Billy and younger sister Terry have a charming scene in which Billy suggests they become “kissin’ cousins” and she sends him home for a cold shower. Actually, a shower really would not be enough for Billy, but the average viewer might need one.

My mom bought me a VHS copy of “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” when I was a real little kid, probably mid-’80s. I knew that movie front and back and was happy to see the MST version of it, which cut out a couple scenes, mainly little stuff, like a longer speech by Chochem and more mugging by Droppo. As far as I can tell, the Cinematic Titanic version wasn’t edited at all.

  17. Bigzilla says:

The most notable cut I have seen is Gamera vs Barugon. They essentially leave out a 5 minute fight scene – the first one where Gamera gets frozen. It really does make the movie more confusing as at one point Gamera is on the way and the next he’s literally out cold. Also, Joel & the Bots comment on how Gamera isn’t in this film much. Normally where there is an edit they do not make a big deal.

In addition, if anyone else has read the Dark Tower 7 by Stephen King, one of the characters reminisces about watching the movie The Lost Continent. He remembers a scene where a man and a woman hide while a T-Rex and another dinosaur fight. Now that certainly does NOT sound like the MST version. Has anyone seen the unedited version and know for sure?

A year or so ago I got to watch the unMSTied version of Squirm on one of the movie channels on cable. The first major difference was near the very beginning of the movie when the skinny red haired girl from the movie gets out of the shower and theirs a short topless scene with her. I never would’ve guessed this movie would’ve had a topless scene in it, and if I had expected one I would’ve expected it to involve the floozy the sheriff during the “look at my horrible teeth’ scene in the jail cell. Also you see how ‘Mama’ gets taken out by the worms when they fall out of the ceiling onto her as she sits in the livingroom, then a bit later we’re treated to seeing her worm eaten corpse still sitting in the chair.

There are so many deleted scenes in just about every movie MS3K did that I would on here all day..okay thats not entirely true but I think most were cut somewhere except for a few of the one hour wonders like Yucca Flats, Robot Monster, and few other old Season 1 movies
Godzilla vs Megalon I think wasnt cut
Some of the Corman and Mr BIG films were cut even just slightly..
Every Gamera film is missing something ( especially in Baragon where Baragon freezes Gamera, among others)
Jungle Goddess the scene at the end where Superman and Dick Tracy are fighting where just before the commercial they were sleeping.
    I also saw Manos uncut..unwatchable
Teenagers from Outer Space missing the opening prologue
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster was missing quite a bit as was Ator ( Cave Dwellers ) – we missed Ator’s fights at the end
Incredible Melting Man cut a lot also which is true for even the overseas release of it non MST3K
    Deathstalker was cut
Obviously Stranded in Space was SEVERELY cut since the movie runs over 2 hours to begin with..
Hercules was cut for the same reason – nearly 2 hours..
come to think of it every Hercules movie was cut
This Island Earth was also cut quite a bit..
Anyway this is off the top of my head

Warrior of the Lost World had more than just the Prossor death scene cut down. In the part just before Warrior slams into the side of the rocks, he’s actually been chased by more Omega soldiers. He even gets knocked off his bike during that scene for a brief moment. That explains more of the injuries you see getting healed with flashlights in the following scene.

You also get to see more of what Persis did to convince the Paper Chase Guy to help her. She pulled out her pistol, stuck it into his crotch, and said she’d “blow” his “f***ing d*** off.” I think she even calls him a “dumb m*****f******.” So there wasn’t much love lost when he decided to ditch her at Omega HQ.

Oh and there were zombies in the cave they go through. Not just spiders, snakes, and bats. At the time Italy was big into zombie movies and thus this movie too had to have zombies in it.

I’ve also seen Robot Holocaust and Final Justice uncut. Nothing to report other than nude scenes. In fact there is tons of nudity in Final Justice. You even get to unfortunately see Palermo’s butt in it when he rapes a girl in the shower. Thankfully no nudity involves Joe Don Baker. I can say this movie definitely has the most naked women in it of any movie MST3K ever riffed. At least in its unedited form.

In Robot Holocaust the marble mouthed evil girl gets topless and has some exotic dancers move around next to her in a weird scene the narrator explains as the “pleasure chamber” or something. The beginning of the scene is even in the MST3K version but cuts away before anything could be shown.

In The Movie (This Island Earth), I recall one scene that was cut with Exeter demonstrating the Interoceter by destroying something on the table.

In Squirm, there was also (IIRC) a scene where the ‘hero’ and the skinny sister share a “smoke”.

  23. “Young Man’s Fancy”, the short from episode 610, had a lot of stuff that was cut out for the commercial break. Most of it’s more plotting by the squishy Judy to get into Alexander Phipps’ pants. Sally, who’s credited at the end of the short but doesn’t appear in the cut version, also tries to help.

In fact, one of the scenes, involving Alexander boring her father about machinery, was used as footage for Yes’s concert film, “9012Live.” Alexander says, “Some of those large generators have the rhythm of music,” causing Judy to ask him to put a record on, which turns out to be a “square” classical piece. The father then mutters, “The rhythm of big generators…” and as a result, “Big Generator” became the title of Yes’s next album. So there you have it, an MST’d short was responsible for a rock band’s artistic choices.

The full version starts here: http://www.archive.org/details/YoungMan1952

“The Home Economics Story” (episode 317) is also much longer, with some stuff cut from the middle about playing sports, how “samey” each year was in college, and why chemistry courses are important in creating cream of tomato soup. There’s also a weird bit where the camera focuses on Kay’s blanket for fifteen seconds in silence. Some of this footage was also used for the aforementioned Yes live video.

@ 22. Yep. That’s why Cal abruptly unplugged the interocitor for seemingly no reason. That’s an edit I never understood.

Other missing scenes from This Island Earth include a long awkward car ride for Ruth and Cal (after she picked him up from the “airport”).

Ruth admitting she IS the girl Cal dated in school. She and Russel Johnson’s character tell Cal that Exeter is spying on them. The hilarity of this scene is Cal seems almost certain that the lead shield will block the interocitor from spying on them. This turns out to be completely untrue as THE VERY NEXT SHOT is Exetor and Brack spying on them on the interocitor! (“You may kiss the scientist.”) Nevertheless, Exeter still feels the need to destroy Cal’s lead shield anyway in another deleted scene.

In the MST’ed version Russell Johnson’s character is almost immediately blown up by the aliens as soon as he drives off, but in the uncut version they actually try about 15 times to blast him (this is why it looks like Johnson just immediately gives up in the MST’ed version)

Exeter arguing with his boss about what to do with Cal and Ruth, and that Earth will be taken over by Metalunans.

Scrotor the Bug climbing into a hatch (again, I have no clue why this was cut from the MST’ed version as it only lasts like 5 seconds).

Seems like every time I post here, I mention Indestructible Man, but here we go again… The scene in which sleazy underworld Lawyer Paul Lowe slugs the Sergeant is cut from the MST version. It kind of makes the scene when Lowe is released from custody and forgiven for slugging the Sergeant confusing. But then again, a movie about an electrocuted man being brought back to life with a charge of electricity is confusing on it’s own!

I must put in a good word for “The Agony Booth” for making me aware of the missing scenes in Mitchell, Space Mutiny, and other episodes. Some of the edits make sense in retrospect, others don’t.

Let me also note a different but not the less annoying kind of edited scene, the scene missing because MST3K used a “movie” that was actually two movies or a bunch of TV shows edited together. It’s funny for example when Crow yells, “What the Sam Scratch is going on??” during Fugitive Alien II but in a way it’s not the movie’s fault it makes no sense because it’s not really a movie. The same is undoubtedly true of some of Prince of Space‘s non sequiturs–more so because at least they acknowledged from time to time that Sandy Frank’s TV compilations were in fact TV compilations.

They cut some of the gore from “Horror of Party Beach”. The scene when the swimmer is killed on the rock near the beginning shows much more blood. The scene with the slumber party girls that are attacked is much more graphic.

Every once in a while for the “Even Deeper Blurting” site, I’d write articles about deleted scenes from MSTed movies. For example, BBI cut a major chunk from “Diabolik” featuring a second bit from Terry-Thomas and an explanation of the “people stopped paying taxes” line. Another one is the near-shipwreck cut from “Hercules”. And, of course, there’s the major sections cut from “This Island Earth” (though those scenes were riffed on for the live show at ConventioCon I).

At the Gateway 2000 convention, fans got to a chance to riff on the uncut version of “Mitchell”, including the John Saxon death scene. (As a couple of clever fans quipped, “Unsafe at any speed!”) We also got to riff on an alternate cut of “Riding with Death”, which had not so much cut footage but different shots from the MSTed version.

The most annoying cuts were those of Cave Dwellers. Remember the final sketch, in which Joel shows still frames from the last part of the movie and shows how they all have anachronistic oversights? Of the three stills that are shown, at least two — and maybe all three — of them had been cut from the episode. That decision is mystifying to me, especially as one of the stills (the guy with the sunglasses) looks so ridiculous. It wasn’t until I once rented the unMSTied version that I got to see that these scenes were in fact from the actual movie.

Also, in the episode, the show cuts to commercial just as Ator says “Thong, the fish is ready.” It’s not until the stinger that we get to see the nonsense that occurs after that. Given that stinger moments are otherwise always shown in full during the actual episode, that cut is mysterious indeed.

Fathermushroom #30 – you could very well be right. I also considered One Million Years BC, where there is again to people watching a dinosaur fight from a cave, though one imagines King would remember Raquel Welch. Uh…the tire tracks and the “modern city” are ridiculously apparent from the episode itself. The Foster-Grahams aren’t obvious but I suspect that a well-timed freeze frame of the episode would reveal those as well.

  39. Krepta says:

In “Santa Claus” (not the one with Martians, the “stupid Mexican kids’ movie”), there’s one large block of scenes cut out which deals with Santa Claus getting prepared for his ride. There’s a few scenes of Santa exercising so he can fit down chimneys, and then there’s the scene where he meets with Q to pick up his gadgets, so to speak. The MSTed movie is all the more disjointed, and perhaps more effective, for having lost these scenes, but in the original cut it’s laid out explicitly for us that Merlin and Hephaestus live in Santa’s castle too, and they’re the ones who give him the disappearing flower, the sleeping powder, the key that unlocks any door, etc.

There’s also a dream sequence involving Lupita and a bunch of huge dancing dolls. This is glossed over with a commercial break, but if you ever wondered why suddenly Lupita is being harangued by a doll in the movie, it’s because she wouldn’t dance with ‘stolen’ dolls.

I thought the Mitchell John Saxon death scene was pretty funny, until the slamming of his head in the car door part.

In Space Mutiny, they cut short the scene where the Chief Engineer gets roasted. The full scene goes on a few more seconds and shows him engulfed in flames walking around normally. That would’ve been a good opportunity for a “I’m cured” riff.

At the risk of sounding icky, here are a few more “breast” scenes.

There is a scene cut from “Werewolf” of Paul and Natalie in bed. If I may say so, her breasts ARE something to write home about.

In “Devilfish”, Peter and Sandra are seen in bed together, which we DO see in the MST3K version, but they have it zoomed in to we don’t see anything.

I believe there is a scene in “Space Mutiny” that they shortened so you don’t see any more of Leigh, although that might be a good thing.

In “Manos”, we see Torgo take off his pants… kidding.

Does anyone know if SPACE MUTINY was cut? (well – besides the obvious sexual scenes with Big McLargeHuge & his Grandma-lover). Before one of the sketch-breaks, McPhearson – the Calgon look-alike in white – kills a member of the ‘high counsel’ with his walking stick, then pulls aside a young guy and says, “you have done well”.

M brother and I always laugh at this because it obviously makes no sense to the rest of the story (what there was of it) – something had to have been cut out, so it makes me wonder what that was.

I doubt any sub-plot would have helped – plus the Bellairian sub-plot is just too good to top.

I can honestly say that I have never seen a MST movie un-riffed. That just seems too. . .painful. I even own Volume One DVD and it’s got un-riffed versions of those 4 movies, but why would I ever watch Skydivers or Bloodlust without Mike and the Bots? It is real interesting to hear about all these cut scenes, though, so thanks guys (and gals) for doing the research for me. I have a particular fondness for 70’s cinema, so I might have to track down Mitchell; I LOVE me some John Saxon, and a JS death scene I might just have to see. A friend of mine has a copy of Squirm (he was surprised to find out that MST riffed on it; he kinda dug it) and I think I might watch that sometime.

Operation Double 007 has quite a lot cut out. The first host segment cuts into a scene where Thair, Mildred and Commander Cunningham is at an auction. Cunningham talks with Thair about the airplane crash earlyer. Thair tries to get a Perseus statue, but at the last moment Alpha outbids him. That statue later appears in the THANATOS conference room, and Thair looks at it, that is why there is an odd pause between the lines. Also the first THANATOS meeting is cut. We see it until Alpha says something about conquering the world or whatever. Than, he turns over to a guy, who is called Gamma, if I remember correctly, and tells him, that since he failed to get Yachuco, he must shoot himself and gives him a gun. Gamma tries to shoot Alpha, but the gun is empty. He than drinks the water, but it’s poisoned and he drops dead. Alpha than gives Thair the job to get Yachuco. They also talk about Connery and further establish that indeed he is the brother of James Bond. Immediately after this come an archery competition where Connery beats Thair. They have some talk, than Thair gives Maya the orders to get close to Connery. Cunningham shows up and we join the movie here. Later also cut is a part, where Connery deduces that Thair has some operation in Tetuan, Morrocco so he goes there. To caped thugs try to kill him but Maya shoots one of them and they escape. Maya invites Connery to Thair’s party, which we see in our version. Also, in the party scene, Thair mentions their first meeting, which was cut. Last, but not least, we get a final THANATOS meeting. Alpha tries to kill Thair the same way as he killed Gamma. Thair drinks the water and fakes death. The Perseus statue (remember that?) turns and ejects the sword which impales Alpha. Thair stands up and says that he took the antidote for the poison. After that Connery and Maya arrives to the german airport, where they meet up with Connery’s archery team, who will appear in the finale fight.

I actually had my TV running the MST3K version of “This Island Earth” and the uncut version on my laptop on the table. I was actually quite surprised at how much was cut.

    – Cal takes the alien beed to see if it can hold the voltage Joe claimed it did. Cutting this scene makes sense because what Cal does is redundant since he already told us what it is.
    – Probably the most obvious cut scenes are of the Exeter using the Iterociter to destroy the book on the table and a metal piece hanging from the wall. Deleting these scenes makes no sense since one of the host segments plays heavily on the iterociter using it’s laser beams. They even used the same sound effect from the movie!
    – Somes scenes with Exeter on Earth contacting the Monitor and their progress. Pretty much just filler.
    – In the MST3K version, Ruth tries to deny her identity to Cal when he lands, but for some odd reason he is talking to her like she is the Ruth she knows and she is no longer denying it. Well, one of the deleted scenes has a sequence where she does in fact tell him that she really is the Ruth he knew.
    – After Cal and Ruth jump into the lake when the car explodes, they see the German speaking scientist out on a walk. They try calling for him, but when he notices them in the lake, he’s instantly zapped. That’s why Cal brings his name up directly in front of Exeter when they’re captured.
    – You get to see Exeter’s space ship take off from behind the mountain.
    – The sequence where Cal and Ruth are being pulled into Exeter’s ship is heavily cut. Good thing to because that sequence took forever in the original version.
    – Exeter’s ship is actually attacked by two Zagon ships. You can actually make them out in the mst3k version where you see two glowing objects that seem to have fire falling from them. Those are the meteors they’re carrying behind them. For a war that the Metalunas are not winning, Exeter’s ship takes them out with incredible ease.
    – This one is interesting because it totally changed my perspective of Metaluna. I always thought that was the surface of the planet we were watching when the ship lands. Well, it turns out there is a sequence after the ship enters the atmosphere where we see them fly over a lifeless surface of the planet. It’s not until you see holes leading to a series of underground caves that their cities are located.
    – After exiting the ship, the drive to the Monitor’s room showcases a very early use of the green screen effect. Exeter points in various directions showing where the schools and recreation areas once were. It’s kind of hard to take seriously when all the actors have this very thick green borders surrounding them.
    – A very cheesy exchange between the monitor and Cal where the monitor says the typical “you think you’re superior, we are superior!” and Cal’s only come back is “We’re superior because we have God!”.
    – More footage of Zagon ships bombarding the surface of Metaluna. After Cal and Ruth escape from the Mutant for the first time, we cut back to the Monitor’s control room to find it in shambles and him lying on the floor dead. Toilet Hogger is dead!
    – Footage of the Mutant getting up and walking into Exeter’s spaceship before it lifts off.

Also to #17. The scene you mentions, where two characters hide in a cave while to dinosaurs (well, really to lizards) fight was in King Dinosur, not The Lost Continent, although there were dinos in The Lost Continent. The character call the lizard in King Dinosaur a t-rex (as a matter of fact, it is the title character), but Bert I. Gordon obviously couldn’t make it, she he just took a lizard.
