Pick your top three host segments of season two, and give us a little explanation as to why.
Mine, in no particular order, are:
From episode 204- CATALINA CAPER: Joel vapor-locks as he remembers the ’60s.
I think it helps to be a certain age to appreciate this one. I’m almost the same age as Joel (a couple of years older) and this is a very funny take on that time period.
From episode 210- KING DINOSAUR: Crow asks “Am I qualified?” Wonderful wonderful writing a Trace just knocks it out of the park.
From episode 213- GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER: Song: “The Godzilla Genealogy Bop.” There are a lot of songs in season two, but this one is my favorite.
Honorable mention:
From episode 212- GODZILLA VS. MEGALON: Dysfunctional popcorn commercial. This isn’t as funny as it used to be, as the Reddenbacher family have faded from view, but it makes up for that by being incredibly prescient.
Oh and, a new feature: WORST host segment:
From episode 203- JUNGLE GODDESS: The “Bela’s OK Discoveries” infomercial. Infomercials were new then, but had already been parodied to death and there’s really nothing new in this. A total flop.
Those are mine. What are yours?
joey the lemur.
king dinosaur was the first episode i ever saw, and this skit is my favorite. maybe some of it is nostalgic…but i love this skit.

I loved the JC and Gooch segment from Sidehackers, but nothing gets even close to Joel going crazy and building the Taj Mahal in 213.
Least favorite? Hmm… I’ve watched season 2 so much that I’m pretty much sick of all the episodes, but if I had to pick one I’d go with the Scopes, which I never really thought was funny in the first place, and with it getting re-run 5 episodes later, makes it even less amusing.

The Old School for Old Students in 206 Ring of Terror – gets me every time! Second choice would be Joel’s 60’s rant (“No, Joel, you can’t go to Woodstock…you’re only nine!”) from 204 Catalina Caper. Third would be the Wild Rebel cereal song from 207.
Can’t name a worst; some worked for me, some didn’t, but it’s so subjective.

It’s a toss up between the Creepy Girl song that servo sings and the Wild Rebel’s cereal commerical.

1. Only Love Pads the Film from Sidehackers.
2. Nuclear Quiz Show from Rocket Attack USA
3. Joel’s Russian Counterpart from Rocket Attack USA.
I’ve only seen Sidehackers and Rocket Attack USA so far.

They had a lot of highly literate host segments in this season, so it’s kind of hard to choose.
Nonetheless:
The Sidehacking Song (202) “it won’t last long. The folks who made it up are laid at Forest Lawn.”
Joel’s 60’s Soliloquy (204) “Oh, nooo, Joel, YOU can’t go to Woodstock, you’re only nine years old!”
Wild Rebels Cereal (207) “So pound ’em down, you stupid clown! They’re wiiiiiild!”
For worst, maybe Frank’s Tupperware Party (204), which is hugely obvious and goes nowhere. At least some other candidates (e.g., The Emotional Scientist (210)) have a bit of a WTF? factor.

Favorite Season Two host segments:
1) Funny or not funny floating from Rocketship X-M: Great dialogue, hilarious from beginning to end. Whenever Joel tries to teach his ‘bots/kids a lesson, it’s always a winner.
2) Creepy Girl from Catalina Caper: Kevin Murphy’s delivery of the hilarious lyrics, coupled with the humorous puppeteering and interjections from Joel and Crow equal one of the funniest segments ever.
3) Wild Rebels Cereal from Wild Rebels: Great lyrics, hilarious premise, great ensemble comedy from Joel and the ‘Bots. Great timing and delivery throughout. Love it!
Many other greats from Season Two, too many to mention. Still my favorite season overall of the show.

The “Hired” song from Bride of the Monster is brilliant. The Godilla flick with the bit that ends with “Karl Malden’s nose” is cool. And as many have touched on, the Wild Rebels song is great as is the 60’s rant (Toys were small and fit into children’s mouths) but Hired (We’re gonna get awnings!) tops the group.

1. The Charlie McCarthy Era from “Rocket Attack U.S.A.” Priceless. “That started the whole ‘Free Art Clokey’ Movement.”
2. Also from “Rocket Attack U.S.A.”, Joel & The ‘Bots summarize the plot. “Cut to New York, where Art Metrano and Harry Connick eat pizza and buy ties for their stupid girlfriends!”
3. Similarly, the plot summary from Catalina Caper. “If anything, that was the emotional TOOTSIE CENTER of the film!”
The McCarthy sketch is still probably my favorite segment ever. I love the cross-polination of the puppets into the real “showbiz” milieu. It’s very clever referential satire.
I loved the summaries, and I’ve always wished they’d done more in later years.
I don’t really have a “Worst” – though I’d probably pick the “Cool Thing” segment. It’s not a terribly fair pick, since my enjoyment of it was seriously lessened by the revelation later of what was. (Sure, it was supposed to be funny, but I didn’t laugh. Plus, I didn’t think it was internally consistent with their descriptions in the sketch. I think I really need to relax now.) If not that, then probably “Joey The Lemur” -eh.

Maybe you’ve missed it, but they have exhumed Orville Reddenbacher for brand new commercials, so the Dysfunctional popcorn skit is still somewhat topical.

1. Catalina Caper, segment 2. Joel’s monologue about the 60s is classic.
2. King Dinosaur, segment 3. Joey the Lemur!
3. Godzilla vs Megalon, segment 5. The Jet Jaguar song always cracks me up.
Worst segment? MST doesn’t do anything that’s not funny to me.

yeah, im trapped up in outer space. Sometimes my life feels like whole pile of nothing. So what. word. live with it. dig it. anyway, me and my bloods would like to whip out a song about our friends, the sidehackers, goes like this…
0 likes
1. The whole end of Godzilla vs. Megalon from the “cool new arms” to Frank complaining about his Mario being killed by a Goomba “He’s dead I tell ya! Dead!”
2. Wild Rebels Cereal Song.
3. Tie: The two songs from “Sidehackers”, “Sidehackin'” and “Only Love Pads the Film.”
Like Sampo, Honorable mention goes to the Orville Popcorn sketch…I was really young, but I remember those commercials. And, yeah that sketch was really prophetic.
As you can probably tell, my repetoir from season two and earlier is pretty limited…but I’d say the least funny to me is probably any one of the host segments for “Jungle Goddess.” That episode as a whole just didn’t seem that good to me.

2 favorites are in
Wild Rebels when Joel sings to Gypsy “And I know what I like about you.”
and in Ring of Terror when they talk about “The OLD school.”
Least faves? There were lots of lackluster host segment, IMO from season 6 but none I can specifically name.

How was the Reddenbacher skit “incredibly prescient”? Did young Reddenbacher not enjoy a bright future? Anyways, one of my fave skits which I saw for the first time just 4 years ago. I loved it because I’ll never forget the grandpa ‘n grandson Reddenbacher eating popcorn during the “NBC monday night movie” when I was but 8 or 9 years old. Also, anyone have a visual link which would explain Tom and Crow exasperating Joel with “The ABC mystery movie!” every time they saw some moving lights? :p

Favorites:
201: Rocketship X-M – Segment 2, giving all the no-name reporters in the background goofy names.
202: The Sidehackers – Segment 3, play-by-play for Sidehacking; Segment 4, J.C. and Gooch
204: Catalina Caper – Segment 2, Joel’s weird Sixties soliloquy
205: Rocket Attack USA – Segment 2, Charlie McCarthy Hearings
208: The Lost Continent – Segment 2, Hugh Beaumont as one of the Four Horsemen
212: Godzilla VS Megalon – Segment 2,The ‘bots argue over their monsters’ powers to distract Joel from their naughty pictures; Segment 5, the Jet Jaguar song
213: Godzilla VS the Sea Monster – Segment 3, Joel’s “round object” buildings
Least? All of 209: The Hellcats – Sad invention, flashbacks, etc.

“My White Goddess” from Jungle Goddess

Hmmm…
The Orville Popcorn sketch always gets a laugh from me (“I’m the god!! I’m the god!!”).
I’d also go with the Klack Foods bit from “First Spaceship on Venus”, especially for Joel’s expressions and the odd text of Tom’s narration.
One bit that’s special for me was Mike as Valeria in “Rocketship X-M”, because for years I had no idea what it meant. Then, at ConventioCon I, I finally saw “Robot Holocaust”. I felt like standing up and shouting, “NOW I get the joke!”
Worst one: Gotta go with Joey the Lemur. It goes on way too long and still goes nowhere (though I liked the callback it gets in “Last of the Wild Horses”).

Definitely the Wild Rebels Cereal song… it’s priceless!
“..like getting hit in the back of the head with a surfboard of flavor!”
“Kids? What are you doing in there?!?
Having a good breakfast, Mom!”

I’ve only seen the Season 2 eps released by Rhino. This was early enough in the show that I just liked any sketch that felt like a mess which turned into a happy accident. Therefore, my favs are:
1.) End of Godzilla vs. Megalon: The Jet Jaguar song would have cinched this as my favorite anyway (being an anime fan makes me a sucker for inappropriate subtitle gags), but there’s just so much going on besides. Joel sparking the flamethrower-arm is awesome because his reaction indicates a much bigger flame than he expected, meaning it accidentally looked better than they hoped, but no one got hurt (I’m assuming).
2.) Wild Rebels Cereal: As mentioned in TACEG, an unrevised mess that worked anyway. Watching it almost a decade after first reading the guide, it did not disappoint.
3.) Catalina Caper ’60s flashback: Y’know, my parents once made me take a bath in a tub in the front yard of my grandparents’ house as well! Is that some sort of ingrained cultural instinct? Joel’s overall description compliments my third-hand understanding of the ’60s gleamed from classic rock, Godard’s “Weekend”, and all the MSTed movies of the “oily period”.
Least fav? Well, I’m still on the fence about the ending of the diary/flashback arc in Hellcats. It was a good sendup of cheap sitcom clip shows, and I got to see some previous sketches from still unreleased eps, but something just didn’t click when they all ran into Gypsy. Ah well.

I’m sorry, but I have to go way out of bounds and stick with the final host segment from episode 803…but only because the beefy servile mute well-oiled hunk shares the same name as me

Creepy Girl, from Catalina Caper (this and “List of People Much Better Looking than Estelle” were the first MST3K songs I learned)
also from Catalina Caper, Joel’s rant about the 60s.
Best line? “Why, my dad actually made me go get the belt!”
Anything from Sidehackers qualifies in the “worst” segment category. Bad Frank, bad.

In no particular order, my favorites are Wild Rebels Cereal, Mr. Hoover’s Autopsy from Ring of Terror, Crow’s “Am I Qualified?” speech, and “Rex Dart, Eskimo Spy!”.
Least favorite are pretty much all of them from Hellcats. Not a big fan of flashback episodes.

I have always been fond of the segment in 207 where Joel sings a song to Gypsy and then Crow and Tom beat him up. Only because what Gypsy says at the end…
“I’m in it for the kicks.”
For some reason that always makes me laugh.

My word, I must say looking at these lists that season 2 was excellent for host segments. I don’t think they ever got much better than these. Host segments like the 60s rant were what made me a lifelong fan.

The songs from Sidehackers, Catalina Caper, and Godzilla vs Megalon are great. Though the monster argument from G vs M is my single favorite host segment from season two.

Even though it’s not a “true” host segment, I love Frank’s entry as the food clerk from Rocketship X-M, when he describes the Thruster Buster, and J&TB order Splunkees.

Favorite: What would YOU do with a two-hour stop over in Chicago? “Since it would be TUESDAY, admission is free at the Art Institute!” How many people across the US erupted with laughter at that one besides us Chicago(area)ans? And check out Gypsy’s Cubs Hat…
2nd (tie): “When I Held Your Brains in My Arms” a great tune that stands up to anything the Ink Spots ever recorded. And the rhyme “I used to love alotta’ your Medulla Oblongata” is one for the ages. Also “It caused a contusion… during Suddenly Susan”
“When Loving Lovers Love.” When Brain Guy walks out to a tepid PBS smattering of applause and coyly sets his brain down to join Pearl in the duet is hilarious.
Runner up: The “Gift of the Magi” bit where a Bald TV’s Frank gifts Dr. F with a watch fob.
Dr F. “You sold your hair and bought me a watch fob!!”
Frank (in total seriousness) “Sold my hair?? No…”

It’s “When I Held Your Brain (singular) in My Arms”

Amazing Collosal man. Host segment 2. Joel climbs into a huge dollhouse as if he were the Amazing Collosal man. Joel says, “Ugh!! I’m huge!” The bots make fun of him and Joel finally gives up trying to make them more ‘human’
Giant Gila Monster Host segment 2. Soda/malt shop in any closet by removing most dangerous chemicals. The bots keep calling Joel who explains he’s the soda jerk, stupid jerk,.. etc.
Crack up everytime.

It’s hard to decide on the best host segments– Tom’s Canada song, “Who do you want in your Werewolf Movie,” and Mike as a tepanyaki chef all come to mind as some of the best.
The worst host segment, however, is unquestioned in my mind: Supercalafragalisticexpialawacky. I don’t know what inspired it, but I really, really can’t stand it. What’s really weird is that it’s the only thing I’ve disliked about the show. Just that one thing.
Oh yeah, and that weird montage thing they did in Sci-Fi years was great. “The sauce! It’s too rich!”

I think the first host segment of the whole season is my personal favorite, when Joel & the Bots first meet Frank. Conniff’s deadpan delivery was dead-on, especially with the milk carton: “As for Dr. Erhardt, he’s missing.” And then Joel & the Bots almost get back down to Earth because they want to “eat in”–priceless!
Of course, I only saw 201 and 202 from this season, so who am I to say…

Favorite **SEASON TWO** host segments:
Too many great segments to choose from!
1) 211- KLACK (a great sketch from an under-rated episode )
2) 203- the Scopes/”Gobos” sketch
3) tie- 207) Intellectual Bikers & 205) Charlie McCarthy Hearings
worst- Frank’s tupperware party in 204 is pretty dull, although partially saved by Dr. F scooping out Frank’s eyue with a melon baller

First of all, thank you Rowsdower42 for pointing out what’s been frustrating me about reading this link: people, the topic is SEASON 2 HOST SEGMENTS!!! Not seasons 3-10 host segments, nor invention exchanges or comments made in the theater. If you aren’t familair with the season 2 episodes and they’re content, DON’T COMMENT!
Having said that, here are my favorites, in no particular order, from season 2:
206-Ring of Terror-Segments 2 & 3: The Old School and Hoover operation skits were always funny to me.
212-Godzilla Vs. Megalon-Segment 4: The Orville Redenbacher and grandson sketch is a work of genius.
Honorable mention: songs from season two: “Creepy Girl”, “Wild Rebels Cereal”, “Godzilla Genealogy Bop”.
Worst: 204-Catalina Caper-Segment 4: The Tupper-ware party thrown by Frank is an rare example of MST padding an episode; it goes absolutely nowhere.
Btw, anyone not sure what episodes are in season 2, there’s an episode guide within this very website, along with a one-sentence synopsis of each host segment. There’s no reason to not know which shows are being discussed. Sorry to be a pain, but it’s really becoming annoying reading stuff that doesn’t pertain to what’s being talked about.

Most favorite: “Only Love Pads the Film” from “The Sidehackers.” Of all the music segments from the Satellite of Love, this is the one I actually find myself singing to myself. Unfortunately, I find myself humming that awful tune from “The Creeping Terror.”
Second: “Rex Dart: Eskimo Spy.” I think it’s really funny how most of the segment is made up of action footage, and then it includes the weird, comic-relief shot of “Rex” looking up into the security camera.
Third: The “Wild Rebels” cereal commercial. It’s just darned funny.
Honorable mention: Joel’s 60s explanation. I wish people still smoked openly on late-night shows.
Worst: Frank’s Tupperware party sketch from “Catalina Caper.”

When I am laughing so hard that tears roll down my face that tells me that what I am watching is downright hysterical and jet jaguar did that for me! I can officially say jet jaguar now that we are discussing season two, I jumped the gun before.

ROCKET ATTACK USA’s McCarthy Hearings and the Nuclear Quiz Show – intelligent, funny, and with a little something to say (“Who pulls your strings?”/”Nuclear war myth number two: ‘Survivors are the lucky ones'”).
Also Joel’s explanation of the 60s.
And the Reddenbacher parody (often quoted – by many – at work).

Hmm….forgot about the Hoover autopsy skit. That was pretty hilarious, especially when Gypsy faints.

I guess these are my favorite three, after much though (note that I haven’t seen many of the season two episodes):
1) The “Jet Jagaar” theme song from Godzilla vs. Megalon. Can’t say much else about it. It’s just great.
2) “Wild Rebels Cereal” from Wild Rebels. I can’t remember much else about the episode, but man the song was hilarious
3) Joel’s vapor-lock from Catalina Caper. I had a hard time choosing for this one, but in the end I just love this rant, even though I’m certainly not old enough to have experienced the 60s.
Honorable Mentions include:
1) “Only Love Pads the Film” from Sidehackers. “Sidehackin'” is kind of funny too but I enjoy the Poopie Reel version a lot more.
2) “Creepy Girl” from Catalina Caper
3) The dysfunctional popcorn ad from Godzilla vs. Megalon
4) Rex Dart: Eskimo Spy from Godzilla vs. Megalon
5) The bots’ monster argument in Godzilla vs. Megalon. Honestly, I’d say that Godzilla vs. Megalon had most of the best host segments of Season 2 in it.
The worst host segment is probably Frank’s Tupperware party from Catalina Caper. It’s one of those few segments that I can say is just not funny.

I like the Creepy Girl Song from Catalina Caper. I also like any segment that features Mike, with the possible exception of the one from Rocketship X-M in which he inexplicably appears as Valeria from Robot Holocaust. But even that one was funny in a “WTF?” kind of way.

The one that comes to mind first is the autopsy sketch from “Ring Of Terror” when the crew dismantle a Hoover. Awesome!!!!
“Joey the Lemur” will always have a special place in my heart because it was a TOTALLY improved skit that was horribly hilarious.

The skull saying “I live to serve you” does it for me. Also, it’s Mike, so I can’t hate on the Valeria sketch.

I’ve only seen a few, but I have to agree with the others about “Rex Dart- Eskimo Spy” and the Wild Rebels cereal song.
The worst segment from what I’ve seen is the Wild Rebels bit where Joel talks about the role of bikers throughout history. Perhaps I’m not old enough, but I didn’t laugh once at that bit.

I haven’t seen too many of these yet, but I do have a couple, I do like the Sidehackers song and the crew announcing the race with new phrases, as well as the Wild Rebels Cereal.

Because “Sidehackers” (202) was my favorite from season two, it should my top two favorites come from that episode.
Firstly is the song sung at the end by Joel “Only Love Pads the Film”. It’s great on so many levels I’m at a loss to illustrate them all, from touching in its sweetness to hysterical in just how true it is of all movies.
My second season two segment is the song “Sidehackin”. Just love that one for no particular reason other than it being funny as hell.
My third S2 pick comes from “Rocketship X-M” (201) where Joel gives the bots the Zero Gravity Humor Lesson. It’s more subtle in its humor, but for some reason it make me laugh. Couldn’t tell you why.

growing up in the newly hydrogenated-fat saturated 60’s, the ‘Klack’ segment in ‘First Spaceship on Venus’ always brings back memories of the velvety-voiced, IN COLOR! foodscape TV commercials of that era. somehow, all of the TV brand’s ‘recipes’ seemed to involve [‘folding in’] Miracle Whip. this product was not on my mother’s grocery list, so I tasted it for the first time at the home of a friend. ‘why, it’s just bland, kinda sweet mayonnaise,’ I remember thinking. another childhood dream shattered…the TV commercials made it seem like some wonderful substance that would save the palates of the masses, and perhaps the world itself. nope! for some reason, the ‘Velvety Choad Balls’ make me giggle hardest. the bots wear post-war USA comforting kiddie costumes [cowboy, etc.] and exude Klack-induced glee, like the bright eyed tots of the TV commercials, about to ingest all the creamy goodness that America could conjure. Servo’s soothing babble-commentary to the tune of Mike Nelson’s cheerful background music is spot on! I also love Joel’s exaggerated yummy face as he gazes at the hideous [and cream-layered] meat parfait. a great bit in a great episode- thanks, SOL crew! [don’t forget those jimmy hats for safe snacking.]
