Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Favorite Rhino Extra

Alert reader Clint pointed us to this story about a pretty severe layoff at Rhino. It’s unclear what this means for continued distribution of Rhino’s MST3K box sets, but seemed like enough of a peg to hang this question on: What’s your favorite extra on a Rhino MST3K DVD?

My pick: The “extra footage” on the Vol. 3 disks with outtakes and unused takes. It’s fascinating to watch that backstage stuff.
What’s yours?

Mine would have to be the instructions of how to properly insert your new “Giant Gila Monster” DVD into the Volume 10 box set while also properly disposing of MWAHHH WAHHH WAHHH VS. MEHHHH WAHHHHH WAHHHH.

If you can count it I always enjoyed the packaging the Rhino box sets came in. They all had a uniformed look but the style for every set was unique and attractive. I prefered the gatefold layout oposed to the new single disc style cases.

The episode intros Mike did for box sets 3 & 4.

Also the very decent interview with Mike & Kevin in the 4th box set.

Cant afford them. Mine are VHS or legal downloads. The original concept of “Keep Sharing the Tapes!” seems to be lost on the folks at Rhino.

Ditto on the “the very decent interview with Mike & Kevin in the 4th box set.”

I think part of the problem with Rhino’s sales after reading that article is Shout Factory. Shout has not only taken over MST3K, they release a lot of other stuff Rhino used to handle that I bought over the last year. Music reissues of LPs were the first Rhino purchases I made more than 20 years ago, then CDs and later DVDs. Now I find myself buying CDs and DVDs (e.g., Secret Policman’s Balls, MST3K, 60s music reissues, 2000 Year Old Man Complete History”) from Shout.

I quite enjoyed the interview with parts: the clonus horror director Robert Fiveson on Volume 12. That almost made up for him not mentioning MST3K at all on the Clonus disc that Mondo Macabro put out a couple years earlier. I also dug the sly digs as Michael Bay.

The three bonus shorts (“Assignment: Venezuela,” “Century 21 Calling…” and “A Case of Spring Fever”) on Volume 7 were also most welcome.

In terms of extras the Rhino releases were nothing to get excited about. Shout! Factory does a much better job. One extra I did like from Rhino was the practice in some early releases (e.g., Eegah) of including the original unriffed movie. Otherwise, nothing to scream about.

I was glad Rhino took some of the material released by BBI years earlier and added it to DVDs as extra features. The “Poopie” reel is great, as are additional “shorts” and the like.

I like the video jukebox as well. I love being able to jump right to “The Greatest Frank of All.”
And while I do like the pulp-style cover art from Shout! Factory, I miss how the later disks from Rhino had pictures on them that represented the theme of the movie. Birth control pills for The Sinister Urge: pure genius.

Please define it as you understand the concept.

[Tip: It was “Keep Circulating The Tapes”]

Sure, it has nothing to do with the topic, but I’m honestly curious.

Anyway … the topic. The topic.

My favorite was the “outtakes” of the various host segments on Volume 3.

It was an excellent peek into their process, particularly with the outtakes on “Sidehackers.”

I liked the “Tormented” reunion. It was great to see Bert I. Gordon; and little Susan Gordon all grown up.

MISSION: VENEZUELA without a doubt! One of my very favorite short subjects ever tackled on MST3K. I watch it far more often than The Killer Shrews!

  16. Definitely “Assignment: Venezuela”. I hadn’t even seen it before Rhino released it as an extra and it quickly became one of my favorite MST3k riffs (out of both the shorts AND the movies).

I’m also a fan of having the un-riffed films.

I may be alone on this, but I also used to get a little kick out of Rhino’s self-promo that came on the VHS tapes. “Oh, sweet Rhino! Oh, virtuous Rhino!”

I also like the tongue-in-cheek FBI warnings with J. Edgar Hoover.

I also liked the Mike intros, although I thought he was unnecssarily cruel to the Time Chasers filmers in his comments. But then, I actually like the movie in itself.

    A 3-way tie:

-The bonus shorts on Vol. 7

-The un-MST’d movie versions on the early Rhino releases

big layoff at rhino? suddenly, i’m pretty happy i have all the box sets from them. if they go under, i wonder if shout can pick up their MST3K licenses :P

i especially liked the Tormented reunion and Fiveson’s interview as mentioned. I also rather liked Don Sullivan’s interview on 10.2, he had some interesting insights to share.

I can’t honestly say I’ve watched too many of the extras on the Rhino sets. I think my favorites are the MST Hour Wraps with Mike Nelson as “Your Host.” His Jack Perkins is so delightful.

  28. John Seavey says:

Gotta be the Poopie reel. I watch that every single time I put in “Manos”, and it keeps being funny every single time I watch it. Crow bursting into flames, “really makes ya wonder what the next line is,” “oops! Got the whole pig!”…it’s comedy gold.

Other than that, I’d say the interview with Mike and Kevin in Volume Five (“We can’t have ‘story arcs’, we’re a ‘puppet show'”) and the replacement instructions in Volume 10.2 (just nice to see everyone back in costume and in-character again.) And I like the Video Jukeboxes, because it’s a nice way to see some bits that probably won’t hit DVD any other way. (Well, any other way legally.)

I loved the Mike intros on Volumes 4 & 5 (sorry, guys; three had Sidehackers, Shorts Vol. 1, The Atomic Brain, and The Unearthly).

I think Fiveson’s interview on Clonus was great, and I did enjoy the poopie reels.

But my favorite little aside is the trailer for The Touch of Satan. It gives us a peek into what the heck the producers were thinking.

And yes, the packaging was superior.

    1. Assignment Venezuela.
    2. Being able to hit the “Crow button” and see the deleted scenes from Eegah!

  32. ck says:

Oopsy. In #23 above I meant Jack perkins, not Bert I. Gordon. Sorry.

And the Crow Button is a good idea, but rather confusing (for me) when actually tried. But I’d like to see that or unmystied movies also done like in some Rhino sets.

The uncut movies, especially Catalina Caper and Skydivers, which are hard to find. Eegah and Brain that Wouldn’t Die on the other hand are on every single dollar dvd of a bunch of old public domain horror movies. I would have loved to have Pod People uncut, so that’s kind of a disappointment.

Has to be the poopie reel….Is Shout! going to have the testis to include the Tom Servo [Josh] and the blender outtake in the future? You know the one where Josh drops the F bomb.

  38. Iggy Pop's Brother Steve Pop says:

I can’t really pick out a specific favorite. I’m glad that Rhino gave us some things free as extras that they could have put on a separate disc in place of a movie (e.g., the Video Jukeboxes instead of BBI-style “Play MSTie for Me” collections). But it’s too apples-and-oranges to say I liked that more than the branching “Crow button” feature on the Eegah! disc (even though there were some mistakes in the execution of it) or the behind-the-scenes footage.

I was going to say my least favorite are the Mike intros (which I feel showed him at his most unattractively snide), but then I remembered I’ve never even bothered to watch most of the extras with the filmmakers.

I can watch the Poopie reel that came with the Manos/Santa Claus Conquers the Martians set forever.

Are there any other blooper reels out there?

Simply word play, changed circulating to sharing. I can not say for sure but I got the idea that the slogan “Keep Circulating The Tapes” meant the originators of this phrase meant that their work should be recorded and shared with all sans commercialism.

  41. Re “Keep circulating the tapes”:

If you were there at the time, you know that the show wasn’t seen on very many cable systems, and a word-of-mouth campaign was needed to make the show more popular, and to let everyone see it who wanted to.
This philosophy doesn’t apply to Rhino or Shout! releases – they’re accessible to everyone.

For favorite extra, I don’t see how anyone can choose anything other than the Giant Gila Monster replacement instructions – the first new material in character in years. I’m assuming the people picking other things haven’t seen it.

“Assignment: Venezuela” was available from this website for years, so it shouldn’t be new to anyone.

I think that’s enough preaching for one day, don’t you?

…DURN IT! I knew it sounded wrong when I typed it. MISSION: VENEZUELA, what was I thinking!!! Of course it was ASSIGNMENT: VENEZUELA!!! Thank God I didn’t mention to Sampo how narrow I think the discussion topic is. Uh, did I say narrow? I meant wide, er, I mean, I’m not judging the width or breadth of the topic or anything…

  44. I kinda like the intros for Women of the Prehistoric Planet and Sinister Urge done by Irene Tsu and Conrad Brooks (even though Tsu spoils the big “twist” at the end).

  45. If this counts, I loved the menus. They were hilarious! I also liked the 2nd poopie reel, especially the part with Crow’s “booger”. In fact, just about all the features on 10.2 were great. Maybe Rhino was trying to make up for letting the Godzilla movie go out of print. One thing I hated about Rhino was how they used the same Don Sullivan interview for “Giant Gila Monster” and “The Rebel Set.”

I loved the Giant Gila Monster instructional segment. Gave us back the guys, if only for a short while. Two things:

    1) Is it true that Josh didn’t voice Servo for that thing, and if so, anyone know why?

    2) Seriously guys, with the circulating the tapes debate? OMG JOEL IZ BETTER!1!!

  50. I would have gone with the video jukeboxes, but I think all that footage is available on my Best Brain “Triple Decker” DVD, which is much more convenient.

So my vote goes to “Assignment: Venezuela”, simply because it was the only thing I didn’t have already, either from tape trading or legitimate release.

“Is it true that Josh didn’t voice Servo for that thing, and if so, anyone know why?”

Yes, it’s true. Frank voiced Servo. As for why, I think because it was shot before CT began and was intended as a “proof of concept” for new MST3K, which would probably not have included Josh.
