Weekend Discussion Thread: Episodes That Cheer You Up

You’ve had a crappy day. Your boss was a dink, your project was a failure, things didn’t go how you planned, something disappointing or even downright bad happened.
Now you’re back home. You need cheering up. And you’re a MSTie, so you know what you need.
I hear from MSTies all the time that MST3K is often the perfect thing to pick them up when they’re down.
Works for me, too. My favorite pick-me-up ep is 601- GIRLS TOWN. I never get tired of it. Great riffing, wacky movie. I always feel better when it’s over.
What episode do you pick when you need cheering up?

My “Mitchell”–I think I’ll keep him!

Hhmmmm… Usually, I guess it’s whichever episodes are my current favorites. Right now, I’d have to say The Dead Talk Back, Bloodlust, Zombie Nightmare or Outlaw. If I had to pick one, probably Outlaw; that one never gets old. The lame-ness of the movie itself, plus the way M&TB are almost giddy about watching it and riffing, is a great combination. Add in “Tubular Boobular Joy”, and this episode has the mood-lifting power equivalant to a roomful of playful puppies.

Either “I Accuse My Parents” (the scenes with Al the Fry Cook are hilarious) or “The Rebel Set” (especially the scene with Father Edward Platt being chased by the big guy who runs like Bernie Carbo). “Incredibly Strange Creatues…” etc., etc. also cheers me up.

I have 4 that are pretty much on equal standing: Time Chasers, Space Mutiny, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, and Mitchell. They aways brighten my day. When I was in 8th grade, the first episode I ever recorded off television was Time Chasers, which was pretty much on loop in my VCR.

    SAMSON VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN
    GODZILLA VS MEGALON
    PRINCE OF SPACE

    All three I can watch again and again and they never grow old;

SAMSON… is just hilarious riff wise and the movie is about as goofy as it gets. The skewed translation is so weird! ‘Come in, now Get Out!’. Plenty of action and the women are very easy on the eyes as well.

GODZILLA…the riffs are great, the dubbing is anoyingly funny (that kids voice???) rubber monsters, roaches, Jet Jaguar song, drop kicks, Eskimo Spy, lame science (JJ simply ‘programmed’ himself to grow into a giant????), kid is knocked unconcious three times (payback for that voice)with no injury???

PRINCE… the riffs are really sharp, GREAT villian who earned himself a later guest appearence (great Phantom of Krankor Bill), Space ships & tanks that DRILL under a planets surface to get around?????, chicken men, weapons that ‘have no effect’, lame giant and I can’t believe this movie did not get an ‘R’ rating due to the lack of underwear!? In summary I LIKE IT VERY MUCH!

Hi, I usually don’t/can’t join in on this, but the title made me think of one immediately, an early VHS (IIRC), Pod People (it stinks!). Trumpy, the grumpy old guy, the witless kids, the R Faire poachers.
However Fart Bargo also reminded me of a pair.. Prince of Space and Invasion of the Neptune Men, best watched (IMHO) as a Double Feature… preferably with some kind of drinking game involved.

The Final Sacrifice. I can never get tired of that one, and it puts a huge grin on my face every time I watch it.

I think I’ll go with “Prince of Space” and “Operation Double 007”. Both are tremendously goofy, but enjoyable.

Sampo, I’m so glad we share the fondness for GIRL’S TOWN as the antidote to a crappy day. I really do think the riffing in that episode is just about the best-ever, and it sets of the silliness of that movie so very nicely. I imagine part of it is that some of the stars are people I really love in other contexts (Ray Anthony! Mel Torme! Elinor Donihue! And the always underrated Gloria Talbott! Plus the Platters, for cryin’ out loud!) and it’s so surreal to see them slumming in this absurdly bogus redemption story. It never fails to lift my spirits.

I usually choose one of these:

    Girlstown
    Prince of Space
    Invasion of the Neptune Men

  13. adoptadog says:

    Creeping Terror
    Angels Revenge
    I Accuse My Parents
    Soultaker
    Gamera vs Guiron
    Catalina Caper
    Skydivers
    Pod People
    Incredible Melting Man
    Invasion of the Neptune Men

These eps in particular cheer me up, and I tend to choose from them when I’m especially down. And all of the above, plus the Rifftrax Shorts Vol I, got me through recovery from surgery…..thanks, guys!

  14. adoptadog says:

Oops, sorry, Sampo! I see now I should have picked just one…but MST eps are like Lays potato chips, you can’t choose just one!

  15. LDG says:

The Creeping Terror all the way.

It is just so goofy that I have to smile. If I’ve watched CT recently I might also go for Prince of Space, Giant Gila Monster or Hercules and the Captive Women. “Today is dedicated to, Uranus!”

  16. PrivateIron says:

Recently, CT’s Oozing Skull and the Riffters on House on Haunted Hill, just the opening song makes me smile

To be more cannonical, Final Sacrifice

A lot of opening scenes make me happy: Lemonkinda’s rafting; Touch of Satan’s car montage; the cat in Ring of Terror; the PBS opening of Overdrawn; the 80’s segment of Outlaw; the road trip in Girl with Gold Boots. To give endings their due: Smoke on the Weirdo.

And any time they sing “Deep, Deep Clown” on 1013

In such a situation, I’d go for something goofy. One of the Russian films (particularly Day the Earth Froze and Jack Frost) would be a good choice.

  18. Jane Dobson says:

On a bad day, I like to go with some shorts — “Mr. B.”, “A Case of Spring Fever,” “Design for Dreaming” and the Gumby short are some of my favorites.

As for movies, “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank” never fails to cheer me up!

Mole People jumps to mind, I also agree with Jack Frost and the shorts are a great pick-me-up

I suppose if I have just one, it’s CAVE DWELLERS. It reminds me that no-matter how bad my day was, at least I didn’t have to deal with a femmy, John-Saxon type who wants to steal my geometric nucleus…

And I’m not sure how to say this without being creepy, but I always get a kick out of trashy movies like WILD WILD WORLD OF BATWOMAN.

My all time favorite, especially when I’m really down is “Horror of Party Beach”. I had it on tape for years until it finally wore completely out …sigh… Now the “Dead talk back” or “Sky Drivers”…heck! Any of them can make me feel better. Sure wish they would put “Horror of party Beach” in a set. Do farts have lumps?”

Speaking of Girls Town: Mamie Van Doren has posted a new picture of herself at IMDb. Wow! She is in her 70s and she is still hot.

  23. Steve K says:

Erm – all of them? Putting in a MSTie when I get home IS what I do when I’ve had a crappy day — or a good day for that matter — or, come to think of it, a so-so day…

Okay, If I had to pick a top five, off the top of my head:

    Space Mutiny
    Pod People
    The Final Sacrifice
    Prince of Space
    Cave Dwellers

DVDs: all of the shorts discs would go in there right up at the top.

As for RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic, I don’t have enough RiffTrax to say (although House on Haunted Hill was GOOD) and CT would have an entry up there if they’d release “East Meets Watts” already!

Hard choice because a lot of them cheer me up. I think I’d have to choose Time Chasers. The host segments are almost as much fun as the movie.

    In no particular order:

Girl in Gold Boots–Crow’s table dance and Mike’s moving folk song always induce a smile.

The Final Sacrifice–Gordon Lightfoot at home and hockey-hair as an airborne virus are two of my faves.

Giant Spider Invasion–Whatever your trouble may be, it could only be worse in Wisconsin.

The Skydivers–Coffee with Joe and Beth, and TV’s Frank, “It made you mad, mean mad!”

It’s hard to choose just one, they are all my friends (that sounds so sad). Right now I seem to be watching Leech Woman a lot. It’s so ridiculous on so many levels, I just have to laugh.

  30. Kilroy says:

Prince Of Space – Pretty much THE episode of MST3K for me.

The Starfighters – An unexpected hit for me and now an all-out favorite.

Time Chasers – Starts with a goofy protagonist and goofy science and just takes off running. Yay for Bob Evil!

All three of those just make me feel so much better. Thanks to these movies I now have the non-sequitors “After that dog,” “Should have been none minutes,” and “You Castleton snob” to toss out and confuse my friends and family with.

Now I’m in the mood for a triple feature…

I ususally go for The Starfighters, Hercules Unchained, or Prince of Space. The other night actually my best friend and I were feeling quite bummed, so we watched the three Hercules movies and felt much, much better.

  32. The Professor says:

Prince of Space, by far. Actually, I put this on just a few weeks ago after a truly awful day when I learned the family restaurant would be closing. Somehow the sight of a grown man jumping around in tights in a field made me feel a lot better.

In reality, MST3K has got me through many really rough times in my life. It’s hard to describe the warm feeling that the show gives me but it’s enough to keep the blues at bay. These weekend discussion boards also help make my Saturday shift a little easier as well.

  33. MikeH says:

Danger!! Death Ray and The Starfighters. I don’t if cause they are films from the 60’s or it’s the repetitive music in both films, which usually has nothing to do with the scenes in the film. Especially when Bart Fargo is chasing a bad guy while playing the psuedo Watermelon Man song. With Starfighters, I just picture leaving the movie theater at films end in confusion wondering what was the point of the movie.

There are so many, it’s almost hard to choose, but the ones I usually turn to are:

    I Accuse My Parents
    Hobgoblins
    Boggy Creek II
Viking Women vs the Sea Serpent
    The Final Sacrifice
    Space Mutiny
    Hercules
    The Deadly Mantis
    Mole People

  44. Most 80s movies they did, with Pod People being my number one pick (did ya guess?). Just about any of the 90s movies too; Wirwulf, and of course, Merlin’s Shop, that definitely brought GOOD into the world.

Manos did not do this for me at first, but it’s grown on me so much that it actually does cheer me up quite a bit.

The Coleman Francis films are favorite of mine too for some reason, though I can’t make the claim that they cheer me up…at all.

    A great discussion topic!

    Episodes that cheer me up:

    DEADLY MANTIS
RING OF TERROR (Frank’s song is so worth the wait, but I admit that I like the movie, too)
    HUMAN DUPLICATORS
    BEGINNING OF THE END
    EARTH VS. THE SPIDER
    PRINCE OF SPACE
    CAVE DWELLERS

    There are many more.

My all-time favorite pick me up is Monster-a-go-go, but if I’m not in the mood for that one (which is rare when I want a pick-me-up)I usually go with the following (in no particular order):

The Skydivers, Ring of Terror, Prince of Space, The Starfighters, The Sinister Urge, Bride of the Monster, Space Mutiny, The Giant Spider Invasion, Girl in Gold Boots, Devil Fish, Cave Dwellers, Pod People, Zombie Nightmare, Earth vs the Spider, I Accuse My Parents, Hobgoblins, Leech Woman, Werewolf, Godzilla vs Megalon, Puma Man, Hercules vs The Moon Men, The Day the Earth Froze, Teenage Strangler, Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell, Horror of Party Beach.

Wow, quite a lot there now that I look at it!

    I’d have to say:
Final Sacrifice (best episode ever)..”Larry Czonka!”
Zombie Nightmare…..”Things have been great since dad died”
Time Chasers…”Let’s go director’s college buds, that brought their own suits to the shoot”

  50. Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

Creeping Terror comes to mind due to it’s goofy narration and monster.

The Dead Talk Back and Teenage Strangler both have a lovable community-theater ineptness about them.

Skydivers is probably tops for me, though. It’s an early John Waters prototype. It just keeps building in oddness until it finally explodes during the pre-Night Jump dance. I also listen to Jimmy Bryant when I need cheering up, too.
